Chapter 42.1 - Testing the Waters

Ji Ling almost cried as he was locked in the small dark room. Why did he have to be so unlucky? This was right at a time when the system was away too. It was completely black in front of his eyes, and there wasn’t a single person he could turn to for help.

To make matters worse, he’d also dragged Ning Yu into it this time. Remembering that the man had gotten hurt while he was helping him just now made him feel even more anxious. And who knew where Ning Yu was being held, or how he was doing now…

But no matter how worried he was, there was nothing he could do. He’d never hated how weak and powerless he was this much. Inside this interstellar world full of monsters, he was just a piece of trash.

Ji Ling sat there dumbly.

After a while, he realized that he couldn't let it go on like this. He fumbled blindly to the door and banged on the metal like his life depended on it: "Hey! Is anyone there? Let me out!"

However, even after shouting half the day until his throat hurt, the only thing that echoed back in the room was his own voice. Unwilling to accept it, he glued his ear to the door, but still couldn’t hear a single sound.

All that greeted him was an unsettling silence.

Ji Ling fiercely slammed on the door in rage. His hand had turned red, and his eyes fret with helplessness. Just when he was about to give up... A click suddenly sounded, and the metal door flew open.

Ji Ling jumped so hard that he staggered backwards. Raising his head, he couldn’t help but be shocked as he looked up at the tall man in front of him wearing a silver mask. Fear and vigilance then crept into his eyes.

This scene was really similar to what had happened last time...

Back then, he had been rescued by Jing Sui after much difficulty, and vowed to never leave Empire Star again. He really didn't want to fall into the hands of this terrifying and unpredictable rebel leader ever again. Even if the man had saved him once last time, Ji Ling wasn’t the adventurous type to take risks. There was no way he could completely trust an enemy whose real face he didn’t even know.

Just because this man hadn’t killed him that time, didn’t mean he was safe and harmless.

Although Ji Ling was very scared inside, he thought about Ning Yu who could be dead or alive for all he knew, and plucked up the courage to look at the man, asking: "You…! Where did you take Ning Yu?"

After he said this, he paused and thought. Although Ning Yu was really famous, what if Gabriel didn’t know him? So he added: “The guy who was with me!"

He finished speaking, and saw the man in the silver mask take a step forward. Immediately, he tensed up and took a step back, desperately gnashing his teeth and looking at the man tenaciously.

Gabriel glanced down at the youth who was obviously scared, but still stubbornly looked him in the eye. A strange light seemed to flicker within his pitch black eyes. After some time, he let out a husky and ear-grating voice and said with a teasing undertone: “Not worried about your own situation anymore? You’re still in the mood to care about how other people are faring?”

Ji Ling was shocked. Oh right, although he really was afraid of this guy, he somehow felt instinctively that Gabriel wouldn’t hurt him… He didn't know why he’d have such crazy and contradictory preconceptions himself, but it might’ve been because Gabriel never really did anything to him, whether it be this life or last life.

That’s why after he was abducted, he subconsciously neglected his own welfare in this situation, and was instead, more worried about the injured Ning Yu...

However, he didn’t have the time to care about tiny details like this now. Gabriel wasn’t one of the targets for his mission. Moreover, he wasn’t even particularly close with Jing Sui and the guys, let alone someone like Gabriel. This guy was just another character that came with the original novel… At critical moments like this, who cared about the details with these extra characters! Of course, a life was more important!

Ji Ling bit his lip and said: "I know your purpose is me. He’s just an innocent civilian. Don't hurt him."

The youth’s lake blue eyes were clear and bright, but his beautiful and delicate visage had paled slightly out of fear. Even though he was terrified, the boy still requested he not harm innocent people…

Gabriel suddenly let out a low laugh. Raising his hand, he pinched the youth’s chin. His sharp gaze fell on Ji Ling’s face, and his husky voice was filled with cruel mockery:  “He may be a civilian, but he was willing to be a dog for an aristocrat like you… That kind of traitor deserves nothing more than death.”

Ji Ling was initially shocked dumb. Then he felt a chill go through his body. He couldn't believe the man in front of him would say something like this…

This… This guy wants to kill him?

No way!

He’d originally thought Gabriel wouldn't do anything to Ning Yu. He was a hero of civilian origins, after all. Shouldn’t Ning Yu be their bragging rights? Gabriel had only killed nobles and never hurt civilians all this time, and that was the only reason why Ji Ling dared to beg mercy for him. He’d thought for sure that Gabriel would agree to let Ning Yu go…

As a result, this terrible man opened his mouth and immediately spoke of taking the guy’s life.

This answer was completely outside his expectations!

