Chapter 58: Her Rudeness

Ailea choked. She was at a loss and did not know how to answer. The surrounding nobles’ eyes immediately turned cold. Some made a side remark that the flowers Ailea used in her dress were not worth anything compared to jewelry Rita was wearing.

Ailea turned downcast, not replying.

“Am-am I being rude?” Rita asked, perplexed.

“No.” Ailea shook her head. “You said the right thing.”

“Ah… I’m sorry,” Rita gasped. “ I only wanted to talk to you because you were alone. I didn’t mean to put you in a terrible position.”

“…”

“Would you allow my friend Lady Norton to borrow the Lord of Excalibur for a moment? She wishes to dance with him once before the both of you leave for Excalibur Castle.”

“It’s fine. You don’t need to mind me,” Ailea replied.”

“Are you sure you’re okay with it?”

“It doesn’t matter. Don’t worry about me.”

Ailea didn’t have the right to be upset. Clint had been forcefully married to her. She allowed him to live as he desired in this marriage as such she thought this was the best answer. Though little did she know that Clint was a weapon she could weaponize. Her words not giving any concern to Clint’s life were a cause for gossip. The nobility immediately mouthed remarks towards the woman Clint had married.

“Why is the Lord of Excalibur with that hideous and ugly woman…?”

“Haven’t you heard? The emperor forced their marriage into each other. You’ll know once you see them together. I feel sorry for the Lord of Excalibur. To be tied up to that woman, the royalty was forced to give him the title of Grand Duke. It will be a loveless marriage.”

“But the Grand Duke had managed to reclaim all of Excalibur with his might and power and he was rewarded with an ugly woman? What a pity…”

They were all convinced that the Grand Duke left Ailea alone. She had been abandoned. With that thought in mind, it was not worth mentioning the woman Clint had no love for. Continuing to speak of that woman would only degrade Clint’s prestige.

Ailea looked around carefully with solemn eyes. When the nobility’s attention shifted to another topic, completely forgetting her presence, she walked towards the big curtain. She untied it and hid in the shadows.

“Isn’t her disease contagious?”

“Ugh… don’t speak of it any longer. My mood is ruined.”

As if purposely making her listen, the nobility’s voice rose to a higher octave.

Ailea smiled sorrowfully. “It’s not as fun as I thought.”

***

Clint bit his lips, anxiously waiting for thed*mn greeting to end. He did not shake hands with one or two people, but almost a dozen of them. He had been on the battlefield until recently and now he’s to be a good puppet listening to the Crown Prince and the guests’ needless chatter?

‘f*ck’s sake. Get this over with already.’

His mind drifted to Ailea, worried that she’s all alone. She’s probably waiting for him. A long while had passed, too. Time had never felt so long than right now. He should’ve brought Kaiton with him. At least Ailea would have a company while he’s away.

The anxious Clint bent over and whispered in Lawrence’s ear, “Was it required for all the previous lords of Excalibur to do this? Can I leave now?”

“The Grand Duke of Excalibur is a prestigious title only next to the emperor. Mind your manners.”

How many traitorous b*stards in Excalibur desired to break free from the imperial rule? It’s no wonder they had enough of the royal family. Forcing them to wait in this torturous meet and greet. If Clint had it his way he’d have long protested.

Clint decided to drink to pass time until finally, it came to an end.
