Chapter 8.1 - Brandon

Ji Ling raised his chin, giving them a provocative look.

The soldiers behind Ning Yu heard him, and one by one, their eyes turned red with anger. They looked at Ji Ling, wishing they could kill him on the spot!

The intent on both sides was getting stronger and stronger. When they were at the breaking point, one of the soldiers suddenly turned to stand at attention and raised his hand to salute in Ji Ling’s direction. His voice was loud and clear saying: “Marshal, Sir!”

Everyone was shocked by the news, and then they saluted one after another. Seeing the respect of the soldiers, Brandon's unshakeable status in the army was obvious!

Although Ji Ling knew he was coming, he still tightened subconsciously. Slowly turning back, he saw the tall cold man standing not far behind him.

A neat black military uniform wrapped around his strong body. He had cold pronounced facial features, and a pair of sharp eyebrows could be seen under the brim of his hat. In his cool gray pupils, there seemed to be a deep and complex emotion being repressed, as if something was brewing.

Rhodes almost fainted in fright. Seeing Marshal Brandon like this, he must be extremely angry! So he did actually hear what was said just now!

The soldiers who were feeling humiliated and angry all gloated as they looked at Ji Ling, ridicule showing in their eyes: What happened to your arrogance just now? Didn’t you say that the marshal wouldn’t do anything to you? You don’t even have an ounce of self-awareness! When the marshal gets angry, he won’t care about your identity. Even His Majesty is polite to the marshal, so what’s a mere rich kid like you in his eyes?

Ji Ling certainly understood this point, but he acted ignorant and fearless like a pro. He acted like he didn’t notice Brandon’s expression at all, and said carelessly: "Brandon, Sir, your men dared to disrespect an aristocrat such as myself! Shouldn’t you give me some compensation? "

Rhode’s face turned deathly pale when he heard this. He finally gave up hope completely, and only wished to go home alive today...

The others all looked at Ji Ling like he was mental. He had to be either stupid or crazy.

You still dare to ask the marshal for compensation?

Ji Ling was the only one without fear! He waited satisfied for Brandon to order his men to throw him out.

Although the consequences were shameful and embarrassing, wasn’t that exactly what he wanted? He wasn’t worried about his life at all. It was just losing face, after all… Brandon was a cold-blooded military soldier, and it was actually because of this that he was considered a principled man. Although Brandon would deal with him out of disgust and disdain, it wasn’t to the point that he’d kill him, because he didn’t go further than bad-mouthing.

Compared to the hidden ruthlessness of Carlos and the crafty maliciousness of Wen Yan, Ji Ling was actually more relaxed when facing people in the protagonist’s camp. He was the typical type that bullied the ‘good,’ and feared the evil.

Brandon stared at the young man in front of him who had his chin raised high. His eyes fell onto those clear blue eyes, and his expression turned a little darker. His tight lower jaw betrayed the tumultuous mood in his heart. A long while later, he slowly opened his mouth and hoarsely uttered a word: "You..."

Everyone was on edge.

Ji Ling perked his ears up, wanting to hear how he’d get slapped in the face. At this time, a sturdy and stout figure suddenly rushed up with incomparable speed! Like a mountain crashing down, he blocked in front of Ji Ling, and roared loudly: "Marshal, calm down!"

Ji ling: "???”

Rhodes: "???”

Soldiers: "???”

Lieutenant General Hawk firmly guarded Ji Ling behind him, just like an old hen protecting her chick. He sheepishly spoke with a pleasing laugh: "Sir, Young Master Ji didn't mean it. He was just joking, so don't be angry…”

As soon as Lieutenant Hawk’s words came out, he saw Brandon's eyes suddenly flash coldly with undisguised killing intent! His stout body involuntarily went stiff for a moment, and cold sweat streamed from his forehead...

But remembering Archduke Carlos’ command, he gritted his teeth and didn’t move, standing there as immovable as a mountain. He waved one of his hands behind his back, and motioned Ji Ling and Rhodes to leave with the corner of his eye!

