Chapter 71

“Let’s talk,” Yun Seung-Ah feigns an amiable smile to me. “What do you say on the witness reports of Shin Jonghak? Aren’t you really a Djinn just as you claim from the video footage?”

I also had Cube blur out the audio files of the CCTV footage so there is no way they actually know that. “I exercise my rights to remain silent.” There is technology to detect Djinns and there are even people who have incredible magic power sensitivity who can detect them.

However, there are also Djinns whose abilities and skills can hide their own malice to the point that they can mix up with people easily. Of course, these aren't foolproof measures either as in the face of a highly attuned sensory type Hero with a high perception, most Djinns will be found out if time and effort is put into it.

“Could it be that you are guilty that is why you choose to remain silent?” Yun Seung-Ah tries poking over my defense. But then again, I remain silent. I won’t waste my saliva on her since I did my minimum requirement of spitting some facts on the other interrogator.

Yun Seung-Ah proceeds to question me with rudimentary questions, and I answer the best I can. “How old are you?” “17.” “Are you a Djinn?” “No.” “What is your gender?” “Male.” “What is your Gift?” “Confidential.” “Who are your parents?” “Dunno.” “Where are you born?” “Planet Earth.” “What is your favorite food?” “Deez nuts.” “…”

I see Yun Seung-Ah having a double take after I reply in English.

I lean closer to whisper the green joke I have in mind. “I like your nuts, let me nip ‘em.”

This interrogation is boring me to death. I’d rather face a wall and contemplate life. Give names to my Gift Applications so that I can properly call them my special moves.

Yun Seung-Ah’s face didn’t move one bit at my salacious provocation. “Your behavior in Cube has been noteworthy in that you like being the butt of the joke. Creating disturbances within the class like an attention-seeker. Can you please explain to me why?”

“Because the fate of the world lies on it,” I tell her, and I mean it. I am only screwing around with her, but she is taking me too seriously.

“How?” She asks.

“…” Well, fuck my mouth. I should just say any philosophical thing. “It is to express my existence, and so that I may live. For me, being unable to exist is the end of the world…”

“I… see…” She seems weirded by the answer, well sucks to be you.

Yun Seung-Ah still has more questions to ask, but she will ask them another time. "I should check the footage again..."

When Yun Seung-Ah leaves the interrogation room, she feels bad for herself greatly. She cannot even interrogate the kid about his suspicious origin. “What am I thinking?” The way he answers matches their assumption of his identity.

“Get me the psych evaluation,” She tells her aide.

Her job to uproot Cube with the Djinn presence is guaranteed to end now with the incident and the Djinn terrorism recently. The Association will not slack off and finally do its part well in uprooting the Djinns that remain hiding in Cube. With the traces these malicious Djinns left, the Association should be able to catch a few more.

What Yun Seung-Ah is simply doing now is clean-up work, and while catching Hyon Hyung may spell merit for her and the Guilds, she cannot find it in her good heart to forsake such a child.

“He is not even a Djinn…” Yun Seung-Ah is mostly certain about this. After getting the boy checked up if he has any malicious energy, it is already shown in the results that he is not a Djinn.

The only reason he remains a suspect is because of the eyewitness account of Shin Jonghak and the investigation they have been doing on Hyon Hyung prior to the incident. In fact, Yun Seung-Ah after meeting the boy face to face is quite certain that he is human.

Because of a certain incident in the past when she is betrayed by a shapeshifter friend, she resolves on honing her senses to the point that she can now masterfully use her perception to see with her ears, hear with her nose, and smell with her eyes. It is a peculiar skill that has integrated with her swordsmanship to the point that she is able to last a minute top against a Master Rank Hero solo under the right circumstances.

Thus, her confidence in her senses that Hyon Hyung is not a Djinn, and that he may be a case of misidentification.

The Djinn Investigation Unit is a temporary group composed of various Guild-affiliated Heroes. After that incident, the Association has no choice but to put matters into their own hands. As a result, the Djinn Investigation Unit has to disband.

The problem arises from the fact that they cannot receive the promised rewards for doing this job for the Association anymore. Yun Seung-Ah can see the Association doing them dirty like that.

As the leader of their temporary unit, it is her responsibility to protect her Guild and the other Guild’s interest. And for her to do that, she must sacrifice Hyon Hyung, but she is not that kind of person. The other members of this temporary unit though will not agree and will push strongly on the assumption that Hyon Hyung is a Djinn.

This is not bad for the Association too. Yun Seung-Ah knows what the Hero Association thinks. They will be more than willing to use the scapegoat presented to them.

Every Djinn in the Cube Attack is resisting ferociously that they cannot even capture a single one of them alive. These Djinns back then even has the resoluteness to commit suicide at the signs of being captured. They are too ruthless suggesting how big the force is behind that terrorism.

As Djinns leave only ash in death, the Hero Association cannot really do their favorite trick of painting someone a public enemy. That changes though if they have a scapegoat.

“Ma’am, here is the psych evaluation… This also includes data from the observation of Mr. Humpfrey’s interrogation.” Her aide sends her the data via her smartwatch.

Yun Seung-Ah takes a quick read. “Signs of deep mental trauma in the past… Possibly an only child, maybe even an orphan. And also a refugee… That makes sense, and what else? Told the truth to every question, except the question about what his favorite food is.” The psych evaluation is nothing to look down on, and is not some parlor trick, as the person who made this has a Psychometry Gift which is way better than any lie detection devices out there.

Yun Seung-Ah envies the Association for having someone on their payroll to have a Skill like this. Sadly, most non-combat Gift wielders prefer working for the government than the Guilds. That aside, she begins sympathizing with the poor kid.

After they learn Hyon Hyung’s lacking background, their first assumption is that he must be a refugee. However, after scouring the shared census data around the world, they cannot still find anything even with the Association’s resources.

That only leaves one possibility— Hyon Hyung must come from a destroyed Country since Outcall. Refugees from the victims of Monster Outbreaks are a rare thing as they rarely make it out alive with monsters barring their way.

Yun Seung-Ah makes her way to a particular person’s resting place. She will need to talk to her senior Aileen and ask for an assist.

I am a prisoner, yet I feel so free. There is no longer is there any interrogator harassing me. This will be a rare break as once I am out, there will be too many damning things to do for us.

First, let’s organize my new special moves. The applications of the function [Always Here] and [Not Here] are worthy of a Special Move Name considering their effects. I just love naming things, I guess.

Let’s see.

I really love it when I can draw from various cultural references in my head and do some naming for my own special moves. This is like an ultimate dream for me. Naming stuff. This is a man’s dream.

Since transmigrating in this world, my first thought is to experiment with magic power and try to understand them. I really want to do a Rasengan at that time in a sudden flash of inspiration while I am busy doing my morning routine. It is impulsive. My attempt is nothing but foolish. I almost injured myself if not for my instincts warning me.

I cannot study something that the scientists of this world have been researching for a long time. It is like making a caveman understand oxygen, and have them create a martial art they can use to beat MMA fighters. Not that the caveman will lose.

I remove the funny thoughts from my head.

Not bad. Not bad. I must have a smug look on my face. My battles recently barely pushes my Gift at Grade 6. I should have the strength of a proper Intermediate Rank now without Cube AI’s assistance.

The new effects of the [Always Here] function to flash is incredibly awesome. I still need to experiment with the increased evasion rate of [Not Here] but so far so good.
