Chapter 20

“Sophia! Kill that bastard!”

That’s my next command.

Sophia's heartbeats reverberate in my mind. Through the master-slave bond, I sense the tempest of fear and disbelief that consumes her. She's convinced I've plunged into madness and desperation, willing to throw her into the jaws of death for my own escape.

“NO! Master, please!” Her voice is a raw, guttural cry, tearing from her hiding place. Tears stream down her face as she stammers, “I can't... I can't do it! I'll die! MASTER!”

Yet, the command is absolute. It propels her forward, her trembling hands grasping a hefty stone from the battlefield.

And when she gets to Bromrik, who’s now lying flat on the ground…

“MASTER! PLEASE!”

“JUST SHUT UP AND KILL THE DAMN GUY!”

“AAaaa!”

Ploosh!

With a heart-wrenching scream, she raises the stone and brings it crashing down onto that slavemaster’s head. Sophia’s Strength stat isn’t high, but it’s still enough to kill a man who’s defenseless like that.

And of course, Bromrik’s magic activates, sacrificing one of his own slaves.

“Good! Now do it again!”

Plooosh!

“AGAIN!”

Plesh!

The sound of smashing flesh along with another sickening thud echoes through the air.

“Master, what’s going on!?” Sophia shouts in panic and confusion, yet continues smashing Bromrik’s head non stop. “Why I’m I not attacked? Why is he not reacting!?”

“Ha! Because he can’t!” I shout, my voice resonating with rage and glee. “Now keep smashing his freaking head a thousand times until he stays dead!”

Plop!

Another squelching blow.

Yeah, my plan’s definitely working.

That bullet I fired earlier, it’s a paralyzing bullet containing the most potent neuro-toxins. Even in the smallest amount, it can block and damage nerves, leading to temporary full body paralysis. And that’s why Bromrik is now a helpless bag of meat, getting smashed over and over again by Sophia.

And more crucially, a paralyzed person cannot speak. Therefore, he cannot give any command to his slave to come help him. So, the plan is simple. I will continue holding off the slaves’ attacks, as their attention is all on me. Meanwhile, Sophia is free to kill their master until he runs out slaves to sacrifice.

Thwack!

Another bone-crushing sound echoes. The human body is such an instrument.

Another kill, easy.

Yes, Bromrik could have sent some slaves to kill Sophia earlier, but I guess that guy had all his attention fixed on me because of his blinding rage. And thanks to that, Sophia had the chance to act.

That ugly bastard, he was extremely arrogant, he thought he was invincible.

Yet, ironically, that arrogance has eventually led to his demise.

But… I cannot celebrate yet.

Drip.

I see drops of blood hitting the ground, and it was mine.

From my own nose, the blood is dripping out. The metallic scent gets into my mouth.

“Hah,” I laugh. “Who will go down first? You? Or me?”

Because, same as Bromrik, I don’t have that much time either.

I’m at my limit here.

Based on what I’m seeing, it takes 1 second for his revival magic to kick in. That means it will take around 400 seconds to kill that guy.

That’s over five minutes.

So for five minutes, I have to stay alive. Or else, both me and Sophia will die.

With another swift turn, I avoid death by another hair breadth. Yes, the elves' attacks are still relentless, with no sign of slowing down. Their attacks are always precise, swift and deadly.

Now I wonder how much longer can I last…

“NO! Sapphire!” I yell. “Overlock!”

"Do it!"

Whosssh!

Overclocking my AI chip. I have to!

Normally, overclocking an AI chip implanted inside the brain is not humanly possible. This is because the person will experience all sorts of adverse effects, like intense dizziness, or nausea, or passing out. This mechanism makes sure that the brain is always safe from its own self-destruction.

But I have mental state immunity. I cannot feel dizzy, I cannot hallucinate. I can overclock my AI chip as much as I wanted to.

The world sharpens once again. My senses scream to life, as if I've been jolted awake from a deep slumber.

With this, I can continue dodging the slaves’ attack for sure.

But, resisting status doesn’t mean my brain is indestructible. Along with the clarity is an ominous ringing in my ears, and an ethereal cacophony which seems out of place.

The thing is… my brain is going to be fried sooner or later. That’s because overclocking means going over the AI’s limit. And what do machines generate a lot when they are over working?

Heat.

An intense, blistering heat now engulfs my head, and it's agonizing.

This is definitely bad. Really, really bad.

Brains do not have pain receptors, which is why patients can undergo brain surgery while awake. Similarly, the brain does not have thermal receptors either. This means the brain itself cannot detect temperature changes.

However, the structures surrounding the brain, like the meninges (protective layers around the brain) and blood vessels, do contain pain receptors. So, basically, if I’m feeling the heat going up inside my head like I am now, my actual brain temperature is already way, way higher than that.

I’m just like a thinly stretched band, on the verge of snapping any moment now.

And then, as I pass the five minute mark…

One moon elf down, one standing, lunging at me with daggers in her hands.

Yet, I cannot dodge anymore.

My brain is fried, I’m paralyzed.

“Fuc…”

I can’t even say that damn word fully.

All I can feel now is the cold steel blade, piercing deep into my throat.

And then, the world turns black.
