Chapter 10 – Wasn’t it because you wanted to hear my story?

Lian Xi and Su Jiao followed Wanderer’s soul all the way to the hospital.

Hospitals, cemeteries and crematoriums.

In the world of the living, these were the places with the heaviest yin energy.

However even so, it shouldn’t be as strong as this!

Even before reaching this particular hospital, Lian Xi already felt chills running through him. He frowned and turned to Su Jiao. “The yin energy around this hospital seems unusually strong.”

Su Jiao’s look was serious: “Do you think there’s a malicious ghost involved?”

The two people originally thought that Wanderer’s soul left his body due to some type of accident, but now looking at it the situation, it didn’t seem so simple.

Su Jiao: “This person’s body should be inside the hospital. If the distance is close enough, it’s possible to use a spell to return the soul to the body.” After a moment he asked, “Lian Xi, do you want to do it or should I?”

‘Bystander-pretending-to-be-a-Xuanxiu’ Lian Xi said humbly: “You first.”

Su Jiao grinned. He scratched his head: “Then I won’t be polite.”.

In a dim corner of the hospital garden, a cold wind was blowing. The trees rustled in the breeze.

A wispy soul stood inside the darkness, his eyes confused. He obsessively raised his head and stared at the hospital building.

Lian Xi was very curious about what kind of method Su Jiao would use to send Wanderer’s soul back.

Previously, Su Jiao had continually misunderstood Lian Xi as being “someone from the same path”, that is a XuanXiu. But only Lian Xi knew himself.

He’s not anything.

Ever since he was young, Lian Xi has had a pair of yin-yang eyes.

When he was a child, he wasn’t able to distinguish between ghosts and people. He would always mistake ghosts as being people. He would say things like, “Auntie, you’re about to crash into Uncle” and would ask the little girl in the white dress hunched over crying in the corner of the room why she was so sad. Thus all the people around him began to treat him like a freak. Only his dad and grandfather never blamed him.

His father even told him, “You’re a very special child.”

But very quickly, he lost his father, then he lost his grandfather too.

Lian Xi lowered his head and looked at the bronze bell on his wrist.

Only this bell had accompanied him all his life.

His father had told him that the bell was a gift from an old nurse when he was born. It was a mute bell that didn’t ring. At first he only wore it as jewellery on his arm, but afterwards there was a time when Lian Xi ran into an evil ghost that was looking for someone to replace him in death. Just as Lian Xi was desperate and had run out of options, this bell suddenly rang and the evil ghost’s spirit was hit until its souls were scattered.

Only then did Lian Xi discover the magical effect of the bell. Since then, he has gradually become familiar with this bell. But he still doesn’t really know it’s exact use.

But anyway, this wasn’t important.

The important thing was….

Don’t panic when something happens, just ring the bell!

Although Lian Xi didn’t really know what the bell was for, he knew it could definitely save his life!

Just like before when Su Jiao had used up all his ideas regarding Wanderer’s soul so Lian Xi decided to “treat the dead horse like it was alive” and directly ring the bell. It actually worked.

His baby bell really didn’t disappoint him. Straight away Wanderer’s ghost seemed to develop some type of consciousness and began looking for its body.

Of course, it was a positive result this time around. However no one knew if next time he rang the bell, if Wanderer’s soul would be directly hit until it scattered.

Lian Xi touched the bell and saw Su Jiao flipping through his pockets and take out a brush.

It was a slender calligraphy brush made out of white jade with a carved dragon on the body.

The tip was made from a cluster of fine white hairs with no visible texture, however each of the hairs was very smooth and flowed gently in the wind.

Su Jiao held the pen with his right hand and narrowed his eyes. He fumbled around in his pocket again as though looking for something but after a moment, his face changed. He whispered, “****! I actually forgot to bring it!”

Lian Xi raised his eyebrow and was about to say “it’s okay, if there’s no other options we can use my bell”, but then he suddenly saw a streak of determination run through Su Jiao’s eyes. He lifted his left thumb to his mouth and then…

Bit down hard!

His short housemate was in so much pain he teared up, but he didn’t want to waste his own fresh blood. He immediately dipped the tip of the brush onto his bleeding thumb. He wrote two large characters in the air and at the same time chanted, “By the HunYuan River with Vajras on each side, ghosts pass through from a thousand miles, entering in a rush!”  {T/N: Ancient prose, approximate translation only orz ^^;}

“Soul, return….”

“Soul return!”

A gust of wind rose up from the ground, engulfing Wanderer’s soul.

Wanderer’s soul slowly opened its mouth. He made babbling noises as though he wanted to struggle.

