Delusions (2)

Xu Pinyu was eight years old at the time, and like all children at that age, she was filled with longing and anticipation for amusement parks.

Her mother dressed her up in a brand new dress, tied her hair back, and made her look like a doll.

Xu Pinyu’s only thought back then was to get out of the house and go to the amusement park with her father, oblivious to her mother’s sad expression.

The sky was as heavy as an iron block as winter progressed, and the branches of the dead trees were crisscrossing the ground.

The amusement park was filled with laughter, and underneath the clown’s red nose was a face covered in paint.

Xu Pinyu looked up in confusion when the hand holding her suddenly loosened.

Her father handed her a balloon, knelt down and ruffled her head, saying, “Good Yumao1, stand here and wait for dad. Don’t wander off.”

When he turned around, Xu Pinyu tugged at the corner of his coat.

But she let go again.

The moment the material of the coat pulled away from her fingertips was so slow that it felt like the whole winter had passed.

She nodded heavily, “Mm, you have to come back quickly.”

She didn’t know how much time had passed. Xu Pinyu scuffed the ground with her shoes and suddenly saw a boy sitting on a bench not far away.

He looked about the same age as her, dressed neatly, and his skin was as white and sticky as a rice cake.

Xu Pinyu ran over and sat next to him, but only stared at him.

The boy sensed the gaze beside him and furrowed his eyebrows slightly, not intending to pay any attention to her.

Xu Pinyu tilted her head to look at him, “Are you waiting for your mom and dad too?”

There was no answer.

Xu Pinyu didn’t give up and asked again, “What’s your name?”

Instead of being frustrated by the boy’s silence, she smiled at him and said, “Let’s race to see whose daddy comes first, okay?”

Xu Pinyu was chattering and dangling her legs, and underneath her white socks was a pair of red, round-toe shoes.

His eyes were always on the ground, and he didn’t say a word.

Until a middle-aged man walked up to him and asked, “Young Master, are you ready to go?”

The boy nodded and stood up.

Xu Pinyu paused for a moment, then shouted, “Hey!”

The boy turned back and finally met her eyes.

She smiled, handed over the upward floating thread in her hand, and said, “You win, this balloon is for you.”

He stared at Xu Pinyu’s face for a few seconds before shifting his eyes to her hand. Only then did he raise his arm and take the balloon.

After the boy left, she yawned and rubbed her stomach. She was a little hungry.

She began to think about whether to have curry rice or omelet rice, and what flavor of pudding to choose.

Eventually, her thoughts turned into fearful crying.

The amusement park was closed, the lights of the merry-go-round went out, and the even clowns went home.

Only the giant Ferris wheel was still spinning in solitude.

“I’ll take her to the orphanage, you guys keep looking.” The policeman on duty put down the phone.

He looked at Xu Pinyu, who was sitting in the corner, clutching the corner of her skirt, her eyes red and sobbing.

He sighed and thought that it must be another unscrupulous parents who threw their child away again.

The police uncle told her to wait in the orphanage, and in a few days her mother and father would come to take her home.

Xu Pinyu was obedient and waited without making any fuss, but a few days passed and still no one came to get her.

The other children said to her, “See, your mom and dad don’t want you anymore.”

She first threw building blocks at them, then sat down on her butt, and bawled her eyes out.

Xu Pinyu couldn’t understand why her biological parents had abandoned her.

She blamed it on the fact that she didn’t stay put that day and gave the balloon to someone else.

Her father got so angry that he didn’t come to pick her up.

But now, if she wouldn’t wait there, dad won’t be able to find her.

So Xu Pinyu tried to sneak out of the orphanage by all means, but every time, she was carried back by a limping uncle at the gate and locked her up in her room for several days, in order to make her learn from her mistakes.

But Xu Pinyu simply wouldn’t take it lying down. She even tried to escape and was starved once, but she still refused to make a compromise.

The children in the orphanage said she was lucky. Many of the children were 12 or 13 years old, but no one still took them away, and they were destined to grow up here.

She had only been there for less than three months when she met someone who wanted to adopt her.

Xu Pinyu clearly remembered that the weather was so cold that her teeth were clattering, and she was wrapped in a cotton padded coat.

She was once again carried on the shoulders of the crippled uncle, and she cried out as she hit him on the back.

Then, out of nowhere, someone appeared and told the crippled uncle to put her down.

Then a woman appeared, a very beautiful woman, who was very gentle.

She took off her gloves and gently wiped the tears from Xu Pinyu’s face.

Then the woman took out a pen and paper from her pocket, wrote down a row of words, and tore it then gave it to her.

Xu Pinyu wasn’t even fully literate at the time, so she didn’t know what was written on the paper, and was a little confused.

Chen Qiuya seemed to have thought of this, smiled, and took back the paper. She grabbed her fine wrist and gave her own gloves for her to put on.

Xu Pinyu looked at the gloves on her hand. The gloves were big, and she paused for a moment.

The warmer they were, the more she wanted to cry.

