Chapter 169: Giving Congee

Gu Lai had not planned to stay at Yu Xi’s for too long, so after a while, he bid his farewell. Seeing that light was about to break into the sky, he did not sleep and walked into the kitchen to make himself breakfast. The fridge was well stocked, which was unexpected as that didn’t make it seem quite like a bachelor’s home.

Opening up his phone, he found a video on making food. Gu Lai followed the teacher in the video very seriously, learning how to make breakfast. He was meticulous and detailed, containing none of that nervousness or clumsiness of a first time cook. Gu Lai had a bit of perseverance and an unmovable attitude towards food weirdly enough, and he had even planned to save enough money to open a restaurant that belonged to him.

“When the water is boiled, pour the rice that has been washed, and then add in about 10 grams of peanut oil. This way, the flavor of the congee won’t be too one dimensional or muted. When it boils again, stir the pot, making sure to reach the bottom……”

Gu Lai had a good memory and after watching just once, he remembered all the steps. With his head lowered, he cut the lean meat into little julienne pieces at quite a fast speed. Then he added some seasoning and very patiently stirred the bubbling pot of congee until each of the rice grains had burst open with a sweet, sticky fragrance. Only then did he add in the julienned pieces of ginger and century eggs, and then the last ingredients to add were the lean meat and green onions.

The perfect consistency of the congee mixed with the scent of meat quietly permeated the entire room. Gu Lai smiled wide enough that his eyes were squinted, very satisfied with his work of art. After tweaking the flavor, he ladled out a big bowl for himself and then finished it up without leaving a single drop.

There was still a lot in the pot and after Gu Lai thought about it, he grabbed a thermos and filled it up. He walked over to the other side of the hallway and knocked on Yu Xi’s door. She was probably just preparing to sleep, so her voice and motions sounded very violent and agitated,

“Who is it! Who is it! Can’t you just let someone sleep this early in the morning!”

Yu Xi quickly walked to her front door and was about to curse the hell out of whoever was standing outside, but when she saw that it was a perfectly styled Gu Lai with a thermos in his hand standing before her own door, the words in her mouth were swallowed right back down. She always had a very high tolerance towards handsome guys,

“Oh it’s you. What do you want?”

“I made a bit of congee. Do you want some?”

Gu Lai opened up the cover, and the smell of century egg and lean meat congee wafted out.1 There were also some green onions and fragrant sesame oil scattered on top, which was all too enticing.

Seeing this, Yu Xi reflexively swallowed, suddenly feeling an odd sense of hunger. She accepted the thermos and took a sniff. Finding that the congee was at the perfect consistency and had plenty of ingredients, she knew that this could not be bought from the roadside where it was made with mostly just water. She asked out of suspicion,

“Did you make this?”

“Mhmm. Try some. It’s good for your body to eat breakfast in the morning.”

Gu Lai still needed to go to work, so he took a look at his watch,

“When you are finished, make sure to wash it clean. I’ll come pick it up tonight.”

Yu Xi hated washing dishes the most,

“Uh huh……”

Gu Lai had not planned to make construction work his career. He wanted to learn as much as he could in this limited time that he had. So when he headed to work, he took his car, planning to drive to the supermarket and also grab some books after work.

A blue thermos sat quietly in the passenger seat. Gu Lai drove for a while before parking by the entrance of Shen You’s residential complex. Then he sent Shen You a message:

[ I brought you some congee. I’ll leave it at the security post. If you haven’t eaten breakfast, you can take a bite. ]

After all, he can’t finish it all if he just leaves it at home. Gu Lai opened the car door to get out and then left the thermos at the security post. The elderly guard inside had an easy going attitude and after inquiring a few things, he let Gu Lai leave the thermos there.

After Shen You had returned home so late at night, he had not slept at all. The moment his phone vibrated, he checked his phone. Seeing that it was from Gu Lai, he habitually flipped up in bed and then pulled open the curtains to take a look outside—–

Of course there was nothing to be seen, except for the water fountain in the middle of the residential complex.

Shen You hesitated for a moment and then casually grabbed a jacket before heading downstairs. The security guard asked,

“Mr. Shen? A man came by just now to drop off some food for you.”

Shen You acknowledged him with a sound,

“Where is he?”

The security guard passed a thermos over to him,

“He just left.”

Shen You had originally thought that Gu Lai had brought over takeout, so he did not expect that it would be a big thermos. With one hand holding the bag, he slowly walked back, thinking about something that no one would know.

