Chapter 36: Secret Book (2)

Old Lin stepped back and said in surprise, \”You\’re here, I thought you weren\’t coming.\”

\”Did you miss me?\” Lin Zhao Xi asked.

\”How could that be, from where in the world did that misunderstanding come from?\” Old Lin waved his hand, the word “scram” written all over his face.

It was unusually hot and humid. Dragonflies were flying low, and there were no people in the children\’s playground not far away. Lin Zhao Xi looked at her toes, everything she had thought of saying dying in her throat.

\”Where have you been these last few days?\” He closed the door and turned to leave, delivering a faint question over the wind.

Lin Zhao Xi’s spirits immediately soared. She cheerfully told Old Lin, \”Master, I\’m going to take the summer camp selection exam tomorrow!\”

  \”Oh.\”

\”Do you have any secret strategies ready for impartment?\”

Old Lin turned his head and looked at her with drooping eyes. Just when she thought he’d start hating her again, Old Lin snapped his fingers and said, “Come with me.”

Lin Zhao Xi followed her father, so happy that her bag bounced on her back with every step.

Old Lin returned to the security cabin. There was another man on duty that day.

\”What’s the secret strategy?\” Lin Zhao Xi waved to the man on duty, then approached him excitedly and asked.

Old Lin didn\’t say anything, just slowly walked over to a desk with his hands clasped behind his back and crouched down.

Lin Zhao Xi already had a bad feeling.

Old Lin slightly tilted the wooden desk and pulled a booklet from a corner. Patting off the dust on it, he turned around and handed it to her.

He said with a dramatic flourish, \”This ancestral secret can only be inherited by women.”

Lin Zhao Xi looked down in a daze. If she were drinking water, she’d have spurted it out.

In her hands was a white booklet engraved with the words \”Quick Mental Arithmetic Crash Course,\” the one that the mental arithmetic king sold for “only” 100 yuan in the park.

The other man in the cabin laughed and playfully lifted a floral fabric. Under the cover was a thick pile of Quick Mental Arithmetic Crash Courses.

\”What\’s this?\” Lin Zhao Xi asked bewilderedly.

\”We secretly confiscated them for him that day!\” With a grand wave of his hand, the security guard pointed at Old Lin’s back.

\”I have no idea what he’s talking about!\” Old Lin dramatically took a step back, overwhelmed with shock.

He deserved an Oscar.

Lin Zhao Xi looked at the white booklet, then at Old Lin, speechless.

You truly are my father, she can\’t help but think.

  ……

Because of the pressure on her mind, Lin Zhao Xi returned to the welfare home shortly afterward.

In her bag was the \”secret stratagem\” Old Lin gave her. No matter what, it was a pre-exam gift from her father. She picked it up and placed the “Crash Course” on the upper left corner of her table, hoping her father’s studious spirit would influence her.

Taking advantage of the time she had left before the lights were off, she once again flipped open her textbooks, ready to go over a few of the tougher focal points she’d picked out.

Before she knew it, the sky was dark again, and the building in front of her window was dwarfed under the starlit scenery.

Lin Zhao Xi yawned, her sight drifting to the \”secret tome\” on the far side of the table. A corner of its white cover was gently lifted by the evening breeze, revealing what seemed to be granite scrawls.

Surprised, Lin Zhao Xi dragged the ‘secret tome’ Old Lin gave her to her front and turned over the cover.

Written on the first page was a very common saying, \”Read a hundred times and the meaning becomes clear*.\” It fit well with the secret tome setting.

*Alternatively: The more you read, the more you learn.

Lin Zhao Xi, curious, continued turning the pages. And gradually, her curiosity was replaced by shock.
