Chapter 42:

So, I’m taking back

Robin:

It is a calm night. I don’t think the two civilians were ecstatic about the government being involved, but hey, someone had to pay for their honeymoon, right? I chuckle at that, and look at Ray, who is writing our report for the day.

“Darn, I used the word peacefully one too many times. Robin, give me a synonym,” he says. I shrug, before answering.

“Serenely?” I offer. My brother turns to look at me, his tablet in his hand.

“I am writing a report, not a book,” he retorts. I am just about to tell him that it doesn’t matter, seeing as no one reads reports not marked as mission complete, when we hear a crash from outside. I take my gun, and Ray follows suit.

Silently, I make the sign to move out. We are on the first floor. The same as the room, where we left all the emotion potions at. If this is the thief, then we are finally going to catch him. I pick up the net with the nanobots, the normal one, the one that just wraps around the criminals is not going to cut it, if the thief is a shadowy monster.

We exit, to red lights. The door to the trap room is wide open. There is something fighting the shields there, and both Ray and I rush to it. The thing that greets us is some sort of shadow, in a cloud of dust. It is in the shape of a Naga, and its eyes are black bottomless pits.

“Freeze! You have the right to remain silent...” I begin, but the creature chuckles at me.

“You’d think that, I will get tired of hearing this, after so many times,” the creatures says, and then gives out a violent jerk. The shields snap around it, and it looms threateningly at us.

“Sir, we will shoot you,” Ray says, as the creature comes to him.

“Shoot away, handsome. I don’t mind,” I gawk at the nerve of that thing. When it reaches out for Ray, my partner does indeed shoot through it. We don’t hear a scream, though. The dust around the shadow Naga parts, to reveal a hole. One that fills in soon after.

“What?” Ray takes a couple of steps back, when the creature begins to advance at him again.

“You elves, and Naga, and oh, this is perplexing, is it not?” The being stops in its advancement, to turn towards me. “Why don’t I just call you humans?”

I sputter at that. How dare this thing call me a human!

“You humans are very two-faced. It wasn’t so long ago, when you lived just on Earth. Then, you mutated, and cut all ties with your home planet, right?” The creature places two fingers on its chin, as if in deep thought. “Of course, some of the characteristics of the people you replaced are still to be seen on you. Some manifest in pointy ears, some, in tails.”

“That is just a theory,” I say, as I aim the gun. Still, I don’t bother to fire it. What if I hit Ray, instead? Besides, the plasma bullet is just going to pass straight through this thing.

“You dare,” the thing says, beginning to advance towards me, “Question the dead?”

I begin to make steps back. Soon, I hear footsteps coming towards us. Ah, the rest of the team is coming to the rescue.

The creature snarls, and then goes back into the room with the potions. It comes out with a single orange bottle with red bubbles, and smirks at me.

“My compliments to one of the few pure Naga out in the Cosmos. Tell Tine I am a huge fan,” and then, the being disappears in a puff of smoke.

“What the hell was that?” Ray slumps to the ground, just as our teammates come around the corner.

“Agents, are you hurt?” A Naga, who was charged with looking after Constantine and Daniel for the night, asks.

“A bit shaken, but unharmed,” I tell him because Ray is just staring off into space. “We have some new information about the thief.”

“File it in a report, then. Does agent Ray need a blanket?” The Naga asks. That snaps Ray from his stupor. He gets up, and shakes his head. Then, he slaps each of his cheeks twice.

“The thing can’t be hit with a plasma gun,” he finally mutters, and comes over to me. “Come on. I think that I no longer need to use the word peacefully in the report as often.”

“Well, that is one solved problem, at least,” I joke. That seems to be the right thing to do because Ray chuckles at that, and begins to act more like himself.

“Yes. And all it costed us, was the scare of the century,” he jokes back. A couple of the agents’ chuckle. Ray addresses them, then. “Chances are, the thing will be back. You will have to expect a shadow, encased in dust. The criminal element claims to be a spirit, but it might also be playing off the theory of Mr. Angelid, and Mr. Samkiel. I knew we should have kept it under wraps.”

“Well, we didn’t have a say in that,” the Naga says, showing just what he thought about the information leaking out. “Do we need the assistance of the people at Manacom? They might have some useful equipment.”

“Both of our consultants,” I snort at the way I am made to address Constantine and Daniel. They are bait. If we were on a different planet, then the potions would have been left in their room, for a better effect. “Must be informed of that. And contacting Manacom would be for the best. They do employ the Crosby twins.”

Ray shudders at the mention of the hell spawns.

“I don’t like working with the Biters,” he says, but I shake my head.

“If we want to catch the thief, we have to work with them. If there is someone out there that can boost of being an excellent hunter, then it is a pair of dark elves,” I see him biting his bottom lip to stop himself from arguing.

My decision doesn’t sit well with me, either. I just have to have faith in the chips in their brains, that stop them from being the formally ravenous dark elves, that they used to be. Back when they meant more than just colleagues, to both Ray and me.
