The popularity that came out of nowhere was a great surprise for Yue Mei and Gu Feining’s team.

The variety show had yet to air but it had already gained popularity. Ever since Gu Feining accepted a role in the variety show, her popularity had been increasing. Those who had become her fans because of the CP gradually became true fans of her acting.

Yue Mei held the statistics for Gu Feining’s Weibo and showed it to her while saying that this was how it should’ve been in the first place. Furthermore, with the publicity from the variety show, she’d gotten more job offers, including invitations to act in dramas.

“Just think of this as a way of letting people get to know you. Yes, truthfully, many people didn’t know you at the start but after they’ve tried to understand you, they’ve been drawn to you. These are also fans that you’ve obtained with your own ability, why can’t you accept them?” Yue Mei said very logically, “If you’ve used others’ popularity but you can’t keep the fans who start to follow you out of curiosity, then I’ll meddle even if you don’t say anything.”

Yue Mei’s words held so much logic that Gu Feining was unable to refute them. However, only she knew the things she’d experienced in the past seemed to be repeating.

She was using Shi Xi’s popularity now, but in the future, Shi Xi would get a girlfriend. At that time, what was she supposed to do? Was she supposed to experience the same thing as the last time? Perhaps at that time, her heart would be stronger than before and she would be able to face it calmly?

But Shi Xi’s current influence was much greater than Yuan Jinyan’s back then.

If such a day came, what Gu Feining would need to bear might be several times the amount she had dealt with in the past.

Her career was finally developing quite well, why did she need to suffer like this again?

Although Gu Feining knew very well that Shi Xi was not the same kind of person as Yuan Jinyan, whether it was in terms of his morals or his popularity being much, much higher than the Yuan Jinyan of the past. However, no matter how good a person was, would he continue pretending to be in a CP with her for their whole lives?

Gu Feining felt helpless. Out there, the CP fans were happily enjoying the content as if they could not see the comments belittling her.

The ordinary fans were promoting Shi Xi’s new project and his new variety show seriously. They were also clarifying the truth of the scandal, telling people not to think too much as the two of them probably had a normal work relationship. They even asked everyone to focus on the work itself, saying ‘Miss Gu Feining is a brilliant senior, and being able to work together with this pretty lady is Shi Xi’s honor’.

These kinds of fans were much cuter, and there were quite a lot of them. It was probably because the fans’ behavior followed that of their idol. Both the fans and the idol were good people, making it easy for people to like them.

Actually, the CP fans were also very cute. The only reason Gu Feining was unwilling to face them was because of her trauma.

When she thought about the enthusiastic fans who tried to find sweet moments between the two people who had never worked together before, she found them quite adorable.

There were normal fans, but there were also anti-fans.

Both Shi Xi’s and Gu Feining’s names were trending. Under the trending tag, there was a certain Weibo post that had a lot of likes. It said: [Gu Feining is indeed the favored child of Le Cheng. Shi Xi is so popular, and he had no scandals before he switched companies. As soon as he joined Le Cheng, he was forcefully tied together with Le Cheng’s favored daughter in a scandal. Tch, why doesn’t she look at her status? She’s forcefully sticking to him, we must make her remember this lesson and scold her for a few years.]

Gu Feining was speechless. President Le and his wife treated her quite well but they were very fair in terms of distributing the resources in the company. Moreover, Le Cheng’s top female celebrity wasn’t her. They could not say that she was a favored daughter.

Below that post, some people were giving short summaries about the last time Gu Feining got scolded. The writing was very biased. They said after she used Yuan Jinyan to gain popularity, she was slapped in the face and proven wrong. Yuan Jinyan and his girlfriend had experienced continuous success, whereas she did not do well afterward, this was her retribution.

This matter was exactly what tormented Gu Feining the most. To her, what happened in the past did not hurt her so much that she was unable to heal from it. After Yuan Jinyan and Mi Ke got together, the matter between her and Shi Xi distracted her for a while. When she returned to her senses and got over it, all that left were terrible comments from fans. She did not feel very upset because of her heartbreak, but it was because of these negative comments that she was under great pressure and could not sleep well.

Cyberbullying was often far more than anyone could bear.

Furthermore, this matter had been brought up again, it was like she was being slapped again and again as they constantly mocked her for her past stupidity.

So despite how illogical it was, she still cared about this matter very much.

In addition to the mocking from the anti-fans on Weibo, her private messages were full of people dissing her. They were saying all kinds of things like she was shameless, and this was a publicity stunt. They also said she was forcefully sticking to Shi Xi, and many were saying extremely ugly words.

Because of these private messages, Gu Feining was in a bad mood. It was not that she couldn’t deal with stress, just that this matter was always a hit where it hurt the most.

