Chapter 33

When he first saw the performance rankings, Lian Xi set himself a small goal: to defeat WuXi.

Right now it’s early September. There are a total of 25 cities in the JiangSu, ZheJiang and ShangHai region. SuZhou City is the last with a performance of less than 2,000 points and WuXi is second last with a performance of less than 4,000 points. However, in addition to these two cities, JinHua, the third last, has a performance of more than 8,000 points!

Yes, he chose WuXi not because he was afraid of JinHua and thought he couldn’t beat them but because he wanted to be a down-to-earth ghost official. He didn’t want to be ruthless and wanted to catch ghosts and reincarnate them honestly.

But now it seems that the performance points are not that difficult to earn!

With two days of work, the two earned two thousand points and surpassed WuXi.

Lian Xi couldn’t help feeling a little bit emotional: “Why are the points of ghosts official in WuXi so low? They are really vegetarian eaters and don’t care to make progress.”

Lie Chen looked at the rankings of ghosts’ performance rankings for the month with great satisfaction, nodded slightly and agreed.

You see, the two of them just decided to catch ghosts seriously and they scored 2000 points in one evening. It’s very easy.

Look at Wuxi’s ghost officials.

Alas, how could the underworld have such an unprofessional ghost catcher!

The two of them have completely forgotten the fact that their 2,000 points of performance were stolen from WuXi.

But how can such a thing be called stealing? It’s all about contributing to the building of a harmonious world of the living!

After eating the noodles, dusk arrived.

Lian Xi: “I’m going to the hospital. It’s been a busy day and night. Why don’t you go home first and we will go out to catch ghosts in the early morning?”

Suddenly they were second to last. Lian Xi was happy and was not in a hurry to show his performance further.

Lie Chen seemed to be in a good mood: “Yeah.”

After helping him call a taxi and confirming the location with the driver, Lian Xi sent the Black Reaper away. He checked the time and it was five o’clock in the afternoon. His appointment with Dr. Wang was at five thirty, and he just had enough time.

Half an hour later, in the outpatient hall on the first floor of SuZhou Yuan Hospital.

The hospital outpatient service stopped taking new patients at 5 o’clock in the afternoon and closed at 6 o’clock. At half past five, there are not many patients and family members left in the outpatient hall. Only a few rows were still standing at the door of the pharmacy, waiting in line to get medicine.

The tall, thin, handsome young man held a bag of fruit in one hand and a bag of canned bird’s nest in the other and stood in the outpatient hall, waiting quietly.

Five minutes later, an intern in a white coat got out of the elevator.

When Wang ZiHao saw the things Lian Xi was carrying, his perennial “how I suffer” face became a little bit better. He walked over. “Are these gifts for Sister Qin?”

Lian Xi nodded.

The young intern smiled: “You are very considerate.”

Lian Xi: “It is not easy to find a nurse from more than 20 years ago. Sister Qin has worked hard.”

Wang Zihao pouted, “Of course it is not easy. The information from twenty years ago has long been purged from the hospital system and it took a lot of effort for Sister Qin to help you find that person…”

The door to the obstetrics and gynecology department was closed and Wang ZiHao took Lian Xi directly to the inpatient department. However, the two did not find Sister Qin.

Little nurse: “Sister Qin went to the emergency department. There were two pregnant women suddenly admitted.”

After the hospital closed, the only open consultation room was in the emergency department.

Wang ZiHao: “Oh, then I’ll go look for her.”

The two went to the emergency department.

As soon as they entered the emergency room, three was a burst of sound and activity.

The bright and clean emergency room was full of people. There are queues to pay fees, people sitting on plastic stools and doctors and nurses rushing around in a hurry.

Two mobile stretchers were leaning on the corner of the wall. A bloody middle-aged man sat on one. On another lay a woman holding her belly and yelling. Both of them were anxiously waiting for the doctor to check their situation. Within a few seconds, a young doctor ran over. He had just checked the condition of the woman’s stomach and the middle-aged man on the side was suddenly upset: “My head is bleeding, you should check me first!”

The doctor didn’t even bother to turn around.  “She was here first.”

“But I’m bleeding!”

“You just need to go to the debridement room and get some stitches in a moment. I’ve already called someone for you. It will be okay.”

The middle-aged man suddenly got up and said, “What do you mean? I’m still bleeding, and you don’t care?”

