“I see. To think Aria would end up like that.”

I bowed my head deeply in front of Margravine-sama.

As I spoke about Aria’s situation, her expression started to look as if she’d bitten on a bug.

Margravine-sama had already laid some groundwork yesterday.

The paperwork to adopt Aria were finished this morning.

“Then, getting her into the tournament as well as the party would be difficult.”

“For now, it would seem so.”

Most likely, Margravine-sama wanted her to continue making good progress in the tournament.

The aristocrats had finally gathered in the capital. It would have been the perfect time for an unveiling party.

But Aria’s current condition wouldn’t allow for that.

She lost her composure just by the butler knocking on the door.

“…I thought she could go pretty far with the weapon she received from the alchemist, but it can’t be helped.”

“I’m sorry.”

I bowed my head.

“…Don’t worry about it. It’s probably for the better.”

“That, may be true.”

Regardless of the country, strength is the most valuable aspect to an aristocrat.

It’s a common troupe that the second son, who won the martial arts tournament, pushes aside the disappointing eldest son and succeeds the family headship.

Margravine-sama still believes Aria can’t use magic, but in reality, no one in this country could defeat her.

If she knew that, she might have changed her mind about adopting her.

In other words, the reasons to keep the village a secret has increased.

“…In any case, I’ll use my name to allow her absence from the second match. I still haven’t prepared for the party, so could you tell her to go back to the village and rest? There’s also the thing with Flemia house, so it might not be possible today, but she should be able to go home tomorrow.”

“I will do that.”

With Aria in such a state, it’s better if she went back to the village.

That’s not the only reason though.

“…Um, Margravine-sama. I had a request to make, if that’s alright?”

“? What is it?”

“From now on, I would like to continue being the communicator to the outside world. Would that be alright?”

“You?”

Margravine-sama surveyed me from head to toe.

“Why in the world would you want that?”

“Aria is currently like so. It is unknown when and how she will recover. In that case, there needs to be someone to replace her.”

“…”

Margravine-sama narrows her eyes.

It felt like her gaze was penetrating me.

This is the person who managed a Margravate until now.

I now realized just how much she had gone out of her way for us.

“…It doesn’t look like you have ulterior motives.”

“None.”

I seem to have gained her approval.

I felt cold sweat trickling down my back.

However, I couldn’t let go of my tension just yet.

“Well, that’s fine. I’ll approve of your wish. Take the necessary document from the butler later.”

“Thank you very much.”

I bowed my head deeply and finally left Margravine-sama’s office.

“Then it’s okay to go home, right?”

“Yes. We have Margravine-sama’s permission. However, there’s still some preparations left, so I would like to leave tomorrow.”

“Alright. Aria, how do you feel about that?”

When I looked towards her, Aria was staring at her feet.

“…I’m sorry.”

Aria squeezed that out.”

“It wasn’t supposed to be like this. I thought I could do well, since I got stronger. That I could produce results in the tournament, and be useful to everyone.”

Tears came pouring down.

Milia hugs Aria tightly.

“Aria is still being useful.”

“That’s not true. I’ve only caused trouble for you and Lain.”

“Even now, you only participated for Sui’s and Reno’s sake, right?”

“No. It wasn’t like that.”

Aria shakes her head like a spoiled child.

“I wanted it to be that way. For Reno and Sui’s sake. That’s how I said it would be. But, after coming here, and fighting, I realized it. I only wanted to be acknowledged. By father. By aristocrats. By everyone that looked down on me.”

“…Aria.”

“That’s why, I was shocked by everyone’s reaction. That’s why I jumped at hearing father wanted to see me. I, only thought about myself. That’s why I caused trouble for Lain, for Milia, even Margravine-sama. I, I… I’m so sorry!”

Aria lets out a sob in self-derision.

I gently pat her head.

“Everyone’s like that. Me included.”

Aria lifts her face and looks at me.

Her eyes were opened wide in astonishment.

Well, it’s my first time talking about this after all.

“But you know, it’s not a lie that I want everyone to live in safety. I want you all to be strong enough, so that you don’t feel anxious even in that place. That’s not a lie either. Isn’t that true for Aria as well?”

“…”

“Of course, a part of me wanted to do this for myself. But wanting to do so for others in the village is no lie either. Right? Or do you think nothing about me or those back at the village?”

“No way! Lain and everyone from the village are precious to me!”

Aria replies to my question in a strong tone.

My cheeks loosen involuntarily, seeing her like that.

I was happy to be considered precious by Aira.

Ultimately, I wanted the same approval from others that Aria was looking for.

“I was so happy to see Aria working hard for us. That feeling won’t change even if Aria was doing it to get back at aristocrats.”

Milia hugs her tightly.

“Milia…”

“Aria. Thank you for working so hard.”

For a while after that, Aria continued crying on her shoulder.