Ji Ling’s eyebrows wrinkled slightly. This Lieutenant Hawk didn’t appear here last time. Why is he suddenly coming to mess things up? He ignored Lieutenant Hawk's hints and continued to provoke Brandon discontentedly. Pointing directly at Ning Yu, he snorted coldly: "Who said I was joking? This lower being dares to look down on me. I definitely won’t leave today without showing him some color. "

His action and speech were extremely insulting.

Ning Yu looked at him coldly. His thin lips pressed together slightly, and his handsome face seemed like it was covered in a layer of frost.

Brandon didn’t pay heed to Ji Ling, but looked at Lieutenant General Hawk instead. There was a chill in his low voice, as he pronounced each word, “Move out of the way."

Lieutenant General Hawk only came because he felt there was huge tension building! He also didn't expect Brandon to be angry to this point. If he got out of the way now, Ji Ling definitely wouldn’t be able to leave in one piece! Although he had always kept a low profile and really didn’t want to go against Brandon in the army, if anything  happened to Ji Ling today, facing Archduke Carlos’ would be even worse!

At the thought of this, Lieutenant Hawk's eyes turned firm and he said to his men, "What are you still standing there for? Do you think just anybody can enter the military base? Hurry up and guide Young Master Ji out! "

His subordinates immediately understood. Ignoring Ji Ling’s protests, they politely pulled him outside with force.

Ji Ling didn't expect things to change like this, and was stunned for a moment. He angrily jumped: “Who said I wanted to leave! Hey—”

Rhodes had finally recovered, and was so eager to survive that he desperately covered Ji Ling's mouth and dragged him out alongside several of the soldiers.

Ji Ling could only stare hopelessly : Ow, ow, ow, I’m not leaving! I’m not going until there’s some face slapping. Let go of me, you bastards! How dare you, ow, ow, ow!

Brandon's expression sank. Just as he was raising his feet to walk over, he was once again blocked by Lieutenant General Hawk.

Brandon couldn’t help but be stopped in his tracks. After a while, he slowly lowered his eyes and looked at the man who was desperately trying to stop him. The pressure around his whole body dropped so low that the air seemed to stagnate.

Lieutenant General Hawk's smile grew stiff.

Brandon's killing intent surged inside. For a moment, he really wanted to kill this bastard who blocked his way, but his remaining reason stopped the impulse and slowly calmed him down.

Little by little, the youth’s figure disappeared from his sight.

Although he really wanted to chase after him, and give him another glance, Brandon looked around at his surroundings. He saw everyone looking at him in awe and fear, he saw Ning Yu's forbearing expression, he saw Lieutenant General Hawk desperately trying to block him… and he knew it wasn’t possible for him to give chase now.

A few days ago, he had a very, very long dream.

In the dream, he and Jing Sui had finally defeated all their enemies and created the world they wished for. It took many, many years… Theoretically, that life went exactly as he wanted, and his ending was satisfactory too. There shouldn’t have been any regrets, but was that really true?

When Brandon was lying down at his house, quietly waiting for his long life to come to an end, he suddenly realized that he had a regret.

Just that that little tiny regret was deliberately buried in the deepest corner of his heart as time went on, so that he had forgotten it.

But he remembered it again in the last moments of his life…

and realized that he’d never put it down.

He was eternally regretful… In his memory, that lively, ostentatious young man, who seemed arrogant, but was actually kind and brave, burned up all his love and courage, but didn’t reach a satisfactory ending. During his most beautiful years, his life ended in such a dismal way.

No one cared about his efforts, and no one saw his sincerity.

Even though the boy had saved him... he hadn’t given him the reward and respect he deserved, because of his deep-rooted prejudice. He ignored the youth’s step-by-step descent into the darkness.

In his long life, his only regret was this debt to the youth.

He was the only one he gave up on.

In the last moment of his life, this deep seed had been unsatisfied and finally broke through to sprout, making him realize that he hadn’t lived his whole life with a clear conscience. If he was given another chance, he definitely wouldn’t misunderstand him and hurt him like that again. He would take good care of him and protect him, not only to return the debt when he saved his life, but because he was worthy of being treated well instead of being rejected and hurt by everyone.

If only he could see him again… but it was too late. This regret would eventually be brought to the grave with him.
