Chapter 76: The Desolate Man

When the man heard the child’s words, it seemed as if he had the urge to cry. Although Liyou was located very far away, she could still make out the man’s emotionally moved expression. She only saw that the man’s eyes reddened and once he calmed down, he gently said, “You eat, once my little treasure is full, daddy will eat.”

Pitying the hearts of parents all over the world, such a saying came to mind at this time. There were too many injustices in this world, when this man encountered such a thing, it made people feel mournful and lamentable. But, there were more miserable existences in the world. At least this man’s child was still alive, this was already very fortunate compared to other unfortunate people. It was not that Anhui was without compassion, he just understood that no amount of pity would do anything if it was all just empty talk.

It was just that, looking at the scene of the man interacting with his child, Anhui thought of a question he had never dared to think about. There is no one who did not expect to have a child with the person he loved and naturally he was the same. But would the Empress want him to have a child with her?

“Daddy doesn’t eat, then I won’t eat either.” The child seemed to be unusually smart and sensible and even shook his little head, trying his best to lift the steamed bun in front of the man.

The man seemed to be no stranger to such a scene and did not insist on refusing. He smiled and took a small bite of the steamed bun. He then said to the child: “Alright, let’s eat together. Daddy will eat and then baby will eat too.”

After watching the man’s actions and listening to the man’s words, the baby seemed to understand the meaning and revealed a big smile. When the man put the steamed bun to his lips, the child happily took a bite, eating it very sweetly.

Liyou moved, she walked towards the man and then squatted down in front of him, asking strangely, “If I could give you a wish, what would you want the most?”

Some people did not wish for many things while some wanted a lot. Some people had nothing and would only have a few things they wanted. She had been thinking just now, if she could grant this man a wish, what would this man want?

As for Liyou’s appearance, the man did not react in surprise, just raising his head dully. He first glanced at Liyou and then glanced at Anhui. Regarding Liyou’s question, the man reacted somewhat, but he frowned, as if he was unwilling to answer.

The man did not speak and Liyou was not in a hurry. Still looking at him face to face, the two seemed to be comparing whose focus was better.

In the end, the man seemed to be unable to hold on any longer and slowly asked, “You have nothing to do with me. Why do I need to tell you my wish? If I do say it or if I don’t say it, don’t tell me you will help me realize it?”

He had not been surprised at the appearance of these two people because he had long noticed them. It could be conjectured that it was just not him who noticed, but also the people around him. After all, there were only refugees in this refugee camp. No matter how low-key the two of them tried to be, looking at their garments and bearings, they were not refugees. Normally, some people would definitely have gone up to ask,but now, no one could protect themselves. It was better to have one less thing to worry about. No one wanted to cause any trouble so he pretended he hadn’t seen them. Even under such unbearable circumstances, he had still taken notice of them. He had always felt like he had been very accurate in seeing through people and these people should not be locals. But, he did not know why these two people appeared in front of him to ask such a question, just what was their intention?”

“Mayhaps.” Since he had aroused her interest, Liyou did not mind doing something for her own interest, such as fulfilling one of his wishes.

An intimidating brilliance flashed in the man’s eyes, but it quickly extinguished. He shook his head, feeling that at such an age, how could he still believe there would be anything good with a pie that fell out of the sky? It was simple naivety. No wonder he had been deceived and reduced to such a level.

“What do you want me to do?” The man directly asked. Although he asked, he could not think of anything that he had that was of value. He was so impoverished that he didn’t even have a single piece of clothing left. The last piece of clothing had been torn to pieces by the people just now. Now, he was left with this piece of a rag that was originally used to spread on the ground. What else could he have that would be of use to others?”

“What else do you think you can do?” Everyone had their own value, but many people didn’t recognize their own value. But to think too much of yourself, it was just that one did not have the confidence to look down on yourself.

The man was stumped. What else could he do? In the way he was right now, he could not even guarantee the food and clothing of his child, what else could he do….unable to think of an answer, the man smiled helplessly and once again looked at the strange woman in front of him, “As you can see, I cannot do anything, so why do you look for me? After watching the fun, wasn’t it enough?”