Not long after being locked in the room, Uncle Crippled pulled her to the director’s office.

When she walked to the door, the director’s angry voice was close to her.

Xu Pinyu clearly heard him say, “Her father owes a lot of gambling debts, and now the couple have fled without a trace, presumably for fear that it is inconvenient to bring a child…”

Uncle Cripple knocked on the door and pushed Xu Pinyu inside.

She was a bit stunned, understanding their conversation.

It turned out they wanted to adopt her.

Looking at the woman smiling at her, she pursed her lips.

Xu Pinyu couldn’t stand it any longer, pulled off her gloves and threw them on the ground, shouting, “I don’t want a mute to be my mom!”

As soon as the words left her mouth, she turned around and ran away.

The director came back to his senses and hurriedly said, “I’m sorry, this child had such a bad temper and I can’t even control her.”

He then asked, “Why don’t you choose another one? We have many other children in the orphanage who are well-behaved and obedient.”

Li Tong turned his head to seek Chen Qiuya’s opinion, “I also think that it would be better to choose another one.”

Chen Qiuya lowered her eyes to think for a moment. Then she shook her head, raised her eyes to look at him, and gestured, ‘I really like this child. The doctor told me back then that the one I lost was also a girl, and maybe, she’s just as lovely as her.’

At Chen Qiuya’s insistence, she and Xu Pinyu began to get to know each other. If they felt it was suitable, they would proceed with the adoption process.

She came to the orphanage frequently and took Xu Pinyu to visit the aquarium, bought her clothes and dolls, and wanted to give her the best of everything.

But Xu Pinyu has always kept her little face straight, silent and quietly resisting.

Li Tong was Chen Qiuya’s cousin and the one who helped her escape her past and start a new life in the city.

He didn’t like Xu Pinyu very much. After all, no one liked such an unreasonable child.

So when Chen Qiuya peeled a shrimp and put it in Xu Pinyu’s bowl, she immediately pinched it out, saying, “I don’t eat this.”

Li Tong slammed his chopsticks and raised his voice a bit, “Eat!”

Just when Chen Qiuya wanted to mediate, she saw Xu Pinyu wringing her face, on the verge of tears.

Xu Pinyu picked up the red shrimp and put it in her mouth.

She felt sorry for this child. Even if her expression was tough, her heart must be as soft as a feather.

None of them knew that Xu Pinyu was allergic to seafood. After dinner, she passed out in the car.

When she arrived at the hospital, she had a fever that lasted all night.

Her body itched terribly, and she struggled to scratch herself in her sleep, but Chen Qiuya restrained her.

Li Tong looked at the child with remorse and went out to smoke a cigarette.

He thought to himself, ‘This child is really stubborn, even if she knows she’s allergic, she doesn’t say anything.’

She suffered from an unexplainable discomfort.

Xu Pinyu woke up in the afternoon of the next day.

Turning her head, she saw the woman lying on the side of the bed sleeping, still holding her hand tightly.

She suddenly felt her nose tingle.

Chen Qiuya was a very light sleeper. When she felt the movement on the bed, she got up immediately.

She nervously touched Xu Pinyu’s forehead, her expression seemed to ask her if she still felt uncomfortable.

Xu Pinyu sniffled, and in a dry voice she opened her mouth, “I don’t want to change my name.”

Chen Qiuya froze for a moment, then understood what she meant, and her eyes slowly moistened.

She smiled and nodded her head.

Tears streamed silently onto the pillow, and Xu Pinyu choked back a sob, “And, don’t leave me behind.”

Chen Qiuya wiped her eyes. She took out a pen and paper, finished writing a row of words, and stuffed them into Xu Pinyu’s palm.

Later, when Xu Pinyu learned a lot of words, she then took out the paper that Chen Qiuya had given her.

On it was written, ‘I promise, we will live together forever.’

Spring was coming.

Li Tong was about to leave the country for work and arranged for Chen Qiuya and her to move to another city.

Chen Qiuya was a little worried, but Li Tong told her, “The most dangerous place is also the safest place, and so many years have passed. Instead of hiding far away, you can be around him, and he won’t expect it.”

Xu Pinyu was confused after hearing that. Anyway, she just knew that they were moving.

Having just moved to this bustling city, Xu Pinyu realized that the place she used to live in was really small.

Chen Qiuya only accompanied her twice on her way to school. Fortunately, it wasn’t too far from the school, so she took note of it very carefully.

At the end of the school day, groups of parents stood outside the school gates to pick up their children, but Xu Pinyu always went home alone with her backpack.

One day, she realized that someone was following her, so she quickened her pace, and the person behind also walked quickly.

Xu Pinyu panicked and looked back.

It was a boy.

He ran up to her, “Hey, are you new here?”

Xu Pinyu stared at him without saying a word.

“My name is Wei Yixun, I live right in front of you.” He said, pointing the way.

When Wei Yixun saw that she didn’t say anything, he said, “You don’t even exchange names with me, it’s very rude.”

