76 Cambrian Consciousness

Part 2

"Finding that highway is enough for us. Our original route also passed through Hanzhong."

As they entered the tourist park, several dilapidated offices were adorned with hanging clothes outside, indicating that this was where they lived. Some people looked at Abu and Road Bully with curiosity and fear. As they approached, these people quickly stepped back.

It seemed that they were living in even worse conditions than the people in the industrial park. They appeared emaciated and pale, and their numbers were at least half of those in the industrial park.

Zhuang Yao asked, "How many people do you have here?"

"There are still more than sixty now." Ming Lan gently touched the head of a little boy, her eyes filled with sadness. "The earthquake happened in the middle of the night. At that time, there were over a hundred staff members living here, and there were also sixty to seventy tourists staying in the hotel in the tourist area. The next day, the transportation system collapsed, and everyone was trapped here. Several days later, some people tried to leave on their own, but... we found their bodies not far from here. Now, only these people remain, and we can barely sustain ourselves. If we had more people, we would truly lack enough food."

"How many mutants are there here?" Cong Xia asked. He could sense the energy from Ming Lan, but among the ten or so people who intercepted them, only two were mutants.

Ming Lan was puzzled, "Mutants? Are you referring to people who suddenly become very strong? There's only me and another retired soldier. If there were more of us, the chances of successful hunting would be higher."

No wonder their situation was so dire. Among the group of over sixty people, there were only two mutants, who were widely recognized as the most common and numerous type of mutants with strength abilities. If it weren't for these monkeys guarding them, they would have been eaten up by various mutant creatures that launched surprise attacks.

Ming Lan understood this as well, "We can have food to eat because of these monkeys. By the way, do you need gasoline?"

Zhuang Yao's eyes brightened, "You have gasoline?"

Ming Lan shrewdly glanced at him and nodded, "You have a car, so you definitely need gasoline. We have some, although not much, and we don't have any use for it."

"How much do you have?"

"There are some abandoned cars here, and we collected gasoline from them previously for lighting purposes. We have around thirty to forty liters left. If you want it, you can exchange it for food."

Cong Xia said, "The things in our car are packaged and stored, so we can't give them to you. But we can hunt some large animals for you."

Ming Lan rolled her eyes and said, "Alright, one liter of gasoline in exchange for ten kilograms of meat."

Cong Xia was surprised, "You won't be able to finish that much meat."

"We have an underground cellar that is completely natural. It used to be used for storing liquor, and it can easily hold three to four hundred kilograms of meat. Moreover, we can cure the meat into jerky for better preservation. You don't have to worry about how we will store it. If you want gasoline, bring us four hundred kilograms of meat first."

Hunting some large animals was not a difficult task for them, but finding gasoline on the way was an unexpected surprise. Although the amount of fuel was not much, it was crucial for them.

Ming Lan led them to a resort. "The place you saw earlier was where the people taking turns guarding the tourist area live. The rest of the people live in the hotel, and important things are also stored there. I'll take you there to find maps or other information."

The group followed Ming Lan into the lobby of the resort, where some people were still sitting. The once expensive leather sofas were covered in green moss, and the formerly stylish decor was now dilapidated.

Ming Lan introduced them, and a small, elderly man approached and said, "I've been living here for over thirty years. I'm familiar with this place. If you want to go to the highway, no problem, I can find it."

"How far is it from here? Can you take us there?" Zhuang Yao asked.

The old man shook his head repeatedly. "No, I can't go. It's about twenty kilometers away. I can draw a route for you. It shouldn't be hard to find."

Cheng Tianbi knocked on the map and said, "If you take us there, we can give you two more guns and some ammunition."

From the expressions of the people, they were all tempted, but no one spoke. Finally, it was the old man who said, "It's not that we don't want to go, it's that we dare not. There are black bears, wild boars, and monkeys in the forest. They are all life-threatening."

Ming Lan clenched her teeth. "I'll take you there."

"Ming Lan! I disagree!" her husband exclaimed loudly.

Ming Lan replied, "Our few hunting rifles are running out of bullets. Depending on traps for hunting, we might not be able to catch anything for ten days or half a month. Are we going to starve to death? We still have the monkeys, but we can only find some food. Anyway, I can't let you take such risks."

"I'll go with the monkeys. They can protect me. It's only twenty kilometers, and I will definitely come back."

