Chapter 75: Probing in All Four Directions

On the same day, after Feng Xue took Sang Ziyan away, Liyou and Anui began to inspect Yuling Pass, from the frontier garrison guards to the common people. Liyou spent a day observing and thinking, but felt that this war was really not a good thing. Not only was it a waste of manpower and resources, it would leave many families destitute and homeless. The pain caused by war was not only the pain of one generation, but that sorrow would last for three generations. There were many people in the frontier who had lost their relatives, fathers who had lost their daughters, husbands who had lost their wives, children who had lost their mothers and some other tragic instances. There were even some young and vigorous men who entered the fray and after this abnormal war, only countless orphans would be left behind.”

:Anhui, if the Anbu Black Ops needs personnel, choose from these orphans first.” During war, these orphans were often the most innocent victims. They had been left unattended because their parents died and many would die by starvation or freeze to death. Many lives have disappeared before they could even understand what life is.

“Understood, Your Majesty, do you need this subordinate to take in more orphans for training?”With the Anbu Black Ops’ current strength, it would not be difficult to take in all these orphans.

“Do your best, but don’t treat them differently just because they are orphans. Do not hurt people because of good intentions, they do not need our sympathy.” Liyou’s tone seemed a little indifferent, but the meaning behind her words was very pragmatic. No reason could be justification for depravity and many people were successful due to their own efforts, not due to the sympathy of others.

Anhui nodded. He understood these reasons, because he had come here based on his own efforts and the sympathy of others only made him feel more embarrassed and it would not help his life in any way.

The two went out on an inspection tour wearing ordinary attire and also donned veils. Even so, in the Yuling Pass, which seemed a bit desolate in the chaos of war, these two still attracted the attention of others. However, the Yuling Pass was heavily guarded. Although there were people walking on the streets, they were all soft-spoken and cautious. Even if LIyou and Anhui attracted some people’s attention, no one would do something that shouldn’t be done at such a time.

However the fact that people didn’t want to cause trouble did not mean that the city in war did not have any problems at all. Liyou and Anhui were walking to a refugee camp when they saw that a fight broke out among the refugees. No, rather, it was  not accurate to say they were fighting. To be precise, they were beating someone. Three women were beating a man and in that man’s embrace was a child. The man curled up on the ground and protected the child in his arms. Three woman beat and cursed.

“Fuck, someone who sells themselves is also worthy to fight over food with us? You should scram with your bastard child, you lowly wench…” One of the women cursed at the man lying on the ground and these rude words were really uncomfortable to listen to.”

And when Liyou and Anhui heard this sentence, Anhui frowned but Liyou stood there with an expressionless face. There were many watching the scene among them so Liyou and Anui did not attract too many people’s attention.

“A prostitute and their bastard, just living is a waste of food. It is better to die, they are awfully filthy anyways.” Another woman agreed, her expression looking extremely contemptuous. “Hmph, it’s such a pity to die, it should serve us well while it’s still alive. This man looks to have quite a good appearance and has eaten our food for so long, would it not be a pity to not use it well?” The last woman harshly added, a wicked smile appearing on her face as she reached out to the man’s clothes, pulling to tear them off.

Some men looked away embarrassedly, some women left bored, but there were more people watching, clamoring and jeering.

Although Anhui was frowning, he didn’t reach much. He just retracted his gaze and looked at Liyou. He was not sure of the Empress’ thoughts and was waiting for her orders.

But Liyou was also thinking in her heart, she did not want to sympathize with the weak and while this man was obviously the one being bullied, she did not feel sympathy for him. Instead, she felt that this man was worthy of respect, because he had tenacity and his hands tightly protected not only the child in his arms, but also that small piece of steamed bun in the child’s hand. It was his desire to live and the courage to sacrifice everything for the people he cared about, but she just did not know how long he could last. The man’s clothes were torn to shreds and his body was covered with scars. From these marks, it seemed this was not the first time this man had been treated as such.

The war caused many people to lose their homes. Despite the protection provided by the city walls, slings would still throw rocks with fire over the walls. Many houses were destroyed and many people lost their homes. Jiang Hanyang then gathered all these refugees here and took care of their food, clothing, housing and transportation. But, food was not abundant during times of war and the refugees only ate enough so they would not starve to death. One more mouth to feed was one bite of food less for someone else, so naturally they would be somewhat hostile to the existence of others, especially an existence like this man, a lowly male prostitute. Not to mention during times of war, even in normal times, they would only be discriminated against and bullied by others.

