Ch134 - Heaven’s Gift

The course of events for this award ceremony wasn’t really any different from other award ceremonies. The only thing was that everyone, including the host, were mega stars that often appeared on the silver screen. The host on stage had a head full of short blonde hair. She had built her career through her talk show, and she was very good at livening up an atmosphere. She kept things from getting boring, so the audience was more than happy to watch.

Gu Qingchi wasn’t like the other audience members and celebrities, hanging onto each and every word. Gu Qingchi knew that he wasn’t going to win an award. He hardly even knew what awards were up for grabs and he didn’t recognize very many of the nominees, so his sense of anticipation was pretty nonexistent. He would simply applaud as each result was announced.

The awards were announced one by one. Once the awards for best actor and best actress were announced, the acting categories would have all been announced. The rest of the awards were for the music or direction of a film.

Xie Luyu would look up from time to time and cast a glance.

Gu Qingchi slowly started to get distracted. He relaxed and very naturally leaned back in his seat. He crossed his legs, one hand on the armrest, and slowly started to daze off as he stared at the logo on the left side of the stage. His first thought was about whether Xie Luyu would be disappointed if he didn’t win the award. His second thought was about how he’d run out of in-game currency earlier this morning.

The host was currently interacting with the audience.

“I just want to say that this year’s ceremony is very special, and I mean very, very special. In fact, I didn’t even know who the winner was when I first saw his name. I initially thought, ‘Oh, how far the standards have fallen.’ However, after watching a movie clip of him — everyone knows that hosts get to see clips that are played before the winner is announced — after watching that clip, I could only say, ‘I expect no less from the Golden Globes.’”

There was a small burst of laughter from the audience.

Once the host laid the groundwork, he then began announcing the next award.

“Next, I will now announce the winner of the Dell Award.”

This award was named after a documentary director of the same name. The award had been created specifically for him. He had been far out at sea on a fishing boat, chasing after whales, when he took some absolutely spell-binding footage. Upwards of a thousand whales swam past his boat. It could only be described as a thrilling occurrence, and it was all caught on camera.

This award was typically reserved for directors or cinematographers.

The host deliberately paused for a moment before announcing the winner.

“The winner is … Gu Qingchi.”

Gu Qingchi had yet to catch up with this sequence of events. He assumed that another award had been announced, so he quickly came back to his senses and waited for the winner to go on stage and receive their award. One of the cameras had already turned towards Gu Qingchi. On the big screen, Gu Qingchi was seen being startled back to attention by the applause, turning his head towards the big screen, and clapping along with everyone else. Once he realized the person on the screen was himself, his applause began to slow before finally coming to a stop.

Gu Qingchi looked at himself on the screen, his face blank. He thought that the cameraman must have made a mistake.

[Ahhh! What are you doing, baby!? It’s you on the screen! No need to doubt it! In addition, I just want to say that this camera quality would have demolished me on the spot. I’ve been meaning to complain about their camera for a long time now. It doesn’t leave the slightest bit of mercy, so celebrities always end up looking worse for wear.]

[Gu Qingchi manages to look perfectly fine though … ]

[He’s been caught! It’s like when you’re eating snacks in class and you look up and find the teacher staring right at you.]

[How did he not notice all those people looking at him?]

[Kellerman is next to him. Oh, they’re talking to each other. He must have explained it to Gu Qingchi. I almost left the livestream just a moment ago. It’s a good thing I stayed.]

Gu Qingchi only found out that he’d won the award after listening to what the people next to him were saying. He subconsciously turned towards Xie Luyu. Xie Luyu gestured for him to head up to the stage. Xie Luyu just so happened to be seated on the path to the stage, so he got up and walked over to him.

Once he made it to the other’s side, the other stood up and hugged him. He spoke into his ear as they were hugging, flying through his words.

“No need to be nervous. It’s a good thing. You’ll walk through here and up onto the stage, and then you’ll give an acceptance speech. You can just say something along the lines of, ‘I’m very honored to receive this award today. I’m also very grateful to the director and the staff for they have been such a huge help.’”

Several people stood up and hugged him as he made his way to the stage, some of them he didn’t even recognize. Gu Qingchi bewilderedly hugged every single one of them. Having this buffer made it so that, by the time he made it on stage, he wasn’t that nervous anymore.

His performance had been playing on the big screen ever since he got up. It was all close-ups, every quirk of his lips in vivid display. Slater was truly good at what he did. The retro-style color correction was very comfortable. The composition of the scene was also very well-done. His dark hair was slightly curled, giving it a sense of volume and elegance.

The host was a blonde celebrity in a suit, and she was currently smiling along with everyone else.