Ke Jing had called him up in the morning,

“Have you started to grow mushrooms from staying all day and night at home for so long? Come and hang out. What, you an unmarried girl? Not gonna step out of the house?”2

He said to come and hang out but it would only be either street racing or drinking alcohol at bars and clubs; swimming in drunken dreams rather than going back home. They were still young and didn’t have any worries about food or the clothes on their back. So with the most basic desires fulfilled, they didn’t have much to ask for in their lives and their natural instincts were to find excitement.

“Not going.”

Shen You’s eyes scanned over the empty thermos and then he threw his bowl into the sink,

“My stomach hurts. Can’t drink any alcohol.”

Ke Jing was a bit disappointed,

“You don’t have to drink! After so long, there isn’t a point to just have me hanging out with stupid Tang.”

With one hand holding his phone and the other picking clothes out of his closet, Shen You said,

“Go find someone else. Didn’t He Fan just come back into the country a while back? The company’s having their stockholder meeting today and gramps wants me to go.”

Shen You didn’t have the best relationship with his family, and it directly dropped to nil when he came out of the closet. So he moved out by himself, only going back during the big holidays. He had an older brother, so nobody cared much about him.

Ke Jing didn’t know what he should say,

“When has your gramps never given you the side eye? When has he never yelled at you until gravestones flipped over? Aren’t you just going to get chastised for no reason? Fine, fine, fine, I won’t bother you. I’ll go find someone else.”

Shen You hung up and threw his phone on the bed and then went to change. As he was buttoning up, he stared at the back of his neck through the mirror out of habit where there was an enormous scarred over burn wound. It probably covered more than half of his back and it was very very horrifying to look at.

He quietly stared at the him in the mirror, and the longer he looked, the more he couldn’t recognize the other him. His fingers lightly touched over the rough ridges of the scar behind his neck, where there was always that phantom pain, as if there was still the lick of fire over his skin, tormenting him day in and day out.

This was an area of his body that was so ugly he himself wasn’t willing to look. Shen You closed his eyes and slowly retracted his hand. He changed his clothes and stepped out the door, the wide and large room suddenly quieting down.

Construction work was not a stable career. When there was work to be done, then he had a job. But when there was none, he could only rest. The construction was reaching its concluding stages, which in other words meant that in a short amount of time, Gu Lai would be out of a job. He could only set his prospective career at the forefront of his priorities and so when it was time for his lunch break, he would occasionally take his car out for a drive and try to find any information about job openings.

Gu Lai very rarely took the initiative to talk to his fellow workers. He had an overly handsome face and acted very gentlemanly; never sitting around in the dust and concrete and talk about dirty topics; won’t drink cheap beer or wine or eat cheap snacks with the other workers; won’t laugh or fool around with any of them until spit was flying in the air, chatting about which woman had the biggest breasts or bounciest asses. Most of the time, he would only clean up his hands and face and quietly sit on the side, hanging around the edges of the crowd.

He didn’t belong in the circles of these humans nor was he a human of this world.

Gu Lai wanted to make friends, but he didn’t know how to be one of them. He didn’t like the flavor of cheap beer nor did he like to sit around with a crowd of sweating people in this humid and hot summer season, listening to them cursing and swearing. So after working at the site for about a couple months, he didn’t know anyone else besides the head honcho.

He had missed writing in his diary yesterday, but Gu Lai did not plan to make up for it. To have missed it was to miss it. Even if he tried to make up for it, it wasn’t that day anymore.

Sitting on a bench by the roadside, not far away from the construction site and away from the crowds, Gu Lai had his journal placed on his knees as he wrote one character at a time, in perfect strokes.

June 17, Sunny, Wednesday

Today is very hot. The boss has said that after a month, the work will be complete. At that time, our pay will be calculated and handed out. The boss even patted my shoulder and said that I could be paid a lot.

Construction work is a bit dirty. Everyday after work I have to go back home to wash my hair and my body. This is a bit not very good. I think I shall close the curtains on this kind of work. The life of humans are very short, with the average expected lifespan around sixty years old. And I have already gone through more than a little half. I need to, before I turn old, learn much more, about many things.

A western-style baker does not seem to be a bad choice. I shall work hard and look forward to this goal.

Yang Mian cries very easily, but I do not know how I should comfort him. My memory bank is empty and clean, so I know nothing about him.

Shen You has a very serious gastrointestinal illness, because he does not eat his meals and shortens his life by drinking and smoking as much as he can, which is not very good.

