Chapter 5 – Live-streaming matters

Chapter 5

On the phone, the man’s voice was calm and confident. He said, “It’s like this. Last year do you remember submitting a resume to our company?”

Due to the popularity of 4G networks, live streaming has become a common form of entertainment in modern life.

New and fresh live streaming platforms were always springing up.

The platform called DouYa was one of the most famous ones.

After the emergence of such live streaming platforms, business people also sniffed out a new business opportunity. They began to build guilds. When a live-streamer joined a guild, he could obtain support and promotion from the guild. Just like when a star joined an entertainment company, only with the help of the company could they gain enough exposure to become famous.

Now that the man mentioned it, Lian Xi actually did indeed remember sending a private message to some of the larger live streaming associations last year. Of course his private message sank like a stone to the bottom of the sea and no guild bothered to respond to him.

Among the ones he contacted was the Gem Guild.

{T/N: Hello, I just want to mention that I’m an old fashioned person so I don’t know much about live-streaming so I might get some of the terms wrong.}

Lian Xi: “Do you need something?”

The man laughed: “I’m one of the people in charge of the Gem Guild and I also manage live streamers. I want to invite you to join our guild.”

Lian Xi: “…..”

Something good like this can actually happen?!!!

“I had a  look and saw you only have 1W8 fans right now on DouYa. The guild generally gives a monthly signing fee of 3000 to live-streamers at that fan level, however if I’m your manager, I can increase that to 5000.”

Lian Xi suddenly calmed down.

After a guild signs a host, it would give them a “basic salary” each month but at the same time if the host received a gift from their fans, the guild would split part of it.

Right now Lian Xi barely receives any gifts each month but the Gem Guild wanted to directly give him a 5000 fee. That meant that every month he live-streamed, regardless if anyone was watching, he would get 5000 yuan.

There was no such thing as a free lunch in this world.

Lian Xi: “Why are you looking for me?”

“What?”

“I have very few fans and I don’t receive many gifts…. Last year you ignored me, why are you suddenly willing to sign me now?”

The man on the other end of the line laughed softly. “Of course I have requirements too. Right now you’re live-streaming King’s Glory, but from my research, you initially live-streamed horror games for a while. If you sign up, we want to switch back to playing horror games. Other than that, we also hope you can do some outdoor live broadcasts.”

Lian Xi was suspicious: “I’m not sure I understand what you mean.”

The man smiled: “Regarding the live broadcast, you can have a look around your surroundings and the city you live in. Find places with urban legends or places where something violent has happened. You can take the fans to go there and have a look. For example… ChangAn Fan’s dormitory building.”

Lian Xi was shocked: “How did you know?!”

In a high-end apartment in a bustling city, a young man wearing silver glasses raised the corners of his lips in a smile. His eyes were sharp. He stared at Lian Xi’s resume on his computer screen and his eyes hovered on the contact address column.

He didn’t beat around the bush and said, “Truthfully ‘Lian Cheng’, I discovered last week that there was a live streamer broadcasting very near Su City’s 2.07 Extraordinary Robbery and Murder Case. I look through every resume anyone has ever sent me so obviously I’ve seen yours before too. After Su City’s Fan Factory Murderer hit the news, I immediately remembered that among the private messages sent to me, there was one that had the contact address being the fan factory’s dormitory. I looked for a week and finally found your private message. You also didn’t disappoint me, not only do you live there but you actually live in one of the units where a murder occurred.”

“Lian Cheng, this is your golden opportunity to make it!”

“So far, I haven’t seen your live feed yet so I don’t know what your gameplay level is. However you’ve been live streaming for a year and you haven’t gotten famous. This means that your playing level is probably not adequate.”

“You really shouldn’t live stream King’s Glory, you should be a supernatural game host! You should be the kind of host who broadcasts directly from supernatural places.”

“I’ll send the contract to you tomorrow. Right now it’s the best time for you. The popularity of the fan factory’s case hasn’t dropped yet. After you sign up to your guild, I will immediately give you the best promotion. I’ll tell everyone that you’re the only person living in the fourth floor where the murder occured.”

“Not only that, but you’ve even met the murderer before.”

