“How are you not nervous?” Mrs. Lin sighed as she adjusted her hair. “And what is it about war? Say something nicer.”

Lin Zhao Xi only smiled, flashed guts pose1guts pose2 before dashing off with her school bag.

Early in the morning, there was a long queue of cars outside the experimental primary school. The long line looked spectacular from a distance.

Since today was the exam day, the experimental school would be used as an exam hall so all classes had been suspended for the day. There were parents dropping children off in cars, some arrived on bikes and before you knew it, the entire street in front of the school was fully packed.

On the way, Lin Zhao Xi heard many parents showering words of encouragement to their children such as; “Write the exam carefully”, “Relax, you will be fine”, “Good luck darling, you can do it” and so on.

Parents were trying to act relaxed and encouraged their children while the latter was at a loss and confused on how to react. Lin Zhao Xi reckoned that the parents were probably more nervous than their kids.

Today, she was wearing the uniform of the Red Star Elementary School. After so many days, she had finally gained the opportunity to enter the experimental primary school.

The school was made of European-style buildings, dyed in vermillion with large patches of grass around. The fountain within the school gate was turned on today, the sparkling water droplets noisily splattered under the morning sun. The students and their parents were gathered around it. They were all looking at the exam schedules in front of the fountain, the parents in the front of the group hurriedly pulled their children out of the crowd and walked them to their designated classrooms.

The exam system was organized in a former manner. Exam admission tickets and exam numbers would be used, the exams would also be reviewed altogether. Some school groups were even led by teachers. In an open space on the edge of the lawn, teachers from foreign schools were counting the number of students, handing out admission tickets, and explaining the key points of the exam. There were also students and teachers who helped answer any questions regarding the exam.

“What is the first step when receiving the exam papers?”

“Write your name and your admission number!”

“What do you do if you still have time left after finishing your exam?”

“Check your answers!”

“How do you check your answers?”

“Substitute the value into the equation!”

Listening to the deafening replies from the children, Lin Zhao Xi tightened her hold on her schoolbag, thinking the atmosphere of this exam was similar to Xiao Sheng Chu’s unified exam. As far as the eye could see, there were people everywhere.

In her last life, she was careless and entered the exam room without observing her surroundings. Now, she felt strange.

It’s only a summer camp selection test, why are there so many people?

However, even if there’s more people than expected and the competition became tougher, Lin Zhao Xi was already familiar with this place. She would vacate twenty minutes of her time to enter the examination room.

With that plan in mind, she went to find a spot near the gate. She then took out a small carton of milk she bought earlier and started drinking.

In fact, Lin Zhao Xi was embarrassed to admit that she was mainly waiting for Pei Zhi.

Ever since the mathematics teacher boasted about Zhang Liang, she wanted to find out what happened to Pei Zhi. After her encounter with him in the park, even though it’s one small maths calculation, Lin Zhao Xi knew that Pei Zhi was still the invincible genius of his generation.

Since Pei Zhi was so smart, how did Zhang Liang overshadow him?

Lin Zhao Xi was confused.

At the entrance of the experimental school, students and their parents came and went. Lin Zhao Xi waited and waited, she even saw Zhang Liang but there was still no sign of Pei Zhi.

The exam would start at half-past eight. At five past eight, Lu ZhiZhao arrived just behind Zhang Liang.

Lin Zhao Xi threw her milk carton into the bin when she saw Little Lu and prepared to go and greet him.

Unexpectedly, Little Lu ran past Zhao Lin Xi and stood at the front gate, and shouted, “Zhang Liang! Zhang Liang!”

Zhang Liang looked like a typical academic person: tall, thin, wore glasses, and black hair softly draped. He may seem like a gentle person but he’s someone hard to get close to.

Of course, she only assumed that he was hard to talk to based on his reaction with Lu Zhizhao.

Just now, when Lu Zhizhao called Zhang Liang’s name, Zhang Liang turned around and saw Little Lu. Zhang Liang was obviously hesitating before turning around as if nothing happened.

There was a boy walking beside Zhang Liang. The boy also glanced at the excited little fatty behind him and had a quick conversation with Zhang Liang.

It’s probably like;

“You know that Red Star Elementary School kid?”

“Don’t know anyone from that trash school.”

“Yeah, them coming here is a waste of time.”

Little Lu was a simple boy so he probably didn’t understand. But Lin Zhao Xi was a girl. She looked at his uniform and her own, and she understood immediately.

She quickly walked toward little Lu and wrapped her arm around his chubby neck. Lin Zhao Xi smiled and said, “Why are you running so fast? Didn’t you see Sister Xi? Have you greeted me yet?”

