Chapter 16.1 - Jing Sui

Ji Ling successfully lived through a few daunting days at Carlos’ residence. Every day, he racked his brain for ideas on performing outrageous atrocities and raising grand uproars. Besides murder, which he would never commit, he’d gone and done just about every other bad thing.

He’d made rose tea from the roses in Carlos’ garden that were carefully cultivated from precious seeds preserved from ancient times on earth, accidentally broken several precious kyanite sculpted statues in the hall from the Sarthou Galaxy, and accidentally burned a whole area of the garden during a barbecue. Every day, he’d sit on Carlos' chair in Carlos' study when he was bored and read his ancient books while ordering his servants to help him get food from other distant galaxies from time to time.

But!

Carlos didn’t mind at all!

From beginning to end, he’d never even shown a hint of displeasure. He even said that he’d have the botanists specializing in ancient plants from the Imperial Academy of Science cultivate more ancient roses so his little dear could make tea. As for the broken statues from Sarthou Galaxy, they weren’t even worth mentioning. He was just afraid that his little cutie had hurt his hand.

What could Ji Ling do? All his hopes were dashed!

Plus, these days he’d stayed at Carlos’ place, he’d thoroughly searched every nook and cranny only to find nothing. As for Carlos himself, he was even more difficult to find anything off of. Besides spoiling him to no end, Ji Ling couldn’t see anything else of note…

Ji Ling grabbed the last rose and began tearing petals off one by one...

He was reborn.

He was reborn not.

He was reborn.

He was reborn not.

He was reborn.

The system recalled what it had seen these days and couldn’t hold back, saying: [I’ve been playing games with my friends lately, but due to bad luck, I’ve been losing every time. However, losing a game once or twice doesn’t matter, as long as I win the war in the end.】

Ji Ling endured, and muttered under his breath: [What do you really want to say? 】

The system saw Ji Ling was finally willing to talk to him again, and hurriedly added: [I wanted to tell you that failure is the mother of success. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.】

Ji Ling: […]

Trying the first and second times is already this hard! You’re even telling me to try three or four times? Why don't you just tell me to keep trying infinite times then? You have such a great way of comforting people.

Ji Ling choked back his anger: [So, a lot of time has passed since then. Have you clearly established whether they’re reborn or not? 】

System: [Not yet ...]

Ji Ling interrupted him with a smile and said: [Then why don't you go die (explode) on the spot? 】

The system was silent for a moment and stifled: [A person with class shouldn’t make personal attacks so casually. 】

Ji Ling: [I didn’t make a personal attack on you casually. I've endured you for a long time. It's not ‘casual’ at all. Really :) ]

System: […] He must’ve had water in his brain for him to be so stupid as to comfort his host!

If you won’t repay kindness with kindness, then so be it! Cold war it is!

The result was fated to be poor with them just hurting each other.

Ji Ling finished venting at the system and tore off the last petal in his hand. Crap… He’d been so busy talking to the system just now, that he’d lost count of which one he was on!

He threw the naked flower on the ground with a dark face, and then even stepped on it along the way.

He walked out the door.

When the servant waiting outside saw Ji Ling come out, he immediately said respectfully, “Young Master Ji Ling, can I help you with anything?”

This servant was the one who was nearly killed because he’d blocked Ji Ling’s entry into the study. He carefully observed the face of the handsome young man in front of him. He was sincerely respectful towards him now. People on the outside said that Ji Ling was an unscrupulous rich kid, and well, the youth did look and act the part. However, he had an inexplicably good impression of this youth now.

He’d never imagined that one day...

there’d actually be someone who would face the murderous and terrifying Archduke Carlos fearlessly like that and protect his humble life.

Rather than saying the youth was a rich kid, it was more fitting to say he was a willful, but kind and brave boy.

Plus, with a noble background like his, what was wrong with being willful and arrogant?

Ji Ling didn't know of the complicated thoughts going through the servant’s head. He didn't particularly like being waited on, so he said listlessly: "No, there’s no need.”

Then, he walked alone in the direction of the garden.

In fact, he was just thinking about how he should bid Carlos good-bye. He’d only come here this time to test Carlos’ tolerance, but besides the spoiling, he’d gotten no other returns.

Ji Ling gradually understood.

It didn’t matter whether Carlos was reborn or not, because one thing would never change. The most important thing to Carlos was his power struggle with Emperor Sui. It was his obsession over both lives. Ji Ling was just a minor variable completely irrelevant to the overall situation.

If by chance Carlos really was reborn, and had decided to help him out a little out of last life’s guilt, it still wasn’t a big deal. It was nothing more than practically settling debts one by one.

When the main plot starts, he likely won’t have time to care about me anymore.

The most important thing for Ji Ling was getting Jing Sui and Ning Yu together.

So... he had to go to the palace banquet tomorrow night.

Emperor Sui would be holding a banquet at the palace tomorrow evening. In addition to many high-ranking imperial nobles, Ning Yu, the national idol and star of tomorrow who had fought impressively in the Nadeau Galaxy, would also be invited to attend.

Inviting a military officer with a civilian background to attend the royal banquet undoubtedly reflected His Majesty's respect for civilians and their equal treatment.

According to his experience last life and the plot of the original book, Ning Yu should have already met Jing Sui at Brandon's house by now. Whether it was to win over civilian hearts or out of love, Jing Sui would treat Ning Yu kindly at the banquet. When Ji Ling attended the banquet last life, and saw Jing Sui and Ning Yu chatting happily together,  he got ‘extremely jealous.’ Ji Ling had gone to slap Ning Yu’s face, but was instead slapped mercilessly by his most beloved. In the end, he resented Ning Yu from top to bottom, and this paved the way for his next attack. At the same time, he also gave Jing Sui the opportunity to protect Ning Yu and improve their feelings.

As an ordinary person with a civilian background, Ning Yu was able to make many imperial nobles value him and try to win him over. He was also able to make Emperor Sui personally court him.  He instilled fear in many people, preventing them from acting rashly against him. Morever, he was hugely popular with the ordinary people and closely linked to their hopes and dreams.

So this was the power of an idol…

As a result, his every action could influence the political situation and public opinion. No matter who it was, if he wanted to do anything against Ning Yu, he had to think twice before acting. The consequences of touching a famous and popular idol versus a nameless passer-by were completely different.

Although Ning Yu's status pushed him to the forefront, being an important pawn in the game was also the greatest form of protection for him.

Only this idiotic original host whose brain was rotten with love would go and rashly make trouble for Ning Yu at the slightest thing. It was inevitable that he met a miserable end. No matter which way you looked at it, that was the fate of a cannon fodder character. Of course, Ji Ling had replaced the original now, and the annoying task of making trouble naturally fell on him.

Ji Ling thought of this, and kicked the stone at his feet. He gave a faint sigh. Carlos would return soon, and he’d tell him he was leaving. Since I haven’t figured out his goal, it’d be better to stay further away after this.

Ji Ling wouldn’t give up because of one little incident!