“You can do half a month of live broadcasts in a row. Just talk about your personal experience of the fan factory murder case. I will also do some manipulation and tie you and the murder closely together in the live streaming community. As long as there’s any bit of news about the case, for example the murderer’s trial or retrial, it will mean a golden opportunity for you!”

“Lian Cheng, do you know how famous you’ll become?”

“Not only Su City’s fan case. In the future every time there’s a vicious murder case, you can give your opinion about it as someone who’s personally experienced a murder before.”

“In the entire live streaming community, only you have this qualification. This is an advantage that no one else can match!”

“….. Lian Cheng?”

“Hey, are you listening?”

Lian Xi: “Sorry, I don’t want to sign right now. Thank you.”

“What? Hey…..!”

Lian Xi hung up directly.

The next minute, the top manager Wanderer called back again.

Lian Xi didn’t do the same thing as with the real estate agent which was to hang up repeatedly. He simply blacklisted the phone number.

Wanderer: “…..”

F*ck!

Was this guy a freaking idiot?

Didn’t he want to earn money?

On the other side, the young man who had just finished moving home warmed down his arms and feet, then lay comfortably on his couch. He lay there lazily for a while, and suddenly the man’s words echoed in his mind.

“Personally experienced a murder?”

“Can I count?”

The real people who had experienced the murder were those victims who died 23 years ago.

It was those victim’s families who had lost their loved ones 23 years ago and who had been immersed in an abyss of pain and loss, unable to extricate themselves.

If a real person who had experienced the murder picked up a phone call like that, they wouldn’t just blacklist the number, they would probably swear, curse and then directly rock up at Wanderer’s door and send him a “big gift” in the form of a trip to the hospital.

Soon he threw Wanderer into the back of his mind. When it got to night-time, it was Lian Xi’s fixed broadcasting time.

At 8PM, Lian Xi opened his live stream.

There was no camera showing his face and there were no excess words.

He just played the game and live streamed it.

After fifteen minutes, there was a familiar fan that appeared.

“Hey, the host is back today? I didn’t see your live stream the last two days.”

Lian Xi just happened to make a three-kill streak at this time. He saw this message and responded, “En, I was moving over the last two days so I didn’t live-stream.”

After saying that, the broadcast returned to silence.

Lian Xi silently played the game, killed people and destroyed towers.

He didn’t have many fans, just seven or eight. They watched silently and didn’t make a noise. Or maybe they had just had it open in the background and were doing other things.

“Does the host take task requests?”

{T/N: Err… so I also don’t know much about online games. I believe what they’re maybe asking is to pay him to play on their behalf, either to get points or complete a mission or something. Any readers who knows more about it can let me know.}

Lian Xi got interested: “Which hero?”

“Zhu GeLiang.”

“It’s a bit expensive. Message me privately ba.”

Fan’s gifts were important to a young host like Lian Xi, but if he really relied on it to eat then he would have starved to death long ago.

What he really does to make money is to help people play games.

That is a ghost player or team mate. {T/N: Dunno how to translate this, I think it means he plays for them, like a ghost writer would write for someone else. But I’m not sure to be honest haha, I only play the old-fashioned offline, single player games.}

Since someone brought up this topic, the live broadcast room became a little more lively.

[Doesn’t this host play Sun ShangXiang? He can also play Zhu GeLiang?]

[Bro, is this your first time watching this live broadcast? Although this host doesn’t talk much and is a mute player, his skills aren’t bad. He can play all four of the top strategists: Zhu GeLiang, Sun ShangXiang, Ma Chao and Zhao Yun. He’s a Three Kingdom Killer.]

Lian Xi kept one eye on the game and one eye on the messages on the screen.

He didn’t say anything out loud, but in his heart he was thinking-

Thanks for the compliment, I am strong.

It’s easy to play the strategists, you only need hands.

But as for being a “mute player”…

You’re the one whose mute! Your whole family is mute ba!

With a lot of thoughts in his heart, this mute host opened another round of games.

Since Lian Xi didn’t talk, the fans in his broadcast didn’t take any notice of him, and began talking among themselves.

[Something happened in the neighbouring major game broadcast room. Bros, have you seen?]

[It went on the top trending list yesterday. Bro, have you been living under a rock on Mars? How come you only realized now?]