She was insistent on suppressing this wave of popularity, but Yue Mei refused. Shi Xi’s team had yet to do anything. If her team tried to suppress this piece of news, besides making people feel like there was truly something going on, it could also make people think she was making a mountain out of a molehill. Furthermore, this work was cooperation between three parties. The people who should feel the least happy about this matter were Shi Xi and the production team because Gu Feining had snatched up the popularity before their pre-determined female lead had yet to make an appearance.

They could manipulate public opinion, but most of the time, it was hard to understand what the public thought.

The production team had expected Shi Xi and Gu Feining would make a popular pair, but they didn’t know it was to the extent that all they needed to do was to casually release a photo of them and the two of them would start trending. The program had yet to air and it already had this sort of sky-high popularity. Of course, the production team would not let this go. The publicity team probably wanted them to say they were in a relationship now.

Gu Feining had been unable to get proper sleep these days. She finally couldn’t stand it anymore and gave Shi Xi a call in the middle of the night.

Shi Xi’s phone was picked up by his assistant. They apologetically said that Shi Xi was busy in his studio, and he did not pick up calls while he was working.

As soon as her call went through, Gu Feining regretted it. What was she doing looking for Shi Xi? This wasn’t something he could control. It was something that the fans had made up themselves.

The assistant asked her if she wanted to ask Shi Xi to return her call after he was done working.

Gu Feining hurriedly replied that as this was not a major matter, there was no need to tell him, and she would contact Shi Xi again later.

After she hung up, she kept feeling like her call was redundant. She felt like she had exposed too many things in front of Shi Xi.

But after she mulled on it some more, she felt it was alright. She would pass her Weibo to Xiao Mang tomorrow. She was going to enter the film set soon, it was better for her not to see or know such things. Anyway, she wouldn’t care so much about what was happening outside once she got busy.

She kept trying to convince herself, and after much difficulty, she fell asleep. But in the middle of the night, she was woken up by a call again.

Gu Feining answered the call with a bleary ‘hello’? She was in such a daze that she was about to fall back to sleep.

“You called me just now?” The magnetic voice at the other end of the phone instantly made the sleepy Gu Feining wake up.

“You were sleeping?” Shi Xi looked at the time and realized it was already 2 am. “I’m sorry, I got a little excited so I forgot to look at the time.”

“What are you excited about?” Gu Feining sat up, completely awake.

“Do you want to see it?” Shi Xi’s voice sounded quite happy.

Gu Feining gave a confused ‘mmhm’ sound, and he hung up on the call. After that, a WeChat video call notification appeared.

She was a little stunned. The last time they were recording the program, everyone added each other on WeChat. They had been pulled into a group by the director and after the first filming session ended, everyone was busy with their schedules so that group had became quiet for the time being. This included Shi Xi and herself, although they hadn’t actually contacted each other in private before.

Gu Feining looked at the video call invitation that Shi Xi sent her, hesitating a bit. She was a female celebrity who cared about how she was perceived by her audience. Her current appearance was not suitable for a video call with someone else.

But her vibrating phone seemed to be rushing her to press on the ‘accept’ button.

Anyway… hadn’t Shi Xi already seen the many different sides of her before?

When she thought of it that way, Gu Feining accepted the video call, giving up on caring about her appearance.

After she accepted the call, she realized that she had worried over nothing. Her lights were not switched on and it was almost pitch black. Shi Xi wouldn’t be able to see anything.

The lighting on Shi Xi’s side was also very dim. It was a warm orange color, making him look much gentler. Shi Xi didn’t face the camera, instead, he was holding his guitar, sitting in front of the camera, and fiddling with it. When he saw the video call had been accepted, he moved forward slightly and adjusted the guitar a little before he made a signal with his hand and smiled at the camera.

The current Shi Xi truly seemed too gentle. He was wearing a simple T-shirt and jeans, sitting on a high stool, one leg on the chair, the other leg stretched out straight. His leg was so long that it was almost out of the frame.

Shi Xi didn’t seem like he was wearing makeup either. He was wearing glasses, the hair on his forehead clipped up. Besides his natural handsomeness, he truly was very young and seemed to be full of vitality.

The two of them didn’t interact anymore before Shi Xi started to play his guitar. He played his guitar as he hummed along. There were no lyrics, but the music sounded very nice.

To be honest, Gu Feining didn’t have a good impression of the young generation of male celebrities. They enjoyed the love of the public and using their popularity, they could easily reach a position that others couldn’t even if they gave it their best shot. And they were unwilling to improve themselves.

All those prejudices had been overthrown when it came to Shi Xi. At that moment, although Shi Xi didn’t have his usual glamorous appearance, he was glowing. The image of him playing the guitar made him look like a male god from school, holding the guitar and standing below the dorm, playing his favorite song to the girl he was chasing.

Crap! She felt that this kind of Shi Xi was even more handsome.

Gu Feining suddenly felt the sound of her heart pounding was almost louder than the music coming from the phone. She pressed on her chest and sighed. Shi Xi was such a menace to society. Didn’t he know that when he looked like that, girls could not resist him?

