Arc 4 Chapter 4

The person who arrived was dressed in a moon-white embroidered robe that’s untainted by even a speck of dust. His long silk-like hair was leisurely tied up and slightly raised, as it was blown by the wind.

He had a pale-as-jade complexion, and a pair of eyes that seemed to gather the heaven and earth’s spirit. If one were to carelessly look at them, they were moving brilliantly. They were peerlessly incomparable.

“This one is called Yu Chiyan, Fan Yin’s close friend” As Yu Chiyan spoke, he lowly coughed a few times, the cold fragrance of medicine lingered on his body, “It just so happened that Benwang1 came here to get some medicine, I’ll bring you in with me.”

Shen Jiayan bowed with his hands held in front of him, “Many thanks, Wangye.”

“If you can have this Buddhist prayer beads with you, you must be a very important person to Fan Yin. So, you can call me Yan’er like him.” Yu Chiyan seemed to have a very poor constitution. Every few steps, he would cough a few times and a sickly red flush would appear on his face.

Shen Jiayan promptly evaded, “Replying to Wangye, I merely picked up this Buddhist prayer beads and didn’t take it for myself. Naturally, I also don’t dare to be on equal terms with Wangye.”

Yu Chiyan’s footsteps lagged for a bit, then he said “No harm” after quite a while. However, he didn’t mention the matter about letting Shen Jiayan call him “Yan’er” again.

The cypress trees in the temple were flourishing, and the sandalwood trees were rising in spirals, yet you could hear the sound of birds singing.

Yu Chiyan led Shen Jiayan around the temple like it’s a walk in the park, going through a winding path leading to a secluded place, which was Fan Yin’s Zen Room.

Lightly pushing open the door, Fan Yin could be seen leaning over the table. The pear flower-patterned desk was covered in rice paper, with an unfinished painting on top of it. The painting was only halfway done, it was a tree with peach flowers and the ground was filled with colorful flower petals. There was a young man who leisurely slept on the peach flower petals. His sleeping state was as fresh and clean as nature, and he should be having a good intoxicating dream.

It was a pity that the young man still didn’t have a face drawn onto him. Otherwise, it could be seen how stunning he was.

When Yu Chiyan looked at the painting, his heart sank inexplicably, but he still pretended to laugh and said jestingly, “Fan Yin, there was a saying in ancient times, ‘to paint a dragon with dots in the eyes’2. If you don’t draw his face, aren’t you afraid that the young man will come out of the painting and disappear into thin air?”

“No.” Fan Yin didn’t want this painting to be seen by other people. He waited for the ink to dry before storing it, then he asked, “Did you run out of medicine again?”

“Cough cough, the situation in the Imperial court has been treacherous recently. I have such a fragile and worn-out body, so I would inevitably consume medicine more quickly than others.” Yu Chiyan mockingly laughed at himself, “Isn’t the Flower God Festival coming up soon? The Crown Prince and Old Six were fighting like wildfire, vying for this job. After all, they could use this to win over the Ministers in a fair way, and the six Ministries could also take advantage of this opportunity to stuff their own pockets. The sandpiper and the clam fought against each other, then the fisherman caught both; but this fisherman who didn’t want to gain profit, is going through the suffering.”

Fan Yin poured the snow water into the purple clay pot to boil. A dark green tea leaf slowly floated to the surface of the water, then slowly sank down once again. It fluttered up and down, the fragrance of the tea permeated the place.

“The Emperor is getting old after all. Not wanting them to have a fight again, this matter is just a warning.” Fan Yin shook his head, “What a pity that the Crown Prince and the Sixth Prince doesn’t understand this in the end.”

“Certainly ah, Father Emperor is getting old after all.” Yu Chiyan neatly sipped the cup of tea, only then did the worry in his brows seem to completely disappear without a trace, “Only when I come here to you, could I steal half a day of leisure. Now that I have stolen the leisure, I must return. There are still a pile of matters for me to handle in the Ministry of Rites!”

Fan Yin handed the medicine in his hand to Yu Chiyan and told him to “Take good care of himself”.

Yu Chiyan looked at Fan Yin, and shot a glance towards Shen Jiayan. There seemed to be some concern in his features, but he still didn’t say anything in the end.

Yu Chiyan believed that the boy would become a source of trials and tribulations to Fan Yin. In that case, based on Fan Yin’s intelligence, it was impossible for him not to overcome this. Therefore, there was no need for him to say more.

Yu Chiyan covered his mouth to cough a few times, his eyes recovered its usual calm and gentle look.