Lian Xi paused.

I don’t know ah.

Originally he wanted to eavesdrop on these two fans’ chat a little bit more but unfortunately they stopped talking about it, and went back to talking about Lian Xi’s playing skills.

Lian Xi: “……”

After he finished his live stream he would go and take a look himself.

That’s what he intended to do, but once he finished the broadcast he completely forgot about it. Instead he went to take a shower then went to sleep.

…..

His life returned to peacefulness.

Although that super manager Wanderer didn’t give up.

That day Lian Xi blacklisted his phone number, but the next day he actually used a new number to call. Once Lian Xi heard his voice, he didn’t even pause before hanging up and blacklisting it again.

Wanderer: “F***!”

Lian Xi also pretended he hadn’t seen the private messages.

Of course it would be good to be able to sign up to a large guild, but he didn’t want to earn money using other people’s blood and misfortune.

The best thing about being an online live steamer was if  you didn’t want to see someone, they couldn’t find you.

After graduating college, the reason tha Lian Xi didn’t go to find a job but instead became a live streamer was because this was a career in which he didn’t have to come into contact with many people.

He didn’t need to talk to anyone.

And so he couldn’t curse anyone.

Being a host was good, he didn’t need to talk and could just silently play games and occasionally get paid to play something for someone. He could peacefully and quietly pass his life like this.

The next evening, Lian Xi went out to the convenience store outside his small community to buy some cans of Coke. He carried the plastic bag and went back up the lift. When he came out, he was digging through his pocket for his keys while thinking about what kind of takeaway he should order that night. Suddenly he stopped. Standing in front of his home was a strange man. Lian Xi stared dumbly at him.

Lian Xi wasn’t the only one surprised. Wanderer was shocked too.

His gaze swept over the young man’s bright and delicate brows then slowly moved over his striking and beautiful face. He looked up and down several times. Wanderer opened his mouth but momentarily couldn’t speak.

What the?!

That 18,000 level little host Lian Cheng actually looked like this?!

The next moment his eyes flashed with light. Originally he only wanted to make one last attempt and if he rejected it, then fine whatever. However right now he made the decision that he must prevail.

He had to sign him!

He would definitely explode with fame!

Next time he live streamed he would definitely have to turn on his camera!

This had to be a must in the contract!

Wanderer pushed his glasses and exposed a mature and successful man’s smile: “Are you Lian Cheng?”

“You are?”

“I’m Wanderer.”

“…..”

“Gem Guild’s Super Manager.”

“…..”

I remember.

Lian Xi gazed at him calmly, then asked, “How do you know where I live?”

He had only moved for a week. Even Uncle Li didn’t know where he lived, so how did this super manager know?

Wanderer smiled confidently. “Didn’t you answer a courier’s phone call at noon today?”

Lian Xi: “??? Huh?”

Wanderer: “That was my friend calling you. He asked you to tell him your address so he could send a courier to you.”

Lian Xi: “…..”

There were some people you really couldn’t avoid ah!

Wanderer: “Don’t you think it’s fate? Actually, I’m also from Su City. If you sign onto our guild, I can also sign a separate management contact with you. I’m very confident that I can make you famous. Don’t reject me, do you know how many hosts I have under me? The No 1 brother on DouYa, the major host of King’s Glory PKing, do you know him? I was the one who made him famous. And also XingXiu’s host WanZai, I also made him famous. Other than these two major hosts, I also manage Six Gun, Hydrogen, Brother Cool Leg…”

“What do you think, Lian Cheng?”

Without a single hesitation Lian Xi said expressionlessly, “Please move aside. I’m going in.”

Wanderer raised his eyebrow. He reached out to stop him, “Do you know how much money Hydrogen earns every month?”

“I don’t know.”

“A million at least.”

“…..????”

The f**k?!!

Lian Xi raised his head to look at Wanderer. Wanderer laughed confidently in his heart.

“As for the signing fee, I’ll make the decision and give you 300,000 a month. This is just the start. Once you’ve become famous, we can change the contract any time.”

“What do you think? I have 10,000 no, 100,000 ways to make you famous!”

“….”

Lian Xi was almost convinced!