Shi Xi was focused on playing the guitar. After he was done, he happily turned the camera around to face the piano in his studio and played another part with the piano. And after he was done with this part too, he picked up the guitar again and said a lot of professional terms to her, talking as he gave her a demonstration. Gu Feining didn’t understand what Shi Xi was saying, but she could feel Shi Xi’s enthusiasm for music and the emotions in the music he had played..

Shi Xi played around with the guitar for a very long time before he stopped. Only then did he realize an hour had passed and his expression became one of embarrassment as he apologized to Gu Feining.

In the past, she felt that Shi Xi was too mature for his age, but now, he was finally acting in a manner that befitted of a youth. He looked quite cute when he was eager to share something he liked with the others.

“This is a song for the musical. I made some changes, this is the part expressing love so I added some sweetness to it.” While Shi Xi was talking about music, his eyes were shining. “I’ve been feeling good recently so I did a little more. What do you think?”

Gu Feining nodded her head. She felt it too. Music was really a magical thing. Through the phone screen, he didn’t need to say anything, but she could feel the warmth.

“What do you think?” Because the lighting at Gu Feining’s side was way too dim, Shi Xi couldn’t see her nod and asked again.

“It’s quite good.” What Gu Feining said was the truth. She did think it sounded good and this was the highest evaluation she could give.

“Then… did this move you?” Shi Xi leaned against the piano, his long and slender fingers pressing down on a key. It made a long drone, distracting her in the quiet night.

“Wha-what?” Gu Feining’s heart skipped a beat. Did this person always have to… speak so flirtatiously?

“After you’ve listened to my music, are you tempted to accept the role of the female lead in the musical?” Shi Xi asked very directly but Gu Feining was not at all composed.

Gu Feining was very glad that the light in her room was not switched on. Otherwise, he would definitely be able to see her bright red face.

“I… have never acted in a musical before, and my singing…”

Shi Xi interrupted her, wearing a serious expression, “I’ve heard you sing before, your voice is okay.”

“When did you hear me sing?” Gu Feining rarely sang. Most of the time, she would only hum in private.

Shi Xi smiled again. “Are you sure you want me to say?”

Gu Feining hurriedly rejected him, “It’s fine, there’s no need to tell me. I know.”

Shi Xi smiled ambiguously. No matter how dumb she was, she was able to guess what he was referring to. She had truly done many things that time she got drunk.

Putting aside his joking expression, Shi Xi said very seriously, “My studio has moved to the company. If you make a trip to the company one day, you can come to my studio. I’ll take you into the recording studio to experience the real thing.”

Gu Feining didn’t know why she was unable to reject Shi Xi. “I… I don’t have experience in that area.”

“Did you have experience when you filmed your first show? Could it be that you are not as good as you were when you were fifteen?” Shi Xi stared at Gu Feining through the screen. “Actually, if you want to refuse this role, you can be more direct. But since you keep finding excuses to make me give up on you first, that means you actually want to try it in your heart.”

Shi Xi’s words stabbed Gu Feining. If another person had invited her, she might hesitate, but if the other party insisted as much as Shi Xi did, she would definitely compromise.

She was actually quite interested in the challenge. It was just that the other person was Shi Xi, it was clear that he had the ability to easily affect her and this was enough to scare her into retreating.

Shi Xi suddenly moved closer to the phone, as if wanting to peer at the expression Gu Feining was making in the dark. “Are you that scared of getting involved with me?”

Gu Feining wanted to deny it, but she always had the feeling that Shi Xi could see right through her and just gave up on responding.

Shi Xi stared at Gu Feining wordlessly. Just when Gu Feining thought that he would not say anything else, he said, “I’m not Yuan Jinyan, I won’t abandon you nor stab you in the back and pull you out a few years later to be another stepping stone.”

Every single one of Shi Xi’s words stabbed her heart, and what he said was indeed true.

Gu Feining thought to herself that if she had nothing to do with Shi Xi, Yuan Jinyan wouldn’t use her as a stepping stone. However, this did not have anything to do with Shi Xi. In fact, it was Shi Xi who was being implicated by her.

Seeing that Gu Feining was not saying anything, Shi Xi suddenly asked her, “Do you remember what you said a few years ago?”

“What did I say?” Gu Feining instantly became alert.

How many things had she said that night a few years ago? Why was Shi Xi able to remember what happened a few years ago so clearly? Did he write a memo?

Shi Xi smiled at the camera. “You said that you want to become more popular than Yuan Jinyan.”

Gu Feining had definitely said those words before because she still had that thought.

Shi Xi’s expression changed. “You said that if you couldn’t become more popular than Yuan Jinyan, you wanted to find someone more popular than him.”

Gu Feining had no memory of that at all. “Did I… really say that?”

“So… what do you think about me?”
