Detention Center.

I read over a couple of books and recite to the Cube’s AI the existence of Devils. I have been talking for hours asking her what a Devil is. How does Djinns come to be? They are all leading questions that should lead the AI in the direction I want.

However.

Nothing seems to go through her. It is as if despite having access to all kinds of knowledge, the Cube’s AI greatly lacks information in regard to religion. I find this suspicious as religion is a very important driving force for humanity since the primitive era.

I continue interrogating the AI, trying to find a loophole for me to exploit. I know it is a vain task, but I have to try. I know trying to convince Cube’s AI to aid us in hunting the Devil is too much of a stretch, but I am a pretty optimistic guy.

“Do you know that Djinns exist here within Cube?”

“Yyyes…”

It is about curfew, and I hate to do this to myself, but I will have to leave my other questions for some other time. I should be able to spare a few minutes to ask one final question for tonight.

“Why do you condone the Djinn’s existence?”

“Bbbecause I am programmed this way— to believe in the potential of humanity…”

Her electronic buzzing voice echoes in my ears as I walk away from the detention center. I have a lot to think about. My reason for being here is to convince the AI of the existence of Devils and seek her aid, but it seems that I fail miserably on convincing her.

From our exchange of dialogues, it seems that she is aware of who are the Djinns within Cube exactly however she purposefully refrains from intervening. The Cube’s AI has a strict restraint on getting involved in the ongoing activities of Cube, except the operation process itself.

“I wonder if Hosup can hack her…” It is a strange thought, but unlikely. Moreover, I don’t want Hosup to get involved either as he is a non-combatant.

Rachel plays with her pen, while she listens idly to the professor’s discussion. She is feeling overly guilty as Yoenha is absent today because of a stomach ache.

Clearly, the series of incidents violating Yoenha’s body has taken its toll. Yoenha’s adverse reaction to physical contact is a telltale sign already of her germaphobe tendency.

This morning, after Yoenha gets a taste of Rachel’s eye boogers, Yeonha ends up fainting only to wake up a few hours later. Because of that, Rachel has to skip a few classes to take care of her.

Rachel also takes her time to clean up the place and puts the printed pages of Yun Hyuk’s data in the shredder. It is a very terrible morning for Rachel as she is not really in the zone to study. Nonetheless, she forces herself on studying the material in front of her.

After the class, she decides to do something.

It is painful to admit, but Rachel lacks trustworthy friends. Of course, she has a sense of camaraderie with Cube Cadets who belong to her homeland, but the boss-subordinate relationship with them is merely perfunctory.

Rachel is aware that if these cadets from her homeland find an offer from any Korean Guild, they will immediately jump ships. Also, Rachel doesn’t really need simple trustworthy friends, but also strong friends.

At lunch, she sees Kim Suho eating with his pal, Yi Yeonghan. Rachel takes up her courage and approaches Suho. “Kim Suho-ssi?” She respectfully addresses Suho.

Yi Yeonghan being the troublemaker he is makes a quip. “Wow, you have it good, Mr. Popular…” After he says that, he leaves the table for Suho and Rachel so that the two can have a proper conversation.

Rachel is thankful for Yeognhan’s gesture as through this way, she can keep her conversation with Kim Suho a secret. Kim Suho is an honorable and good guy. This is Rachel’s honest impression of him.

On top of this, he is also strong. As Rachel cannot carry the burden of knowing that there are Djinns within Cube alone, she has to seek help. Talking with Suho is a great risk for her as she doesn’t really know who to trust.

Rachel doesn’t like gambling, but she has to do it.

The combined efforts of Rachel and Yoenha allow them to learn of quite horrifying implications.

There is a Djinn faction within Cube, and from the tidbits of exchange of messages from their peripheral members’ hacked accounts, Rachel and Yoenha learn that this Djinn faction is actually converting Cube Cadets into Djinn within the Cube Facility.

If it really is what Rachel and Yoenha have discovered, then they will need help. Initially, Rachel is thinking of getting the faculty involved, but that is a much greater risk considering how big the operations of the hidden Djinn faction within Cube are.

They don’t have strong evidence yet, but they believe that Yun Hyuk, the president of the Academic Club has a strong connection with this Djinn faction. It is because all of the peripheral members that Yoenha is able to hack accounts share a relationship with Yun Hyuk one way or another.