She then gave his hand a kiss, her lips landing gently on her own thumb.

“I’m very pleased to meet you.”

There was a burst of applause from the audience.

Once the host handed him the award, she gave him the stage. Gu Qingchi took the award and nodded his head to express his gratitude. He quickly adjusted the microphone. He then began his speech as instructed by Xie Luyu.

“I’m very honored to win … ”

Gu Qingchi paused. He then looked down at the words on the trophy and read it out loud.

“…. the Dell Award at the Golden Globes.”

The comment barrage was absolutely gleeful.

[Hahaha, does he even know which movie he won the award for?]

[I really want to know what Xie Luyu said to Chi Chi.]

[Ode was the one who just got up and hugged Gu Qingchi. Hahaha, I’m here to expose him. He doesn’t know Chi Chi. He only got up to get a hug. He said a couple days ago that he’s basically only here to see his idols.]

Gu Qingchi only took a dozen or so seconds to say that line. It was very, very short. However, the amount of time reserved for winners to speak was actually very long. He paused for a few seconds, not knowing how to proceed, and the audience began to laugh good-naturedly.

Gu Qingchi pursed his lips in embarrassment. He then began to laugh himself.

“I was actually very surprised. I came here with my lover. He’s here in the audience.”

The camera turned towards Xie Luyu.

Xie Luyu was leaning forward, his elbows resting on his knees, earnestly watching Gu Qingchi. He smiled when he heard this, his eyes reflecting the lights on the stage. He looked absolutely smitten.

The comments were also in avid discussion.

[I’m always getting the feeling that his eyes are full of Chi Chi. It’s his deep set eyes that make him look so passionate.]

[I’m seriously laughing myself to death. Xie Luyu hadn’t won any of the awards the first time he attended. He was young, and the host had teased him a lot at the time. Nearly all the winners that year went out of their way to give him a hug. He was so angry that he ended up making a post declaring that, if he didn’t win an award, he definitely wasn’t going to give anyone a hug, and he actually followed through with it. He was super arrogant.

However, Gu Qingchi won an award this year, and he was the first to stand up. He even spoke with him for a bit. It really is a slap in his own face! Hilarious.]

[Isn’t this like going to do something with a classmate but your classmate ended up not making it but you did? Chi Chi is really very upright. He straight up revealed the truth. “I came here with someone else. I didn’t think I would win.”]

[Xie Luyu, let’s wait another two years. Xie Luyu may have won the award for best actor at a very young age, but I think they’re going to hold back on giving it to him this time.]

[Hahaha, he even took a peek at the host. Is he afraid that she’ll be angry? So cute.]

Gu Qingchi continued to speak.

“He was just telling me how to give an acceptance speech, but there wasn’t enough time, so it’s a little short.”

He then paused, somewhat embarrassed, as everyone in the audience laughed. He waited until it was quiet before continuing.

“However, I really am truly grateful to the director and staff as they were all very good people. I’m also very grateful to my lover. He helped me so much. It could be said that they saved my mess of a life.

There’s also my fans. They were always there for me. Sometimes, they would pick me up from the airport or call out my name or tell me they like me or talk about my good points. I don’t really think I’m that great. However, I’m glad that they like me. Quite frankly, I need them a lot more than they need me.”

It was at this moment that someone in the audience excitedly waved his hand, and the camera panned over to him. It was Ode. He mouthed something and then pointed at himself, indicating that he was a fan.

[Hahaha, this award show is now an idol fan meet.]

[Chi Chi, you’re too good! Stanning him is really great. I don’t need to buy the stuff he endorses, and I don’t need to buy tickets for his movies. My mom also likes him a lot. She’s always telling me to learn from Chi Chi and try to get into X University. He even made a post encouraging fans to go to bed on time.]

[Hahaha, that part about your mom is too real. He’s loved by parents all over the world.]

Gu Qingchi had his back against the big screen, still speaking earnestly.

“Lastly, I would like to give special thanks to my family and to my lover. I really don’t know what to say, but it’s a blessing to love and be loved by them.”

Gu Qingchi won an award. Xie Luyu was even more excited about it than Gu Qingchi. He was an acting enthusiast himself. He regarded winning a Golden Globe as the best thing that could happen, so he was thrilled for Gu Qingchi.

Once they got back to their hotel, Xie Luyu held the trophy in his hands for a long time, passing it through his hands over and over. Xie Luyu and Gu Qingchi were staying in the same room. It came with a drawing room and a single bedroom. Initially, the trophy was placed on the bedside table, but the trophy was small and would easily fall off the bedside table. Hence, they moved a large table against the end of the bed and set it there. It was fortunate that the bedroom was big enough to fit a large table.

