Through my , I sense Rachel’s trembling anger. I look at Jonghak, but he simply remains silent. He must know too that what he is suggesting is deplorable.

And here I am hoping Jongak can play the bad guy.

I admonish Rachel’s self-righteousness. “It is my life, and if possible, I’d like to stay alive. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but there are merits to this suggestion. For example, if a fight does occur, I can use the civilians as good cover, while I use my invisibility to escape. It is fairly simple.”

“Basically, you want to make them your cannon fodder…” She angrily rebukes me.

Rachel is hurt by my words. I can tell. I have become very sensitive to emotions since learning , and I am not liking it. To think that such an amazing skill can be burdensome to me.

That is when Nayun makes an alternative suggestion. “How about we set Hyon’s meeting in a gala? I will ask Dad’s help, and invite heroes to attend. I don’t know how it can be exactly done, but what do you think?”

Amazing. Our Chae Nayun is so smart I am pissed. If you could have suggested that earlier, I wouldn’t have to confront Rachel about morality… Ugh… That is unfair to Nayun and Rachel. I shouldn’t be such a hypocrite.

Yeonha polishes Nayun’s suggestion by referring to her knowledge of current affairs. “It is a good idea since Nayun has her grandfather’s support unconditionally. However, we cannot invite heroes because they are busy with Djinn hunting. Instead, we should invite hunters, agents, and the like. They are not as good as heroes, but they are better than civilians and ordinary humans. They won’t die very easily though. If we have professional bodyguards on site, it will be easier to protect the ‘cannon fodder’ we put in place.”

Now, that’s nasty. Directly calling them ‘cannon fodder’ is too much. Are you a Devil? Oh, Yeonha is a half-devil. I scold myself in my mind.

Hajin adds. “The Chae Clan is powerful, so Nayun should be able to prepare strong enough bodyguards as deterrents. I suggest the venue of the gala which will be used should be only a few kilometers from the Hero Association’s Tower. This way, Hyon can receive ‘neutral’ reinforcements if things go sideways.”

Just to remind everyone, Suho also tells them his concerns. “Chae Joochul is Chae Nayun’s ally. Sinful is separate from the Chae Clan. We must be careful.”

We polish the plan further. In the end, the team decides to have Class Veritas invited by Nayun to the gala. This way, Suho, Hajin, Nayun, and Rachel can serve as backup though not as a member of Sinful, but as a student.

This is a better and more realistic plan than simultaneously having Hyon’s meeting and Hajin’s meeting with the Chameleon Troupe happen at the same time.

Meanwhile, Yeonha will stay in [Under Cube] as the person behind the screen monitor to oversee the operation.

Jonghak will also stay at Cube because he doesn’t want to participate in this particular operation. Selfish bastard. Anyway, we are planning not to involve everyone from the Veritas Class to join the gala.

I will have to manipulate my classmates’ situations with [Cube AI]’s assistance to force them not to attend the gala. We have to exclude the weaker and those who have lesser survival ability among our classmates. This is insane. Though this is less heartless than having to risk the lives of civilians, it is still cruel to use our classmates as cannon fodder.

It is a matter of principle though. As an aspiring hero, I like to think that this is an opportunity for the Cube Cadets of Veritas Class.

“This will be my real debut, huh? Cool…” I comment.

Rachel laments at the thought of having to risk her fellow classmates’ lives. “It would have been better if we could invite heroes… But…” She knows it too. There is a great lack of manpower currently, and we can only settle with resources that we can reach.

“I also prefer not involving the Veritas Class.” Hajin expresses his same regrets. “But the Chameleon Troupe has excellent information gatherer. They have Droon, and then… There is Jain.”

The members of Sinful know each member of the Chameleon Troupe through Hajin’s compilation of their Character Profiles. If Droon is the person who sits on the chair to gather intelligence, Jain is a field information operation agent who gathers intelligence by mixing with the crowd.

Jain can easily extract information of who is attending the gala, and how it has come to be. We cannot expose Nayun having a hand in that meeting.

“Jain will definitely be their…” I realize.

From my understanding of the information available to us, Jain’s gift resembles mine a lot. She also has the attributes of concealment on top of disguise and camouflage.

“Then we shall do as agreed.” Hajin adjourns our meeting.

Everyone makes their preparations.

Kim Hajin contacts his manager, Park Soohyuk. He instructs Soohyuk to represent him at the ‘Festival of Heroes’ Closure Gala and use his name to arrange him as a sponsor.

It is Yeonha who gives the suggestion of using this as a theme with the gala’s focus on the three miraculous geniuses— Hajin, Suho, and Nayun. Yeonha tries convincing Jonghak to attend to make it the four miraculous geniuses, but Jonghak only gets annoyed by her.

Shin Jonghak doesn’t like pity, but it is not pity at all that Yeonha is giving— it is her genuine concern.

Meanwhile, Chae Nyaun prepares for the setting up of the venue by contacting her father and grandfather. For her, she only needs to call, and her family should be able to do it.

Kim Suho will be visiting his family, checking up on their new house he personally bought with the organization’s fund. It is a modest house fitting for the middle class. Initially, Nayun and Yeonha insist on donating one of their properties, but I and Hajin know better that Suho’s parents will appreciate it better if it comes from their son.

I and Hajin as someone who comes from a not-rich family feel for Suho. I wish rich girls learn how to be humble. It is annoying.

In the meantime, I continue my training and daily dose of Evandel. Of course, I do not forget to send an email to Yi Byul which we easily learn through Hajin’s Book of Truth.

Then… D-day.

The gala is set 5.21 kilometers southwest of the Hero Association’s Tower. The party is a masked party. I wear my boring question-mark face with my entire ensemble. The gala doesn’t restrict the bringing of artifacts as long as they are not a weapon-type.

My question mark face mask attracts the attention of the passersby. I don’t try to conceal my presence, thus earning attention from my dull mask.

I recall saying something to Hajin about having folklore monsters as our masks. Mine is essentially 'the' faceless— it has many variations from Slavic origins or Japanese yokai.

I enter the prestigious mansion with all kinds of decorations that dazzle the eyes. I see Nayun, Suho, and Hajin not wearing any masks— it is because they are the protagonists of this gala. The topic of the gala is to celebrate the rise of these three geniuses who for the first time have shown their talent to the world from the Duel Rankings.

I recognize all kinds of rookie hunters and veteran hunters. The ‘hunter’ is a group of people who focus on hunting monsters. Unlike heroes whose job is to clear dungeons, the hunter cache is full of profiteers. They are mercenaries hired by the government to hunt monsters. They don’t form guilds, instead, they create clans.

The biggest hunter organization is the ‘Vast Expanse’ located in the more dangerous territory of monsters in Korea, and plenty of branches around the world.

Speaking of ‘Vast Expanse’, I recognize a few famous visitors from the acclaimed hunter organization. This is perfect. With this kind of deterrent, the leader of Chameleon Troupe will be forced to talk instead of fighting.

The Vast Expanse is a special organization because while they are mainly composed of hunters, they are not called a clan. The Vast Expanse is so strong, that the Hero Association has no authority over them. This speaks of their prestige and power.

Nayun… or say… Chae Joochul didn’t pull any punches in helping his granddaughter.

“Woman. Black hair. At your 7 o’clock.” I hear Hajin’s voice through my earpiece. Hajin’s eyesight is tremendously powerful and simply by using his peripheral vision, he can see the space around me.

I turn around with a smile, though my smile won’t be showing since my mask covers the full face.

“Hello there, milady…” I don’t know about etiquette. I can only greet her as politely as possible.
