Chapter 24:

Didn’t you say there is no life there?

Constantine:

“Oh, what is this?” Agafia exclaims. The landscape below the dust ball, with its shadow encased within, is that of jutting minerals reaching towards the sky. That aligns with what Daniel saw. But not this shape.

“I thought nothing could live beyond Dimension Alpha,” Nahndor says. The figure in the dust turns his head to me, I can see that it is a he because he doesn’t have breasts. I stop feeding the mirror mana.

“It saw through the connection,” Nahndor looks at me for a while, and then reaches out. I place the mirror in his hand. “If there are inhabitants in the dimensions above Dimension Alpha, then we will need to be diplomatic.”

“Or, we will be reprogrammed,” everyone, bar Daniel, shuddered at the thought. I can see that he wants to ask what the big deal is, but he holds his tongue.

“So, instead of sending the mining equipment in there first, we will need to send diplomats,” Daniel asks after a while.

“It will be the best move. That said, you will have to open up a portal first. We will have to make sure you understand the science and magical theory behind teleports, first. That is why we insisted that you imprinted on your friend. Forty years are simply not enough time, for you to understand,” Agafia says. Daniel’s eyes widen.

“I am not good on the technical stuff,” I can see that he thinks he is way over his head. I take a hold of his hand, and give it a little squeeze.

“The only thing you will need to know how to do, is to figure out how to get a teleportation capsule to work between dimensions. You won’t be made to build one from scratch, right?” I look at the Manacom members.

“Precisely. It will take him about 100 years, to get a proper feel for the mana resonance of Ursula 590, and maybe another 100, to get a feel on the resonance of the dimension above our own,” Agafia says. “When can you start?”

I look to Daniel, who grins brightly.

“Today,” he says. Agafia beams at him.

“Then, your guide will show you around. Your training in working with magic will take place, in the first couple of years. While you are learning, we will ask the two of you to show the realm off to the potential investors,” Rhea says, and then fans herself with her paper fan. She is eyeing Daniel up and down, and her cheeks color more crimson by the second.

I frown at her, and move, so I can wrap an arm around Daniel’s middle. Her eyes go wide. Huh, she must have thought that Daniel imprinting on me was something done just so he can land the job.

Our guide from before comes into the room, and we all, even the interviewers, pile out of the room. She leads us to a big laboratory on the first floor. Although, this time, we take the elevator.

“Now that we have someone to prove the Dimensional Theory, two someone actually, we can get a permanent parking, and Roddy won’t shift around so much,” Agafia says, and Daniel blinks at her.

“The robot has a name?” He asks.

“Well, yes. Roddy is a building, honey. Why wouldn’t he have a name?” Agafia asks. I can see that she has confused him now. I lean in, and whisper in his ear that I’ll explain when we get home.

The lab is white, with equipment that is found not only in the Ursula solar system, but from all around the Cosmos. That makes me think. If this was just a theory, then how come did they managed to get their hands on a soul scanner? Those are heavily regulated. Still, I clear my mind, when we near a couple of desks.

There is a big Caltea wood desk with tables next to it, for experimenting, and on it, there is a small desk made from red wood. Probably Agafia’s desk. Next to the Caltea desk, there is a metal desk, and two desks made from black granite. The guide goes to the two spaces that are next to the granite desks, and presses a button on the wall. A screen appears. Wow, this place is really high-tech.

“So, what sort of desks and work stations do you want?” The elven guide asks.

“Whatever, it is fine,” Daniel says next to me. She shrugs, and summons two desks out of granite with metal tables separating them. I feel sort of put out, that I won’t be able to sit next to Daniel, but don’t argue. After all, we will be here to work, not to romance each other.

“Well, if this is all,” the woman asks. Agafia nods, and the guide leaves.

Daniel shifts in his spot a little. Everyone turns to stare at him.

“Uhm, who was she? I keep calling her guide in my mind,” he admits. Agafia shakes her head.

“You really should have told him more about our customs,” the pixie tells me, and I bow my head.

“It is just that, the knowledge I take for granted, is not something he knows,” I defend myself.

“It is no excuse. What if he blurts out something like that on a fundraiser?” Nahndor asks. I can see that Daniel is fisting his pants, while his head is bowed. I go to him, and lift his chin.

“How about this: we will spend an hour and a half each day, with me giving you tidbits about Ursula 590. That way, you’ll fit right in,” I suggest.

“It will take more than an hour and a half each day,” one of the dark elf twins says. “And her name is Alberta. If you simply looked at her tag, you’d know.”

“We will help too,” the other one says, trying to soften up his brother’s words. Or not, since they share a look, and two devious sets of smirks appear on their faces. I can tell that those two are troublemakers. There is no doubt in my mind about that.

“Now that you have accepted the position, I think it is time for us to tell you about what we do,” Agafia says, and points at herself. “I am the CEO of Manacom. Nahndor is our chief supplier. All the equipment you see here was negotiated to be delivered to this lab by him. Rhea is our Chief Public Opinions Expert, and the twins are security.”

Daniel blinks at that.

“Uhm, no offense, but they don’t look very muscular. Or, at least, they don’t seem to be carrying a weapon,” he says. I begin shaking my head at the twins, but they open their mouths, and extend them, until their huge fangs are the only thing that a very shaken Daniel can see. I hold him in my arms, as he begins to mumble something about something called supernatural.
