Chapter 14

Lian Xi was still considering the White Reaper Record in his hands but at this time his short housemate was already speaking disbelievingly, “Are you serious? Is the Underworld always so casual? Just take this and then you’re suddenly the White Reaper?” He lowered his voice and grumbled, “Then if I just casually snatch a Reaper Record, aren’t I also able to get an iron bowl?” {Iron bowl = basically a guaranteed job for life where you almost never get fired, think government jobs.}

Lian Xi glanced at his housemate, thinking this shortie didn’t seem to be as good as him when it came to supernatural things. “Dream faster.”

Su Jiao: “Hey!”

Lian Xi once again looked at the thin Reaper Record in his hands.

It was a simple plain and cover and three characters from the Song style of writing said: Reaper Record. {Wu Chang Zheng, written in one of the archaic character types from China.}

Opening the book, the first few pages are all “Reaper Instructions” and the rest are all blank. At first glance, it looks a little bit like the ‘Death Note’ he’d seen in the Japanese anime that was popular ten years ago. The difference being that people will die if their name is written on the Death Note, but the names in the Reaper Record are written after death.

As Lian Xi flipped through it randomly, suddenly he saw on the last page the phrase was printed:

[Since the ancient days, who on earth does not die?]

Lian Xi: “….”

What the hell was this trying to imply?!

Have you guys paid Wen TianXiang copyright fees?! {Poet/writer from the 1200s who wrote this line in one of his poems.}

Lian Xi: “If you need help, I can help you to find the local White Reaper.” After a moment he added, “I’m a live streaming host. So I have regular hours where I need to broadcast. Aside from that, I’m pretty free.”

Lie Chen: “No need.”

Lian Xi: “What?”

Lie Chen: “Isn’t it just you?”

Lian Xi: “….”

You guys really aren’t picky at all ah!

Silently looking at the blinding golden light surrounding the man in black’s body, then thinking about the food filled with bugs and the cold showers he’d taken over the last few days, Lian Xi gritted his teeth and made a decision. “If you really want me to be the White Reaper, it’s not impossible. I guess I’m pretty idle….”

Su Jiao: “????”

When have you been idle?!

Every day you can’t even be bothered leaving the house! Damned shut-in!

When Lie Chen’s eyebrows raised, the mole between his eyebrows also moved slightly. He said firmly, “I said, it’s you.”

Lian Xi: “Okay fine, it’s me ba.”

Lie Chen: “It’s really you.”

Lian Xi: “En en, if you say it’s me then it’s me.” Anyway you’re the big golden boss, whatever you say goes.

Lie Chen smiled: “It’s definitely you.”

This time Lian Xi felt something was not quite right. He raised his head and met the man’s eyes.

The corner of the man’s mouth was raised in a smile and he looked quite casual. However there was no laughter in his eyes, and he didn’t seem to be randomly trying to find someone to “carry the burden”. He was looking at Lian Xi and seemed to realize that the youth was no longer acting nonchalant but now looked serious. The man seemed to  find this amusing. He leaned forward slightly and again repeated into Lian Xi’s ear: “I said… it’s you.”

Lian Xi: “….”

Without changing his expression, Lian Xi took a few steps backwards. He turned over the Reaper Record and said calmly, “What evidence do you have?”

The man thought about this. “It looks like you’ve also lost your memories.”

Lian Xi: “???”

Ha?!

When did I lose my memories?!

Then, Lian Xi obtained a very strange theory of amnesia from this man’s mouth.

According to the previous Black Reaper; yin and yang, humans and ghosts, are separated. If any ghosts wanted to travel from the yin realm to the yang realm, they needed to pay a price. Even if this is a ghost that’s eating public rations and is coming to fulfill official duties, there is still a certain price they must pay. The most serious price would be a huge loss in power and strength. It’s possible that even before seeing the sun in the human world, they would have already died and gone to reincarnate. A less serious price would be a small injury which they would recover from in a few days.

Although getting amnesia wasn’t something that the previous Black Reaper had seen before, he’d heard of it.

According to his guess, the reason that Su City’s new White Reaper hadn’t reported to work in so many years was either because he was stinky and shameless, or because he had accidentally lost his memories.

After hearing so many ridiculous theories, Lian Xi said seriously, “Although what you say sort of makes sense, however I remember everything from my childhood up until now very clearly.”

Lie Chen: “Oh, there’s also another possibility.”

Lian Xi was surprised: “There’s still more?”

