Chapter 2: Shao Si and Guangzong are back with their shenanigans

Shao Si slept until they arrived on set, getting dragged out of the car by Li Guangzong, all bleary-eyed and out of it.

Li Guangzong asked him worriedly, “Hey master, do you still remember all your lines?”

“Don’t worry” Shao Si rubbed his eyes as he headed to the dressing room, wondering about whether or not he could nap while getting his makeup done, saying nonchalantly “Daddy’s* got photographic memory.”

*TL/N: Shao Si is calling himself dad to assert his superiority haha XD.

Li Guangzong followed behind with Shao Si’s stuff, saying sincerely “If I have to call you daddy then so be it. As long as the shooting goes smoothly, you could even make me call you my ancestor… I’m just anxious that you’ll be too out of it, you know? You have a bad track record, which is why I’m worried.”

Shao Si’s memory was indeed exceptional. He could basically remember all his lines after a few looks at the script, but after having managed him for so many years, Li Guangzong knew him too well – his biggest worry was about Shao Si feeling sleepy.

Whenever this rascal stayed in a half-awake state, it resulted in one of two consequences. One result, which was forgetting his lines, was actually the better consequence of the two.

The second type of consequence was an ultimate reflection of his personality – he liked to overpower others with his ad-libbing.

No one could stand against his exceptional off-script acting.

Throwback to a little bit over half a year ago, while they were filming 《Anti-Drug》, there was a scene where the male lead had to go on an extremely dangerous secret mission, and there was a high chance that he would potentially leave and never come back. The male lead strayed from the squad, secretly returning home to visit his wife and kids, but was caught by his wife when he was about to leave.

In this scene, the actress playing the wife originally had 6 lines in the script, but Shao Si’s acting was so powerful, she just froze and started crying at the doorway. It was unclear whether she was crying because of the emotions from the scene, or if it was because her time to shine *cough cough* basically got taken away.

Anyway, although the director was very satisfied with the take, and all the staff were moved to the point of tears by Shao Si’s flawless off-script performance, the female lead truly couldn’t have such a meager amount of lines, so in the end it was an NG.

The more he thought about it, the more guilty and nervous Li Guangzong felt, suggesting, “How about you go wash your face first, and try not fall asleep while you’re getting your makeup done…maybe game for a bit, play that ‘War of Reincarnation’ or whatever it’s called that you were playing a few days ago. If that’s not enough to keep you awake, we can update your Weibo, it’s been a while since you last interacted with the fans.

Shao Si stopped dead in his tracks, slowly throwing out word by word: “Are you that set on watching me die from sudden cardiac arrest?”

He fixed his hair a little and reached out to push open the door to the dressing room, when the director walked by and noticed them: “What were you guys talking about just now? Looked like you were talking about something fun.”

Lo Guangzong gave Shao Si a nudge, warning him to shut his mouth and not speak carelessly, racing to answer: “Director Wang, we were just chatting about today’s filming. Ever since he took on your* film, Xiao Si* hasn’t relaxed a single moment, and kept having me practice with him… in fact, we actually practiced at least 7 or 8 times on the way here. Just now, He was even saying he wanted me to help go over his lines while getting makeup done.”

*TL/N: the “your” Li Guangzong used in this instance to address the director is a more respectful way of saying “you/your”. As for “Xiao” Si, Xiao’s literal meaning is little. It’s a way to show endearment and closeness, by referring to him as “little Si”

Shao Si: “……” Wow, so fake.

Director Wang, obviously, was super delighted after hearing all of that, “Use the time you’re supposed to rest to actually rest, don’t overwork yourself. I’ve heard all about how dedicated and hard-working this child is…you’re someone that I picked after so much effort and difficulty doing open auditions, I hope that we can work very well together.”

