Chapter 41:

Lying the trap

Constantine:

Daniel really handled the debate well. I mean, if he had insulted Mr. Deltona with his lack of knowledge, we might have been forced to stop the informational campaign on the rocket. Not only did he managed to argue with all the Prime Minister’s points, he managed to secure him as someone who advocates our mission.

When the rocket lands on Ursula 589, we get out of our booth, and separate from Rodger Deltona. He is here on a vacation, but he did say that, if we run another informational booth on the moon, then he is going to come over, and argue some scales off the tourists. With him on board, we might even get some media coverage.

“Oh, there they are,” Daniel says next to me, and points at the people who are supposed to escort us to the hotel. They also are responsible for our protection, but that is their secret mission.

“Let us not keep them waiting,” I say. I slither with half of our carry-on luggage, towards the two elves, who hold up a huge sign over their heads. It has our names written on it. When we near them, they lower the sign, and click on a button on it, which causes it to shrink to the point of a business card.

“Mr. Angelid, Mr. Samkiel. The car is waiting. This way,” one of the elves says, as he reaches out to me.

The two are twins, but they don’t put on a twin act like Frederik and Ferenc. Also, they are light, and not dark, elves.

I hand him two of the bags I am carrying, and see that Daniel is also unloading onto our second guide/protector. They lead us to the car, and we get in. Despite this not being the first time for the two of us to be on Ursula 589, both Daniel and I are glued to the windows, taking in the sights.

“On your rights, you will see the flying simulator,” the elf that is driving says, when he sees us gawking in the mirror. “And to your left, we have the hanging gardens.”

“Can we visit all the attractions, this time?” Daniel asks.

“I don’t know. I mean, Ursula 589 is huge,” I protest. Our guides chuckle at that.

“Teleports are covered in your expenses,” the elf in the front seat says. “You can hop from one dome to the next, in the matter of seconds.”

“Of course, you should bottle some happiness from time to time. To attract the thief,” the driver says.

“Yes, if you do it in a public place, the news will spread. With the Gigantoboa fundraiser, you are doing as well, I think the thief will know that you are here within the hour,” the other elf says.

“Uhm, what are your names?” I hear Daniel ask. I, too, feel strange calling them driver elf, and other elf, in my head.

“My name is Robin,” the driver says. “Not my real name, but for the duration of this mission, it is the name I go by.”

“Are you a secret agent?” Daniel asks, with stars in his eyes.

“Something like that. Catching this thief has bigger stakes than just stopping some robberies. If the thief is one of those shadow creatures that tried to enter through your mirror portals, then it is our government’s prerogative, to learn more about it,” Robin says. I blink at that. The government is involved? Is Rodger’s visit to Ursula 589 a coincidence? Or, is it planned? I mean, he must have had a week, to get the timing of our arrival.

“You don’t have to worry about any of that. Your safety is our priority,” the other elf says. “I go by Ray, by the way.”

“What will happen to the thief, if we can catch him?” Daniel asks. I can guess what he is thinking. If the government is involved, then the chances that the thief will end up in a lab, if he is one of the citizens of Dimension Beta, are big.

“Don’t you worry about that,” Robin says, and then turns to the left. A huge building comes into view. I can see that it is moving around.

“A piece building?” Daniel asks. Yes, he has seen Roddy before, but Roddy never moved in such an obvious manner before his eyes.

“Yes, well, they are more cost-effective,” Ray says, and then takes out a car key. He clicks on the button, and the piece building parks. “For the duration of your stay, you will be the only civilians inside the building.”

“For your own safety, you will go nowhere without an escort,” Robin tells us, as he stops the car in the parking lot.

“We will do our best to follow the safety measures,” I say, and then look at Daniel. He has a conflicted look on his face. I reach out, and take a hold of his hand. To him, I say. “It will be great. Like a big vacation, with a bit of work to the side.”

He looks ready to argue, but then thinks better of it. We get out of the car, and the staff from the hotel comes out, to get our luggage. Robin and Ray lead us up the ramps, and to our room.

“So, how do you want to do this?” Robin asks. I blink at him. “We heard that you collected some potions, as extra bait.”

“We figured we can just place them on the desk, opened?” I say. If the thief has a sense of smell, then the potions and their scents will be a beacon for him. The nanobots can do the rest.

“That will place you at too big of a risk. How about you give us the potions, and we will place them in a location that has only one exit?” Robin suggests. Daniel opens his mouth to argue, but I am already getting the potions out.

“Yes, of course. Here they are,” I hand over the protective case, and then look to Daniel. “They are professionals. Trust in them.”

He doesn’t say a thing. I think that, as soon as the two agents leave, he is going to tell me what he is thinking. Until then, all I can do is try to calm his nerves down with a reassuring look.
