Chapter 7 – I have a friend…

In the dim and quiet corridor, a young man in a white T-shirt silently touched the bronze bell on his left wrist.

His fingers trembled gently.

Lian Xi didn’t blink as he looked at the person in front of him. He squeezed his fingers and prepared to apply pressure and ring the bell.

Suddenly!

“Ding dong—”

Lian Xi paused. He turned his head and looked towards the elevator door.

The bright incandescent lights of the elevator flashed, illuminating the corridor.

Inside the elevator’s doorway, his short-of-stature housemate had one hand in his pocket and the other was holding a takeaway box. Su Jiao looked at Lian Xi and said with surprise, “You opened the door to greet me? How polite!” After saying that, he walked out of the elevator.

Lian Xi’s lips twitched. In the fluorescent light, he saw Wanderer’s soul pass Su Jiao, their shoulders brushing against each other, and walk into the elevator.

Su Jiao: “But now that I think about it, how… hey Lian Xi, how did you know I was coming back?”

The elevator door closed behind Su Jiao.

Just before it did, from the crack between the closing doors, Wanderer tilted his head and gave Lian Xi a twisted smile.

Lian Xi narrowed his eyes and looked at Su Jiao. “I was just going out.”

“Oh so you didn’t come to greet me ah…” Su Jiao muttered, then asked. “What are you going out for?”

Lian Xi: “I have business!”

After throwing down this sentence, Lian Xi rushed out to the elevator and pressed the button to go down. He saw that the elevator that Wanderer had taken had already reached the ground floor. After waiting five or six seconds, Lian Xi got in the next one. He hurried into the elevator and rushed to the ground floor.

He ran out of the door and looked around frantically.

***

There he was!

He saw a man wearing a western suit and stumbling forward with his head lowered. He was slowly moving towards the gate of the community.

His steps were extremely slow because both his legs were very stiff.

However he walked straight forward, as though he couldn’t see that there were cars on the road or that he was trampling on a flowerbed. This kind of blind approach caused him to run into a young girl who was running while listening to music.

The young girl was knocked abruptly and almost fell down. She swore, “Are you sick…” However her voice suddenly trailed off. She looked left then looked right but couldn’t see a single person. Suddenly her back went cold. “What the heck ah? Where’s the person….”

Feeling scared, the young girl ran off quickly.

Wanderer was knocked by her and finally showed a little bit of anger. He reached out to grab at the young girl’s clothes. “You haven’t apologized to me yet.”

However the young girl had already run far away.

Wanderer froze and tried to follow her. However his four limbs were extremely stiff so even if he tried to run, he was much slower than normal people. In his eyes he could only see that young girl who was running far ahead, and so he nearly ran into an old man who was going out to buy groceries. Seeing they were about to collide, Lian Xi immediately raised his left hand and prepared to shake the bell.

“If you don’t want him to die, then don’t move!”

His arm froze. Lian Xi turned around to look at the person who had spoken.

He saw his short roommate standing behind him.

The two people looked at each other.

Su Jiao’s eyes then moved to Wanderer who was gradually moving further away.

“This motherf*er is actually still alive!”

***

Under a gorgeous sunset, as the beautiful colors filled the sky, two handsome youths squatted beneath the shade of a tree on the side of the road. They were holding containers of coke from KFC and watching the people walk by on the street.

The passing pedestrians would turn their heads to look at them from time to time.

At first glance these two people looked quite handsome.

But at a second look, one was squatting while holding a container of Coke and was looking around randomly. He was definitely not a good person!

Wanderer’s soul was currently walking slowly across the street.

Other people couldn’t see him but they could touch him. The people who were “bumped” by him couldn’t get angry, they only felt terrified. Anyone who was hit by empty air would get scared enough their scalp tingled. However the extent of what Wanderer could do was “bump” people.

He walked around in a muddle-headed manner. Most of the time he seemed to be operating subconsciously. Occasionally he would get a little bit clear-headed but then he began to get numbed to bumping into people all the time.

“Let me introduce myself again. I’m Su Jiao, I’m from the ShanDong area. You understand right?”

Lian Xi: “…..”

I don’t understand!

Su Jiao raised his eyebrow: “Brother, you’re pretty brave. You actually put down roots in Su City. Don’t you want to change to another place to live?”

Thoughts revolved around in Lian Xi’s heart. He pretended to be calm and asked, “Why would I want to change to another place to live?”

Su Jiao was surprised. “Don’t you know what kind of damned place Su City is?”

Lian Xi said calmly: “I think it’s okay.”

Su Jiao: “….”

“Kneeling to the boss!” Su Jiao drank coke while blabbering. “Ai, when I got into Su City University’s graduate program, I was so sad I almost died. When it comes to my profession, Su City’s university’s program is ranked highly. So it’s a good choice for me. But when it really comes to living here, I feel quite nervous.”