She pursed her lips, “Xu Pinyu.”

After saying that, she saw Wei Yixun stretching out his hand to her, his palm facing her.

Xu Pinyu froze, “Why?”

Wei Yixun grinned, “High five.”

Xu Pinyu gave him a blank look and walked forward.

Wei Yixun followed, “Hey, let’s go home together from now on, I’m a bit scared to be alone.”

In her mind, she thought he was a scaredy-cat.

Xu Pinyu was ten years old when she got into her first fight with a classmate.

Chen Qiuya was invited to the principal’s office and saw her standing against the wall. Her hair in disarray, her arm scratches had been smeared with medicine, and she twisted her head with a stubborn look on her face.

She actually fought with two boys, which shocked Chen Qiuya a little.

Xu Pinyu refused say what happened.

The parents of the boys, who were also mothers, were scolding her.

Chen Qiuya was not happy to hear their words, but she could not argue back.

The teacher and principal tried to persuade Xu Pinyu to apologize, but she was stubborn and didn’t even look at them.

Wei Yixun, who had been hiding outside the principal’s office, decided to muster up courage.

He suddenly opened his mouth and shouted, “Teacher, I heard it, it’s their fault…”

All eyes were focused on the door, making him shrink back nervously, but he continued, “They kept laughing at Auntie for being mute, so Yumao started fighting with them.”

Everyone was momentarily stunned.

The mothers of the two boys asked for proof, and were answered with cries.

Xu Pinyu rolled her eyes.

Chen Qiuya smiled at her expression and then used the pen and paper on the table to write, ‘My child did nothing wrong, she doesn’t need to apologize. It’s me who didn’t teach her the right way to solve things. Therefore, I apologize to the two parents, and I will teach her to face slander with grace in the future.’

One of the mothers said in dissatisfaction, “Hey, what do you mean!”

But she was stopped by the teacher and another parent, so she could only stop.

Chen Qiuya ignored them, wrote another piece of paper, and handed it to Xu Pinyu.

She asked her, ‘I’ll cook you red bean soup when you get home, okay?’

Xu Pinyu squeezed the paper and nodded.

Even when she went home alone, she never complained about Chen Qiuya.

Probably because she felt that having a mom who cooked a lot of good food for her every day was a great happiness.

Chen Qiuya pulled her out of the principal’s room.

Outside the door, Wei Yixun smiled brightly and extended his hand towards her.

This time, Xu Pinyu quickly high-fived his palm.

It’s the height of summer again, when the living were put on the iron plate to be roasted.

Since Xu Pinyu transferred to Dezhi Academy, she resumed going home with Wei Yixun after school.

The subway station was air-conditioned, and they felt the cold wind brushing against them as they walked down the steps.

Wei Yixun didn’t know what came to his mind and said, “When you were a kid, you were a bit more aloof. Why did you grow astray when you grew up?”

Xu Pinyu glanced at him, “I was never aloof. It’s just that I’m too lazy to talk to you, okay.”

Wei Yixun looked at her with extreme disdain, “Oh, dealing with me for so many years, you really worked hard.”

During rush hour, the subway station was crowded as usual.

While she was joking with Wei Yixun, the figure reflected on the glass door passed behind Xu Pinyu.

Stunned, she turned her head to look at him.

In the midst of the crowd, even as he stood quietly, Xu Pinyu could not take her eyes off him.

Unlike all the youthful youngsters, he had a very unique flavor, like a snowfall in midsummer.

Wei Yixun took out his phone, looked at the screen, and blurted out a profanity.

Xu Pinyu subconsciously turned back and asked him, “What’s wrong?”

“I’m going to school, you go home first.” Wei Yixun said as he stepped back.

She waved her hand, “Bye, see you tomorrow.”

The train arrived at the station, and people were pouring in like a sea.

At first, Xu Pinyu intentionally tried to move towards the door he entered, but then she was squeezed by the crowd.

She was not sure of her position, but she held on to the person next to her.

Xu Pinyu slowly looked up and hurriedly let go of her hand, “Ah, sorry.”

Shen Youbai just glanced at her and didn’t reply.

She had never been thankful for a crowded train, and this was the first time.

In the black glass window in front of her, the distance between them was so close that her shoulder was about to touch his arm.

At this moment, she could no longer guess why Shen Youbai would take this subway line.

Xu Pinyu looked down, staring at her shoes and his.

If wishes were effective, she would like this train to run at a speed of one centimeter every ten seconds.

Shen Youbai lowered his eyes.

Because of the heat, she tied up all her hair, revealing the back of her neck, her earlobes, and her collarbone.

The summer school uniform shirt was somewhat thin and see-through.

At the age of eight, Xu Pinyu fantasized having a happy home.

And then, she got it.

Now, Xu Pinyu fantasized getting Shen Youbai.

But how?

Delusions were born in the smallest places, growing wildly in the dark side of the human heart.

In the end, they wither on the breath of joy.