Shao Si was leaning against the doorway at first, as if standing would be too tiring of a position. Only when Li Guangzong pinched his lower back, did he reluctantly stand straight and greet Director Wang, “Don’t listen to his nonsense, I was sleeping the entire time in the car. If I do anything wrong later today, you don’t have to hold back and be polite, just scold me or yell at me, I’m tough enough to stand anything.”

Li Guangzong was immediately filled with regret for not having covered his mouth, “…”. You ignorant child.

“Ha ha ha ha,” Director Wang actually didn’t mind, he saw through their mischievous little banter, just giving Shao Si a pat on the shoulder, “That’s fine, go get ready. We’ll start rolling one hour from now.”

Director Wang’s, full name Wang Guojun, was considered to be an experienced and qualified individual in the directing circle, having started making films back in the 90’s.

The story he always liked to tell was how he would walk several miles just to see a film showing. In the early days of film entertainment, the film effects and quality of the projectors were most certainly subpar to now, but the many images and scenes that showed up on the screen, mixed in with the hot, humid weather, the slight sweaty smell of the crowd…fruit seeds and plant seed shells strewn all over the floor, noisy kids running all over the place. All those not so beautiful, ordinary things formed a lingering impression of films in his head, and became the foundation of his passion for filmmaking and the root of his inspiration.

His filming style was very realistic and natural, not showy at all. Even though the entertainment industry’s culture had long become quite perplexing and commercialized films were constantly being pumped out, Director Wang remained unaffected and maintained his role of being a ‘breath of fresh air’.

Shao Si really respected him.

But he really was so tired right now…

“Upload a Selfie, update your Weibo!”

Pretty much as soon as Shao Si shut his eyes, allowing the makeup artist to apply powder to his face, Li Guangzong relentlessly began to talk and nag him. Opening his eyes a slit, he saw the frontpage of Weibo in front of him, almost right up against his face.

‘’…” with a deadpan face, Shao Si said “Xiao baobei*, do you want to suffocate me by phone?”

*TL/N: another term of endearment/playful way of addressment between Shao SI and his manager. This time he’s calling Guangzong his [little precious] baby.

Li Guangzong held up the phone: “Daddy, your last post is from the Golden Dragon Awards Ceremony, which was three months ago, and you even just used the official press release photos. Could you get any lazier?”

Shao Si answered from the bottom of his heart: “Yes.”

Li Guangzong: “…”

Shao Si, with fear that Guangzong didn’t understand, even took the effort to explain with a few more words: “which is why I stopped updating.”

After a slight pause, he added, “And why I don’t want to update now either.”

Li Guangzong was extremely angered by these 16 words, forcibly getting Shao Si’s head in a nice pose and angle for a selfie, writing a post description while thinking, dammit! He’ll just do this stuff from now on, it’s hopeless to count on this master to do it himself.

Weibo Post: Starting work, this is my look today. What are all of you up to? [/fresh flowers][Muah][<3][image]

As soon as Li Guangzong posted, he said savagely through gritted teeth in hopes of getting Shao Si worked up: “You keep acting like this, and you’re bound to lose all your popularity, I’m telling you! Not listening to me, no social media updates, no strengthening of relationships with fans, don’t come to me crying in the future, saying I didn’t remind you!”

Shao Si: “‘kay.”

“Daddy look, it’s been posted for three seconds and there’s been no reaction yet, our era is ending!” Li Guangzong continued waving his phone in his face, alas Shao Si did not pay him any attention. Since he didn’t get any reaction, he stopped after a few more waves of the phone. Just then, the phone suddenly started vibrating like an 8.0 earthquake!

Countless private messages, comments, likes, flooded in like a tsunami.

Based on Li Guangzong’s many years of being an artist manager, he was aware and could not deny that just now, those three seconds were just a lag from getting too many notifications at once.

——Oh my God! Xiao Ye* updated!!! So handsome ahhhhhhh I’m not looking at a fake Weibo post, am I?!

*TL/N: literal translation is young master.

——Dammit, there’s another idol that I follow who updates everyday but I’ve never gotten as excited over that as I have over today’s post! I’m dead I’m dead I’m dead don’t save me!

