THE RETURN OF CAMBRIAN PERIOD CHAPTER 187

187: Lost Territory of Qinghai

Cong Xia never expected that the culmination of the thoughts of three evolved individuals during their advancement of cerebral domains would be so astonishing. It practically overturned their initial conjectures about the apocalypse, rendering the mystery of the apocalypse even more elusive. In the face of the secrets held by this planet, they appeared minuscule and powerless. The only thing they could be certain of was that, whether it was the Cambrian consciousness or other forces, they were tirelessly weakening humanity, and they could not simply await their fate.

Zhuang Yao sighed, saying, "I hope our journey to Qinghai will provide us with more clues."

"It certainly will. The expedition to Qinghai carries a multitude of hopes, but my greatest hope for all of you is a safe return," Cong Zhenzhong surveyed the group, his expression grave.

Cong Xia playfully smiled, "No problem. By the way, Second Uncle, has the personnel list been finalized? Li Dao'ai told us he wants to go, but we can't leave Zhou Fenglan alone in Beijing."

"We've devised this plan: if Wu Yu goes, Li Dao'ai and Zhou Fenglan stay behind to keep each other in check. If Wu Yu doesn't go, Li Dao'ai goes to Qinghai, and Yao Qianjiang stays. Both Yao Qianjiang and Li Dao'ai have valid reasons to go, but we can't let Zhou Fenglan monopolize the capital city. This arrangement will have to do for now."

Cong Xia nodded, "Yes, it's best if Wu Yu agrees to accompany us to Qinghai. It increases our chances of survival."

Cheng Tianbi inquired, "Have there been any new developments from the Americans?"

Tang Tingzhi replied, "Changze has had contact with House, and they indeed know some things that we don't. They seem to have found a way to use Cambrian energy to assist in experiments with Dragonblood individuals. To uncover this information, we'll need to pay a price, and we're currently working on it."

"Has House made any requests regarding advancement?"

Tang Tingzhi shook his head, "No, he mutated seven months ago and shortly thereafter grasped the cultivation techniques that spread from China. I suspect he can advance smoothly without our assistance. Let us handle House and McRaven's affairs; all you need to do is perform your tasks well."

Zhuang Yao said, "Very well, that way I can worry less."

"McRaven is leaving the day after tomorrow. They've brought quite a few rare metals as a token of appreciation for helping McRaven advance. Whenever you have time, come over and choose what you need."

"Great, that's exactly what I need."

Cheng Tianbi asked, "Is there still no news from Jacqueline in Moscow?"

Cong Zhenzhong shook his head, "No, I'm afraid Jacqueline has indeed entered Qinghai."

Cheng Tianbi seemed somewhat disappointed.

Shen Changze said, "At least your fellow evolutionists of the same elemental affinity have shown up. Li Dao'ai and I haven't even heard anything about ours. Just think about it, and you'll feel better."

Cheng Tianbi neither confirmed nor denied, but his mind was filled with the awe-inspiring power of the water and metal elemental evolutionists working together. It wasn't just him; Shen Changze and Li Dao'ai also wished to meet their fellow evolutionists of the same affinity as soon as possible.

Shan Ming laughed, "Hey, I heard that the Russian is a woman, and she's quite beautiful. You're quite lucky, buddy."

Cheng Tianbi didn't bother explaining such matters. However, with Cong Xia nearby, he couldn't help but reply, "I only need her energy."

Shen Changze furrowed his brow and glanced at Shan Ming, "Son, what if the other fire elemental evolutionist is also a woman?"

Shan Ming didn't hesitate at all, "I wish you good luck then."

Shen Changze raised an eyebrow, "You really..."

Shan Ming patted his shoulder with a smile, "A man can't tie himself to one tree. I support you in trying different things."

Shen Changze shrugged off his hand and stood up abruptly. He stood up so forcefully that he even knocked over the chair. He glared at Shan Ming fiercely and then turned to leave.

Shan Ming looked bewildered. He asked Al, "What's gotten into him now?"

Al shrugged, "It's a bit complicated to explain. It's easier for you to go and appease him."

"Oh." Shan Ming seemed completely unconcerned. He glanced at the puzzled Cong Xia and the others, saying, "He's always been like this."

