Chapter 23:

Come now, it is a good idea

Constantine:

“It will be a good idea,” Daniel tells me, as we go to the Manacom building. I had to search for it on my phone because Daniel told me it was a piece building. Those move a lot. It is so hard for them to find a permanent parking.

“You want me to just go in there, and ask for a job?” I ask. His idea is good on paper. They are searching for someone who can use the core of a planet as a mana source. Now, because of the imprinting, I can do it. Yet, it is still not sitting well with me, that I have to be so...brazen.

“They offered me the job, only after a single demonstration. All you need to do, is show them that you can make screens that show in the above dimensions, too. And then you get the job,” I sigh, and let him bring my hand to his lips. He kisses it gently, and nibbles on my thumb. I giggle at that, and reach out, so I can poke him on the nose.

“Go to horny jail,” I say. He chuckles.

“Will you come with me and drop the soap?” He asks. I blink at him.

“Wait, what?” I ask him. Just when are we going to have time to drop soaps, when we go in and out of jail?

“Sorry, it is just that, there is this joke, where prisoners get into relationships and hook-ups with each other, after they have accidents in the bathroom involving the dropping of soap,” Daniel tells me. I bite my lower lip.

“Compared to imprisonment, the preprogramming doesn’t sound so bad. Nor does the fee,” I say.

“Right, instead of imprisonment, you Ursulians brainwash your criminals back to being good citizens,” he says, showing just what he thinks about that, with that frown of his.

“It is not just the people in the Ursula solar system that do it. It is a common practice in the Cosmos. It has seen a decline of the crime rate for the past...centuries,” huh, has the system really been in place for centuries?

I thought that it has been in place for the past couple of millennia. Yet, now that I think about it, it was implemented in the year one million and forty.

“But, it hasn’t eradicated crime. Just look at what that emotion thief is doing,” Daniel reminds me, and I sigh.

“The emotion thief is superb at hiding, but he will be caught,” there is no doubt in my mind of that. No criminal has ever been left undiscovered in the Cosmos. Unlike on Earth, we have soul trackers in here, and surveillance, and... I stop and blink. Huh, we are really restrained, when I think about it.

“I bet he won’t be. Or she,” Daniel adds at the last second.

“I just wonder where he goes to hide, after he does the theft,” I say, but then I see the dome that marks Manacom. “We are here.”

We go in, and Daniel looks around.

“Last time, there was an elven guide,” he says. As if summoned, a dark-haired woman came down the ramp.

“Ah, Mr. Samkiel. And this is?” She asks, looking at me.

“My husband,” I blush at the way Daniel introduced me.

“We are not yet married, but we are imprinted,” I correct him.

“Wait, we are not married?” He turns to me. The guide giggles.

“I take it you didn’t have time to check some videos? Anyway, follow me,” she turns around, and we rush after her. The piece building moves five times, while we are walking. Still, we are soon before a white wooden door. The guide opens it, and walks in.

“Mr. Samkiel, and company,” she says, and then steps to the side, so we can go in.

“I can sense the mana in the Naga,” one elf says. I can see that he and the elf next to him, look like twins. Yet, they are dark elves. I bet that, if they smile, their fangs will show.

“Wonderful, you won’t have to work alone, Mr. Samkiel,” a pixie says. Daniel smiles, and then nods towards the pixie.

“Tine, this is Agafia, and the twins are Frederik and Ferenc, but I don’t know who is who. Still, one of them has a lighter shade of green as an eye color,” Daniel nods at the twins next, who smirk at him. Their eyes glow, and then I can’t see a difference between them.

“That is cheating,” Daniel protests. The right twin pokes out his tongue at him, and his fangs do show. “Anyway, this is Nahndor, and the pretty lady is Rhea.”

The Naga with the red tail blushes, and fans herself with her paper fan. I lean over, so I can whisper in Daniel’s ear.

“While Naga love compliments, to give them means that you are interested in them,” I whisper.

“But Rhea is interesting,” Daniel protests. “She is a Naga.”

I am reminded, once again, that to Daniel this is a whole new world. Everything must be interesting to him. The only female Naga begins to fan herself even harder. Ah, so she has heightened senses?

“Interested romantically. I don’t share, Daniel,” I whisper to him. He smiles bashfully, and coughs in his hand.

“Sorry,” he murmurs, and I straighten up again.

“Now, that the introductions are done with, I think I can begin to tell you a little about the work you will be doing,” Agafia, the pixie, says. She takes a remote, and a screen slides down on the wall. “So, as you know, the Dimension Theory has been proven right recently.”

I blink at that.

“You searched for someone, without the theory being proven?” I ask. The pixie scratches the back of her head.

“We are dreamers, Mr...” She lets her voice trail off. I am quick to fill in the gap.

“Angelid,” I say, and Daniel sends me a strange look.

“Your parents really liked reading about the Roman Empire, didn’t they?” He asks. I nod. I wonder why he waited so long to comment on that. Did he want for us to grow closer first?

“My mother was a historian, specializing on exotic planets. You can’t get any more exotic than Earth, when you go from Ursula 590,” I tell him.

“Well, Mr. Angelid. Nothing personal, but you must prove to us, that Mr. Samkiel’s abilities have fully been absorbed by you,” Nahndor says, and pulls out a mirror from a suitcase.

I take it, focus, and a screen of light appears. Instead of the barren wasteland that I expect to see, going from Daniel’s description of what he saw, I see a moving cloud of dust, with a shadowy shape inside of it.
