 5 Global Evolution

Cheng Tianbi whispered, "Slowly place your backpack on the ground."

Cong Xia swallowed nervously. He had noticed the monkey staring at him. It was probably a pet of the household. When the owners left, they locked it inside. Now that all the food had gone bad, it must be hungry.

Cong Xia kept his eyes fixed on the monkey's every move as he placed his backpack on the ground and unzipped it to show his goodwill. He was scared that the monkey would attack him. Even if he could keep up with the monkey's movements, his body wouldn't have time to react. He didn't want to die.

"Step back," Cheng Tianbi said again.

Cong Xia took a small step back, and the monkey suddenly widened its eyes and snarled fiercely at him.

"Don't move," Cheng Tianbi whispered. "Don't step back. He wants to eat you."

Cong Xia's legs went weak, and his voice trembled. "How do you know?" After asking the question, he realized it was a stupid one. The monkey was staring at him, not the big bag of food on the ground.

"The food may have gone bad. A monkey's sense of smell is over a thousand times stronger than that of a human. He can smell it, and he knows we are fresh."

Cheng Tianbi was right. When he opened the backpack earlier, he saw several vacuum-packed sausages had already started to bloat. The monkey chose Cong Xia, the weaker of the two, instead of Cheng Tianbi, who was bigger, stronger, and had a weapon. The monkey was damn smart!

"What do we do now?" Cong Xia trembled.

"In a moment, I'll tell you to run. Run to the kitchen and don't worry about anything. Just get in and block the door."

"What about you?"

"Forget about me."

Cong Xia took a deep breath and tried to control his trembling body.

Suddenly, Cheng Tianbi shouted, "Run!" and fired four shots at the sofa where the monkey was hiding.

Cong Xia turned and ran to the kitchen. The monkey roared angrily and ran towards the other end of the sofa, while Cheng Tianbi took the opportunity to rush to the bedroom. However, the monkey suddenly leaped off the sofa and attacked him, ignoring Cong Xia who was an easier target.

The air was filled with the pungent smell of blood. The monkey's long fur was stained with bright red blood, and the pain greatly stimulated it. It gave up on Cong Xia, who was easier to catch, and attacked Cheng Tianbi, who had injured it.

Cheng Tianbi was down to his last two bullets in his Chinese-made Type 54 pistol, having already fired five shots. Without hesitation, he aimed at the charging monkey's chest and squeezed off two rounds.

To Cheng Tianbi's surprise, the monkey only stumbled a couple of steps despite being hit at close range. It continued to charge with bloodshot eyes, as if driven mad. In under two seconds, it leaped at Cheng Tianbi and knocked him to the ground. The monkey's gaping maw was aimed at Cheng Tianbi's neck, ready to bite.

Thinking fast, Cheng Tianbi shoved his pistol into the monkey's mouth, where it became lodged between the upper and lower jaws. The monkey roared and swiped a paw at Cheng Tianbi’s face, leaving three bloody wounds on his arm as he blocked the attack.

Hearing the commotion outside, Cong Xia was trembling with fear. He drew his own gun, unable to watch Cheng Tianbi be killed by the monkey. He also knew that if Cheng Tianbi died, he wouldn't last long either.

Cong Xia burst through the door and shouted, hoping to distract the monkey. But the monkey was too focused on Cheng Tianbi and the pistol stuck in its mouth, and it ignored Cong Xia.

Cheng Tianbi was bleeding heavily and in pain from the monkey's scratches. He shouted at Cong Xia, "Fire!"

Trembling, Cong Xia aimed his gun but froze. This was his first time using a gun, and he had forgotten to release the safety catch. Cheng Tianbi knew he couldn't rely on Cong Xia in this situation.

With the pain from his wounds clouding his thoughts, Cheng Tianbi saw the monkey's paw swinging towards his head. He heard the wind rushing past, almost as if he could see it, and he knew he had to act fast. With a burst of strength, he pushed the monkey off him and grabbed its arm, forcing it down. Then he swung his fist with all his might at the monkey's temple.

As he threw the punch, Cheng Tianbi felt a strange sensation, almost as if the wind was following his intention and reducing resistance on his fist. He hit the monkey's temple with a loud thud, sending it reeling. Cheng Tianbi grabbed its hair and punched it several more times, turning its eyes red. Eventually, the monkey collapsed weakly to the ground.

Cong Xia was shocked by what he saw. He was amazed by Cheng Tianbi's ferocity and bewildered by the apparent speed and strength of his punch. The wind seemed to arrive before Cheng Tianbi's fist, blowing the monkey's fur. Cong Xia wondered if he had seen it wrong. He couldn't believe that a human could possess such speed and strength.