Cong Xia had heard some rumors about Shen Changze and Shan Ming before, not knowing if they were true. Now it seemed that they might be more than just rumors. It felt a bit strange to him, especially since Shen Changze referred to Shan Ming as "Dad." Even though they were only foster father and son, he didn't really have the standing to comment on others. His relationship with Cheng Tianbi was also "unconventional," wasn't it?

However, the rumors about Shan Ming's personality were undoubtedly true. After this extended period of interaction, Cong Xia found that Shan Ming's emotional intelligence was almost non-existent, and his demeanor was domineering and arrogant. This aligned quite well with his background as a mercenary for over twenty years. Outsiders knew that the one you shouldn't provoke among the Dragonblood Clan wasn't really Shen Changze – he mostly kept to himself. On the other hand, Shan Ming had a short fuse; once ignited, he would explode. And with Shen Changze's "filial" nature, if you upset Shan Ming, it was equivalent to provoking the entire Dragonblood Clan. The people of the Dragonblood Clan truly had unique personalities.

Cong Zhenzhong said, "By the way, today we received an airmail package."

"Air... ah?"

Cong Zhenzhong pushed his glasses up, "It was delivered by a carrier pigeon. I was just joking." He seemed a bit disappointed, "Was it that hard to understand?"

Cong Xia chuckled, "You delivered the joke with such a serious expression that I didn't catch on. What package is this, and where is it from?"

"From Xiaoxing'an Mountains. Commander Zhang sent it on behalf of Mu Fei." Cong Zhenzhong made an internal call, instructing someone to bring it over.

Before long, Xiao Wang arrived on an electric scooter. He unloaded a large box from the scooter, big enough to fit a person inside.

"Wow, what's this?"

"I don't know, it's for you to open."

"Me?" Cong Xia smiled, drew his personal combat knife, cut the ropes and cardboard, revealing a foam box inside. It seemed to contain something that required insulation, probably food.

Cong Xia opened the foam box, a burst of cold air emanated from it. The large box contained several kinds of vegetables and fruits, along with an envelope. Cong Xia opened the envelope, and a few photos of Mu Fei and Devil Pine fell out. The two "people" in the photos looked exactly the same, with handsome and fair faces, long black hair.

However, their expressions easily set them apart – Devil Pine looked impatient, while Mu Fei was smiling happily. There were a few more photos depicting the vegetable garden they had set up near Devil Pine's main body. It seemed that these vegetables and fruits were grown there. The final two photos were of their small black cat, which had grown quite a bit.

"There's a letter." Liu Fengyu picked it up from the ground and handed it to Cong Xia.

Cong Xia unfolded the letter, a smile forming at the corners of his mouth. "Mu Fei says they've found something to do now. They're living a pastoral life every day. San’Er often goes to visit them, bringing friends along to play mahjong, cook, and listen to music. He says they're just missing a house there and is looking forward to our good news."

Liu Fengyu smiled, "These two are really living carefree lives." He sounded quite envious.

Tang Yanqiu also sighed, "In this post-apocalyptic world, they're probably living the happiest lives." He glanced at Liu Fengyu and noticed that Liu Fengyu was looking at him too. He blushed, not sure what had come to mind.

Zhuang Yao said, "Happiness is built on a foundation of strong power. No one dares to provoke Devil Pine. Of course, they can live in peace."

Deng Xiao exclaimed, "So much delicious food! I'm so envious!"

Cheng Tianbi looked at Cong Xia and said, "We'll have a life like that too."

Cong Xia nodded with a smile, "Absolutely."

After McRaven's departure, they had completed the tasks they were busy with during this phase. All the important figures around them had successfully advanced, and they could finally focus on practicing and improving without any distractions.

Every day, Cheng Tianbi dedicated half of his time to practicing and the other half to training in controlling wind and developing new techniques. Most of his training took place outdoors because of the massive destruction he could cause; no room could contain him.

Cong Xia practiced for a fixed four hours each day. The remaining time was spent on researching energy armors and other significant weapons and equipment within the Ancient Jade. With Zhuang Yao's assistance, he continually manufactured tools that greatly boosted his combat power. The immense returns he gained after putting in effort made him forget about sleep and food. Two months later, after energy-based weaponry was developed by Zhuang Yao, Cong Xia shifted most of his focus to the revolutionary task of transforming it into an infinite energy weapon.

