Stall Market (2)

Just then, a stocky and imposing female cultivator came in, carrying a huge package. She heaved it onto the counter. "Xiao Sa, come and take stock."

The shop assistant named Xiao Sa said goodbye to Zheng Wan and hurriedly went to take stock of the goods. One after another, exquisite magical artefacts and Yuan artefacts were taken out of the package. After taking stock of everything and counting out the Yuan stones, the female cultivator left with the same great strides as when she came in. Xiao Sa realised that the customer from before was still around.

What a strange person.

He saw Zheng Wan ask in a lowered voice, "Is that senior a Tianzun Sect... artefact cultivator?"

"Yes,” Xiao Sa nodded. He was accustomed to expressions like hers. Those who walked the path of cultivation had their bodies tempered by their innate Qi and infused with vital Qi; most of them had slender figures, and rarely had such exaggerated muscles.

"Every step of the creation of artefacts entails severe tempering and hammering. Over time, most of our cultivators will become... tall and sturdy."

Zheng Wan let out an "Oh", and thought inwardly that she would never learn the arts of artefact cultivation. Perhaps it was for this reason that there was not even a mention of artefact cultivation in the Non-Emptiness Sutra.

People of the Yuqing Sect took being “not beautiful” as a cause for shame.

To refine elixirs, one had to start a fire to heat the cauldron, then tend to it, and the cauldron would even blow up from time to time, making one covered in dust and ash from head to toe. As someone who loved beauty and cleanliness, naturally, Zheng Wan would not consider that option.

As for casting formations—

The thought of the messy lines, and the formation cultivators who could not avoid premature balding caused by the complicated calculations despite devoting themselves to various hair-transplant techniques, Zheng Wan also rejected it.

It was better to stick to drawing talismans. With a talisman brush and a stack of paper, one could practise anytime and anywhere— it sounded much more convenient.

"Do you have talisman brushes and talisman paper?"

"Yes, yes, yes."

The shop assistant diligently took out three stacks of talisman paper and about a dozen talisman brushes. Five or six of them were packed in special boxes, and it was clear with one glance that they cost a lot of money.

"Do you want yellow paper, Luoxuan paper, or Yongyu paper?"

"The most common one will do."

Zheng Wan pursed her lips. Her eyelashes trembled violently, she murmured, "I-I... don't have much Yuan stones.”

The shop assistant's heart also trembled, and his voice softened quite a lot, "If you want to buy talisman paper that’s cheaper, you’ll have to go to the stall market. The things in the Seven Treasures Court... are not exactly affordable."

...Darn it.

The shop assistant didn’t know why he made such a statement, as if he had been controlled. He only prayed that the manager on the second floor did not notice.

"Stall market?" Zheng Wan pressed, "What is that? May I ask what the prices are like in the Seven Treasures Court, and what they’re like at the stall market?”

If the difference was only a few Yuan beads, she would still be willing to buy it from a big store, at least, the prices would be fair and honest.

"Yellow paper costs five hundred Yuan beads a ream at the Seven Treasures Court, and there are a hundred sheets a ream. The lowest-grade talisman brush would also cost fifty low-grade Yuan stones." The shop assistant looked at the female cultivator's dusty mortal robes, with not even a dust removal formation on it—

It was clear that she was in dire straits.

Zheng Wan was in dire straits. She had thought that twelve Yuan stones were a lot, but it turned out that it was only enough to buy one hair of a talisman brush.

The shop assistant felt so much sympathy for her that he even forgot about the manager and told the female cultivator who looked like she was new to everything in a loud voice, "The stall market consists of independent stalls set up by cultivators. Fengwu City is close to the Guixu Sect, and Guixu Sect’s sword cultivators love to adventure. If they sell the things they obtain during their adventures to shops, they might lose out, so they’d set up their own stalls. Over time, as more people gathered, including many cultivators with special expertise, the area slowly became a stall market.

"It's just that the stall market is a place where the good and bad are mixed together, so it’s a test of one’s eye. There are black-hearted vendors who would sell fish eyes as pearls. However, no one will be interested in making imitations of things like talisman paper, so you can go there with no worries. The prices at the stall market are generally lower than those in shops...”

Zheng Wan was lost in thought.

In the adventure novels of the Heavenly Realms, every protagonist that came out on top in the end all had one thing in common: finding an overlooked gem.

This overlooked gem would either be a divine artefact or an arcane artefact, and would also become the turning point for the protagonist to soar.

Zheng Wan was tempted.

She decided to go take a look. Who knows, she might just... find an overlooked gem.

"Many thanks."

She smiled kindly at the shop assistant, and in his dizzy sight, left the Seven Treasures Court without buying anything.

The shop assistant’s miserable cry of  "Manager, please forgive me, I won’t dare to do this again” came from behind her, but Zheng Wan ignored it. Following the living map, she walked for almost fifteen minutes before reaching the stall market. When she got there, she had to hand over one Yuan bead before being let in.

Once inside, she found that the so-called market was just a square. The huge square was divided into grids like a chessboard, and in each grid sat a stall owner. Most of them had a piece of cloth, on which were placed items for sale or trade.