Lu Zhizhao pulled her hand away and said, “Who are you?!”

Lin Zhao Xi couldn’t resist the urge of pinching his bun-like face and asked, “What is your admission number? Sister Xi will take you to the examination room.”

Lu Zhizhao was a very simple-minded person. He immediately began to look through his school bag. With such interruption, Zhang Liang already disappeared into the crowd and Lin Zhao Xi blew a sigh of relief.

“Do you know Zhang Liang?” She thought for a while before finally asking.

“Yeah, we grew up together, we were good friends.”

“Oh—”

“My mom and his mom’s relationship was very good so we’re family friends. If I pass the exam and get selected for the summer camp, I can participate with him in the maths competition together.”

“Oh—”

“Why do you keep on saying oh?”

Lin Zhao Xi patted him on the shoulder and earnestly said,  “You two are destined to be unrequited love.”

Before Little Lu could reply, she walked into the crowd looking for the correct room, and Little Lu quickly followed her into the crowd of people.

When they finally got out of the hoard of people, Little Lu’s chest and back were soaked with sweat.

“There are way too many people,” Lin Zhao Xi was speechless.

They returned back to the front gate and Lin Zhao Xi started counting the number of rooms that would be used for the exam. She estimated that there are at least one or two thousand people who would be taking the test.

“Otherwise, what are you expecting?” Lu Zhizhao asked while fanning himself, “Zhong Ming’s class are very fond of the test results from the olympiad.

The Zhong Ming class was the best class in Anning Experimental Junior High. They only enrolled 70 students every two years. They said that if you got into the Zhong Ming class, you would have a better chance of entering a top prestigious school in the future.

“Eh? Isn’t the only way to get into the Zhong Ming class is to be in the champion team for the provincial competition?”

Little Lu gave her a dumb look.

“How many people can win the provincial championship?” He yelled before lowering his voice and whispered secretively, “This secret information is from a Zhong Ming class teacher. If you get into the Jin Cup summer camp, you will earn an additional 10 points and if you represent the summer camp, you will earn additional 20 points! Think about it, how much distance between you and other students can you open up?” 3In the last sentence the distance you can open up means the points difference between you and another student will become bigger. Therefore, you get a better chance of entering the Zhong Ming Class.

Inside information huh…

Lin Zhao Xi looked at the densely packed crowd outside the school and thought.

I’m afraid your secret information is not much of a secret. But, how do I not know this?

She thought about it and assumed that the reason was Old Lin didn’t want to stress her out while taking the exam. After all, Old Lin did buy a house near the experimental school.

The school district housing system 4 allowed Lin Zhao Xi to enter the experimental school smoothly so she never knew much.

*

Experimental Elementary School, Fifth Grade, Class 10.

Since the class was on the top floor, Lin Zhao Xi had to climb 5 sets of stairs to reach her classroom. After reaching the floor, she was panting heavily. Before walking in, Lin Zhao Xi checked the list of students that would be taking the exam in her class and of course, Pei Zhi was not on the list.

Behind the classroom, there was a whiteboard, storage boxes for students, a bookshelf in one corner, and a plant in another corner. At her current age, all the furniture was very tall. Lin Zhao Xi looked around, every piece of furniture overlapped with what she remembered and it made her feel nostalgic.

After 8:20, the invigilator5 walked in and the whole class became silent. The atmosphere became as cold as an ice cellar.

This was her first official exam after the rebirth. If she said she’s not nervous, then she would be lying.

The invigilator reminded everyone to place their belongings in the front or the back of the class, then emphasised on exam disciplines such as; peeking would be considered as cheating, anyone who was caught cheating would be straightly disqualified and permanently unable to attempt the test and their school would be notified.

Lin Zhao Xi looked at her left and right, all the desks were singular and spread far apart from each other. So even if someone wanted to peek at other students, it would be nearly impossible. After everyone finished organising their belongings, the classroom became silent. All the students were sitting on their seats like stone statues. The classroom was so silent that Lin Zhao Xi could hear her own heart beating loudly, it was very fast, she was indeed really nervous.

Suddenly the broadcast rang. The female speaker notified all students and invigilators that the examination would be starting shortly.

Soon after, the rustling sound of students taking test papers could be heard. Lin Zhao Xi tooked a deep breath and also picked up a test paper from the front desk.

The moment she received her test paper, she seemed to be unable to hear any sound around her. She placed her admission ticket on the left corner, wrote down her name, exam number, put down her pen and started the perusal.

