Only the sound of boiling water pierced through the store that was enclosed in silence. Knowing that Ling Huaan’s eyes couldn’t see, Jiang Chengyan positioned himself to guard the egg. He didn’t realize that he didn’t need to ‘guard’ it until he heard a ding.

Ling Huaan fumbled for a small plate, handed it over to Jiang Chengyan and said, “Take out the eggs and peel the shell.”

Jiang Chengyan obediently did so, and soon the two eggs were peeled. “Done, here you go.”

Ling Huaan took out a clean handkerchief. “Wrap the eggs and let it rest on your face.”

Jiang Chengyan was startled, but he replied with a smile. “Don’t bother, it’s almost healed.”

“He’s lying. If he’s really okay, why is he wearing a mask?”

Ling Huaan’s eyes never left Jiang Chengyan. “Will you do it yourself, or would you rather have me to do it for you?”

Jiang Chengyan hurriedly snatched the handkerchief. “I’ll do it. I don’t want to bother boss.”

Ling Huaan scoured the shelf and took a pack of instant noodles. After peeling the cover, he inserted another egg in, added seasoning and boiling water, then sealed it again with a fork.

Jiang Chengyan: “Eat less spicy food so you won’t get angry easily.”

Looking at the spicy beef noodles placed in front of him, Jiang Chengyan was surprised and his heart was touched. He used to buy spicy beef noodles instead of instant noodles. Because Ling Huaan couldn’t see, he thought he didn’t know.

“Thank you.”

“That’s a clean handkerchief. Two eggs and one bowl of noodles should be enough. Go home and drink milk before you go to bed.”

Jiang Chengyan couldn’t stop the corners of his mouth from rising. “Okay.”

“Boss, this guy is smiling at you like an idiot. I bet he has bad intentions.” Wang Lei couldn’t help whispering in Ling Huaan’s ear.

Ling Huaan didn’t speak. He searched for his phone, then plugged his earphones so he could listen to music.

Jiang Chengyan stopped talking. He moved a stool so he could sit in front of the cashier and ate the instant noodles.

After having his fill, Jiang Chengyan was preparing to leave when he heard Ling Huaan speak. “Jiang dui, is your current case quite difficult to handle?”

When he heard his question, he tread back his steps and answered awkwardly: “Boss, police regulations states that no information about the case should be disclosed to outsiders.”

“My name is Ling Huaan.”

“Some time ago, I was discussing business with a gallery owner. He owes me a lot of money, but I can’t seem to contact him these days. I suspect that he wants to run away from his debt, then I remembered Jiang dui and thought maybe you could check it for me.”

When Jiang Chengyan heard that Ling Huaan was being scammed, he felt like beating someone. “Gallery owner? Which gallery? What’s the owner’s name?”

“Changping Gallery, 73 Zhonghua South Road, Beijing. The owner’s name is Jiang Changping.”

“It’ll be easy to inquire since you have the name and address. I’ll go there myself tomorrow.”

Ling Huaan raised his eyebrows. “Jiang dui, don’t you wanna ask me if I have an IOU?”

Jiang Chengyan was startled. He immediately believed Ling Huaan, and this subconscious choice completely contradicted his usual professional habits. “Does Boss Ling have IOU?” he asked.

“Yes.” Ling Huaan took out a debt note signed by the headless ghost from his pocket and handed it to Jiang Chengyan.

Jiang Chengyan took the IOU and examined it. He hesitated and asked, “Are you sure the signature and fingerprint below are Jiang Changming’s?”

“My friend was present when it was signed. He saw his ID card, so I’m sure it’s Jiang Changming himself. I also felt his fingerprints.” The fingerprints were actually Ling Huaan’s.

Jiang Chengyan let out a sigh of relief. “Then I’ll take this IOU with me for the time being. I’ll give it back when I get the news.”

“Okay, thank you.”

“My pleasure. I serve the people.”

Jiang Chengyan carefully placed the IOU into his pocket. Seeing that Ling Huaan didn’t speak anymore, he hesitated for a moment and said, “Well, if there’s nothing else, I’ll head back first.”

Ling Huaan took out his mobile phone and said, “Jiang dui, please leave your number.”

“188****9032.”

“And the name?” Ling Huaan asked naturally.

“Jiang Chengyan. Jiang of river, Cheng of bearing, and yan of color. Remove that yan character beside the page.” Jiang Chengyan responded plainly.

To Jiang Chengyan’s surprise, although Ling Huaan was blind, he could type his name accurately.

Looking at the number on top of the name, he couldn’t help asking: “Are these numbers a serial number?”

