Chapter 107

“With this, it’s finally done!”

I finished building the wall surrounding the field.

I say wall, but it’s simply a raised pile of dirt.

It would break by winter, so something like this would do.

It was enough to prevent greywolves from trespassing.

It won’t fall over even if it was pushed by hand, so it was plenty strong as well.

“Great work Lain. Milia came by earlier to tell us that Kili was done with the work she was in-charge of, so we should be finished now. Although, Kili was exhausted after using up all her magic.”

While I was confirming the wall’s strength by patting it, Aria talked to me from the side.

The fact that Kili’s work was over meant that this entire field was covered with walls.

So Milia came here earlier to tell us that.

(To think we’d really get this over with in two weeks)

The last two weeks passed by in an instant.

The monsters were overflowing at a higher rate than I expected, and clean-up was quite a challenge.

If I had to say what exactly was challenging, it would be locating all the monsters.

I’m pretty sure they were overflowing before last year too, but there were also herds of several greywolves as well.

In those cases they would scatter and run away, so I had to chase after them to find them.

It might’ve been fine to ignore the ones that may or may not have been there, but it wasn’t good to leave the ones I saw myself.

Besides that, I even ended up in a place that was more than a day’s travel from home, while chasing greywolves down.

I ended up causing Aria and the others a lot of worry that day.

After coming back, they scolded me with tears in their eyes which showed how worried they were.

I feel really bad for doing that.

The biggest reason for my failure was because I tried using a mysterious magic tool from the ruins.

Since I tried defeating them with it, I had to get close enough to the monsters which made them run away.

It would have been over in an instant had I just used [Wind Blade]. That’s what I should have done.

If you find something, you can’t resist using it.

There was no explanation manual or anything, so I had to use it myself in order to figure out its effects.

While I tested its functions to see why it wasn’t working, the monsters noticed me and ran away several times.

I should have researched it beforehand.

Besides that, I found traces of people several times, and dealing with those was also why the search took so long.

Though most of the time there were only traces of bonfires.

There was one time when I helped someone because they were being attacked, but they ran away at full-speed after taking a single look at me.

Even though I was convinced my face in this world was handsome, and not scary.

I asked Milia about it later, and she said it could have been a trader or an adventurer.

Ruins could be found near the demon forest, so they came here sometimes to strike it rich.

Leaving aside adventurers, I thought it would be good to bring traders back to the village, but Sieg-san was being sent here by Margravine-sama once a month, so any other traders were supposedly unnecessary.

Adventurers were also responsible for hunting the monsters overflowing from the demon forest, but based on the level of adventurers in this country, they would be no match for the monsters around the forest.

Then why did they come here? Well on top of the large number of monsters, the quality of magic stones to be found was also too good, so such people occasionally showed up.

(But Kili sure has gotten better at using magic)

In the meantime, a considerable amount of time had passed, and the wall building that I was supposed to do got delayed.

As such, partly because the farming work got done early, I had Kili start working on a section of it.

She said she wanted to try it after all.

I was in charge of the parts that I could do by today, and Kili was in charge of the other parts.

Even though I did most of the areas, I thought I needed to help Kili after I finished my part.

Despite growth being easiest to see right after you start training, I thought everyone’s growth speed was really amazing.

“Then, all that’s left is to sow the seeds. Will we be able to resume exploring the day after tomorrow?”

“Reno’s done with that too. Sui supplied water to the plants as well, so we can start as soon as tomorrow. Also, the day after tomorrow is a holiday.”

“Ah, right. Then let’s start from tomorrow. If we didn’t go tomorrow, and instead resumed exploring 3 days later, Reno would start to pout.”

Reno used to enjoy exploring.

She’d just found the ruins before the trip to the royal capital, so I could understand how she felt.

The effect of magic was strong here, so the field would grow on its own as long as it got water.

I don’t know what they’re growing, but it should be fine even if it’s left alone.

We even built a wall.

Aria and Milia were the ones who decided what to grow, based on last year’s results.

I didn’t know much about this country so I shouldn’t interfere, and I didn’t.

“For now, let’s talk about our plans going forward, by evening, today.”

“You’re right. I think that would be good.”

It was time for dinner soon.

We should finish talking about our plans from tomorrow, after that.

Aria and I began our walk home.