Xie Luyu took one more look at it before going to bed.

“How nice. It’s just like mine.”

Gu Qingchi was reading the magazines provided by the hotel. He was a little amused by what the other said.

“The label at the bottom is different.”

“They’re not that different. This is going in our living room cabinet once we get back.”

Xie Luyu already had his own room at Gu Qingchi’s place. Since moving in, he’d taken to calling everything in the homes theirs.

Gu Qingchi had already put down the magazine and was about to go to sleep, a little sleepy. He hummed in response and curled into the blanket.

Xie Luyu also decided to go to bed. He turned off the lights, leaving only a night light on the bedside table. He got under the blanket and laid his head right by Gu Qingchi’s. Gu Qingchi closed his eyes and nuzzled against his neck.

Xie Luyu lowered his head and dropped a kiss on the tip of Gu Qingchi’s nose. He whispered.

“Good night.”

Once some time had passed, Xie Luyu was fairly sure that Gu Qingchi had fallen asleep. He opened his eyes, watching Gu Qingchi. He then sighed and gave him another kiss before closing his eyes and trying to sleep.

Gu Qingchi couldn’t help letting out a giggle, his entire body trembling. Some of the things that Xie Luyu did were just too cute.

“What are you sighing for?”

Xie Luyu faltered. He hadn’t wanted to say at first. However, Gu Qingchi kept asking, so he finally told the truth.

“It’s just — I was going to propose tonight.”

Gu Qingchi opened his eyes upon hearing this and looked up at him.

“I was planning to win the award I was nominated for. I knew the likelihood was pretty low, but, if it all worked out, I was going to propose right there on the spot and give you both the trophy and the ring. It was fine if I didn’t win. I brought my trophy from before with me. I already prepared the flowers and everything, but now you have the exact same trophy yourself.”

Xie Luyu looked a little bummed. It had taken him a while to muster up the courage to propose because he still remembered what the fans had said. Marriage, from this point forward, would always be a shadow for Gu Qingchi. He was prepared to fail. No big deal. In the days to come, he would have countless opportunities to try again. However, he didn’t expect his failure to be such a nonevent.

Gu Qingchi countered.

“They’re not the same. The label at the bottom is different.”

He then asked.

“Where’s my ring?”

Xie Luyu’s eyes widened. He then got up, practically jumping out of the blanket, and rummaged through the drawers of the bedside table. He’d hidden it very well. He groped around the inside of the drawer for quite a while before finally pulling out the ring. He then knelt down on the spot, but he soon realized that he was missing something.

“Wait just one moment.”

He was practically sprinting out the room. He even slipped a little by the door.

Some ten seconds later, he rushed back in, this time with a bouquet of roses in his arms and a trophy in his hand.

Xie Luyu took a breath and walked to Gu Qingchi. He first handed the flowers and the trophy to Gu Qingchi. He then knelt down on one knee. He nervously licked his dry lips. He didn’t say anything fancy. He just got straight to the point.

“Will you marry me?”

Gu Qingchi very seriously replied.

“Yes.”

The events at the award show were very attention-grabbing. The very next day, both foreign and domestic media outlets began to publish related news. The coverage was wall-to-wall and overwhelmingly positive.

[Internationally Certified Beauty.]

[The Fashion Industry’s Darling Conquers The Golden Globes.]

[The Person Who Changed The Rules Of The Golden Globe Awards.]

Gu Qingchi was featured on the cover of the illustrious Entertainment Pioneer. He was also placed in several interior pages. They were originally a newspaper, but, quite frankly, they hadn’t been a newspaper in a very long time. They were more of a magazine now, and they released a new issue every three months. In order to publish the photos of Gu Qingchi, they pushed their publication date forward a bit, and, as for the headline, it was He Is Heaven’s Greatest Gift. Several different media outlets were using this headline, big and small.

Xie Luyu also liked this headline very much. He bought a couple copies of these magazines and newspapers, one to collect, one to read, and one for Mrs. Gu. He also talked with Mrs. Gu about the articles complimenting Gu Qingchi.

Xie Luyu felt that this headline was truly apt. Gu Qingchi was a gift he held in the palm of his hand.

He was a gift, he was left to this world, and he came to him.

Translator’s Note:

Main story end! I’m going to take a week-long break and then I’ll be back with the four extras! Can’t believe we’re already at the end!

On another note, I would like recommend the song 好想爱这个世界啊 by Hua Chenyu. It’s such a lovely song, and I feel like it really encapsulates the message and story of this novel. I really recommend you all give it a listen!
