Chapter 75:

Earth got talent

Constantine:

A month after the dinner party, everything about the TV Show is set. We decided to screen the contestants during the casting, so that we can have a bigger pick.

After all, if we wait for the final round, then we might not get any shamans in our nets. It took some of Tony’s hypnotizing magic, but we got the organizers of the Nth season of Survivor to add a task during the casting, when the contestants will be coached into performing magic.

So far, we have seen many people who sing, dance, do tricks, but no one has managed to do what Daniel could, after only a hint on my side. I rub the bridge of my nose, and lean back into my chair.

“This is hopeless,” I say, and Nahndor nods.

“I can’t believe that they think that they should dance and sing on a deserted island,” Agafia says, and I nod. Honestly, some people have a very weird view about survival.

“They are not really going to be in any danger,” Daniel says, and I look at him. “Haven’t you seen Survivor before?”

“No,” I tell him. The contestant on the screen looks ready to poop his pants, so hard is he holding his air. But of lights, there is no trace.

“They have medical staff there, and there are rumors that they are given food and water off-screen,” Daniel says.

“Well, obviously. You don’t expect them to simply be left to starve and die out there, do you?” Ferenc asks. When the contestant gives up, and looks at the judges like a kicked puppy, he snorts. “If this one really wanted to, he could have done it.”

Rhea checks the file of the man on the screen, and sighs.

“And this one even said he was a street magician,” she says, as she shifts the papers to the next on the list. “Hey, a Samkiel!”

Daniel perks up at this. We wait for Mister Kicked Puppy to leave the stage, and then a man, younger than Daniel, but looking like him, comes up.

“My cousin Nathaniel,” Daniel says, as he smiles. “He always loved magic.”

“He could do magic, and you thought to tell us just now?” Agafia chides.

“No, I said that he always loved magic. He would get together with a couple of role-playing people in parks, and pretend to be an elf,” Daniel says, with more than a little fondness. “Aunt Janice never had any problems with him.”

We quiet down, when the judges begin with the breaking of the ice. We have heard them speak so many times, yet, they never fail to say something new.

“Nathaniel, what brought you here today?” One of the judges asks.

“I owe it to a family member, to do this. To show everyone that magic is real. Daniel, if you are watching this, know I found your forum entries, and I know you are not dead,” the brunette says, and then holds up his hand. We wait with bated breath, and there it is. A light show, much like the one that Daniel showed me the first time.

“Yes!” Agafia flies high, and does a flip. Then, she lands on her desk, and picks up her phone. Soon, the phone of one of the judges’ rings, and she picks up. The two of them, the human and Agafia, talk for a while, and then the judge smiles.

“I am sure you will see your cousin again, and soon,” the human says, and then points to the exit of the stage. “Some people are waiting for you outside. I will tell you a secret, Nate. We were screening for your talent, as well as doing the Survivor casting. We are glad that we found you.”

Nathaniel nods, and goes to the back room. Soon, the pickup team does their job, and the light that indicates that there is someone in the teleport room lights up green.

“Ok, team,” Agafia says, as she flies around us all like a pixie on a sugar high. “We have watched a fart show, a striptease without the removal of clothes, and many other things that we need mind bleach for. But now, we have a real shaman on our hands!”

“Remember, act normal,” Ferenc and Frederik say at the same time.

“You couldn’t resist, could you?” I ask, and the twins just grin at me.

“Come on, get in line to greet the newest member of the Manacom family,” Agafia says, and we do get in line before the door. Daniel is practically bouncing on his feet. I guess he must have missed his family a lot. He has mine now, but that doesn’t mean that he has forgotten his own.

The door opens after what seems like an eternity, and Alberta comes with Nathaniel in tow. I can see that he has blue eyes, instead of caramel like Daniel’s. But his hair is the same shade of brown as Daniel’s. Even their builds are similar. Daniel rushes from his spot, and tackles his cousin. The two are reduced to giggles.

“Where the hell were you?” Nathaniel asks.

“On an alien planet,” Daniel says, letting go of Nathaniel, to show us all off. “I even managed to land a job I can keep for more than a month.”

When Nathaniel sees me, his eyes go wide.

“That is that tribal dude,” he says, and I tilt my head to the side. “From the photos.”

“That was from a birthday celebration,” I defend myself, but he is already speaking again.

“And the kid? Is she real too?” Ah, he must be speaking about Beth.

“We can take you to meet her. Just, don’t take pictures of her, if you don’t have chocolate on you. She will tax you with frowns, until you cave,” Daniel says.

“Nathaniel Samkiel, it is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Agafia, and I would like to offer you a job,” Agafia says. I can see that she simply couldn’t hold herself back anymore.

“I didn’t apply for one,” Nathaniel tells her, confused.

“That is ok. You get offered jobs around here. Isn’t it great?” Daniel asks, and Nathaniel just shrugs.

“Tell me more,” he says, and Agafia begins to sing the praises of our little family.