“Yes. I can’t see, so it’s an identifier so I could accurately dial out the number.”

“What happened to your eyes? Is there still hope for treatment?”

“It can’t be cured.”

“Sorry…”

“I’m used to it.” Ling Huaan retracted his hand holding the phone and said, “Jiang dui, it’s getting late. Go back and rest early.”

“Okay, I’ll be leaving first. If there’s news tomorrow, I… By the way, I still don’t have your number.”

“I’ll send you a message later.”

“Good.” Jiang Chengyan was a little excited. “That… Although the police station is just across the road and nobody would dare do illegal stuff here, if you ever run into someone, you mustn’t resist. Your life is your priority. You can say what you wanna say after. And if you encountered something you can’t do on your own, call me anytime. I’ll come if I’m available.”

“Thank you. Then, please take care, Jiang dui.” Ling Huaan was not polite at all.

“No trouble. The police and the people are relatives.”

Although Jiang Chengyan often came to buy things and would exchange a few words with Ling Huaan, Ling Huaan’s response was always cold, so they don’t talk much. Ling Huaan’s sudden change made Jiang Chengyan feel flattered and elated.

With Ling Huaan’s silence, Jiang Chengyan said,  “I’ll go first. See you tomorrow.”

“See you.”

The door was pushed open and closed. Ling Huaan looked out of the window, seeing nothing but darkness.

“Boss, that guy’s still looking at you. He almost hit the bus stop just now. I’m really sure he has bad intentions.” Wang Lei began to nag in Ling Huaan’s ear again.

“Wang Lei, how long do you have until your reincarnation?” Ling Huaan asked.

“63 days to go.” Wang Lei answered honestly.

If it’s a normal death, a soul reaver would appear and they’ll immediately be sent to the Underworld to reincarnate. However, if their cause of death was abnormal, they will accumulate resentment and become resentful ghosts.

The Underworld would take them away, but they wouldn’t be reincarnated. Instead, they would be sent to a place called Wasteland to purify their resentment in a special way. The process is very painful, and it would last for nine-nine and eighty-one days.

If they weren’t successfully purified, they would stay there for eternity.

Of course there’s another way, and that’s to find the souls in the world of the living, assist them in finding out the truth, and resolve their grievances so they could get the chance to reincarnate. This way, the pain of purifying their resentment could be avoided and truth would be found. This was the only way to get the best of both worlds.

They only have 81 days to do that. If 81 days have passed and the resentment still hasn’t been resolved, the Yin discrepancy will appear and take them to the Wasteland.

“Wang Lei, do you have any unfulfilled wishes?”

Ling Huaan looked at Wang Lei. He was a thin student; he died after he became an adult. He was killed by the murderer because he was a witness.

After he died, he wandered around the crime scene until he was hit by Ling Huaan who was passing by. Because Wang Lei was an orphan and couldn’t afford his commission rate, Ling Huaan asked him to help at the supermarket and become his eye until it’s time for his reincarnation.

Wang Lei rubbed his head and blushed. “Actually, I don’t have any wish. I just want to go to the seaside, but I haven’t been able to…”

Ling Huaan nodded and said, “Before you leave, I’ll take you there.”

Wang Lei’s eyes brightened and floated to say, “Boss, meeting you was the luckiest moment of my life. Thank you!”

Ling Huaan just shook his head, took out his phone, composed a message and sent it to Jiang Chengyan, “Ling Huaan.”

As soon as Jiang Chengyan got on the car, he heard the SMS notification. He opened his phone and read it. He couldn’t hold back his smile as he saved the number.

Jiang Chengyan hesitated for a while and replied, “Thanks for the noodles and eggs today.”

Jiang Chengyan was worried and waited, then recalled that Ling Huaan couldn’t see. He threw his phone aside, started the car and drove away from the police station.

As soon as he got home, the SMS tone beeped again. But this time, it wasn’t a text message, but a request from his social media plus a message from an online friend.

As a matter of fact, Ling Huaan received a call from Jiang Changping’s wife in the evening under the pretense of not being able to temporarily get in touch with Jiang Changping. She was hoping that Ling Huaan could give them one more day, but he firmly refused. After all he didn’t really want to hold an art exhibition.

The purpose of the trip was to determine the identity of the headless ghost. His wife’s phone call just confirmed Jiang Changping’s disappearance, which further increased the possibility that the headless ghost was Jiang Changping.

Ling Huaan saying that Jiang Changping owned him money was only an excuse to hint to Jiang Chengyan the identity of the headless ghost. Not only does this help Jiang Chengyan out of his predicament, it would also help him solve the case, killing two birds with one stone.

The author has something to say:
