That noon, Old Lin continued to make fun of her crying.

But neither she nor Old Lin talked about the “Mental Arithmetic Secrets” he had given her. Lin Zhao Xi only went through the book once, so she hadn’t learned much and was pretty embarrassed to talk about it. Old Lin probably regretted giving her the book and didn’t want to mention it; these types of people were commonly referred to as a tsundere.

After returning to the orphanage, Lin Zhao Xi put down her school bag, closed the door, and got ready to study. She opened the “Mental Arithmetic Secrets” book rewritten by Old Lin and carefully read through the table of contents. Old Lin rearranged the order of the topics.

The Mental Arithmetic ability had always been the main part of elementary mathematics. For example, memorizing the multiplication tables was to complete complex maths questions with less time, which helped for more complex problems later on.

Specifically, it was still beneficial, but the method the Mental Arithmetic King used was definitely a fraud. There were also some parents who let children purely practice mechanical calculations, which was also wrong.

Once, Old Lin, for a period of time, took her to play with mental arithmetic exercises. However, she was too lazy, and soon, Old Lin gave up.

Now, flipping through the book Old Lin wrote, that familiar handwriting, the lazy brush strokes, and the serious attitude made Lin Zhao Xi find the patterns between numbers inexplicably interesting.

She turned to page 20 and started to read the quick addition part. The core of quick addition and subtraction was rounding. But, since elementary schools forced students to use vertical calculations when children saw an addition and subtraction question, they subconsciously started writing the calculations on paper.

However, if you found the pattern between the numbers, you could calculate it mentally. By calculating mentally, it would train your brain and increase your memory capacity, which was very helpful when studying maths.

Lin Zhao Xi put down her pen and started to look at the practice questions.

Right at that moment, someone knocked on the dormitory door.

She turned her head and said, “Please come in.”

The door was pushed open and Lin Amin came running in while sweating profusely. “Sister Lin, Sister Lin, you’re back!”

“Yeah, I’m here, aren’t I?”

Lin Amin rushed to her desk, saw the Mental Arithmetic book, and was shocked. “Why are you still studying, isn’t the exam over?”

“Stop studying after the exam, then you ate today so you don’t have to eat tomorrow?”

Lin Amin had been playing all summer. His skin was now tanned and covered with sweat, his whole body was shining.  Lin Zhao Xi turned the small electric fan on her desk towards him.

Lin Amin looked at her as if she was a ghost. “Sister Lin, you weren’t like this before!

“Can’t be helped, sister has changed,”  Lin Zhao Xi said in a tired tone.

Lin Amin didn’t know what to say. He was speechless.

“Lin Amin, why are you looking for me in your spare time?”

Lin Zhao Xi suddenly realized, these couple of days, she had been focusing on studying and hadn’t seen Lin Amin for many days.

“Before, the dean said to not disturb you during your studies,” Lin Amin said with shock. “So, did you pass the test?”

“I just finished the exam, the result won’t come out so quickly,” said Lin Zhao Xi.

A complicated expression flashed on Lin Amin’s face, his expression was a bit worrying for a child of his age.

Lin Zhao Xi pointed at the empty bed and said solemnly to Lin Amin, “Sit down there.”

Lin Amin subconsciously walked over and sat down, just when he felt something was wrong, Lin Zhao Xi lightly coughed and pretended to be serious. “Sit upright.”

Lin Amin adjusted his hands, legs and sat upright.

“Be honest, why are you looking for me?”

“The Dean said…Shen…Auntie Shen was willing to adopt us both. We can be in the same family, but you don’t want to be with me. Is it wrong for us to be together?” Lin Amin hesitated at first but said to the end, his eyes starting to turn a little red. “Why don’t you want to?”

Lin Zhao Xi was not surprised. When Lin Amin came through the door, she roughly knew what Lin Amin was here for. These days, it’s not that she’s not aware of the institute’s attitude towards her. On one hand, they didn’t want to interrupt her exams, and on the other hand, they were thinking, how can a kid be this stubborn?

Many people tried to change her mind about being adopted, but she persisted, so they all backed off. Lin Zhao Xi was very grateful for this.

“It’s not that I don’t want to be with you,” she said to Lin Amin sincerely.

“Then why?”

“I’m very stubborn.”

“Huh?”

Lin Amin was at a loss. Lin Zhao Xi smiled. It reminded her of when Old Lin explained to children what a universe was.