His short housemate’s eyes flashed. His blood-stained palm hit forward and slapped the words he’d written in the air towards Wanderer. The moment these words stuck to Wanderer, he suddenly stopped struggling. He bowed his head obediently, followed the wind and flew all the way up towards a window in the hospital ward then swooped inside.

After a few seconds, Su Jiao turned to him and smiled triumphantly. “It’s done! What do you think? I’m awesome right!”

Lian Xi didn’t reply and slowly looked behind him.

Su Jiao followed his gaze and saw the two bloody characters float back in the air. It just so happened that they stopped on either side of Su Jiao’s head.

The character on the left read “cong” {从 = follow/obey}.

The character on the right read “xin” {心 = heart}.

Lian Xi: “….”

Such a great “Follow Your Heart” spell!

Su Jiao: “…..”

Su Jiao: *Cough cough cough*!!!

He quickly waved his hands to disperse the two words and then gazed at Lian Xi with a serious expression: “Give me a chance to explain!”

Lian Xi lightly nodded his head: “It’s all good. In all things you should follow your heart. I understand.”

Su Jiao: “…..”

“But I really have an explanation ahhhhh!”

Lian Xi wasn’t at all interested in the “follow your heart” spell however Su Jiao didn’t want to give up. As the two people walked out of the hospital, Su Jiao kept trying to explain.

“The two characters from before don’t mean what you’re thinking!”

“What am I thinking?”

“Song ah!” {怂= In netspeak, it means someone that is tacky/vulgar/a coward, there’s a proper meaning too but Su Jiao is referring to this popular meaning. The word is formed by the two characters mentioned earlier.}

“Oh right, whatever you say.”

“…..”

Su Jiao: “I’m really not song!!!!”

Su Jiao was really distraught.

His sect comes from QuFu, ShanDong. It was one of the few XuanXiu Sects which openly showed themselves to the public. As for the current generation of cultivators, they cultivated in the way of “Words and Literature”. Every cultivator would first have to cultivate until they produced their own personal “Destined Word”. After cultivating it, they would use it as a starting basis to begin learning the way of “Word and Literature”. They would place all the words and books they had read into their heart, and then slowly turn them into magical spells.

But right now…

Why was his “Destined Word” ‘song’ ah! {T/N: As I said, there is a proper meaning of the word 怂 which sort of means to instigate/startle people into going forth and doing something, but Su Jiao is lamenting that in modern slang, it means someone/something that is tacky, vulgar or cowardly}

Su Jiao explained everything very seriously to Lian Xi but Lian Xi’s face was very calm. It was as though he completely didn’t hear it and treated it as wind blowing by his ear.

Eating melon.

Ga-ci-ga-ci {T/N: The sound of eating}.

So delicious.

So it turns out cultivating magic was like this.

The two people walked to the hospital’s parking lot. Lian Xi nodded his head. “I understand. You don’t need to explain further.”

Su Jiao: “…..”

Su Jiao: “You’re laughing at me.”

Lian Xi: “I’m not.”

“You’re laughing!”

“I’m not.”

“You’re still laughing!”

Lian Xi: “….”

“OK, fine I’ll laugh then.”

Su Jiao: “…..”

Is this how a human should talk ma!!!

The short housemate was extremely distraught. Lian Xi secretly glanced at him and a smile lifted the corner of his lips.

It doesn’t seem like such a bad thing to have a housemate.

Lian Xi was thinking that he probably doesn’t need to move to a new place anymore. Suddenly, his footsteps stopped. He turned around abruptly. His left hand moved and a clear bell sound rang through the parking lot.

Om!!!

“Ahhhh!”

There was a shrill scream that ripped open the sky.

The next moment, a red shadow rushed up towards them with a furious roar as though it wanted to kill them.

“It’s you! You’re the one who stopped me from killing him! It’s you!!”

Su Jiao yelled in horror: “Lian Xi!” He wanted to reach out to grab his pen but his movement was too slow. It was too late. That malicious ghost rushed over in front of the two people. Strong yin energy directly knocked the only amateur-level Su Jiao to one side. Lian Xi was also knocked backwards a couple of steps.

Lian Xi immediately raised his left wrist but that evil ghost’s hands were wrapped around his neck.

The strong yin energy was accompanied by the sensation of suffocation. Lian Xi felt dizzy and his vision went dark, his entire body seemed to have lost energy. His left wrist was trembling as though he wanted to shake the bell however his entire focus was on his neck. Don’t talk about shaking his wrist, he didn’t even have the energy to open his lips!

Su Jiao climbed up from the ground. He took out his pen and bit his finger, preparing to write.

The word ‘song’ had been written halfway before suddenly the brush trembled then stopped moving.