Li Guangzong watched the comments surge exponentially. In just 10 minutes the phrase ‘Shao Si updated Weibo’ started trending. Seeing the fans get all excited like this, he didn’t want to admit it at all but Shao Si’s lazy tactic was a huge success.

Aware of what was going on with the post, Shao Si gave a knowing smile, asking: “Kid, you call this being unpopular?”

…Sooner or later you’re gonna lose your popularity!

So annoying!

What has become of this world?!

How should the xiaoxianruo* that are so diligent and work hard everyday feel?!

*literal translation is little fresh meat: refers to handsome, relatively young actors/idols

The makeup artist who heard the entire conversation unfold had been trying to stay calm the whole entire time, but finally couldn’t hold in her laughter, laughing until she was out of breath. She realized that she was stepping out of line with her laughter, but she couldn’t help it.

Shao Si turned his head to give the makeup artist a respectful nod, jokingly saying “Xiao mei mei*, if you keep laughing, I’ll have no choice but to sport my dark eye circles in the film,” he had a twinkle in his eye.

TL/N: playful way of addressing her, by calling her little sister

His persona had always been more on the cold side, his overall demeanor cold. Even his facial features evoked a feel of aloofness and unattainability. His eyes with half inner double eyelids that slightly curved up toward the outer edge of the eye, were especially mesmerizing and beautiful, like a pond —— one that was glazed over.

Even though the makeup artist wasn’t Shao Si’s fan, she knew that his company initially promoted him as an aloof individual, but right now this person was smiling at her, this was merciless murder…she just couldn’t resist his smile. Plus his conversation with his manager was just too cute!

She wasn’t a Shao Si fan in the past, but starting today Shao Si will become part of the list of celebrities she was destined to love!

The makeup artist blushed, gave a small cough. She wanted to say that she would immediately do his makeup, but couldn’t form a coherent sentence, and what she blurted out ended up being: “Sorry, I…I have to laugh a little longer.”

Shao Si: “Ok, take your time, I’m gonna sleep a bit. My skin’s so nice anyway that it won’t take long to do my makeup, Muah.”

Ha. ha. ha. ha. ha. ha. ha. ha. ha.

Li Guangzong could only give a few dry, lifeless laughs, feeling extremely awkward, That crazy guy.

“Muah”, was what he taught Shao Si to use when replying to fans over social media. Under these circumstances, why did he think he could use it? He wanted to ask Shao Si, did he really think it was suitable to use right now??

The entire time the makeup artist was doing Shao Si’s makeup, she was suppressing her overwhelming urge to post and share about this, trying her best to stop her hand from shaking.

She wanted to update her weibo so bad and show this cute Shao Si off to everyone ahhh!

Though Shao Si had his eyes closed, he was still conscious, and did actually spend some time going over his lines in his mind another time. After finishing, he unavoidably started mulling over Yang Yinyin.

[ Partner, don’t forget that we’re a “dark secret” juggernaut.]

[ Our goal is to expose all corruption and shady business to the public, thereby purifying and restoring peace in the entertainment world.]

The broken system’s words still rang in his ears.

Around two months ago, the system gave him a name list for the mission, on the list there was only Yan Yinyin’s name. With no other leads, he could only investigate starting with her, but until now, he still hadn’t uncovered additional information.

Last month, Yang Yinyin spent her time on set, at home, or at gatherings. In order to investigate further, he even risked getting killed by Li Guangzong, not giving his manager a heads up before doing a cameo appearance for Yang Yinyin’s drama, but found no abnormalities.

This woman, Yang Yinyin, was a gentle, smart, and reasonable person. Her ascent to the top of the industry and achievement of the film queen title didn’t happen in a single bound, but was a result of the popularity that she slowly accumulated through her work.

What secrets did she harbour?