The couple began to argue, and the others in the tourist park shook their heads and sighed, not knowing how to persuade them.

Cong Xia hurriedly said, "Let's find it ourselves. When we go, we can ensure your safety. But when you come back, you'll be alone. It's too dangerous to consider. Let's forget about it."

Ming Lan stubbornly said, "No, I'll take you there!"

In the end, her husband angrily left, and Ming Lan lowered her head, letting out a heavy sigh.

Tang Yanqiu said, "We have some animal repellent powder. When you come back, you can sprinkle it on yourself. Most animals won't approach you. Plus, with these monkeys protecting you, it should be fine."

Zhuang Yao, still studying the map, said, "And if all else fails, you're a power-type evolved human. Concentrate your strength in your leg muscles, and you can run really fast."

Ming Lan nodded. "I know my limits. But please give me more guns and ammunition."

Cong Xia couldn't refuse this strong and kind woman. Besides, they had plenty of weapons and bullets, so he agreed.

After finalizing their plans, they decided to rest for a day here and hunt some animals to exchange for gasoline.

The hunting task was assigned to Abu, Tang Yanqiu, and Cong Xia.

In order to be able to drag back the large mutant animals, the people from the tourist area made a large sledge, and a few of them went along as well.

Abu was responsible for finding the prey, Tang Yanqiu for attacking, and Cong Xia for absorbing energy. They worked together and cooperated well. In just one afternoon, they hunted a wild boar weighing over 200 kilograms and three large jungle fowls, totaling more than 400 kilograms.

When they dragged these prey back, everyone was ecstatic.

All the over 60 people in the tourist area sprang into action. Some were cutting the meat, some were curing it, and some were packaging and refrigerating it.

Ming Lan took them to get the gasoline. When they arrived at the garage, they saw that three of the four or five plastic drums were only half empty. They definitely didn't look like they contained 40 liters of fuel.

Cong Xia said, "This... at most, it's 20 liters."

Ming Lan smiled and said, "I forgot. It's probably around that amount. I gave it all to you."

Cong Xia shook his head helplessly, consolidated the fuel into two drums, and then carried them outside to fill up the Road Bully.

Liu Fengyu leaned against the car and complained, "This woman is really shrewd."

Cong Xia chuckled and said, "She's been through a lot."

"But it's nice that we can sleep indoors tonight." Liu Fengyu stretched and yawned.

Ming Lan approached them and called them for dinner, serving them a large bowl of meat with enthusiasm. After dinner, they were provided with clean rooms.

Cheng Tianbi and Cong Xia naturally shared a room again.

Since the embarrassing incident of being drunk, Cheng Tianbi and Cong Xia hardly spent any time alone together. Now, looking at the bed in the hotel suite, Cong Xia felt a bit awkward.

Cheng Tianbi behaved as usual, undressed and went to bed. Cong Xia fidgeted and hesitated, moving things around and lingering by the bed for a long time, but hesitated to get on the bed to sleep.

Finally, Cheng Tianbi grew impatient and ordered, "Hurry up and get in bed."

Cong Xia climbed onto the bed with some hesitation, glancing at Cheng Tianbi and saying, "You're not asleep yet."

"I can't sleep with all the noise you're making."

"Noise... am I being noisy? I'm just tidying up." Cong Xia lay on the side, covered himself slightly with the blanket, and kept a distance from Cheng Tianbi.

Seeing through Cong Xia's awkwardness at a glance, Cheng Tianbi lifted the blanket and covered him, saying, "Go to sleep."

Cong Xia took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and felt Cheng Tianbi's presence all around him. Being able to lie in the same bed was truly wonderful.

"Cong Xia," Cheng Tianbi's low and hoarse voice sounded in his ear.

Cong Xia was startled, opened his eyes wide, and turned to look at him. "What's wrong?"

"After we arrive in Beijing... if we both survive, like you said, let's find a place to grow vegetables and hunt."

Cong Xia's eyes instantly lit up, nodding vigorously. "Okay, okay."

"I need to complete my mission first, and then we won't have to run around anymore. We can be self-sufficient, enough to sustain ourselves."

Cong Xia's voice trembled with excitement. "Tianbi, I no longer have parents. I... I can go anywhere with you. No, I mean, I want to accompany you in the future. You can hunt, and I'll cook delicious food for you. I think we can have a good life together."