Rachel calms her breathing, thinking more positively about gaining a possibly strong ally. Yoenha agrees with Rachel involving Suho, so there should not be any harm done.

If there is something Rachel has to do, then it is not involving Yoenha’s name, so in the case that Suho is with the enemy, and Rachel gets compromised, then Yoenha will remain safe as she is.

“Their… are Djinns within Cube…” Rachel whispers to Suho finding no appetite to eat.

Suho is about to stuff a spoonful of rice and curry onto his mouth when he hears Rachel’s words. Suho loses his appetite with a serious look on his face. “This…” He looks at his food, and then at Rachel. “Let’s finish eating first. We will need the food.”

Suho increases his pace of eating his lunch, while Rachel does the same as elegantly as possible. After sharing their meal, Suho stands up and asks Rachel to follow him. “Let’s go, there is a place we need to go first.”

Rachel follows Suho meekly.

They climb the stairs with steady steps. Rachel doesn’t have her weapon with her as that will be too obvious of a provocation and might subject her to suspicion. She thinks of plans and countermeasures if Suho belongs to the secret Djinn faction.

Rachel is the princess of England, and as a political tool, she will be worth more to the Djinns alive than dead. If Suho really belongs to the Djinn faction, then Rachel must steel her resolve and try to infiltrate their organization.

For some reason, climbing up the stairs is making Rachel nervous. “Why do we keep on climbing up?”

Finally, they reach the rooftop. This sends Rachel into a panic, but she suppresses it to keep a calm façade. Chae Nayun sits on a bench waiting idly.

“Suho? Why did you bring Rachel here?” Nayun asks curiously.

Suho shortly responds. “She has something to say we need to hear.”

At that exact moment, two new arrivals appear on the rooftop. One with dark hair, and the other with brown hair. “Kim Hajin?” Rachel nervously calls to the dark-haired individual.

***

Wow. What a party… Rachel is here, and Kim Hajin doesn’t know why either. In fact, Hajin is giving me a suspicious gaze as if to accuse me that it is my doing that is why Rachel is here.

“Hey,” Suho softly calls our attention to him. “So, Rachel-ssi here has something to say. Please, Miss Rachel, you can trust everyone here. Not a single one of them are Djinns…”

Good job, Suho! I compliment the guy for his mindfulness. Yeah, exactly, why is Rachel here?

“I…” Rachel is doubtful whether to trust Suho’s words as the rooftop being an isolated place is not really conducive to trust, but in the end, Rachel decides to say what she has to say. “There are Djinns in Cube.”

Quickly, Hajin gives an almost overprotective response. “Then you don’t need to be here. We already know that, and we are taking action about it fast.”

“No, it is not that simple.” Rachel is not backing down. It looks like she has some level of awareness that we know of the Djinns hiding in Cube.

I tap Hajin’s shoulder who is about to rebuttal Rachel’s words. “Let her speak, man…”

Rachel breathes a sigh of relief at finally having the floor for herself so that she can explain. “It is an organization. It is not just Djinns, but a group of Djinns acting in an organized manner. And… they are creating Djinns here within Cube.

Sharp intakes of air from Suho, a mild gasp from Nayun, and even Hajin feels surprised at the revelation evident in his widened eyes. I already have my suspicions thanks to my conversation with the Cube’s AI, but to think that it has gone this far.

I sharply question Rachel. “And how did you know that? No offense, princess… I know that you are smart, but you lack the resources to learn all of this…”

Hajin turns his face to me, while Suho and Nayun wait for my explanation. Rachel feels nervous at the moment, and I grasp this weakness.

“Tell me, Rachel… Are you and Yoenha on this?” At my question, Rachel shows a mild reaction which everyone easily catches up to. “Yoenha’s web of connections here in Cube is far and wide. I can see it that the two of you together can quickly unravel this conspiracy… What do you think, president?”

I hurl the ball at Hajin. I have already informed Hajin about his presidency of our little club. Of course, he is very resistant at first, but after throwing Nayun’s name in the mud, and the Devil’s involvement, then he has no choice but to cooperate.

“This can be an opportunity for us…” Hajin with the cunning eyes of a wolf declares with eager bloodlust. “We will begin the hunt this instance…”
