Second Alarm-12

Carefully picking the little child up, I turned my head towards a direction in the forest. We were currently still in the meadows, but I had started to feel a certain gaze on me a few minutes ago during the fight.

“Stalking isn’t praisable behaviour. Even if it's from the oh-so illustrious Michael.”

Honestly? They were quite good. As expected from Division Michael. I hadn't felt their presence until I lessened my focus on that monster back then as we fought. But, they were just watching? Why? There shouldn’t have been any problems with assisting me considering the total firepower the Division had. Why……

As I found myself going deeper into my thoughts, a figure stepped out from the foliage of trees and bushes, and into the meadow. A medium-built figure, probably an adult man, covered head-to-toe with sophisticated grey-black combat armour emerged. That was an expected sight. What I didn't expect, however, was the golden emblem of the Cordiale, branded on the right side of the man’s chest. That made me do a double-take.

“The captain?”

The figure raised his hand.

“No, sir. Vice-captain. I'm afraid Division Michael was re-routed. I'm simply here to provide assistance and keep you updated on the current situation. Although……”

The vice-captain turned their head towards the charred remains of the monster.

“Apologies, but I had thought it would have been better to observe the situation rather than needlessly interrupt. From the fight, it seemed as though any intervention would only have a negative effect.”

His first words made me do another double-take. Re-routed? But why?

The vice-captain seemed to have noticed my internal turmoil, before hurriedly following:

“Per the Visionary’s orders sir. A major emergency had occurred.”

“Enough to override this?”

Still holding the child with both hands near my chest, I tilted my head towards the Crack behind me to make my point.

“Yes.”

Not an ounce of hesitation.

“Well, do enlighten me. What could have possibly gotten our dear old man up his toes to ignore this?”

The Vice-captain seemed to hesitate for a split second, before filling in.

“A major breach has occurred within the first Crack. I don't know the full situation, but it seems several monsters have emerged from the Crack and began indiscriminately killing everyone on-site. Uriel’s security forces had been overrun, alongside the other operatives tasked with guarding the site. The Visionary called us in whilst we were mobilising, and sent us there. I was ordered to find and retrieve you from the second Crack.”

The man paused for a moment. Good thing, because I wasn't really in the right mind now. Not after hearing his words.

A what?

Monsters? These things were- oh man. I thought I had roughly accepted the fact that these things came from the Cracks themselves, but confirming it from the Vice-captain themselves really- I- I-

Shit.

Pushing back my current thoughts, I motioned for him to continue. First I had to hear the whole story.

“Go on.”

“From the reports, it seems a complete cave-in has occurred. From last I've heard, the entire site is currently buried, inaccessible. Division Michael was sent to commence a search-and-destroy mission for whatever still remained underground, as well as to salvage the equipment and retrieve survivors, if any.”

Another double-take. That bad? Shit, but then again, I guess ordinary Origins really would have a hard time against this.

I looked towards the charred remains of the monster I had just killed.

It was fast, trained, and possessed a degree of intellect. It was dangerous. Just one swing could probably blow off the torso of an adult man, Origin or not.

Trying to compose my thoughts, I looked back up towards the man still standing there.

“Alright, so the old man sent you here. What's the plan, Vice-captain?”

The man took out a small, circular device from one of his uniform’s pouches. I knew what that was. A portable teleporter. He added:

“Don't worry about this Crack. Central has sent out several dozen combat operatives to this location. Elites, as they said. They should be arriving within a few hours. Although still a risk, we’ve deemed it acceptable. We need you on the field and office to handle things out. Also……”

The man looked at the child currently held within my arms. Quickly, I cut in:

“I'll take temporary custody of this child. We’ll find her home and bring her back, no problem.”

The man seemed to deliberate over my words. It looked as though he wanted to say something, but didn’t know if it was appropriate to an Overseer. Especially one that led the Inquisitors.

“Understood. We'll transport immediately to the site.”

I walked over closer to the man, as he began fiddling with the device. A second later, the device began glowing a brilliant blue light, which instantly engulfed both my vision and our figures.

A moment later, we were gone from the scene.

-

???

After Iv and the Vice-captain were long gone, the figure of a young boy, hidden within the surrounding bushes, crawled out and emerged into the now-silent meadows.