Lie Chen: “When the previous White Reaper went down to the Underworld to reincarnate, the Black Reaper was not present. The White Reaper suddenly ran into a malicious ghost, lost the battle and died. It can be considered a violent death. According to the Black Reaper, prior to dying the White Reaper may have possibly have passed on his position to someone else. If this happened then the Underworld would treat it as though the new White Reaper has already been assigned and therefore not take any more notice of the matter. Of course this new person has not taken up office for all this time.”

Lian Xi: “….”

Ten years ago I was only 13, does the Underworld seriously use child labour?!

Lian Xi felt like the original Su City local Black Reaper wasn’t just territorial and selfish, but also had a huge hole in his brain. Unbelievable!

Thus Lian Xi didn’t take his theories seriously and just treated it as nonsense. However his short housemate was scratching his chin, glanced at him and said seriously, “Lian Xi, do you think he really passed the position to you?”

Lian Xi: “….”

The heavens had dropped a huge pot on him!

How can I get amnesia without my knowing about it?!

Lian Xi really felt speechless.

Just as he wanted to make a perfunctual reply, and just concede to this big pot of burden for the sake of the golden man, the man’s low and soft voice sounded. “Also, I have other evidence.”

Lian Xi was surprised; “What?”

The slender fingers of the man moved slightly and the moment a small album with a gold cover and pulsating with purple light appeared in the man’s hand.

In an instant, Lian Xi and Su Jiao’s gaze were attracted to this small album

It was an exquisite palm-sized album. The cover was brilliantly gold and on it was written six small black seal script. In the dark night, the golden light seemed to glimmer in the wind, and the purple electric arc pulsed above the simple and majestic album. It had a strange and powerful ability to make one unable to look away from it.

The two of them both opened their lips slightly and seemed to lose themselves.

All the way until the man snapped his fingers and the album made a clattering noise. The two of them instantly recovered.

Lian Xi vigilantly raised his head and looked at the other person.

Lie Chen’s voice was calm: “This is the Reaper Magical Artifact that I brought from the Underworld. Every ghost official has a unique magical artifact that no one else has.”

The album indeed made people feel awed and frightened, but Lian Xi didn’t know what it had to do with him.

But then the next minute.

He saw the man’s slender fingers gently pinch the album and pull it open slowly, as though he were playing an accordion.

“Hua-la—-”

“Ding-ning~!”

Lian Xi: “????”

Su Jiao: “????”

The two people lowered their heads and looked together at the bronze bell on Lian Xi’s wrist.

Lie Chen raised the corner  of his lips and once again pulled over the album.

“Hua-la!”

The bronze bell immediately happily responded: “Ding-ning~!” {Different sound characters used to when Lian Xi rang the bell before for Wanderer.}

The golden album: “Hualala!”

The bronze bell: “Ding-ning-ning!”

Hualalala!!!

Diningningning!!!

Are you guys goddamn singing a song ah!

Lie Chen smiled: “This should be enough right?”

Su Jiao’s face was very complicated. He directly defected. “Lian Xi, did you really get amnesia and not even realize it?”

Lian Xi: “…..”

I almost believed in your nonsense!

Now that this happened, Lian Xi’s brain was moving quickly.

Su Jiao pondered, “Ten years ago, did you run into someone that suddenly died? Just then Lord Black Reaper said that ghost officials don’t have to be ghosts. They can also be humans or creatures. Maybe someone beside you was the White Reaper! Oh that’s right, didn’t you tell me some time before that your dad died in a car accident ten or so years ago?”

Lian Xi said darkly: “…. Didn’t you say the previous Black and White Reaper in Su City were homosexual?”

Lie Chen glanced at him: Huh?

Su Jiao: “That’s right ah! The entire HuaXia knows!”

Lian Xi: “Since it’s my dad, how can he be gay?”

Su Jiao subconsciously wanted to say, “That’s not necessarily true”  but when he saw Lian Xi’s cold gaze sweep over, he swallowed his saliva and closed his mouth. “Sorry.”

Lian Xi retracted his gaze.

He looked towards the east, at the juncture between heaven and earth. There was a faint color of pale blue and white on the horizon.

Lian Xi: “Let’s go home ba.” His voice paused and he looked at the black-clothed man standing with his back to the wind. “Mr Lie… want to go together?

The man’s eyes stayed on the youth’s elegant features for a second, then he flipped his hand and put the golden album away. “Fine.”

***

By the time two people and one Reaper returned home, the sky was already lighting up.

