Chapter 36

After sending (tricking) the little WuXi ghost official away, the sky was just getting bright.

With the last bit of dark night air that had not yet dissipated, Lian Xi and Lie Chen continued to use the golden light to guide them and caught two more ghosts.

But there is one thing that was bothering Lian Xi: “That kid just now said that he was a human and he seems to be in junior high school at most. The underworld actually employs child labor? Such a small child can be a reaper?”

Lie Chen: “Why can’t they?”

Lian Xi: “???? What are the criteria for choosing ghost officials? How did such a small child get chosen?”

President Lie took a deep look at Lian Xi and with an expression of “you are clearly not serious about your work”, he opened the reaper record and dangled in the face of his lazy colleague.

“Look at the reaper criterion.”

Lian Xi obediently accepted the Black Reaper record and looked at it.

He skipped a lot of nonsense in the front and looked directly at the text.

The first rule of reaper: “Heaven and earth has a pathway, but hell hath no door.”

Lian Xi: “???”

He turned his head and stared at the Black Reaper several times. The latter was completely unmoved as if not at all conscious or guilty about his plagiarizing.

Okay fine, let me take a look at the second criterion: “A mundane life, a predetermined death, knows the difference between right and wrong, understands the law.” Beneath it, there was also a line of small print: “Rules must be adhered to and when something is not the reaper’s responsibility, fate must not be twisted.”

Lian Xi understood it.

The first criteria is just a general outline.

There is a way of heaven and earth: Both heaven and earth have their own corresponding laws.

Hell hath no door: The underworld did not have a door and it didn’t have a pathway for ghosts. If ghosts became lost in the world of the living, they would need a reaper to guide them to send them into the underworld.

As for the second criteria it referred to the fact that when a person died, the merits and demerits they had gathered in their life were already set. The ghost officials couldn’t interfere and the underworld naturally has its own laws and methods to judge these people. The reapers couldn’t interfere with their fates and their only duty was to guide them to the underworld and send them into reincarnation.

The next few criterion all talked about rules that reapers needed to follow.

Until criteria no 32.

After reading the 32nd criteria carefully, Lian Xi closed the reaper record: “So, that little ghost official should be the heir chosen by the previous WuXi ghost official?”

Lie Chen: “Yeah.”

Lian Xi: ” He is only thirteen or fourteen years old…”

Lie Chen: “That’s why his ability is poor and he’s ranked last.”

Lian Xi: “…”

If you bully the kids like this again, be careful that the little ghost official will run back and scold you now!

Lian Xi: “But having said that, there should be two ghost officials in Wuxi, black and white. How come we only met one.”

Naturally, no one could answer him.

In fact, at the moment when WuXi’s little ghost official appeared, Lian Xi snorted in his heart and an inexplicable thought flashed through his mind: Judging from his age, he should have also been this old when he became a white reaper. But then he thought: No, that’s not right. I’m not actually a reaper!

The evidence for this is conclusive. First of all, his bronze bells was not a ghost official’s weapon and could not create shielding magnetic fields.

Secondly, if the current white reaper in SuZhou City was appointed by the previous white reaper, resulting in the underworld not sending anyone up to take over the shift, then if it were really Lian Xi then he must have seen the previous white reaper when he was a child. He would have received some kind of recognition or gift from the other party, denoting that he was being accepted as a disciple or something.

But he didn’t.

Finally, the most important thing is…

His dad is definitely not gay!

So their family definitely were not a hereditary family of reapers!

Early in the morning, the daylight was bright and the breakfast stalls on the roadside were all set up.

Lian Xi: “Would you like some breakfast?”

Lie Chen looked at the fried dough sticks and soy milk on the breakfast stalls in the distance and nodded gently.

After being busy all night, SuZhou’s City’s two reapers sat silently on the side of the road and began to eat breakfast, like a pair of ordinary humans.

Of course Lian Xi didn’t know that at this moment, some distance away, WuXi’s little ghost official took the subway and then transferred to the high-speed rail. He finally got back to WuXi. Just as he got out of  the train station, the tired-looking boy rubbed his eyes and yawned because he hadn’t slept all night. He got on the bus going home, opened the reaper record and then….

The little boy: “?!”

The ghost performance ranking of the month (Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai)

24th place, SuZhou City, Jiangsu Province with a performance of 5,123 points.

25th’s place WuXi, Jiangsu Province, with a performance of 4,510 points.

“Ahhhh I went all the way for nothing! I wasted a whole night when I could have been gaining points and the gap is even greater now!”

This earth-shattering loud cry of grief woke up the groggy office worker who was the only other person dozing on the bus. The office worker looked up blankly and the little boy’s face flushed. He  whispered “Excuse me” and got off as soon as the bus arrived at his stop.

“No, why the gap is getting bigger and bigger, I can’t catch up at all.”

The boy gritted his teeth, thought for a long time, and then made a call. Soon, the phone was connected and it was a crisp female voice.

“Hello, why are you calling me so early?”

The boy: “What are you doing! Where are you and when are you coming back?!”