The man was still clutching the child in his arms tightly, but the despair in his eyes became more and more obvious. Finally when someone wanted to forcibly take away his child, he sorrowfully said: “Let me set the child down and I will do as you wish.”

The trio laughed wickedly and one of them said, “It would have been better to be obedient from the beginning. Everytime, we have to waste a little bit of time. Huh, if you want to survive, be smart and take your bastard child and scram!”

The man got up with some difficulty and let the women insult him without any sort of reaction. He just wrapped the child with a rag in the temple behind and walked back quietly.

The scattered and fragmentary scraps of clothing left on the man’s body had basically but all fallen off. When he stood in front of the crowd, those three women quickly and effortlessly stripped him down!

In broad daylight, there was no cover and any scruples. The man seemed to have become accustomed to this kind of treatment, merely closing his eyes and being unresponsive, like a piece of wood, as he let these people do what they wanted.

Liyou watched coldly from the side, never stopping them, never getting angry. One couldn’t detect what she was thinking or what she would do next.

Anhui stood behind her, his head lowered slightly as he chose to ignore this difficult to look at situation. Although he did not know what the Empress was thinking, the Empress did not stop this very vulgar behavior from occurring in front of her. But, he felt that the Empress should not be so unresponsive to this kind of matter.

After about seven or eight women later, no one else came up. After all, in this type of environment, not everyone could do such a deed. The man lying on the ground slowly opened his eyes and after seeing no one else was coming up, a weak smile appeared. He struggled to sit up and then walked towards the place where he had set down the child. The people he walked by on the road, both men and women, avoided him immediately, as if he was the plague, as if he was so dirty that he was unbearable to look at.

The man was clearly aware of all these sentiments but he continued to walk towards his child without any reaction. A group of seven- or -eight-year-old children threw stones at him playfully, saying, “Bad man, you don’t even wear clothes. Bad guy, hit him, hit him.”

It was painful to be hit by stones and he frowned every time he was hit, but he did not make any extra moves or glance at the group of children. Acting so indifferently as if it was not him being hit.

He walked towards his child step by step, with a staggering pace, as if he was filled with indescribable pain. Yet, no sound was made. His child seemed to be asleep, even the big movements just now did not affect the child. The child was unconsciously holding a steamed bun in its hand, but the steamed bun seemed to have touched the ground and some small stones were sticking to it.

The man walked over and picked up the child, leaning to sit against the wall. He seemed to have disturbed a wound somewhere during this action. He frowned in pain but he still did not cry out in pain. Instead, he gently patted the child in his arms, revealing that weak simple again, saying to the child, “Be good, sleep a bit more. Daddy will clean up the steamed bun and you can eat it once you wake up.”

While talking the man took the steamed bun from the child’s hand but the child seemed to be concerned about the steamed bun. Even in their sleep, they held the bun tightly and would not let go. The man exerted some effort to get it out and then carefully brushed away the pebbles on it. He blew on it a few times and placed the steamed buns in the child’s hands again, leaning against the wall behind him and closing his eyes, looking exhausted.

As for this man’s behavior, everyone no longer watched the ruckus just now. After what happened, everyone seemed to have returned to their usual numb routine. They all sat there quietly, doing their own things. No one cared about this man’s situation.

Liyou was still standing there quietly and Anhui, seeing her unmoving, had to stay by her side.

After about thirty minutes, the child woke up. It was a three-year-old child. Although he was not very sensible, he understood a little. He opened his eyes and shouted that he was hungry. The man immediately pointed to the steamed bun in the child’s hand and said: “Little fool, you are holding the steamed bun yet still screaming hungry. Well, eat quickly, you won’t be hungry after eating.”

The man’s voice was very gentle, unbelievably gentle, like a loving father’s tenderest love for his children.

‘Daddy, you eat too, eat steamed buns.” The child in the man’s arms smiled and his smiling face was extraordinarily cute. He raised the steamed bun in his hands and sensibly brought it out to the man’s mouth, wanting his father to eat first…..