Lian Xi pretended to be nonchalant and silently listened carefully.

Who expected Su Jiao to suddenly change the subject: “That’s right brother, do you know this fellow?”

Lian Xi: “….”

What’s wrong with all you people!

Every time you only let me eat half a melon!

Finish giving me the melon, then talk ma!!!

He scolded a lot in his heart but Lian Xi looked calm on the surface. He looked at Wanderer who was across the street and shook his head, “Can’t be considered familiar.”

Su Jiao tapped his chin. “Then it’s easier to take care of. You know what his situation is, right?”

“Approximately, yes.”

“If I didn’t stop you just before, then what were you going to do?”

Lian Xi glanced down at the bronze bell on the wrist and said faintly, “Shake it.”

Su Jiao followed his gaze and looked at the bronze bell on his wrist that gave off an antique atmosphere.

There were many people in the world with supernatural abilities. Most of them were involved in family enterprises. There were also those who had been trained in secret, passed in a single line from master to disciple, for hundreds or thousands of years. Only a handful were like his sect, which took disciples openly from all over the world. As soon as he moved in, he saw the bell on Lian Xi’s wrist but he didn’t realize it was a magical artefact and so he didn’t pay much attention to it.

However it wasn’t a big deal that he didn’t recognize it.

Most magical artefacts were weapons used to kill.

Su Jiao: “Your friend can still be saved!”

Lian Xi: “He’s not my friend.”

After talking, Lian threw away the Coke he had finished drinking into the bin. He brushed his pants and stood up.

Su Jiao: “???”

Su Jiao: “Have you thought of a solution?”

Lian Xi: “What solution?”

Su Jiao: “Then why didn’t you stand up?” Aren’t you going to keep watching him?

Lian Xi said calmly, his eyes shining. “It’s 7.30PM. I need to go home to live stream.”

Su Jiao: “….”

***

Lian Xi’s broadcast time was from 8PM to 12AM in the evening.

He sat in front of the computer, playing games quietly. As soon as it reached 12AM, he said goodbye to the three people in his room and directly logged off.

He pushed open the door and went to the kitchen to pour himself some water. As soon as he opened the door….

Lian Xi: “…..”

His short housemate was standing in front of his door. He said in a depressed manner, “It’s a human life. Do you really not care?”

Lian Xi: “….”

Wordlessly he went to the kitchen to pour some water. When he came out he saw his housemate sighing. “Ai, I finally understand how you’ve managed to live in Su City for so long. As long as you don’t do anything then you definitely won’t be discovered by those guys! This is actually an effective method, I’ve learnt a lot!”

Lian Xi: “….”

If you say so.

I know you won’t continue to tell me who “those guys” are, so you can just pretend that I know ba.

Su Jiao saw that even though Lian Xi didn’t speak, he also didn’t leave. So he continued to say, “I remember Yuan Mei’s “Zi Bu Yu” recorded a situation like this.” {T/N: Chinese novel written in 1788, I think it might be a collection of short stories.}

Lian Xi: “The Tale of Sui Garden?”

Shocked, Su Jiao said: “You also know?!”

Lian Xi nodded his head.

In “Zi Bu Yu’s The Tale of Sui Garden”, Yuan Mei wrote a story he had experienced first hand.

Previously he didn’t believe there were ghosts in the world, and of course he didn’t believe that people had three spiritual and seven physical souls. However one day, he suddenly became seriously ill and had a high fever. In a daze, he felt that there were six or seven people “lying together” on his bed. One was crying miserably and shaking him, trying to wake him. When his fever began to subside, the number of people lessened. Once he fully recovered these people disappeared.

Only then did he know that these were his three spiritual and seven physical souls.

Lian Xi: “There is a barrier between yin and yang, normal people can’t see ghosts and also can’t touch them. However Wanderer… that’s the name of that guy… his soul can’t be seen by people but they can touch him.”

Su Jiao: “That’s right, because he’s not dead. His body should still be in the yang world!” He paused then said, “However if the soul leaves the body for too long, it won’t be able to go back. If it’s gone longer than 49 shichen, then he will really die. We need to act quickly. Where does your friend live?” {T/N: Shichen is approx half an hour, so approximately 24 hours.}

Lian Xi: “He’s not my friend.”

“Oh right, right, I forgot. So where does he live?”

“I don’t know.”

“Ah?”

“Because he’s not my friend.”

Su Jiao: “….”

Even the gods can’t refute that he’s not your friend!

Every sentence makes sense, and cannot be refuted!

Lian Xi thought for a moment, “However, according to modern society, logically in this kind of situation, there’s only one place he could be.”

Su Jiao: “Ha?”

Lian Xi glanced at him: “The hospital.”

***

Lian Xi wasn’t quite sure why he ran over to the hospital in the middle of the night.