Waiting for Yu Chiyan to leave afterwards, it was only then did Fan Yin ask Shen Jiayan, “How did you manage to cut yourself into such a sorry state?”

While Shen Jiayan wiped his face, the bloodstains and the traces of dirt were immediately mixed into a mess, even his originally fair skin was nowhere to be seen.

Shen Jiayan told him about the matter of how Yan Shi originally planned to frame him and how he managed to escape. In the end, he mysteriously pulled out the Buddhist prayer beads from his sleeves, and handed it to Fan Yin as if presenting him a treasure, “Shifu, look, it’s a good thing that I brought it.”

Fan Yin seized the opportunity to look at it, it was exactly the same Buddhist prayer beads that broke and were scattered on the ground of the Su residence that day. He never thought that Shen Jiayan would find each and every bead of it.

Shen Jiayan placed the Buddhist prayer beads on Fan Yin’s palm and then pointed at the end part of it to make him look, “There were still a few beads that I wasn’t able to find, so I used a few red beans to make up for them. Looking at the black Buddhist prayer beads lined up with the red beans3, it looks good, isn’t it?”

Since ancient times, red beans were the closest symbol of yearning.

Fan Yin subconsciously threw the Buddhist prayer beads on the floor, “Nonsense! How could the Buddhist prayer beads be strung together with red beans?”

“Why is it not allowed?” Shen Jiayan looked at Fan Yin with a pair of crystal-clear eyes that were as innocent as a child, one who was not well-versed with the matters of the world. “Does Shifu not like red beans?”

At this moment, Fan Yin recalled that Shen Jiayan’s mother had passed early on and Yan Shi would certainly not teach him about these matters of affection. So this matter would be excusable, because he didn’t know what gifting red beans to someone meant. Perhaps he really thought that these red beans were good-looking, right?

Fan Yin thought of this excuse for Su Yichen and reflecting on his own attitude just now, it made him secretly feel a little guilty.

Shen Jiayan bowed his head, there was a faint sobbing tone in his voice, “Shifu, do you not like the Buddhist prayer beads, or you simply don’t like me?”

Fan Yin stood with his hands at his side, neither speaking nor moving a fraction. But if one took a closer look, it could be seen that his lips were tightly pursed and his brows were slightly wrinkled, an obviously helpless look on his face.

Fan Yin wanted to say a few words of comfort to Su Yichen, but he never had much experience in comforting people. For a while, he didn’t know what words to say. He only felt that the most profound Buddhist Doctrines weren’t as difficult as coaxing people.

It was still Shen Jiayan who made the first move.

He slowly leaned down and picked up the Buddhist prayer beads from the ground, then he wiped off the dust on it with his clothes. His nose was red and there were tears welling up in his eyes, “Shifu, do you not want it?” It was as if once there was a hint of Fan Yin saying the word “no”, the tears would immediately roll down.

Fan Yin could only helplessly stretch out his hand and let Shen Jiayan put the Buddhist prayer beads on him.

As Shen Jiayan put it on him, he secretly pondered, ‘When the client originally confessed to Fan Yin, Fan Yin immediately avoided him and kept himself away; what if he didn’t confess but secretly influenced him?’

Shen Jiayan looked at the Buddhist prayer beads on Fan Yin’s wrist and raised a smile, it seemed that it wasn’t useless at all. At the very least, this was a good start.

Fan Yin used his wide sleeves to cover the Buddhist prayer beads on his wrist. Perhaps even he himself didn’t notice, he had already begun to indulge Su Yichen a lot more than other people.

When a person was willing to take a step back for another person, it was already foreshadowing that he would take countless steps back for him again in the future.

The following days, Shen Jiayan logically went to live in Tingchan temple.

First day.

“Shifu, this is a meatless dish I cooked for you, do you want to try it?”

“Weishi4 is not……” Hungry.

“Shifu, I’ve cooked this meatless dish for an entire half an hour.”

“Alright.” Fan Yin helplessly said, “Bring it to me and I will try it.”

Second day.

“Shifu, should I serve you while you take a bath? I can also help scrub your back.”

“Weishi can bathe myself.”

“Shifu, look. I burned my hand when I was boiling the hot water for you, there’s even a blister here.”

“If you dislike me troubling you……”

“No!”

Third day.

“Shifu, let me comb your hair. I just made a new comb.”

“Weishi doesn’t need it.”

“Shifu, I even cut my hand when I was making this comb.”

“Yun Chen.” Fan Yin called Shen Jiayan’s dharma name with a forbearing voice, “Weishi doesn’t have hair.”