Zhuang Yao had the tightest schedule. He not only had to practice and create and continuously modify training plans for each person, but he also had to design various weapons. Additionally, he assisted Cong Xia in modifying and manifesting many tools. Since Cong Xia's knowledge was lacking, Zhuang Yao supported him with the necessary knowledge of graphics, structures, and mechanical principles required for modifying and manifesting tools.

Apart from that, he was involved in several research projects. The Academy of Sciences was frantically searching for cerebral domain evolvers across the nation, but even if they had more evolvers, they would face even more work.

Liu Fengyu's training was focused on three aspects: practicing, improving abilities, and weapon operations. With that ugly gun in hand, his combat effectiveness had significantly increased. It had become an indispensable weapon for him. He tirelessly researched new techniques, accelerated the secretion of his digestive fluids, and trained in shooting. Originally, he was the laziest among them all, but under Tang Yanqiu's urging, he didn't find things any easier than the others. Due to his ability generating a foul stench, his training, like Cheng Tianbi's, also shifted outdoors.

Tang Yanqiu was incredibly self-disciplined. He formulated a timetable for himself and adhered to it strictly. His time allocation was quite reasonable, though outsiders who saw his training plan would be astonished. In addition to practicing, he used various high-difficulty equipment every day to help challenge the limits of his arm strength. The potential of the sea dragon tendons was immense; he hadn't even unlocked a tenth of their true power. If he could pull a heavier bow, he could shoot even farther.

This temptation for an archer was like a piece of fatty meat falling in front of him, driving him to constantly strive for improvement. Aside from physical training, he also performed atavistic training tailored for him. Zhuang Yao had listed useful skills that avian creatures could potentially revert to and developed a specific training plan for him. Tang Yanqiu executed it wholeheartedly.

Simultaneously, he also dedicated a significant amount of effort to discussing bow and arrow designs with Zhuang Yao and the technicians. Tang Yanqiu was the most dependent on weapons among the six; fighters reliant on weapons were the easiest to improve. Therefore, Zhuang Yao enjoyed designing bows and arrows for Tang Yanqiu as the effects were the most pronounced. There were still many arrows capable of increasing destructive power waiting for them to uncover.

Though Deng Xiao complained and whined every day, he never neglected the plan Zhuang Yao had devised for him. Besides practicing, most of his improvement efforts were directed toward physical fitness and combat skills. After a few months of growth, he was no longer limited to using brute force alone. Due to his genetic advantage, he could now easily spar with the Dragonblood mercenaries in human form. His combat strength in his transformed state was even more astonishing. His atavistic training was also crucial. Zhuang Yao had similarly compiled a list for him, consisting of essential combat skills such as toxins, color-changing, and wound healing. Despite facing hardship, the results were evident.

From being strangers to becoming familiar, from ordinary people trapped in dire situations to reaching the highest level of mutants, the changes in each person were earth-shattering. Their transformations weren't limited to the enhancement of their abilities; their persistent beliefs and unyielding wills were honed most effectively through one perilous situation after another. Their trust in each other was also forged like a solid city wall amidst life and death. They spent each day in fatigue and sweat, all for the sake of letting themselves, their companions, and all the people they cherished live well!

***

Four months later.

"This weather can really freeze a person to death," Cong Xia exclaimed as he looked at the weather records on the screen.

Cheng Tianbi replied, "It's already minus twenty-six degrees Celsius. Beijing has never been this cold, and the northeast has plummeted to below minus forty degrees. Winter has only just begun."

Deng Xiao sighed, "If it keeps getting colder like this, a lot of people will freeze to death."

Zhuang Yao said, "The Antarctic ice sheet has expanded by over four hundred kilometers in just one year. The global climate is being affected. This winter will only get colder. Beijing could reach minus fifty degrees, making it the coldest winter in human history."

Liu Fengyu looked at Zhuang Yao and asked, "If it's this cold, would it be slightly safer for us to go to Qinghai? Many animals should be hibernating."

Zhuang Yao shook his head, "Animals can adapt better to harsh environments than humans. Moreover, many animals have changed their habits. Those that should hibernate aren't hibernating, and those that should be herbivores are eating meat. Although it might be better than spring or summer, don't expect too much. Our problem with staying warm is more serious than encountering mutated animals."

