If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong.

Back then, I had already considered the question: Why were the five guys from Hawksmoor Estate able to catch Curtis, even though he used his chameleon earrings to change his appearance? I could only think of two possible answers.

One: They had someone with a skill or item that allowed them to see through Curtis’ disguise. But this seemed very unlikely. After all, if such items or abilities are common, I wouldn’t be able to walk freely in the capital with my chameleon earrings. Disguise detection skills are extremely rare. I can’t imagine someone with that skill not having any nobility status. There’s also a possibility that one of them was a Master Enchanter, but as I checked their equipment, none of them had anything with more than basic enchantments.

But what about detection items? Even though the enchantments on the earrings are not perfect, they are still very advanced. Only a Grandmaster Enchanter could make something capable of seeing through the chameleon earrings, and such an item would be too precious to be in the hands of those men.

That left me with possibility number two: They had some sort of tracking or marking spell, item, or ability that they had secretly put on Curtis when he was at the Auction House.

Indeed, this is a much more plausible and easier method to deal with a disguised person. They didn’t need to see through his disguise; they just needed to ensure they tracked the right person. As far as I know, many bounty hunters possess Tracking skills. Additionally, there are various items that can be used to secretly track a target. For example, some special dust, or a stealth item with a tracking enchantment, functioning similarly to a GPS tracking or spying device popular on Earth.

But of course, I had already accounted for that. I eliminated the Rogue who was most likely to have those skills, and also carefully checked my body to see if they had put anything on me during that encounter. I found nothing. I thought my actions were perfect, my escape clean, and that there was no way they could hunt me down.

However, I was wrong. If I had been more careful and thought about it more thoroughly, I might have realized the tiny gap in my deduction. After all, why would that party need a healer if their only intention was to rob Curtis?

The answer is simple. Carmien is not a healer at all; he's a spirit user. The invisible light spirit that's following me right now belongs to him.

—--------------------

Now.

I have been hoping that Fufu could somehow catch and consume the spirit, but it appears that such feat is not feasible. This isn't surprising considering light attribute spirits are typically the fastest, and Fufu can only manage to chase it out of the room. As long as I'm here, it continues to linger around the house.

Therefore, there’s only one thing I can do.

“Sophia, listen closely,” I say, turning to Sophia to make my request. “I want you to take everyone out of here and go to the Enchantment Guild. Can you do that?”

“Sure. You want to ask Ariella for help?” she asks.

“Exactly.”

The gravity of our situation is clear: our enemy could be the son of a Duke, or the Duke himself. I must rely on someone of equal stature, and Ariella is the only person I can think of. My only hope is that Sophia can get everyone to safety in time.

“But what about you? Aren’t you coming with us?”

“No. The light spirit is tailing me; you'll all be at risk if I stay with you.”

“But-”

“There’s no other way, Sophia. I’m fast, so they won’t be able to catch me anytime soon. And I will think of something to deal with this annoying spirit,” I explain.

“Then… please be careful…”

“I will.”

I then carefully lift Lumi out of the bed and give her to Sophia. Sophia will have to carry Lumi because she’s too weak to walk.

However, as soon as I pick up my stuff and am ready to go...

“Fufu!!!” Yumi suddenly shouts, bursting out of the room. At the same time, a squeaking sound emanates from outside the house.

“Dammit!” I exclaim, rushing out with Yumi, fearing the worst.

And then, as I open the door, the scene outside Curtis' house confirms my fears.

Carmien stands there with a massive man in a black hooded cloak beside him. While Carmien is not my main concern, the hooded man sends chills down my spine. I can faintly sense the absurd amount of mana he has. He’s strong, both physically and magically. Towering at least two meters tall, his build is like that of a behemoth, making Carmien appear childlike in comparison.

As the man sees me, raises his hand, and when I look at what he's holding, my heart sinks.

“Fuuuuu!!!! Fuuuuu!!!” Fufu’s desperate cries pierce the air.

The man's enormous palm imprisons Fufu. The fluffelcabbage struggles desperately, its leaves turning red, its squeaking scream is heartbreaking!

Yumi tries to rush towards Fufu, but I hold her back.

“Nooo! Pleasee!” Yumi shouts, tears streaming down her eyes. “Please, don’t hurt it, please!”

“You are looking for me, right?” I shout to the man. “Let the fluffelcabbage and the children go. They are innocent!”

But the man just flashes me a wicked smile.

He tightens his grip.

Poof!

Fufu is crushed. Cabbage leaves fly everywhere.

“NOOOO!” Yumi screams, her knees dropping to the ground.

Fufu's spirit form, a ball of green light, manifests. However, Carmien instantly traps it with his spell.

As for me…

I feel my blood boiling, the bloodlust in my veins immeasurable.