He clutched his keys and using all of his willpower, managed to grate out three words.

“Please move aside.”

Wanderer’s eyes went dark: “Hydrogen earned 1.3 million last month! This is the money he earned himself, not including the platform and the guild’s portion!”

“If you are willing to participate in offline events, I can also arrange for you to enter the entertainment circle! My family works in entertainment, I have contacts!”

“Hey, Lian Cheng!”

The man reached out to stop him again.

At this time, there was a “ka-da” sound. The door opposite them opened a crack.

A young man stood there peeking at Lian Xi and Wanderer. His gaze wandered around and landed on Lian Xi. “Hey brother, do you need help? Are you the new neighbour that moved in?”

Lian Xi: “Er….”

Wanderer frowned: “What’s wrong with you, this has nothing to do with you.”

The young man grunted then opened the door completely. The next minute, seven energetic young men appeared behind him.

Wanderer: “…..”

He cursed in his heart but Wanderer didn’t know what to say. So he just stuffed his business card into Lian Xi’s hand.

He seriously stared at Lian Xi then said slowly, “Think carefully about it. You will never get an opportunity like this again in your life!”

After that he turned to leave.

Lian Xi looked at the business card in his hand then threw it casually into the plastic bag from the convenience store. He looked opposite his door and said smiling, “Many thanks.”

The first young man waved his hands. With a grin he said, “No big deal! What was that guy doing? Was he chasing a debt or doing door-to-door sales? Even before you came home, he was standing out here. I just knew he was up to no good.”

Lian Xi thought about it: “Door-to-door sales.”

The young man said to his friends, “Didn’t I say that? I knew it!”

Lian Xi looked at them and said, “Are you all… sharing one place?”

After he said that, the group of eight young men all opened their eyes wide. The leader clasped his hands together and said with a begging expression, “Good bro, us brothers came to Su City to find a job. Don’t report us please. We don’t talk loud and we don’t make a lot of noise. Look, you’ve been living here for a week, have we ever been noisy?”

Lian Xi smiled, “Don’t worry, I was just asking casually.”

It was true. He’d been living here a week and never heard any noise from opposite him.

It was rare that a large group renting together weren’t loud, but it wasn’t impossible. If it didn’t disrupt his lifestyle, then Lian Xi didn’t mind.

But he suddenly thought of something: “You guys should be careful about the electricity, don’t get noticed.”

The young man smiled. “We haven’t changed the circuit, don’t worry. In the future, come and visit us! We welcome you to come over and play.”

“Okay.”

***

July in Su City was boiling hot.

Once evening set in, the city was bustling and noisy. The city lights turned the night sky into crimson colors.

Wanderer walked out of the small community’s gate. He waited five minutes to find a DiDi. {T/N: Like uber.}

Irritably he fidgeted with hs necktie and muttered to himself, “Dumb idiot who doesn’t want to earn money, go ahead and live a lifetime of poverty in this poor little community!”

The DiDi driver looked at him in the rearview mirror.

Xu Lang, one of Gem Guild’s super managers. His ID was Wandering.

Although he swore, however Xu Lang hadn’t given up on signing Lian Xi.

That face was even enough for the entertainment circle. And he had personally experienced the fan factory’s muder case.

If he was there, Lian Xi definitely could get famous and it would be very, very famous.

Xu Lang was just thinking about how to convince Lian Xi when suddenly his mobile rang. Looking at the flashing name on the screen, he grunted then answered the phone. But once it connected, he was the one who was surprised.

“Why are you crying? Are you an idiot, a big man calling me to cry?”

“…..”

“Who died?”

“That fan killed herself because of you?!”

“F*ck! That Rabbit Fur?”

“Who cares if she’s called Rabbit Fur or Cat Fur or Dog Fur! Is she actually dead?’

“F**! Don’t cry, she’s already dead, what’s the point of you crying!”

His heart was a mess but suddenly he calmed down.

His fingers gently held the phone case and he spoke calmly and cooly.

“Didn’t you already break up half a month ago? So what does her death have to do with you? Right now, leave the hospital immediately and go home and turn on your computer. Don’t forget that tonight at 7PM you still have a live broadcast.”

“Do you want to be late?”