“Yes, stubborn. Although I’m still young and my views on many things might not be correct, I have things that I want to do. It may not be important or trivial, but I just wanted to keep doing those things.”

Lin Amin was stunned, mouth opened wide. After a while, he yelled, “Mother Dean, what is Sister Xi saying?!”

Lin Zhao Xi glanced at the door. Suddenly it creaked open and the Dean walked wearing a plain shirt and with her arms crossed.

Lin Zhao Xi stood up from her seat.

“She means, she doesn’t want to go to Auntie Shen’s house with you. She insisted not to,” the dean said in an unhappy tone.

Lin Zhao Xi laughed. Mother dean was always calm and collected, this was the first time where mother dean’s tone was sour and unsatisfied.

“But she’s not wrong, she’s qualified to be this persistent,” the Dean said seriously.

The summer wind was hot, there were green trees and cicadas outside the window. The sound was like a wave one after the other.

“Thank you,” Lin Zhao Xi said as her ears started to go a little red and numb.

The Dean widened her eyes. “The point is, can you accomplish what you promised?”

That was to get into the Olympiad team.

Lin Zhao Xi nodded. “Yeah!”

*

The results for the selection test for the JinBei summer camp would come out around July 1, just around the start of summer vacation.

After finishing the selection exam, the school’s final exam would start.

On Monday, there would be the Chinese test, on Tuesday, the Maths test, and on Wednesday, the English test.

As a past college student, Lin Zhao Xi had been immersed in American Drama for a long time, so she found English more straightforward than maths.

Needless to say, she’s also very good at mathematics.

But Chinese…Lin Zhao Xi looked at her ugly handwriting on the table, she was getting desperate.

Sure enough, after the final Chinese exam, the Chinese teacher called Lin Zhao Xi to her office and taught her more calligraphy. After considering her family situation, the teacher decided to give Lin Zhao Xi a Pang Zhong Hua Pen Calligraphy book to practice her writing, hoping that she would practice during the summer vacation and check her results after the holiday.

Lin Zhao Xi could only nod, in her heart she was thinking: Which kid would want to be caught walking with a calligraphy book?

After the exams, the elementary students should be in a relaxed state. But, the Red Star Elementary school had make-up classes to study the next semester course in advance and would not officially end until June 30th.

Lin Zhao Xi enjoyed going to school, her favorite activity was to hang around the canteen.

The canteen had various merchandise such as snacks, stationery, and various small toys. With just 30 cents, you could buy a water ripple card that could change patterns, a plastic spinning top, and snacks.

These things were often overwhelming and children were good at destroying things, so every day the canteen became a mess.

At the start, Lin Zhao Xi asked the boss of the canteen whether she could work here as an accountant and keep track of the money in the canteen.

The boss was unwilling. What the hell?! The accounting book is the most important thing in every shop! Who would let an elementary school student handle it?

Of course, Lin Zhao Xi knew her request would likely be declined, but she didn’t leave and continued to stay in the canteen.

In the canteen, some items had labels and some did not. After class, she would always rush to the canteen and record the prices of all tagged commodities.

But, the owner of the shop was too lazy. There were way too many items and some items that were buried underneath didn’t have any labels on them.

The students only took the items and walked up to the counter. Lin Zhao Xi didn’t know the prices for some items, so she couldn’t directly calculate the prices at first.

Meanwhile, the boss only needed to glance at the item once, and she could almost immediately determine the price of the item without an actual thought process.

She stood at the sidelines, at first feeling frustrated because if the boss could just determine the price at a glance, then she wouldn’t need an accountant.

However, it’s probably because she had been more accustomed to Old Lin that she had become more stubborn.

She didn’t leave and stood beside the counter. She remembered the price of 2 or 3 items, so she used subtraction to find the price of another item.

At the start, she couldn’t remember the location of the items, so every time she saw a new item, she would have to run to the back to identify the price. By the time she returned, the children would have already left with the item.

“Maths booklet is 80 cents, the lollipop is 50 cent, but the sticky claw is⎯⎯”

Lin Zhao Xi paused and caught her breath. She then turned towards the canteen owner and asked, “Auntie, how much did you charge the customer?”

“Why should I tell you?” The auntie rolled her eyes at her.

Lin Zhao Xi smiled. “If you tell me I can help you work!”

The auntie, of course, ignored her.

But the second time when someone bought a sticky claw, the owner deliberately said 70 cents for the sticky claw, so Lin Zhao Xi gratefully recorded it onto her notebook.