The selection test prepared students for the Jin Cup Competition, therefore the type of questions were exactly the same. The paper used for the test was very thin. The questions were arranged from the easiest to the most difficult covering all mathematical topics in the upper grades of elementary school.

The teachers who made the test were very scheming. For example, in the fifth question, the question was easy but very time consuming, it might be added to disrupt students’ rhythm.

In the classroom, the invigilators began to hand out scrap papers.

The yellow paper was placed at the corner of her desk and at that moment the bell rang, resounding through the campus and indicating students to start writing.

When Lin Zhao Xi picked up her pencil, the world around her instantly became clear, she could only hear her heart beating fast, very fast.

Question 1: If all four consecutive natural numbers are composite numbers, what is the minimum value of the sum of these four numbers?

(a)100 (b)101 (c)102 (d)103

She quickly wrote down the answer C.

[T/N Note: The math questions in this chapter was pretty confusing so the translation may seem a bit dodgy]

The second question was about rearranging matchsticks and putting them into the correct order.

Lin Zhao Xi thought for a while and she started writing calculations on her scrap paper before finally choosing A as the answer.

Question 3: the sum of the 4 digit abcd and cdab is 3333 and the difference is 693, find cdba.

There were naturally some traps in this question. Lin Zhao Xi carefully wrote the answer in the correct order on the answer sheet.

Question 4…

Question 5…

As she read the questions and sorted out her thoughts, she was now solving questions without a hindrance.

….

Question 10…

Here Comes the final question.

Lin Zhao Xi observed the question carefully.

a,b and c are numbers between 0 and 9, however they are not 0 or 9. After converting the cyclic decimal 0.abc into the simplest fraction, how many different numerators are there?

She paused and started to think. This question is about the inclusion and exclusion of number theory mixed with decimals and fractions. The main difficulty in this question was to subtract the repetitive values after finding the total. She wrote down her calculation step by step and subtracted the repetitive value at the end to get a total of 660.

After she finished writing, Lin Zhao Xi put down her pencil and glanced at the clock. Only 20 minutes had passed, other students all around her were still working on the exam. She breathed a sigh of relief. She had to be patient, after all, she was competing with the city’s top students.

Then she started to carefully check her answers, and before you know it, the time had already struck 9:00 o’clock.

She finally put down her pencil, looked at her test one last time before sighing, the test was finally over.

She rubbed her face and looked at the invigilator. Under the watchful eyes of all the students, Lin Zhao Xi picked up her test paper and started walking up the podium.

“Handing in your paper?” The invigilator asked and glanced at her admission ticket. The gaze obviously paused on the word ‘Red Star Elementary School’.

“Yes, Teacher.”

“You still have time to check your answers,” the invigilator kindly reminded her.

“It’s all checked.”

Lin Zhao Xi smiled at the teacher. She then went back to her desk, packed up her things, and started to leave.

This was what old Lin taught her, if you are fully confident of answers, then there is no need to wait till the end. Leaving early is very tempting.

Lin Zhao Xi walked out of the classroom carrying her school bag on one shoulder. There was some distance between her classroom and the stairs, so when she was walking past the other classrooms, she got a lot of attention from students and teachers. However, there were also some empty rooms with test papers, it’s probably there’s already enough test papers for everyone, or the students in those classrooms had already finished their tests and

left.

The world is a big place, there is always someone better than you.

But she tried her best anyway.

By letting go of the burden in her heart, she started to relax. Leaving early also meant that she got more time to play with old Lin, which was a good thing.

She took out a pop candy from her front pocket, she got it by bribing Little Lu. She tore the packet a little bit and ate some, it tasted sour and she felt the crackling in her mouth.

She had memorized the layout of the Experimental Primary School and was now heading to the toilet. The toilet was located in the long hallway between two classroom buildings. Lin Zhao Xi walked around the corner, down the stairs, and stepped into a long hallway.

When she turned around the corner, she saw two boys standing opposite each other not so far away.

The wind in the long corridor caused both boys’ clothes to flutter around.

She squinted her eyes to take a good look at them.

The boy that had his back towards her was tall, thin, wearing a black shirt and glasses. Just by looking at his back Lin Zhao Xi immediately knew that the boy was Zhang Liang. Currently, Zhang Liang who previously talked trash about Red Star Elementary School Students was scolding the other boy.

And the boy facing her…

When the boy made eye contact with Lin Zhao Xi, the boy seemed to be telling her it’s best to not come any closer. That’s when Lin Zhao Xi realized that the boy was Pei Zhi.

Her heartbeat accelerated. Every time they met, their encounter was not planned by fate. She really didn’t know what fate wanted from her and Pei Zhi.