Logically, he and Wanderer weren’t close. Lian Xi didn’t even know what this guy’s real name was.

But it was clear that Wanderer had gotten hurt.

On his soul’s forehead there was a clear wound. He was hurt so one of his physical souls left his body.

And then came to find him.

Why would he come to find him?”

Even when he was near death, he still wanted to sign him?

Lian Xi comforted himself: Fine, since trouble has already come to his door, he’ll just take care of it a bit.

He will just treat it as acknowledging and giving a thumbs up to his man’s “even if I die I still want to sign him” professional spirit.

Su City had over a hundred hospitals.

In SanJia alone, there were seven hospitals.

After reaching the gate of the first hospital, Lian Xi and Su Jiao suddenly realized something.

“Do you know someone who works at the hospital?”

“Do you know someone who works at the hospital?”

“……”

“……”

Su Jiao said disbelievingly, “Aren’t you a Su City local?”

Lian Xi glanced at him. “Aren’t you a local of HuaXia?” {T/N: HuaXia is another name for China, MCH uses it in all her stories.}

Su Jiao: “???”

Lian Xi said quietly, “So how come you don’t know all the doctors in HuaXia?”

Su Jiao: “….”

Su Jiao sighed quietly to himself, “How come this fellow suddenly knows how to talk back to others?”.

Lian Xi glanced at him then took out his phone to call a DiDi.

Su Jiao: “Where are you going? Have you thought of a solution?”

Lian Xi ignored him.

He didn’t like to talk and he didn’t like to converse with other people. But that didn’t mean he couldn’t get angry.

If you wanted to find a stranger in a hospital, it was impossible without having a doctor as a friend. Plus there were hundreds of hospitals in Su City.

But when he got to the hospital gate, Lian Xi suddenly remembered something.

Wanderer had given him a business card!

After getting back home, Lian Xi rummaged around his room for a long time then finally found the card.

[Gem Guild’s Manager

Wanderer

QQ: 13123XXX2

Weixin: …..

Email: …..

Mobile: …..]

Lian Xi: ….???

That’s it?

That’s all there is?

There wasn’t even a real name?!

Out of all these contact methods, only the mobile phone looked a little bit useful. However Lian Xi already had his mobile. He had already given Wanderer a call that evening but no one picked up!

Lian Xi also thought about going online to ask some of the major hosts signed to Wanderer, or go to the Gem Guild and ask them if they could contact Wanderer’s family members.

However Lian Xi’s private message sank like a stone to the bottom of the ocean.

The email to Gem Guild did generate an automatic response in one second.

“Hello, the Gem Guild will respond to your application within 5 days. Please check your email….”

Who is applying!!!

All of the options had been exhausted and there were no more roads left.

Lian Xu thought for a long time then walked over to Su Jiao.

“Actually, there’s one more method.”

Su Jiao: “Huh?”

Lian Xi: “I’m really not friends with that person, and we’re not close.”

Su Jiao: “Ah?” Why are you suddenly saying this?

Lian Xi: “To use this method, I might need your help.”

Su Jiao: “…..”

“Can I refuse?”

Lian Xi gazed at him. “A human life, do you really not care?”

Su Jiao: “….”

Don’t think I don’t know these are the words I said to you!

After Su Jiao had heard Lian Xi’s idea, he was shocked and speechless. He started at Lian Xi: You actually can think of this kind of good idea?

However he immediately said, “But why does it have to be me! I can’t accept it! At least… at least we should do rock paper scissors, the person who loses has to do it!”

Half an hour later.

Su City’s WuMen Police Station.

Su Jiao walked helplessly into the police station with a depressed face.

Lian Xi followed him from behind.

It was 2AM in the morning, the outside world was quiet however inside the police station it was unusually busy.

Two drunkards who had been in a fight were being pushed down by a cop, forcing them to apologize to each other. A man who had crashed his car into a curb was saying loudly and waving his arms around, “Fine! Prick me! Prick my blood! You can say that my driving skills are poor, but you can’t say that I was drunk! Quick! Take my blood and test it! Hehe, see ? I’m not drunk! I’m just bad at driving!”

The policemen: “….”

They had never seen a bad driver this confident!

Su Jiao swallowed, then bit his lip and said, with a streak of determination, rushed inside. “Someone is going to die! Someone is going to die!”

Lian Xi followed him with his hands in his pockets.

Su Jiao’s rushing in startled the only old policemen who was free at the moment. Even another old policeman who was getting changed beside him froze in surprise. They raised their heads and glanced suspiciously at  Su Jiao.

Su Jiao’s nerves were really thick, he took no notice of this.

“Officer uncles, it’s like this. Please help me! I have an internet friend that I chat to all the time. He, he actually said he’s going to commit suicde! What should I do? Can you guys save him ah!”
