He agitated his divine sense and sent out a wave of spiritual fluctuations in a particular frequency outwards from his position. The waves return to him after rebounding on obstacles. They bring with them information about the obstacle.
This method is safer in that while it can be sensed by others, they won't be able to lock on to him through it. The disadvantage is that it is many times slower than the use of divine sense.
