Groggily, my eyelids flutter open, revealing a world that pulses in rhythm with the throbbing pain in my head and body.

“Master, you are awake!” Sophia’s familiar voice reaches my ears.

However, as my vision clears and I turn to look at her, confusion clouds my mind. “Who the hell are you?” I demand, staring at the woman before me. She’s not the Sophia I remember. “And where am I?”

“Master! How could you just forget your own slave like that?” The woman responds with a playful chuckle.

“Hahhh!? Sophia!??” My eyes widen in disbelief. In front of me is a breathtaking fox woman, her figure voluptuous and her beauty unparalleled. The human Sophia is already extremely beautiful. But now, with those fox ears and a fluffy tail, she seems ethereal, almost too beautiful to be real!

“Yes! It’s me!” Sophia responds, her face lighting up with a radiant smile. “How do I look? Do you like it? Do you prefer bigger or smaller breasts?”

Ack!

I cough at that sentence, my whole chest screaming in pain.

“Yes, bigger is okay.”

Well, I’m a bit taken aback by her sudden question, but as a man, I stay true to my beliefs.

And then, after our surreal reunion, Sophia takes the time to explain everything to me. We had successfully defeated Bromrik, and by some stroke of unimaginable luck, I had managed to stay alive with a knife in my neck and half a brain fried. With no time to waste, Sophia carried me to safety and sought the most skilled cleric to tend to my wounds.

And since then, my condition has slowly stabilized. Yet, even with the highest grade healing potions, it still takes two long weeks before I finally regain consciousness. Now, we are staying at an inn in Vera. With the chameleon earrings, Sophia has managed to take everyone here safely.

“Where are the children?” I inquire.

“Oh, it’s already night, so they are fast asleep right now.”

“I see,” I murmur, a wave of relief washing over me.

“And they worry about you a lot. Yumi even stayed up all night last night to watch over you.”

Yep, Yumi is such a nice girl. I’m glad that she’s with us now.

But strange… this shouldn’t be possible at all. As far as I can remember, I was so far gone. Recovery shouldn’t be possible even with the most advanced technology on Earth. Yet here I am, alive and kicking. Does this world have medicine so advanced that it can even heal a destroyed brain? Or could it be... something else?

So I check my status to see if there’s anything abnormal.

Nothing.

Beside gaining a few levels and basic stats, there’s nothing different in my status. I didn’t gain any new skills, let alone any skill that can possibly heal me from the state of death.

However, as Sophia brings me a glass of water and I take it, something catches my eye.

“Hold on, Sophia. Where is your ring??”

“Ah… about that…”

Sophia hesitates, her gaze drifting downward, fingers subconsciously caressing the empty space where her ring once sat. The silence in the room grows heavy.

“It’s gone,” Sophia finally whispers, her voice breaking slightly.

“What?” I'm taken aback, recalling the significance of that ring to her. “What do you mean, ‘gone’?”

I remember how she clung to that ring, refusing to part with it. She almost cried when Curtis demanded it.

“Well, I used it on you,” Sophia’s voice is barely audible.

“What? How? Explain that to me.”

Taking a deep breath, Sophia starts her tale.

The ring, as it turned out, was no ordinary piece of jewelry. It was a magical ring, a priceless gift from her mother on her sixth birthday, embedded with Phoenix Crystals—rare, crystallized tears of a dying Phoenix. It’s one of a kind and is basically priceless, as it held the legendary power of a Phoenix’s regeneration and resurrection capabilities.

“That’s why I had to use it... to save you.”

“Sophia…” I whispered, a lump forming in my throat.

So that was why! That was how I narrowly escaped death. Sophia, in her desperation, had given up her most cherished possession, her only tangible connection to her mother, to save me.

“I’m so sorry…”

“It’s alright, master. It’s already gone, so I don’t want to think about it anymore.” Sophia places her hand gently on my chest, and offers me a smile. “I’m just glad that you’re here, alive. That’s all that matters to me now.”

“Thank you, Sophia,” I mutter.

“You are welcome,” she says. “But at least, can I ask for a reward, master?”

“Oh, a reward? Yes. What is it?”

“Your love…”

She suddenly leans in and gives me a kiss on the lips.

Her lips are soft.

And her perfume is nice.