Almost all products sold in the canteen were popular, while the unpopular items were at the bottom of the pile. After spending 6 hours at the canteen, she had figured out the prices for the most sold items.

Even though she was lacking in experience, her memory and item retrieval speed were way superior then the auntie who had worked at the canteen for more than 10 years.

Often, Auntie Zhang would already figure out the cost and would already find the change. But at the end of school, where children often came to the canteen in groups, it would take a while to calculate the full cost of all items.

Auntie Zhang would calculate the cost while also finding the change. Lin Zhao Xi also stood by the counter and counted silently, she found out that the owner had never made any mistakes, which was awesome.

It’s hard to say what’s good about mentally calculating simple addition and subtraction. But it could definitely strengthen the foundation for mental calculations, it was always good to have a strong foundation.

The second day when the canteen opened, Lin Zhao Xi arrived on time and gave the owner a salute. Auntie Zhang was holding fried dough sticks, and when she saw her, she almost dropped the fried dough sticks on the floor.

Compared to the first day, the second day was way better. But, memory was a very strange thing. After a night’s sleep, she forgot the prices of some unfamiliar items.

Gradually, she stopped using simple additions and forced herself to find simple rules between the numbers to quickly calculate the answers.

In the beginning, it was very hard, for example, 1 nine yuan plus 3 two yuans. She was accustomed to using simple addition, but this time she would round the total then reduce the amount.

Although the way of thinking was very hard to change, it’s like inertia, when you push it, it would go faster and faster like a snowball.

By the time school ended in the evening and students came to buy things, she’s already standing by the counter and could calculate faster than Auntie Zhang.

The auntie saw her quickly calculate the prices, feeling unconvinced and angry, but she didn’t drive her away and instead wanted to beat Lin Zhao Xi at her own game.

A child grabbed some little cat ears 1 and two exercise books.

When the cookies were weighed, Lin Zhao Xi quickly calculated the product of the weight and unit price. She suddenly shouted, “ 6 yuans and eighty cents!”

The child handed her 10 yuan and she immediately replied, “That’s 3 yuans and 20 cents change!”

The auntie was a bit slower at the calculation and stared at Lin Zhao Xi.

Round two: a pair of twins walked up to the counter. They each got a cold drink and mineral water, the younger sister also had tennis balls. Lin Zhao Xi was thinking that she remembered the price of the cold drinks better than the Auntie.

“12 yuans!” Lin Zhao Xi said to the younger sister.

The Auntie was just about to say twelve but decided to keep her mouth shut.

Round three: a kid started taking some pens and notebooks. Lin Zhao Xi was already calculating before he walked up to the counter. However, the kid started putting half of the things back, so she had to backtrack.

Seeing this, Lin Zhao Xi guessed that this kid was buying prizes for tomorrow’s class. She went to the kid and patted his back, she wanted to confirm her speculation.

The class had a budget of 60 yuans, and he needed to buy the first, second, and third prize among 22 students. It’s almost like a maths olympiad competition for lower elementary school students.

She quickly did the calculation and helped the kid pick the prizes. She took the prizes to the counter and said to Auntie Zhang, “10 exercise books, 8 erasers, and 4 pens, a total of 51 yuans and 60 cents.”

“It’s 51 yuans!” The owner corrected her coldly.

“Why?” Lin Zhao Xi was stunned, she was not sure what mistakes she made.

“It’s my shop, and I’m fine discounting the items!” Auntie Zhang said displeasingly.

…..

Because of that day, Lin Zhao Xi no longer wanted to go to school.

However, Friday was the ending ceremony, so she had to go to school, three students would be awarded for their good behavior or achievements in the school and everyone got summer holiday homework.

Three Best Students Award…she really didn’t care about this award. Before her rebirth, the young Lin Zhao Xi already had an amazing history of fighting other kids, so no matter how much the teachers favored her now, it’s impossible for her to get the award.

Unsurprisingly, she got full marks for Maths and English, but her Chinese was a bit ugly. The teacher mercilessly deducted 10 points from her test for that messy handwriting. With additional deduction from the comprehension section, she only had 85 points, which was not enough to be on the top student ranking.

Lu Zhizhao honorably won first place in the class, he also received the Three Best Student certificate.

While they were all lined up at the sports field, the experimental school next door was also giving out awards. The sound of music and the principal listing out names could be faintly heard. The sun was hot, although her name hadn’t been called, she imagined the scene of Pei Zhi accepting awards and giving a speech in the experimental school.

Must be very cool!