The crisp female voice: “What’s wrong. I’m in HengDian, my family’s QiQi recently picked up a TV series so I’m here to see him, don’t you know?”

The boy snorted: “Stinky vixen, what QiQi! How do you have time to chase stars right now, haven’t you seen this month’s performance rankings?”

“I saw it. I was just about to ask you. What did you do last night, your points didn’t increase at all. Are you lazy?”

The boy stared in shock, “I’m lazy?! It’s obviously you running all over the country every day chasing stars and not working. Why don’t you complain about yourself first!”

The crisp female voice chuckled: “What you said is wrong kid, think about it. The logic should be like this. Due to some of my own matters, I can’t stay in Wuxi. If I’m not in WuXi, I definitely can’t catch ghosts. But you are different. You have been in Wuxi. You have the conditions to catch ghosts but you didn’t catch them. Then I am objectively allowed to say you’re lazy and you calling me lazy is subjective. Think about it.”

Boy: “???”

Although he knows there is something wrong with this statement, it seems that there is no way to refute it.

The boy said coldly: “I don’t care. Anyway, you are not allowed to chase stars. Come back quickly and chase ghosts!”

“I know, I know! Ah! QiQi is coming out from the car, I’m hanging up!!”

There was a busy beeping sound from the phone.

Boy: “Hello? Hello!”

Putting down the phone, the boy was very depressed and kicked the pebble on the ground with anger: “Are you still a human!” Thinking about it, “Well, she’s really not a human, she’s a vixen. A stinky fox demon!”

At the same time, at the HengDian Film and Television City in JinHua, ZheJiang Province.

In front of the luxurious and intricately constructed Ming and Qing Dynasty film backdrop, the crew’s security guards put up the railings to prevent enthusiastic fans from rushing into the studio. A group of beautiful young girls held LED light boards and cartoon image banners in their hands. They craned their necks excitedly and looked into the film and television base.

In the middle of this group of fans, there was a little girl with big eyes and a ponytail. She held a banner that said “QiQi fly with ease, us WeiQi will forever be with you!” in her hand. Her eyes were surprisingly bright and she stared without blinking at the car not far away.

Finally, the car door opened and the handsome and suave looking actor got out of the car and waved to the fans.

“Ohhhhhhhhhhhh!”

“My QiQi!”

“Lin SiQi, Mother loves you forever!”

The little girl with the ponytail’s roar was full of energy. Her yell went straight up into the sky, shaking the entire crowd of fans into silence for a second. The handsome actor was also stunned. He glanced at her, then smiled and waved.

The little girl with ponytails: “Ahh I’m dead!”

Behind her, a fluffy fox’s tail dangled slightly in the crowd and then disappeared in an instant.

The days of live broadcasting at night and catching ghosts in the early hours of the morning continued to pass by.

The day after Su Jiao left, Lian Xi sent him a WeChat message, asking him if there was an accident at home and when he would be back.

Su Jiao vaguely replied, “My shishu is gone, I’m going to go look for him. I’ll talk to you again next month.” After that he didn’t reply again.

In a blink, a week passed.

On the last day of September, Lian Xi’s eyes widened, staring at the performance rankings. This month, his performance with Lie Chen is more than 8,000 points, and WuXi’s little ghost official is sitting at just over 6,000 points. Not surprisingly, WuXi was last and he and Lie Chen were sitting firmly at second to last. As for the third from the bottom, JinHua’s ghost official’s performance is more than 12,000 points, which should be impossible to exceed.

However, one also cannot give up.

Lian Xi looked at his colleague seriously: “I won’t do a live broadcast tonight. Let’s go to catch ghosts early and leave at six o’clock.”

President Lie was also extremely serious and nodded: “Yeah.”

Success or failure in life and death, it can be determined in one move!

Lian Xi: “I will go out at noon and come back to pick you up at night to catch ghosts.”

Lie Chen: “Okay.”

On the last day of the ranking, every second counts. Even Lian Xi walked faster than usual. Originally, he planned to go out to catch ghosts after eating at noon but Dr. Wang said on WeChat last week that he had time at noon today, so Lian Xi could only give up his plan to go out to catch ghosts in broad daylight.

He wants to invite Dr. Wang to dinner.

Although Lian Xi is not good at talking, he is not ignorant about the world.

No one who grew up in an orphanage would look down on other people.

Dr. Wang helped him so much and helped him find Sister Hong who delivered him as a baby. It was only right to invite Dr. Wang out to dinner.

Early in the morning, Lian Xi changed clothes and opened WeChat.

[Lian Xi: Dr. Wang, shall I go directly to your hospital to see you at noon? Should we decide on a location? There is a good hot pot restaurant in the center of SuZhou City and it is quite close to your hospital. Should we go there? ]

After waiting for five minutes, Lian Xi did not get a reply.

[Doctor Wang, are you busy? ]

Another half an hour passed.

Seeing that it was almost noon, Lian Xi thought for a while and directly dialed Dr. Wang’s number.

“It’s switched off?”

Lian Xi frowned. After thinking for a moment, he found the WeChat account of his old classmate.

