Through Thick and Thin

After eating two pieces of moss in a row, Xin Yun placed a third piece of moss to Yi Luo Xiang’s mouth, but she refused to continue eating. Although she was still just a seven and a half year old child, Yi Luo Xiang knew that in this environment and in this situation, each piece of moss held hope for survival. Although she was very hungry, and two pieces of moss resolved almost nothing and made her even hungrier, she still could not even any more.

If it were said that Yi Luo Xiang previously did not know the value of this moss, then after this incident where her blood was sucked, she understood everything. For the sake of survival, those four guys actually secretly attacked them and drank their blood, directly causing the deaths of her two close friends. If it were not for Xin Yun’s timely appearance, then she would have had a hard time surviving. Yi Luo Xiang knew that this life was given to her by Xin Yun…

Seeing Xin Yun stubbornly stuff moss into her mouth, Yi Luo Xiang did not understand. Why did this boy treat her so well. There had never been someone who had treated her this well.

Yi Luo Xiang’s dad and mom were hunters in the village. They relied on hunting every day to survive, but in reality, Yi Luo Xiang had never met her dad and mom. Earlier on, when Yi Luo Xiang was three years old, her dad and mom had already died. She was raised by the village.

As the villager’s hunters, all of the prey they caught was collected together. After her dad and mom died, she was raised by the entire village, thus she survived to this age. In her memory, Xin Yun was the only one who treated her this well.

She was too young, so she could only consume food but could not produce anything of value. Under these circumstances, who would truly treat her well? Thus… even if the village outside this well was turned to ash, she did not not feel too sad.

Of course, saying that she felt nothing was an exaggeration. Previously, when she had been in the village, she at least had a house to live in and had food to eat. Now, however, there was no village, so how would she continue living?

No need to mention she was a child, even if she was an adult, facing the plight of having her family members killed, perhaps she would be left wandering about aimlessly. Moreover, Yi Luo Xiang was presently still a child.

Subconsciously chewing the moss in her mouth, she felt a trace of a sweet flavor come from below her tongue. Yi Luo Xiang’s eyes gradually became moist. Right now, she was relying on someone else to survive, which made her more sensitive and perceptive. She could notice the harm others wished to inflict on her. She was even more likely to remember the good others did for her.

One piece…. two pieces… three pieces… under Xin Yun’s insistence, Yi Luo Xiang ate six pieces of moss. Although it did not sate her hunger, she no longer felt starved. In this sort of situation, this was absolutely unthinkable.

Watching Xin Yun, Yi Luo Xiang’s heart was left with an incredibly complex feeling. Could it be that there really was that much moss? No… That wasn’t possible. Based on the amount of moss that grew where the girls had sat, Yi Luo Xiang could determine how much there was. There definitely would not be too much.

Furthermore, so what if the amount was high? At this moment, they still did not know how long it would be until rescuers came. Who would dare to waste food. Being able to give her two pieces so that she did not starve to death was already a heavenly grace, but now, Xin Yun actually almost given her enough to feel full!

Yi Luo Xiang understood. The reason he gave her so much to eat was actually because she was sick. If she did not eat enough, the illness could worsen, leading to her death. But what did her death have to do with Xin Yun? It had to be known… that Xin Yun doing this meant he was giving his own hope of survival to her.

In order to survive, those four guys very viciously attacked them in secret. They sucked the blood of others to prolong their own lives, but Xin Yun gave up his life for her. Were the differences between people truly this large?

Originally, when the incident was occurring, Yi Luo Xiang very nearly collapsed. When she thought about it at that time, there was not a single good thing about men. They were vicious, selfish, dirty, and saw themselves as strong and capable of anything. Xin Yun, however, changed how she thought. Most importantly… in this world, there was still at least one very good boy.

Thinking up to this point, Yi Luo Xiang raised her head and looked at Xin Yun. Exposing a sweet smile, she did not think, that after all these years of not having someone who treated her well, someone who would treat her well would appear in her hour of need. Was this an arrangement made by the heavens?

Seeing Yi Luo Xiang’s sweet smile, Xin Yun’s heart was filled to the brim. He felt that any effort he expended for this smile was completely worth it.

Tenderly touching Yi Luo Xiang’s hair, Xin Yun stood up and softly said: “Alright, properly get some rest. It would be best to sleep for a while. Perhaps when you wake up, you will be completely better.”

Obediently nodding her head, Yi Luo Xiang listened and closed her eyes, doing her best to fall asleep. She also hoped that she could get better faster. When that time came, Xin Yun would not need to work so hard.

Before falling asleep, Yi Luo Xiang did not go back on her promise. She noted how many pieces of moss she ate today. Up to this day, she had been given 24 pieces of moss by Xin Yun. This had to be remembered.

The following few days, Yi Luo Xiang’s illness did not improve. Instead, it got worse. Her high fever persisted, making Yi Luo Xiang unable to even fall asleep. In reality… this was simply the result of Yi Luo Xiang breaking through and the process of her body getting accustomed to it. This was considered a normal reaction, but it was still a very dangerous situation. In fact, it was a very narrowly avoided danger. If she could not endure, then she would die.

That day, under the incomparable amounts of stimulation, her brain suffered the the most, causing inexplicable changes; however, this sort of change was extremely tiring. If Yi Luo Xiang could endure, then her future would be hard to imagine. However, if she could not endure, then she would die very quickly.

For the sake of protecting Yi Luo Xiang, Xin Yun could only deduct his own food. Each day, he would only eat three pieces of moss to maintain his life.

Just like this, the days flowed by, and Yi Luo Xiang’s illness finally stabilized. Although there were no signs of improvement, it did not get any worse.

Looking at how Xin Yun got thinner by the day, Yi Luo Xiang felt extremely bad. By the eighth day, Xin Yun’s steps were becoming shaky, as it looked like he would collapse at any moment; however, even if this was the case, Xin Yun still did not dare eat any extra moss. Yi Luo Xiang’s food consumption, however, never decreased once. Each day, she would have two meals, and each meal had six pieces of moss.

Finally, when Xin Yun was about to be no longer able to endure, on the ninth night, the second rainfall occurred. Standing in the middle of the well in ecstasy, Xin Yun opened his mouth wide and greedily drank the rain water that fell from the sky. Since there was water, he could continue enduring.

What was unfortunate, however, this rain only persisted for around three hours. Furthermore, the rainfall was not heavy. It very quickly came to an end. Although a great deal of rain landed in the well, aside from making the well muddy, there was no other change.

There would be another full week until rescuers came, unfortunately… Xin Yun was at his wit’s end. Although he should be able to endure for two days with the rain water he drank, there was not much moss remaining.

Perhaps some would ridicule him. They would ridicule how he could not plan around the amount of food, but Xin Yun was also very helpless. For the sake of trying to prevent Yi Luo Xiang’s illness from deteriorating, she had been given a minimum of six pieces of moss per meal for two meals each day. At the time, Xin Yun hoped that she would quickly recover, but who knew that her illness would continue for ten days; furthermore, it seemed that there were no signs of her improving?

Looking at the remaining seventeen pieces of moss in his bag, Xin Yun was completely dazed. What should be do… there were still six days, but there were only seventeen pieces of moss remaining. This would average out to less than three pieces per day. Just for one person alone, it would not be enough!

As Xin Yun was in a trance, on the dirt bed, hot tears filled Yi Luo Xiang’s eyes, no no… in reality, large tears were already fall from her face, but… she did not want Xin Yun to see. Forcefully suppressing the tears and not letting them flow, Xin Yun was already experiencing enough suffering. She did not want to add to it.