The  young doctor frowned and was about to speak. Suddenly, a nurse ran over. She directly pushed away the stretcher bed the middle-aged man was sitting on just now.

Middle-aged man: “What the hell are you doing!”

The nurse glared at him: “The ambulance just arrived outside. You have no injuries to your leg. Just stand up!”

Middle-aged man: “What the hell is your attitude? You actually dare to glare at me?”

The little nurse has already pushed the stretcher bed away.

Watching this scene, Wang Zihao cursed “stupid” with a cold face.

Lian Xi suddenly understood why this medical student from the same university as him had a stinky face all day long and didn’t want to talk to people.

If he also had to encounter this kind of patient who puts himself first and thought he was the biggest boss in the world every day, then he would not be happy either.

However, such fools are still rare and most of the patients who come to the emergency room to see a doctor are normal people. The really serious ones have long been pushed to the emergency ward, and the less serious ones are just waiting outside.

Wang ZiHao asked the nurse to inform Sister Qin they were there and the two of them stood outside.

After waiting for a few minutes, a pair of young girls hurriedly walked in through the door. One of them was covering her mouth with a weird expression. The other was sweating, grabbed a nurse and asked: “My friend’s tongue was pierced, is there a doctor?”

The  nurse was stunned: “Tongue was pierced?”

The girl: “Yes, while eating she was pierced by a lobster shell and she shed a lot of blood!”

Nurse: “There is no oral surgeon at the moment so I will call one in to take a look. Wait a minute.”

The nurse was just about to leave when Wang ZiHao said: “I’m doing a rotation in the oral surgery department this month.”

The little nurse turned to look at him, and then looked at the name tag hanging on his neck: “Doctor Wang, you can take a look then.” Wang ZiHao coldly walked over with a face that said ‘Don’t get too close to me’. He said to the girl who was covering her mouth: “Open your mouth and let me see.”

Lian Xi looked at the girl curiously.

The girl had red eyes and opened her mouth.

Wang ZiHao: “Pull out your tongue.”

The girl opened her mouth obediently and stretched her tongue out .

Wang ZiHao looked for a few seconds.

“It’s okay, go home.”

Two girls: “???”

Wang ZiHao: “I said it’s okay, go home.”

One of the girls hesitated: “Doctor, is it really okay? My friend shed a lot of blood, you should give her some medicine.”

Wang ZiHao smiled coldly: “You’re lucky you came early. If you came two minutes later the wound would have closed on it’s own.”

Girls: “…”

The little nurse and Lian Xi on the side: “Pfft.”

As the two girls walked out, they complained to each other.

“I told you I can’t see the wound anymore. I told you in the taxi the wound is gone!”

“But I shed a lot of blood Yuanyuan, didn’t you see! I spat out into the bowl!”

The cold faced doctor had a disdainful air: “The tongue is one of the fastest self-healing organs in the human body. Saliva also has a disinfection effect. A waste of time. “

Lian Xi turned his head to look at the poisonous-tongued doctor and asked: “What about biting your tongue to committ suicide?”

Wang ZiHao: “Hehe, stupid.”

Lian Xi: “…”

This person was quite interesting.

Ten minutes later, Sister Qin finally finished her work and walked over. She looked at what Lian Xi was holding and smiled: “I could have just told you the address. You can go directly, there’s no need to come here to find me.”

Wang Zihao: “He wanted to thank you in person.”

Lian Xi quickly passed the things over: “Thank you, Sister Qin.”

Sister Qin waved her hand: “It’s all trivial.”

He smoothly got the old nurse’s contact information from Sister Qin. Without further ado, Lian Xi said goodbye to Dr. Wang and Sister Qin. He took a taxi to find the old nurse.

According to Sister Qin, she asked several old colleagues and finally determined that there were four nurses on duty the day Lian Xi was born. The three had no impression of him at all and only one named “Sister Hong” said that she still remembered him. If Lian Xi wanted to talk to her, Sister Qin could give her address to Lian Xi.

Wang Zihao was a little surprised: “Each nurse has delivered so many people and they actually remember you? What happened when you were born?”

Lian Xi casually made up a reason: “My mother had dystocia at the time.”

Wang ZiHao nodded and didn’t ask any more.

On the way to the old nurse’s house, Lian Xi pressed the phone number given by Sister Qin and called.

