“Any weapon you can think of should be here.”

Instructor Kim Soohyuk after guiding the class to the weapons selection area, eases down on a chair as he observes everyone running around to see the weapons.

The more than 100 students of Veritas class gawk around the various weapons lying around in their resting area. Sword, Spear, Katana, Saber, Dagger, Rapier, Halberd, Greatsword, Zweihander, Bow, Gun, Whip, Gauntlet, etc.

It is like a freaking toy store in here.

“Stand in front of the weapons you want. We’ll supply you with the training weapons. But don’t look down on them just because they’re a training weapon. Their market price is 5 million won.” The instructor adds.

I gulp nervously. I recall treating Hajin and Hosup to a meal after the Cube Entrance Ceremony. It is one hell of a learning experience for me about the value of money.

Hmmm… I wonder what weapon I should pick. I already know what the others, mainly the main characters are going to pick.

If I have a Gift, it will be easier for me to pick. In this world, gifts are like superpowers that give an individual superhuman qualities, and I have none of that.

Kim Suho, the main protagonist of Returnee Hero picks up the sword in retrospect of his Swordsaint Gift with Steel Attributes.

Shin Jonghak, the second main protagonist of Returnee Hero picks up a spear. I am not really sure of his gift.

Then there is Chae Nayun. Initially, she will be using a bow. But if she really is the Chae Nayun from The Novel’s Extra’s epilogue, then she will be using a sword. Not to my surprise, she does pick up a sword variety… specifically, a Greatsword.

The students around her yelp in surprise as they see Chae Nayun easily lift up a big-ass sword despite her smaller physique.

Rachel of England, a princess, and definitely my favorite heroine who (spoiler alert) did not manage to win Hajin’s heart pick up a rapier… Another sword variety.

There is also Yoo Yoenha who picks up a whip… Honestly, I don’t even think she has a Gift. If she has a superpower, I think it is her overactive imagination that often causes trouble in the novel. Dissing her aside, she has splendid management and business skills considering how she becomes a big shot in the future.

I must say… that must be a gift, if not a gift…

Last but not least… there is Kim Hajin… the inevitably one and only protagonist of The Novel’s Extra. The dude is low-key inching on an infamous weapon of war.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the novel.

“Choose carefully. Once you pick your weapon, you won’t be able to change it for at least 6 months.” The instructor adds.

I simply stand in a daze. I am not sure what weapon I should pick. I can copy Kim Hajin on what he is about to do, but I don’t want to ruin this scene.

“Kim Chundong, why are you standing still?” Kim Soohyuk asks Hajin who is standing like a sore thumb near the weapons rack of long-ranged weapons.

Kim Hajin stares blankly at the one weapon no one gives a shit— the handgun.

***

Even a five-year-old can use it to kill someone. Such is the convenience of a gun.

Kim Hajin picks it up. The weapon of choice from the modern world he knows— this is a gun, one that doesn’t require an instruction manual and one that anyone can use with a click.

However, in this world, this weapon is the weakest lump of metal. Heroes avoid this weapon not out of fear, but out of its uselessness. No hero will even willingly wield it even if they have to amputate a single limb… Well, that is an exaggeration.

Still, Hajin can imagine a Hero choosing to give up an arm instead of relying on a gun that can get them killed in a highly intense situation where mana is going everywhere.

Most likely, the weapon being here is only because for the sake of being here. Something like out of courtesy. But no one in the entire Cube can imagine… someone will actually pick up a gun instead of the reliable refined cold arms that can withstand, wield, and work mana.

“But this is the only choice I have…” Inside Hajin’s head, he decides to stick to his choice with conviction.

This is the only choice he has, as he doesn’t even know how to wield the other weapons. By referring to his service in the military in his past life, he can at least protect himself with a gun. It is also his personal preference as using close-range weapons means he does not have to get personal.

Seeing his enemies bleed, being cut, dying and himself being stained by all those images not excluding the drops of blood and guts spilling on him… is just too much stimulation for his modern mind.

The world he is currently in is barbaric. That much is true.

But in his heart, he will not stoop so low.

This might be arrogance.

Or naivety.

Still, the only thing that concerns him now is for him to go home. It is only right for him to want to go home. He has a life before all of this. He has a father and mother from old 'Korea' he 'was' living. Not this Korea where dungeons and heroes exist.

Moreover, this will be the best for the real Kim Chundong, whose deletion does come with a bad taste.

“Kim Chundong.” Waking him up from his stupor is the instructor’s low and somber voice.

The other students’ gazes fall on him, thus placing him in the spotlight. Shin Jonghak and Kim Suho are especially sizing him up.

Kim Hajin doesn’t like being the center of attention, so he quickly walks away from the weapons rack and tucks the weapon in his waist. He can feel the weight of the metal, and subtly, he traces its contour from his waist while resisting the temptation to flash it and inspect the entire thing.

More eyes fall on him as the commotion spread to the others.

***

Kim Hajin’s weapon is a handgun, but then, what about me?

As someone who shares a lot of similarities with Kim Hajin in terms of past life, doesn’t me picking up a gun is the sensible choice?

If I do, I believe this might be detrimental to Hajin’s growth. He doesn’t know yet that by getting attention, he gets stronger. If I pick a gun, the attention on him will be lesser.

I don’t want that to happen. The stronger Hajin is, the safer this world will become.

Still. Guns are still excellent weapons in this world. But this is only true for ordinary soldiers who cannot wield mana. For Heroes, guns are utter trash.

Simply put, a gun is not as potent as a Hero’s choice of weapon which can sustain mana and exhibit effects that can come from a Gift or the Myths and Legends manifesting from the history of cold arms.

Firearms just don’t have any history to it for mana to dwell in them.

It is different for Hajin though. The dude can mutate items. He can reinforce bullets through his Creator's authority and force effects on them. If Hajin wants to, he can make elemental bullets that carry a specific element from fire, water, light, etcetera.

In terms of versatility, Hajin is clearly the best.

Then. Again. How about me?

I can feel Instructor Kim Soohyuk’s eyes bearing on me. I bet he is not calling me, afraid that I might become crazy again. “Hmmm…”

“Instructor,” I cannot take it anymore. I might as well ask. “Do you have any suggestions on what weapon should I use?”

“What do you use when you were in Agent Military Academy?” He asks.

I don’t know Hyon Hyung’s past. So, this question might become a problem for me. Thankfully, I have done my research. “Daggers, sir…” I murmur. I don’t really want to use them.

“Then use that…” The instructor advises me self-explanatorily.

“Sir,” I cry to him cluelessly. I don’t even know how to phrase my words. “I might cut myself, you know? Should I use a sword? The hilt at least has a guard…”

“You crazy kid…” Kim Soohyuk’s frown creases, and creates more folds in his forehead.

I swear. I am not being crazy this time.

As the weapons selection finishes, I end up not choosing anything. My dear instructor, Kim Soohyuk, has to give me a deadline so that I don't mess things up and disturb the class. Should I just use a flamethrower or something? Are that kinds of weapons available here?

If it is, I might as well go with a tank.