In his mind, he saw the woman who had shoved the boss at the food stall.

Cheng Tianbi was panting heavily, one hand tightly grasping a handful of monkey hair, the other hand clenched into a fist. Blood from his wounds dripped onto the ground, creating a gruesome sight.

Cong Xia whispered, "Is it...dead?"

Cheng Tianbi turned his head, his face covered in sweat and blood, looking fierce and dangerous. It was the first time Cong Xia had seen his face, and instead of admiring his looks, he felt scared. Cheng Tianbi said, "No, give me the gun."

Cong Xia took two steps back, afraid to get too close to the monkey. He tossed the gun to Cheng Tianbi, who caught it with one hand, released the safety catch, and fired three shots into the monkey's brain. The action was swift and seamless. The monkey's exploding brain matter splattered onto Cheng Tianbi's body and face, but he showed no emotion, sending shivers down Cong Xia's spine.

Instinctively, Cong Xia turned his head away, feeling uneasy at the bloody scene.

Cheng Tianbi sat on the ground with the gun in hand, silently staring at his own hands.

Cong Xia walked over to help him up, "Your arms and waist are scratched, let me help you clean your wounds."

Cheng Tianbi declined his help and stood up on his own, sitting down on the sofa. "I have medicine in my bag."

Cong Xia searched through Cheng Tianbi's military travel bag and found a small package of basic first aid supplies. Cheng Tianbi's wounds had some skin and flesh exposed, with the monkey's coarse hair sticking to them. Cong Xia took a deep breath and used alcohol to clean Cheng Tianbi's wounds, his hands still trembling.

He had never considered himself a cowardly person before, but he also didn't think of himself as particularly brave. He was just an ordinary person, like the millions of other ordinary men in this world. In a normal and orderly civilized society, what were the chances of an ordinary person encountering life-threatening danger? If not for this scene today, he would never have known how cowardly he was when faced with a threat to his life.

If Cheng Tianbi hadn't been there today, he would have become the monkey's food. Just thinking about it made Cong Xia shiver with fear.

Cong Xia couldn't help but look up at Cheng Tianbi with admiration, but Cheng Tianbi was also looking at him. Their eyes met briefly, one cold and indifferent, the other ashamed.

Cong Xia lowered his head and said with self-deprecation, "Thanks to you, otherwise, I wouldn't have made it out today. Thank you."

Cheng Tianbi urged him impatiently, "Hurry up."

Cong Xia didn't dare to be careless and carefully cleaned Cheng Tianbi's wounds. If the bacteria in the food could mutate, there was no reason to think that the bacteria on their wounds couldn't evolve. He couldn't help but worry about the consequences of Cheng Tianbi's injuries at this time.

Cheng Tianbi was lost in thought, his mind not on his wounds. After Cong Xia finished bandaging him, he noticed Cheng Tianbi's actions and gently grabbed his hand, inspecting it closely. "Your fist..."

Cheng Tianbi looked at him. "What about it?"

"When you punched that monkey just now, your speed was incredible. I couldn't even keep up with it. How long have you been in the army? Have you trained to be that powerful?"

"When I threw that punch just now, what did you see? Describe it from start to finish."

Cong Xia thought for a moment. "I saw your fist hit the monkey's temple at lightning speed. It was like your fist was...carrying the wind. Yes, that's the feeling. The monkey's thick fur was even blown back by the wind."

Cheng Tianbi narrowed his eyes. "Just as I suspected..."

"What do you mean?"

Cheng Tianbi pondered for a moment before speaking. "I also felt the 'wind'."

"Felt the 'wind'? What does that mean?"

Cheng Tianbi looked past Cong Xia.

Cong Xia turned his head and saw a half-burnt, short and fat decorative candle on the coffee table, about as thick as an adult man's wrist and solid.

Cheng Tianbi suddenly waved his hand, and Cong Xia felt a gust of wind blow past his face. Not only did his hair flutter, but his head tilted to the side by a few inches. Then, he saw the candle blown off the table and onto the ground.

Both of them fell silent.

This scene was similar to telekinesis, something that usually appeared in magic shows and demonstrations of supernatural abilities. However, Cong Xia knew that Cheng Tianbi was not playing tricks, and a candle over a meter away from him could not have fallen to the ground just because he waved his hand.

The gust of wind just now was created by Cheng Tianbi.

Cong Xia's breathing was trembling. "Is this...evolution?"

Animals, plants, and microorganisms all evolved, and it was not uncommon for humans to undergo mutations. For example, the woman with immense strength, and now Cheng Tianbi with his astonishing abilities. Cong Xia could not think of any other explanation other than evolution.

Cheng Tianbi looked at his hand again and muttered to himself, "Evolution..."