“Aiya, sorry,” The makeup artist was so mesmerized by the beauty in front of her that she drew his eyeliner all crooked and almost poked him in the eye. She apologized profusely, “Are you ok? Does it hurt?”

“I’m ok.” Shao Si blinked a few times, not feeling any discomfort, “You can keep going.”

ヾ(`Д) Beautiful and famous, but so humble and not blinded by his fame, and even cute. She really was going to be charmed to death!

The makeup artist put her hand over her fluttering heart briefly, then continued to apply some eyeshadow, casually saying: “I feel a little embarrassed to say this, but last time I was with another film crew, I was in charge of doing Miss Yinyin’s makeup and messed up her eyeliner, too.”

TL/N: I can attest that it is very hard to keep your head cool when you’re seeing/meeting a celebrity you like up close XD

Shao Si: “Yang Yinyin?”

“Yeah, she received the film queen award this year, was on stage right before you got your award, actually.” The makeup artist continued, “The film queen’s super good-tempered, she didn’t scold me, and even gave me chocolate to calm my nerves.”

Because it had to do with the mission target, Shao Si became alert, replying: “Yinyin does have a really good temper, we interacted with each other a lot while filming ‘Lady Returning to the Village’, and have a pretty good personal relationship.”

TL/N: name derived from the Korean makjang drama and Chinese remake, Temptation of Wife and Home Temptation. Can search them up to read the plot haha

Li Guangzong was looking for a thermos cup in the backpack, thinking that Shao Si should be thirsty around now, and wanted to pass him some water, but was shocked by Shao Si’s casual mention of ‘Lady Returning to the Village’, almost throwing the thermos cup.

… Good heavens! How could he even have the audacity to mention that drama! I can forgive that you stupidly went to do a cameo, but you still dare to mention it!

Also, how were they personally close? Yang Yinyin only exchanged a few words with you the whole entire time.

Li Guangzong was bursting with anger on the inside.

The makeup artist who didn’t know the truth exclaimed in pleasant surprise: “Really?”

Wanting to keep probing, Shao Si continued glumly with an upset face: “Mn, but she recently…”

“Hm?”

“She seems to be caught up in something recently, but hasn’t been willing to talk to us, I’m really worried about her.” Shao Si looked up, his eyes filled with sincerity, “While you were on set, did you notice anything in particular? I want to help her but I don’t know how…”

Li Guangzong continued listening on the side in bewilderment: What are you even talking about???

Could it be that there was a problem with his memory? Did the two actually secretly become great friends without him noticing?

Done with Shao Si’s makeup at this point, the makeup artist started packing up the makeup box, thinking as she tidied up: “No? But if I have to say… It seems that there was one thing that I felt was a bit strange.”

The makeup artist recalled: “That day we were filming the last scene, I was going to leave early after finishing my work, but accidentally left a few boxes of eye shadow behind in the dressing room. When I went to get them, I heard someone arguing.”

“Was it Yang Yinyin?”

“I…I’m not sure, it sounded like her.”

Shao Si wanted to continue the conversation, but at this time, they heard a knock at the door, and Director Wang entered the room with the assistant director and two screenwriters.

This group of people basically held the highest authority on set, what were they coming to the dressing room for?

Shao Si watched as Director Wang started calling affectionately from the door: “Yan Zhou, sorry to keep you waiting” The whole group walked past Shao Si and headed to the corner of the dressing room, as if they had to meet someone.

The dressing room was huge and for shared use, as no one got any special treatment. It just so happened that today they were filming Shao Si’s solo scenes, so there weren’t many people in the dressing room. It wasn’t until the directors and screenwriters walked toward the corner of the room, did Shao Si notice that looking from his direction, someone was sitting in a spot covered up by a pillar.

At the sound of Director Wang’s jovial shout, the man put down the book he was reading and got up from his seat.

This time around, Li Guangzong really dropped the thermos cup.

…Gu, Gu Yanzhou.

TL’s note:

Will Shao Si finally remember what Gu Yanzhou looks like after this meeting?