[Lian Xi: Zhao Wei, do you remember that last time I asked you to help me find a classmate from the medical school for help and you contacted Dr. Wang ZiHao for me? At noon today, I had an appointment with him to invite him to eat to thank him. But now I can’t contact him. Can you contact him? ]

Before long, the old classmate replied.

[Zhao Wei: Wang ZiHao? OK, then I will ask for you. ]

Ten minutes have passed.

[Zhao Wei: I asked a classmate from the medical school, who was also doing an internship with Wang ZiHao at Yuan Hospital. She said that Wang ZiHao suddenly fell ill yesterday and has been admitted to the hospital. ]

Lian Xi was taken aback.

[Lian Xi: OK, thank you. Then I will go to the hospital to see him. ]

Dr. Wang was actually sick?

Even if he was sick, did he need to switch off his phone?

After thinking about it for a long while, Lian Xi still didn’t have any clues. But since Dr. Wang is sick, he should visit him.

Lian Xi took a taxi to Yuan Hospital.

He bought a fruit basket from the fruit shop at the entrance of the hospital and walked into the hospital carrying the fruit basket.

The first floor of the outpatient hall of the hospital was full of people who came to see a doctor. The voice was noisy and the flow of people surged around him. He looked around with the fruit basket and walked to the information desk: “Hello, I want to find a doctor, he seems to be from the oral surgery department. He was sick yesterday so I came to visit him. “

The young nurse on duty asked: “You come to visit a patient? Then you should go directly to the inpatient department.”

Lian Xi: “I can’t get through to his mobile. Maybe he forgot to charge it. I don’t know which ward he is in. I just thought, do you know an intern called Wang ZiHao from the Department of Oral Surgery? What illness does he have and where can I find him?”

The little nurse thought for a while: “I really don’t know about this. Then, then why don’t you go to the oral surgery department and ask there. It’s on the second floor.”

“Thank you.”

He went through the crowd, up to the second floor to the oral surgery department.

Lian Xi was holding the fruit basket and was about to ask the nurse on duty if he knew about Dr. Wang’s condition. Before he took two steps, a surprised voice suddenly came from behind him: “Lian Xi?”

Lian Xi turned around.

Under the bright light, the intern wearing a mask was holding a medical record book in his hand and looked at him in surprise.

Wang ZiHao took off his mask: “Why are you here?”

Lian Xi looked at him up and down.

His face was pale and he did indeed look a little sluggish and uncomfortable.

Lian Xi: “We made an appointment for dinner at noon today but I couldn’t get in touch with you so I asked Zhao Wei about the situation. As a result, Zhao Wei said that you were sick so I came to see you, Dr. Wang.”

Wang ZiHao “Yes, I forgot we were going to eat together. I’m too busy today so I don’t have time.”

Lian Xi said with a smile: “That’s okay, I’ll leave the fruit basket here. Are you okay? You don’t look good.”

Wang ZiHao: “It’s nothing, I caught a cold last week and it got worse over the last few days. Let’s wait until next month to eat together, we can talk about it when I come back from National Day.”

Lian Xi: “OK.”

Wang ZiHao: ” I’m still busy so I won’t send you off.”

“Okay, it’s okay, I’ll go by myself. I’ll  ask you out again next time.”

The young and indifferent intern nodded, put his mask on again then put his hands in his pockets and turned to walk away. The crowd closed around him.

Lian Xi put the fruit basket in front of the nurse’s station and started heading downstairs.

Since I can’t eat lunch with Dr. Wang, I’ll just go home directly, pick up the Black Reaper and go out to catch ghosts!

It’s a good plan.

Lian Xi was thinking about where to go to catch ghosts today. He turned on his phone while lowering his head, ready to call for a taxi. However, just when he reached the hospital entrance, a sudden female voice full of doubts came from behind him: “You are that…. Xiao-Wang’s friend?”

Lian Xi stopped and looked up: “Sister Qin?”

It was indeed Sister Qin who helped Lian Xi find the nurse who delivered him back then.

This old nurse in the obstetrics and gynecology department walked over with a box of medical equipment in her hand. She looked at Lian Xi and sighed: “Are you here to see Xiao-Wang?”

Lian Xi: “Yes.”

“Oh, what kind of illness do you think it is? It’s so strange. He was fine yesterday morning but suddenly in the afternoon he fell ill.”

Lian Xi was stunned and a light flashed through his mind.

Sister Qin continued: “Xiao-Wang is still so young. I heard that his parents are all farmers in the country. They finally produced a graduate student and a big doctor. As a result, he is now in the ICU before he even passed his internship period.”

Lian Xi frowned. “Sister Qin, what do you mean? Are you saying that Dr. Wang is in a very bad condition now?”

Sister Qin asked in surprise, “Didn’t you come to see him? I heard from the oral surgery department that Xiao-Wang was pushed into the operating room last night and was in a critical condition all night. This morning he was admitted into intensive care and never woke up. His condition is very serious and he may not be able to survive the night.”

Lian Xi opened his eyes wide and his fingers trembled slightly.

Then…who was it he had seen just now?