Cheng Tianbi nodded lightly, his gaze calm and tranquil as water, as he looked at Cong Xia. Cong Xia also looked straight at him, revealing a shallow smile. His soft hair cascaded over his face, and his bright and gentle eyes looked especially beautiful in the dim moonlight.

Cheng Tianbi felt his heart pound, uncontrollably, with an overwhelming surge of emotions that he forcibly suppressed.

In that moment, Cong Xia's inner emotions surged as well, but having learned from past mistakes, he didn't dare to make any inappropriate moves, especially now that he was sober and didn't have the courage.

Cheng Tianbi clenched his fist and said in a hoarse voice, "Go to sleep."

Cong Xia tentatively moved closer to Cheng Tianbi and lay down beside him, closing his eyes contentedly. Cheng Tianbi looked at his tightly closed eyes, and his gaze darkened.

Early the next morning, they set off with Ming Lan. Ming Lan's husband had entrusted her with the four monkeys and instructed her to go and return quickly.

The monkeys and Abu didn't get along. Abu would make a fuss whenever he saw them, and the monkeys would bare their teeth and hiss. In order to keep them separate, they used road bully to divide Abu and the monkeys, each walking on one side, finally calming them down.

Ming Lan sat in the car and pointed at the map for them. "I'll take you to the Chengdu-Chongqing Expressway, and you should head north on the highway for over a hundred kilometers. You should be able to reach Chengdu today." Ming Lan sighed, "We've always wanted to go to Chengdu, but we dare not. This journey is too dangerous. I hope you can arrive there safely."

Zhuang Yao nodded. "It's a different route than what we planned, but it's good to visit Chengdu. Maybe we'll find something worthwhile."

They spent three hours walking and driving a distance of over twenty kilometers before finally reaching the highway. Although the entire highway was completely covered by the forest, the roadbed and crushed stones left beneath their feet were still visible, indicating that this used to be a road. In this post-apocalyptic era where the entire communication system had collapsed, this was one of the major ways they could determine their direction.

Tang Yanqiu took out a packet of powder from the car and sprinkled it on Ming Lan. Several monkeys and Abu retreated in disgust.

Ming Lan stared at the powder with longing in her eyes.

After Tang Yanqiu finished sprinkling the powder, he gave her the remaining half packet. "Take it, it should be useful in critical moments."

Ming Lan quickly took it and sincerely said, "Thank you for your help. Since the earthquake, we haven't seen any outsiders for such a long time. We don't even know what year or month it is anymore. It's fortunate to encounter kind-hearted people like you. If, if it's possible, when you arrive in Chengdu..." Ming Lan took out a piece of paper and stuffed it into Tang Yanqiu's hand. "These are the names, ID numbers, and home addresses of the 67 of us. Each of us has relatives in Chengdu, and their names, addresses, and contact information are also written. If possible, please find someone to rescue us. We don't want to be trapped there forever..." As she spoke, tears welled up in the eyes of this strong and resolute woman.

Tang Yanqiu was moved and took the paper. "I promise you that when I arrive in Chengdu, I will hand over this paper to the government or the military. I can only do so much for you, but I will keep my promise."

"Thank you." Ming Lan wiped away her tears.

She walked back with the four monkeys. Cong Xia kept turning his head back until her figure disappeared.

Cheng Tianbi glanced at him and asked, "What's wrong?"

Cong Xia sighed, "A young couple having to support the livelihood of sixty-seven people, it's really not easy."

Zhuang Yao said expressionlessly, "There are plenty of unfortunate people out there. Haven't we encountered enough on this journey?"

Cong Xia lowered his head, his voice heavy as he said, "The Cambrian consciousness allowed humans to evolve. Doesn't it indicate a desire to prevent the extinction of humanity? I hope that one day..."

One day, they could rebuild their homes, lovers could be reunited, children could grow up safely, and everyone could have enough food and clothing. Even if humanity had lost the civilization it had built over thousands of years, as long as they could survive, the future held infinite possibilities.

No one spoke, and no one answered Cong Xia's question. At this moment, everyone's mood was somewhat heavy. They moved with tired yet resolute steps towards the next destination.

Author's Note: It seems like Cheng Tianbi is about to burst... Um... There will definitely be progress this month, really! Trust me! The first intimate encounter between them will be fiery and explosive, that's my solemn promise to all of you (beating).