So the protagonist shou was going to just die inexplicably? Bah, even if Ning Yu wasn’t the protagonist shou, he couldn’t just stand by and let him get killed off!

Plus, if Ning Yu hadn’t come to help him, Gabriel wouldn't  have misunderstood...

Ji Ling's chin was pinched by the man, and ice cold metallic gloves brushed his skin. The chill felt like tiny thorns piercing him, which made him tremble from the cold sensation. Gritting his teeth, he said nervously: "You… Don't kill him! Things aren’t like what you said. He has never clung onto powerful nobles, and even more so, he’s not my dog. You’ve completely misunderstood!"

Gabriel looked at the boy's anxious and paled visage. Leisurely, he said in a grating low laugh: "Oh? If that’s the case, then why did he come out to help you just now? "

Ji Ling replied without hesitation: "He saved me because he’s a good person! He’s a soldier with a sense of duty and responsibility. Even rich kids like me who he looks down on, he’s still willing to save... " Ji Ling’s eyelashes trembled as he pleaded in a whisper: “He’s really not with me. Don't hurt him.”

Gabriel looked steadily into the youth’s eyes, as if to confirm whether what he said was true or false.

His blue eyes were so clear and bright, and he answered so quickly without hesitation… It was as if this was really the boy’s true thoughts.

Gabriel's gaze made Ji Ling’s hair stand on end all over. He couldn’t shake the feeling that something felt off. The man’s eyes seemed to want to see through his everything. It was as if he wanted to peel off his skin and tear apart his bones. Ji Ling wanted nothing more than to escape this very second. However, for Ning Yu’s sake, he didn't dare move an inch. All he could do was desperately express his sincerity through his eyes!

Ning Yu really isn’t a traitor!!!

After some time, he saw Gabriel tilt his head down slightly. The man’s face approached, and those cold fingers gently brushed his lips. With a hint of teasing sarcasm, he said: “That’s not what you told me last time."

Ji Ling's expression froze.

Gabriel continued: "Last time, you told me that you wanted nothing more than for him to die. Shouldn't you be happy that I'm helping you kill him now?"

Ji Ling wanted to cry on the spot!

Oh gosh, he had been so busy worrying about Ning Yu just now, that he’d almost forgotten this. In order to escape from this terrifying man last time, he’d brought Ning Yu out as a front, saying that Ning Yu was Jing Sui’s real true love, and that he hated Ning Yu the most and wanted to kill him so much…

If he’d known things would come to this today, he definitely would’ve kept his mouth shut back then and never spouted that nonsense.

Words spoken out were like milk already spilt. Once out there, it was too late to take back. Ji Ling looked at Gabriel dumbly. A moment later, with the blink of an eye, his eyes filled with tears.

The him of today was no longer the him of the past!

After dealing with that group of scheming bosses, his acting skills were no longer at the level they used to be!

Ji Ling's expression turned grey like dying embers. With a bitter smile, he said: "What's there to be happy about? Even if I kill Ning Yu, His Majesty won't really love me. What's the point then... "

Looking at the man in front of him, it seemed as if he was trying to hold back the tears in his eyes, but they still flowed down across his paled cheeks uncontrollably. In a pained and sad voice, he said: "I schemed against him before, all to attract His Majesty's attention. When I said I wanted to kill him, it was just my anger talking… I’m already Carlos' fiance now, what use is it for me to scheme against someone unrelated?"

Ji Ling said this, and felt the man's grip on his chin tighten. His face couldn’t help but pale further, and he was beside himself with anxiety. Who knew if Gabriel would buy it?

Afterwards, he heard a hoarse sneer: "It seems that you really do love the emperor a lot…”

Ji Ling's eyes reddened, and he appeared as if he was in great pain because his deep love turned to hate. He avoided Gabriel’s gaze and said coldly: "I don't love him anymore."

There wasn’t an ounce of warmth in Gabriel's black eyes. He looked at Ji Ling as if he was lost in thought, and slowly said in a cool and casual way: "Even if that’s true, in the eyes of nobles like you, Ning Yu is just an insignificant lower link. He’s not worth begging for mercy to you, so your reasoning…doesn't convince me. "

Ji Ling thought to himself, this guy is too difficult to deal with. He has to force me onto a path of no return! Suddenly, he flipped his expression. Raising his head proudly, he put on a lofty gaze, and pursed his lips, saying: "But this lower link just risked his life to save me. I won't owe him any favors!"

Gabriel didn't retort this time. He thought about it and said: "That does sound rather logical.”

Ji Ling's eyes lit up. Had he finally convinced him? But before he could even feel happy, he heard the man laugh with seemingly cruel and wicked undertones: "Unfortunately, I don't believe a single word you say… Because you are a crafty little liar."