Su Jiao: “…..”

Su Jiao furiously: “Godammnit, why did you pick now to suddenly become song!!” {T/N: He’s calling his pen a coward}

So embarrassing!

Right now the malicious ghost looked like it was about to strangle Lian Xi to death and Su Jiao had only written ‘song’ halfway.

This malicious ghost’s eyes were blood-red and her hair was disheveled. She was no longer satisfied with just strangling this person who had hurt her, but opened her mouth wide as though she wanted to bite him to death! But just at the last moment, there was a dark black light which flashed from Lian Xi’s wrist. The next moment, the bronze bell broke free from the shackles of the red thread and rose into the air!

There it stood suspended midair, not moving.

Omm!

The antique and simple bronze bell rang out, the sound spread out on all four sides.

“Ahhhh!”

The female ghost gave a terrible scream. She let go and was knocked flying several metres.

However, it wasn’t the end yet!

The bronze bell was hanging in the air. It rotated a few times as though looking for it’s enemy. Then it flew towards ghost and then it once again-

Omm!

“Ahhhh!”

Several bloodstains blossomed on the female ghost’s body in an instant,

The sound of the bell turned into a knife, slicing apart the spiritual root of the ghost.

All things turned to silence, there was only this sound!

The bronze bell shook again and sounded for the third time.

Ommm!

“No, no, save me! I was wrong…”

The female ghost’s spirit was hit until she was about to scatter completely. She was almost completely transparent. Su Jiao, who was watching, opened his mouth wide in shock.

The bell was about to ring for the fourth time. Without a doubt once it rang for the fourth time, this female ghost’s spirit would scatter and vanish forever. But right at the critical juncture…

A white and thin hand appeared and tightly grasped the bell that was floating mid-air!

Lian Xi gulped air desperately as he held onto the bell. He opened his palms and looked at this tiny little bell.

The little bell shook slightly and didn’t make a sound, as though it were sulking.

Lian Xi lightly stroked it and then wordlessly placed it back. He breathed a few more times until he felt steady again and said calmly, “That’s enough. I know this ghost.” After speaking, he raised his head and saw the female ghost that was lying on the ground. His gaze swept over the female ghost’s nearly transparent soul and said her name, “That’s right isn’t it… Cat Fur Sauce?”

Su Jiao ran over in relief. “What, you actually know her? Cat Fur Sauce? What kind of name is that? It doesn’t sound like a person’s name”

The female ghost lying on the ground slowly clenched her fingers. When she heard her name from Lian Xi’s mouth, she suddenly knew that the beautiful youth in front of her knew her story.

She gritted her teeth and stood up. She began to tell her story, “That’s right. I am Cat Fur Sauce. That’s my online name.”

As she spoke, she laughed mockingly at herself and lowered her head. “I didn’t think I would end up where I am now. Since you know me, you should know my boyfriend is Hydrogen right? Originally Hydrogen and I loved each other very much, however his agent told him to break up with me! It’s all because of that despicable agent, even when I was about to die, he made Hydrogen…”

“Wait.”

The female ghost was taken aback and raised her head.

Su Jiao was also startled and turned to look at Lian Xi who had spoken abruptly.

There were no ripples or expressions on Lian Xi’s beautiful and delicate face. His eyes calmly looked at this female ghost who had begun to tell her story while weeping. He just stared at her quietly.

His eyes were deep and dark like bottomless pools of water.

Lian Xi’s voice was extremely calm, and what he said was really cold to the extreme.

“… Did I say that I was interested in hearing your story?”

The female ghost’s body shook and her lips fell open.

Lian Xi looked at her calmly. “For one, who knows if you’re really as victimized as you make yourself out to be. And even if you are….”

“That’s still no excuse for trying to kill me!”

The next moment the bronze bell trembled. Lian Xi walked forward with big steps and used the left hand that carried the bell to ruthlessly strangle the female ghost’s neck. With one hand he pressed her to the ground!

His gaze was icy cold as he looked down wordlessly at the female ghost who had already been heavily injured by the bell.

However his fingers didn’t loosen. They continued to apply force, and more force!

Her eyes were open deathly wide. Just as she was about to die of suffocation, Cat Fur Sauce squeezed out a few words. She asked the question, “Then why didn’t you…. Let that bell…. Hit me to death… in the first place?”

Wasn’t it because you wanted to hear my story?

Wasn’t it because you sympathized with me?

Lian Xi looked at her and said, word by word, “I just wanted to tell you that you are not innocent. You deserve to die.”

After he spoke, he closed his fingers and the bronze bell quivered happily on his wrist.

Then…

Om!!!

The soul scattered and vanished!!