Yu Xi has gotten a new boyfriend again. Her schedule seems to be switched from a normal human’s. She was also given a formal complaint by the owner because she was listening to music late at night, but I think she is really smart, always being able to make herself live happily.

Not far away from the bench was a bus stop. A bus that ran on Route 7 slowly passed by the road, and leaning against one of the windows on the bus was a girl who suddenly poked the man beside her. She said quietly,

“Ah, isn’t that person your ex, why……”

Yang Mian looked out the window at her words and found a man sitting by the roadside with his head down and writing on something. It looked as if he was a construction worker working nearby, his clothes were dotted with dirt and dried concrete, which brought about a very harried look about him. But that face was still as handsome as ever.

“You probably saw wrong…..”

Yang Mian turned his gaze away from the dried concrete on the man’s shoulders in embarrassment.

The girl muttered,

“Perhaps. Gu Lai was originally crowned the hottest guy of Z University. He shouldn’t be down like this, but he really does look like him.”

The glamourous Gu Lai that had been so freshly imprinted in him perhaps only existed in his memory. Yang Mian subconsciously lowered his head to take a look at his phone. He had sent a lot of messages to Gu Lai yesterday, but the other had only replied with a “Goodnight” in the late hours of night, so simple it made him speechless.

When Gu Lai got off work at night, he first returned home to take a shower and change into a clean set of clothes. Only then did he take the car to the supermarket. As he pushed the shopping cart, he checked some recipes posted by food bloggers and took down what he needed from the shelves. Not long after, his cart was quite full.

Just when he was about to pay, his phone suddenly vibrated. He took a look and saw that it was Shen You calling him through wechat. Gu Lai could only slow down and find a rather empty area to take his call. With a slightly tilted head and slightly confused eyes, he said,

“Hello?”

His voice was really nice on the ears, being low toned and filled with so much charisma. There may be a bit of coldness attached to it if you listen closely, but it will always have some warmth and care in it.

Shen You had just come back from the company meeting and was boredly sitting by the head of his bed. After hesitating for a long while, he finally called a number on his phone.

The moment he heard the other’s voice, he suddenly didn’t know what to say. He subconsciously furrowed his eyebrows, starting to feel agitated.

Gu Lai immediately spoke, unknowingly creating a way for Shen You to step down the high pedestal he made for himself,

“Is this Shen You?”

Shen You rolled around in his bed until his sheets were crumpled into a ball. He let out a breath of relief and acknowledged,

“Hmm……”

And then he didn’t know what he should say.

Gu Lai’s eyes scanned over the racks and grabbed a grape flavored juice. He meticulously looked for the expiry date. All around him were elderly ladies so as a handsome fellow he stood out from the crowd,

“Does your stomach feel a bit better?”

Not even his own father and mother had cared enough about him to ask; only his doctor had asked this question. Shen You squished his face against his hand and fell onto the carpet from the bed. Only this time it was not in agitation but in helplessness. He furrowed his eyebrows in uncertainty and stuttered out,

“Perhaps, bett– I’m better now.”

And then immediately burrowed his face into his knees from embarrassment, quickly adding,

“Thank you for your congee.”

Once he said that, he mentally gave himself a vicious slap. He hit his pillow hard as he yelled at himself, what the fuck me, why did I have to thank him huh?! That piece of scumbag is not better than me ok?! What, getting soft after he bought you medicine and gave you congee huh?!

Hearing this, Gu Lai said,

“How was the taste? Did it suit your taste buds?”

Shen You immediately stopped squishing his pillow and calmly responded,

“Mhmm.”

It was true. The taste was very, very good and he was even suspicious of Gu Lai having placed an order at some high end restaurant.

Gu Lai was an easy going man and he had planned to practice his cooking skills, so he said,

“Then I’ll come by sometime tomorrow to give you some more.”

Shen You’s head thumped on the wall as he closed his eyes and kept lightly thumping his head against the wall, telling himself that he should learn how to say no. But then what came out of his mouth was,

“You…… come over. I’ll give you the thermos back.”

“No worries, I still have one at home. You can leave it at the security gate and I’ll come pick it up in the morning.”

The supermarket was filled with a lot of people so it was not a suitable time to talk on the phone for very long.

Seeing that there was an empty checkout counter, Gu Lai quietly apologized and hung up.

Shen You stared at his phone screen, narrowing his eyes slightly, before using a pillow to cover his own face and rolled around in bed.

What the fuck!