The phone rang but no one answered.

Lian Xi felt strange. After taking a taxi to the gate of the community, he got out of the car and asked someone for directions. He found the residential building where Sister Hong lived.

This is an old community built in the last century.

There were no elevators and all were six-story affordable housing. There were a lot of people in the community, and many aunts and grandpas moved a chair to sit on the side of the road and chat in the shade. Obviously, most of the residents in this community are of the same age as retired elderly people.

There is a small square in the middle of the community and a deafening “Dancing Girl” music is noisily playing. Dozens of grandpas and aunts were wearing white exercise clothes, holding big red dancing fans and dancing square dances.

Lian Xi covered his ears and went into Sister Hong’s building. He then climbed upstairs and knocked on the door. However, he knocked for a long time and no one opened the door.

“Is anyone home?”

No one responded.

The square dance music downstairs made his brain hurt. He frowned and waited for another ten minutes.

It seems that this person is not at home.

Sighing, Lian Xi turned around to leave. As soon as he came downstairs, suddenly, his eyes met an old lady wearing a training suit and holding a red dancing fan at the top of the stairs.

Lian Xi was stunned and turned his body sideways to let the other party go first.

The old lady passed by him and went upstairs.

When Lian Xi continued to go downstairs, the old lady turned her head and said, “Eh young man, why were you standing in front of my door just now?”

Lian Xi turned around: “Sister Hong?”

The old lady’s eyes lit up, “You know me? Who are you?”

They entered the room and Sister Hong made him a cup of hot tea.

Sister Hong laughed: “You are Xiao Lian ba. Don’t call Sister Hong, Xiao-Qin and others who call me sister are about my age. But I’m the same age as your grandfather so how can you call me sister, it’s better to call me grandma.”

Lian Xi: “…”

I think I’d rather call you sister.

But he keenly noticed one thing: “Do you know my grandfather?”

Sister Hong smiled: “Of course, otherwise why else would I ask them to give you my address? Your grandfather and I are fellow villagers, and we went to elementary school together.” As she recalled the past decades, the gray-haired old lady didn’t look old at all but was full of energy: “Your grandfather was the only one in the class who had a bicycle at home at that time. He was really rich.”

Lian Xi thought: Unfortunately my grandfather quickly fell into poverty after. He was so poor he barely had anything.

Unexpectedly, Sister Hong was an old friend of Grandpa’s and Lian Xi relaxed a lot at once. No wonder Sister Hong remembered him and gave him a bell. Lian Xi: “I just wanted to ask one thing. This whole time I’ve had a bell. My dad said you gave me a bell when I was born. I wonder if you remember it?” {For some reason when I previously translated it, I may have translated the nurse as “he”, I assume because author used the male version of “ta” but apparently it’s a woman now, or maybe she just never specified. Anyway it’s a she.}

Sister Hong was stunned: “Bell?”

Lian Xi raised his left hand and shook his wrist lightly. The simple and elegant bronze bell shook slightly in the air but made no sound. “It’s this bell, don’t you remember?”

Sister Hong’s expression suddenly became weird. The old lady looked at Lian Xi with a strange look. After a while, she got up, ran to the living room shelf and picked up an old book.

“It’s been more than twenty years, I’d almost forgotten about it. You’ve grown up like this.”

Lian Xi sat upright: “Do you remember now?”

“Remember, how could I not remember? Xiao-Lian, have you seen this book before?”

Lian Xi lowered his head and glanced at the book “A Dream of Red Mansions”. “I have read it.”

Sister Hong: “I read this book when I was young and I took it out this year to look . It’s really hard to understand. But I think of you when I see it. Do you know Jia BaoYu?” {Main male character of Dream of Red Mansions. His name means “holding/hugging jade”}

Lian Xi suddenly felt an odd premonition in his heart: “Yes…”

Sister Hong said with emotion: “I told your grandfather back then that Jia BaoYu was born holding a jade, so that’s why his name is Jia BaoYu. Your grandfather named you but what kind of name was that? You were born holding a bell so your name should have been Lian LinDang!” {LinDang=Bell.}

Lian Xi: “?!”

I was born holding a bell?

What do you mean I was born holding a bell?

… No wait a minute, what kind of name is Lian LinDang! {Really dumb sounding name lol.}