Su Jiao hadn’t slept the whole night. As soon as he got home, Su Jiao went inside and locked the door. He fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

Lian Xi took the man to his own room. “Later today I’ll ask the landlord to rent another room.If you don’t mind, you can stay in my room for now.”

Lie Chen lowered his eyes to look at him. He said softly. “Okay.”

Closing the door, Lian Xi went over to his short housemate’s door.

Dong dong dong!

“What do you want ah!”

“Open the door, let me squeeze in with you.”

“…. @#$@#$%@!”

His short housemate hugged his quilt and lay on the bed. He was so sleepy he had almost fallen back asleep but was still mumbling, “When did you become such a kind person?”

Lian Xi said faintly, “I’m learning from Lei Feng’s spirit. It’s good to do kind deeds as a person, what do you know?”

However his short housemate had already fallen asleep: “Hu—-”

A silly person is fortunate in some ways. Su Jiao was too dumb to think deeply about things and fell asleep in seconds. However, beside him Lian Xi tossed and turned, and couldn’t get to sleep.

The rising sun shined through the curtainless windows of the rental house, illuminating Lian Xi’s knit brows. He raised his left hand and gazed at the little bronze bell on his wrist with a complicated expression. Then he shook it.

There was no sound.

No matter how much he moved, this little bell didn’t make any noise.

Lian Xi knew the rules, that unless he focused his concentration and used his finger to flick it, only then would the bell sound. And every time it rang, something would happen.

However….

Today it had rang.

It had done so carelessly, as though it were natural.

Rang.

Why?

When he had refuted Su Jiao, Lian Xi had done so confidently. He felt sure of himself. But right now his heart began to shake.

Because he remembered that many years ago when his father was still alive, he would ruffle his hair from time to time and look at the bell on his wrist with a strange expression. Then he would say, “When XiXi grows up, Daddy will tell you a secret.”

“Daddy, what kind of secret?”

“When you’re older, you’ll know.”

However, his dad didn’t wait for him to grow up before he died in a motor vehicle accident.

So, what was the secret?

Did it really have something to do with the White Reaper? Could his Dad really be… the White Reaper?!

Suddenly, something flashed through his brain.

That’s right! His dad had told him before, this bell was given to him by an old nurse who had helped deliver him in the operating room! Then wouldn’t everything become clear if he could find the old nurse and ask him?

Without further ado, Lian Xi immediately jumped out of the bed.

His short housemate mumbled, “What are you doing…?”

“Going out on business!” Lian Xi didn’t have time to explain to him. He put on his shoes, hung up his clothes and strode with large steps towards the door.

Very quickly three was the sound of the door closing.

Su Jiao rolled over with the quilt between his legs and fell asleep.

In Lian Xi’s room, the man in black was squatting in front of his bookshelf. Curiously he reached out and picked up a King’s Glory figurine on the shelf. When Lian Xi closed the door abruptly, he was taken aback and his hand pressed with more force than usual. Suddenly, Da Qiao’s staff snapped off. {Da Qiao is a female character from the Three Kingdoms, looks like the characters from the game King’s Glory are based off Three Kingdoms characters.}

Lie Chen: “…..”

Da Qiao holding half of her staff: “…..”

There was no expression on the man’s cold face. He stood up nonchalantly then thinned his lips, thinking for a while. After a moment, he squatted back down. He picked up the broken piece of staff on the ground and then… pressed it back.

“Pa-da.”

It broke off again.

He pressed it back on again.

Fell off again!

Duh, without glue how could it be simply ‘pressed’ back together.

The man’s eyebrows knitted and his dark and deep eyes flashed with icy colors. A faint black light suddenly appeared between his fingers and in the next second, the staff that had been broken in two suddenly ‘stuck’ back together.

The man was taken aback for a moment, raised his hands then looked at the black light remaining between his fingers.

… Was this also one of the powers of the Black Reapers?

All of the Black Reapers in HuaXia: “…..”

We don’t have this power, stop talking nonsense!

We don’t have this kind of power to repair the fractured River of Forgetfulness!

{Sometimes the River of Forgetfulness is portrayed as a river, other times it’s a road/path.}

***

Lian Xi hurriedly ran out of the door. When he reached the elevator, there was the sound of someone opening the door behind him.

He turned around.

He saw it was that group of guys who lived together opposite him. The one that came out was the one who took the initiative to open the door and talk to him the other day.

That fellow saw Lian Xi and grinned, showing his teeth. “Such a coincidence, are you going out to buy breakfast too?”