“Maybe I am also interested in your body?” Liyou’s words were of course a joke and only said it after feeling this man was interesting and wanted to probe him. This man looked to be in his early twenties and his appearance was considered to be above average, except for his occupation. It was normal for ordinary people to take a liking to him, but everyone present knew that Liyou’s words were just a joke.

The man showed an extremely sarcastic smile, but the object of such sarcasm was not Liyou, but himself, “The young man besides this lady is a hundred times better than me. Why would you tell such a joke and humiliate yourself.” Even commoners found people like him dirty, just looking at her, she did not seem to be a commoner lady, how could she want him?

“That is true. I see that your child is not bad, sell him to me. Ask any price, I will pay.” Although she did not like the self-deprecating connotation in the man’s words, but as for the compliments in the man’s remarks, she glanced at Anhui with satisfaction. The eyes of the two met in the air and Anhui lowered his head in embarrassment.

The man’s eyes suddenly widened a lot and the arms holding the child tightened. His calm face became solemn, “Although I am poor, I will never sell my child. If you have this kind of thinking, please leave immediately and do not waste any more time.”

It turned out to be this way. No wonder such a person would find him, it was for the sake of his child. Even if he died, he would never sell his child! Never!

“There are many children and I don’t have to have yours. But, do you wish your children to live a good life? Following me, at least it won’t go hungry.” Liyou used another approach.

The man was silent. The words of refusal lay at the tip of his tongue, but he could not say them. Thinking of the experiences these past days, he could not help worrying about his child’s future. He could live without three meals a day, but the child was still so young and before there was no other way but to let the child suffer with him. But, if someone was willing to give the child a different future, should he choose to let go? It was only….

“How can I believe your words?” The person in front of him was just a stranger, how could he send his child away at the drop of a hat just based off a stranger’s words?

“It is up to you whether you believe it or not. I do not need to make you believe me.” Liyou replied indifferently and that attitude of indifference was quite discouraging.

The man grew a little angry at Liyou’s attitude. He hugged the child in his arms tightly and furiously retorted, “Unless I can be sure that the child will have a good life, I will never sell my child.”

When he had heard this woman’s words just now, his heart had been shaken, but he would not trust anyone so easily anymore. He could not bet on his child’s future. He could not afford to lose.

“One thousand taels.” Liyou did not give up because of the opponent’s refusal and instead began to lure them. She felt that everyone had a bottom line. There was a saying that people were not loyal, but the stakes of betrayal were too low. She wanted to see how many chips this person had.

The man pursed his lips tightly and no matter how calm his expression was, he could not hide the surprise in his eyes. One thousand taels would allow him to live a lifetime without worrying about food and clothing…..

“Gold.” Liyou seemed to think that the bargaining chips were not enough so she continued to add the word ‘gold’ after one thousand taels! Humans had human nature, the so-called cares and desires. They would use their desires to measure the pros and cons in order to make the most beneficial choices for themselves, whether it was for their interests or their own emotional expectations.

“……Hehe, a thousand taels of gold, not to mention a child, in the chaos of war, it is possible to buy thousands of them. It would be a lie to say that I am not shaken, but I cannot agree. If in your heart, my child is worth so much money, to me as the father, he is worth much more……” Although he had a feeling that this woman would never hurt his child, he still did not want to agree. He was shaken just now, thinking that selling the child would give him a better life, but that was just an uncertain possibility. There were possibilities he could not bear and he would not gamble with the child’s future.

“Boring, Anhui, I think it is good for this person to be admitted to the Anbu Black ops.” This man was firm and intelligent, possessing a principled observation ability. The most important thing was that she thought this man was quite malleable and suitable for the organization.

She also had her kindness, but it depended on her mood. Although it was not very pleasant to see such a scene today, it was worthwhile to find someone quite interesting.

“Yes.” Anhui assented to orders. He just knew that the Empress would not stand by idly, but he personally also agreed that this man was very suitable for the Anbu Black Ops. He hoped the other would be able to start anew, and that child, he would also be very trainable.

Anbu what? The man looked hesitant and carefully gave it some thought. It seemed to be some sort of organization and he didn’t know what it did. But, no matter what he did, as long as he could raise his child, he would be willing. He had long lost his life’s dignity and didn’t mind losing his humanity, raising his child alive was his only hope now…..