Cong Xia sighed, "In any case, preparing for the worst is probably the best approach."

Zhuang Yao glanced at him, "I can only agree with that."

"Has Wu Yu replied?"

"He has. He's not coming to Beijing. He'll meet us in Yunnan."

"This weather must be a piece of cake for him. He's practically made of ice; he's not afraid of the cold at all."

"Shen Changze isn't afraid either. It's truly enviable."

Cong Xia said, "So, the team is confirmed then. We, the dragonblood Clan, Jiujiang County, and the Frost Society. Four groups of natural power-evolved individuals mobilizing at once. It truly lives up to the SSS-level mission."

Deng Xia asked, "How many 'S' are there exactly?"

"There are too many 'S' to count."

The internal phone in the meeting room suddenly rang. Zhuang Yao answered it, "Hello, Professor Cong. Oh, okay, we'll be there shortly." Hanging up the phone, he said, "The professor wants us to come to his office."

Everyone got up and headed out.

Arriving at Cong Zhenzhong's office, Tang Tingzhi was also present. Both of them had serious expressions. Cong Xia asked, "Uncle, what's going on?"

"We've received information from Moscow. They know that you're about to head to Qinghai."

"So?"

Cong Zhenzhong took a deep breath, "They're earnestly requesting your help to rescue Jacqueline."

"What? Jacqueline is really in Qinghai then."

Zhuang Yao gave a sardonic smile, "Better late than never, right? They waited until we were about to leave to tell us. They're out of options, I guess?"

Tang Tingzhi slammed a piece of paper onto the table, "Likely so. According to their account, Jacqueline entered Qinghai two months ago and went missing. But the timeline is definitely earlier than they're admitting. They've probably been attempting to rescue her all along but without success, and now they can't keep it quiet anymore."

Cheng Tianbi said gravely, "Illegal entry or entering Qinghai despite the risk of us accusing them—why did they reveal this now? They must be desperate. Did you ask them why they sent Jacqueline to Qinghai? Didn't they know it's dangerous?"

Cong Zhenzhong nodded, "I asked. They said it was Jacqueline's own request because, according to her, she 'must go to Qinghai' and she 'heard the whispers of plants, the soft singing of the wind'."

Liu Fengyu frowned, "What the hell does that mean?"

"That's exactly what the Russians said. The translated content is identical. They were reluctant to send their only natural power-evolved individual to such a dangerous place, but Jacqueline insisted. I suspect she can gather a lot of information from plants. She must know something significant. So, when you go to Qinghai, you must find her. This woman knows a lot that we don't."

Cheng Tianbi murmured, "Of course, if she's still alive."

Cong Xia patted him on the shoulder, "Don't worry, her ability is quite unique. She won't die that easily."

Liu Fengyu shrugged, "With this, there will be five natural power-evolved individuals entering Qinghai. And there might be others in Qinghai. It would be really interesting if so many natural power-evolved individuals can't come out."

Zhuang Yao said, "Very likely. It's not easy anywhere. Be prepared."

Cong Zhenzhong stood up and looked at Cong Xia, "Are you all ready?"

Zhuang Yao said, "As of today, all weapons, armor, and tools have been modified. I'll present them this afternoon, but they'll only have a week to familiarize themselves with the weapons. However, they've all been modifications on their original weapons, so they're easy to handle. In a week, we'll officially depart."

"Good, if you have any requests, feel free to voice them. We'll do our best to fulfill them."

Cong Xia smiled, "Don't worry, we won't be shy about it. By the way, Colonel Tang, are you joining us this time?"

Tang Tingzhi replied, "Yes, I'm going. There will be more people going this time. Qinghai is vast, and we might need to split up. If there are any remnants of military forces in Qinghai, I'll be needed to coordinate."

"This is a major operation, at least forty to fifty people, right?"

"Currently, it's forty-eight individuals. The infinite energy weapons you've developed will be issued to them tomorrow." Cong Zhenzhong patted Cong Xia's shoulder, "Xia, you've worked hard during this period."

Cong Xia smiled, "Improving the team's combat capability has been beneficial for me as well."

Tang Tingzhi glanced at his watch, "When are you meeting the new weapons and armor this afternoon?"

"At three o'clock. Tell Shen Changze and the others to come as well. Their custom weapons are ready too."

"Alright."

Deng Xia stretched lazily, "Let's go eat then."

Cong Xia chuckled, "Mu Fei sent us over sixty kilograms of pine nuts a few days ago. Master Wu said he'll make pine nut pies for us today. Let's all go eat together."

Cong Zhenzhong chuckled, "You go ahead. A new batch of compressed energy has been produced and will be distributed throughout the city today. I need to go and sign off on it."

Cong Xia looked surprised, "So fast? How much can each person receive?"

Cong Zhenzhong sighed, "Ten grams per person, it can burn for two hours."

"Only two hours..."

"This is our current production limit. But most people aren't using it yet because it's not the coldest time. In the coming months, we'll strive to produce batches to save for later use. It barely prevents freezing to death."

Zhuang Yao remarked, "Cold weather isn't good for hunting, and besides not freezing to death, starving to death is also a real danger. Many people won't make it through this winter."

Cong Zhenzhong seemed to want to change the topic, he patted Cong Xia's shoulder, "You should go now. After you're done, I'll meet you at the cafeteria."

Knowing they couldn't be of much help, and not wanting to waste Cong Zhenzhong's time, everyone headed towards the cafeteria. Compared to the ordinary people struggling outside the Institute of Science, they had a warm environment and an abundance of food. It felt like living in paradise, yet they needed to challenge hell time and time again.

The institute's head chef had indeed baked a pine nut pie larger than a grinding stone. The pine nuts were about the size of a little finger joint, densely spread over the golden-brown pie. Taking a bite, it was crispy, sweet, fragrant, and delicious. Deng Xiao was close to tears from the sheer deliciousness.

Savoring the food, Liu Fengyu remarked, "Mu Fei is truly thoughtful. He always remembers us with good food."

Cong Xia sighed, "Yes, he's a really good person. If it weren't for him, the Devil Pine would have turned us all into hedgehogs."

Deng Xiao exclaimed with anticipation, "If we make it back alive from Qinghai, let's go visit him. He'll definitely treat us to a lot of delicious food."

Zhuang Yao rolled his eyes at him, "The Devil Pine said that Puppet Jade must be handed to us personally. So, Cong Xia definitely has to go to the Northeast again. But you don't need to go."

"Why?"

"Because there's no need."

Deng Xia hummed, then grabbed Zhuang Yao and held him above his head before sprinting away, shouting, "Whee—fly high—"

Zhuang Yao shouted angrily, "Idiot, put me down!"

After everyone finished eating, they chatted for a couple of hours, then arrived on time at the underground training grounds in Zone Six. The weapons and armor had already been transported there. They were about to meet their modified new weapons and armor.

The four members of the dragonblood Clan were already waiting there. This time, Zhuang Yao had personally customized weapons for them. Other accompanying personnel would receive the infinite energy weapons. Originally, Yao Qianjiang and Wu You were also supposed to have custom weapons, but they weren't as proficient with firearms as the dragonblood Clan members, nor could they experience the instant combat power increase like Liu Fengyu. After discussing it, they decided to make do with a few infinite energy handguns.

Crates of weapons and armor were lined up in rows, nearly occupying half of the spacious underground training ground, creating quite a spectacle.

Everyone was eagerly awaiting the sight of these impressive objects.

Zhuang Yao said, "Should we look at the weapons first, or the armor?"

Deng Xiao eagerly said, "Armor first. The armor should be the same for everyone. Let's save the thrilling moment for later."

Cong Xia chuckled, "That's a fair point, although there is one significant difference—attributes. The armor is customized based on each individual's energy attributes." His tone carried a hint of pride. He had worked tirelessly for nearly half a year on these armors. Finally, he managed to create these few pieces. They were the most intricate and complex things he had produced so far.

"Come on, let us see."

Zhuang Yao approached a table with a flat-coded box on it. The box was not large, about the size of a carry-on suitcase, but it had a 16-digit lock code.

Shen Changze furrowed his brow, "Armor... inside?"

Cong Xia grinned, "That's right, it's inside."

"Whose is it?"

"Everyone's. Six sets for us, four for you, and Yao Qianjiang and Wu Yu each have one."

"Everyone's?" The group looked at the small box with puzzled expressions.

Zhuang Yao opened the box.
