Chapter 261 258: Marshall's Familiar

[System Notification: Congratulations, Host. You have slain a Level 62 Striped Mana Bear.]

[You have gained 8000 Experience points. Due to the level difference, you have gained an additional 8000 EXP for killing it.]

[Rewards Obtained: Essence of Despair, Orb of Elemental Mastery, Elixir of the Forgotten King.

Val was already aware of the effect of the Essence of Despair as he had received it while hunting beasts and devils in the Shadow Valley, and he had sold it to a lucky someone when he visited the treasure pavilion of the Northern Frontier's Lower City.

The Essence of Despair was an item with a very rare effect. It could fortify the mental resistance of any person who consumes it and survives the act. A strong mental resistance provided a crucial advantage to people who relied on elixirs to upgrade their bloodline, which included the majority of the bloodline users. It also provided a crucial advantage in battles that involved mind-altering effects, the force of corruption, or psychic attacks. Thus, it was highly sought after by bloodline users and wizards alike.

Val didn't consider the Essence of Despair valuable as it couldn't help him increase his mental strength due to his traits.

However, its true value wasn't lost on him.

After all, he had sold the previous one for a whopping 10k contribution points to the Lower City's Chief Chronicler just recently.

The old man had also told him that if he acquired such an item again in the future, he should come straight to him, and he would purchase it from him for the same amount.

Basically, it made him 10k cp richer!

Val didn't know the effect of the other two items he was gifted by the system for defeating a level 62 beast, so he looked at the semi-transparent screen that showed them and cast detect.

Two more screens containing detailed information about the new and foreign items popped up in front of him.

[Name: Orb of Elemental Mastery]

[Description: This orb allows a wizard without an elemental affinity to permanently gain an affinity with a chosen element.]

[Name: Elixir of the King of Kings]

[Description: It grants the user a temporary boost in physical and magical strength and a special skill called absorption upon consumption. When absorption is in effect, any attack the consumer makes and successfully lands on his enemy will absorb a portion of the enemy's strength, enhancing the consumer's own capabilities. When the effect ends, the consumer's strength will return to normal, but the enemy will remain weakened.]

Val read their description and thought both the items were good. However, the Elixir of the King of Kings was better than the Orb of Elemental Mastery in his personal opinion. After all, he could use it to gain an unfair advantage in any battle. As for the Orb of Elemental Mastery, he had no use for it, at least for now.

The items appeared directly in the inventory of his system. He could take it out from there with a simple grab-and-pull action.

Thus, It wasn't known to the rest of the group that Val had made a fortune by slaying the level 62 beast. They still thought it was foolish for him to intervene in their battle as Marshall was going to monopolize everything and all the effort he had put into slaying the beast would go unrewarded.

"What are we waiting here for?" Clea impatiently asked Marshall.

If it was someone else who had spoken to him in such a manner, Marshall would have slapped them so hard they would fly back to the frontier, but he couldn't treat Clea with such respect as he was the son of the lower city's lord and the grandson of the lower city's grand master who was also the chief chronicler.

"The corpse of a level 62 beast is nothing short of a treasure. Leaving it here is a bit of a waste."

So Marshall decided to do something about it.

"Hurry up," Clea told Marshall and looked away.

Marshall opened a scroll adorned with intricate runes. He bit his thumb, drawing out blood. He then smeared the blood trickling down his thumb onto the scroll.

Instantly, it lit up, summoning a humanoid, wide and tall treant.

The treant had bark that resembled aged oak, with moss for its beard and leaves sprouting like hair.

"You have summoned me for?" the treant looked deeply at Marshall and asked.

"Deliver this corpse to my residence at the Frontier," Marshall commanded the treant.

"What's in it for me?"

The treant asked him skeptically.

"You can have its blood "

Marshall replied to it.

The blood of beasts, especially high-level ones, was exceedingly valuable to tree spirits.

They could use it to nourish themselves, speeding up their growth, and it was a known fact that the more they grew, the stronger they became. It wasn't losing out in this deal.

Marshall was confident that with such an offer, the treant wouldn't refuse.

"Alright, I will do it."

The treant agreed to fulfill his command, just as he had anticipated.nOVe-LB(In

"Take the main entrance. The guards at the gates know you're my contracted spirit, so they won't stop you from entering the lower city," Marshall informed it.

"I understand."

In a flash, the treant picked up the giant corpse and headed towards the Frontier like a gust of wind.

Val watched the treant's swift departure and felt a bit unsettled.

Despite its size, the treant moved as fast as the tentacle of the giant squid he had encountered in the Forest of Dread. It was a stark reminder that he wasn't the only one with trump cards up his sleeve.

'I can't afford to offend people like Marshall who are close to ascending to the advanced stage and have an influential position in the kingdom,' Val thought to himself.

He have finally realized he needed to tread more carefully than ever if he wanted to survive and thrive in this part of the kingdom that was overloaded with experts.

This also brought a change in the way he would deal with Clea and his group if he encountered them in the lesser dimension.
