October 27, 3020. After a steady sleep, Jiang Chengyan felt that the fatigue he accumulated from working an extra shift for nearly half a month had been swept away. He got up early in the morning and felt refreshed. After changing his clothes, he went out of the door.

He drove to the police station, bought some breakfast downstairs and glanced across the street. A young girl was wiping the windows and preparing for the day’s business.

She’s the day clerk of the grocery store. If she’s here, that means Ling Huaan must’ve left.

Jiang Chengyan hooked for his phone, hesitated for a moment, placed it back in his pocket, turned and walked into the police station.

Yao Min saw Jiang Chengyan enter the station and rushed over with the data. “Captain, here’s the result of the DNA comparison. It failed. No one matched with the victim’s DNA.”

Jiang Chengyan knitted his brows, set down his breakfast on the table and roughly scanned the document. “This is to be expected. After all, the duration of the death hasn’t been long so the families had yet to report to the police. Or maybe they’re living alone in Huacheng.”

“What should we do? We can’t find the head, the fingerprints are destroyed, and we can’t confirm the victim’s identity. We can’t investigate at all.” Yao Min couldn’t help complaining.

“If you keep an eye on the missing list, it’s impossible that there’s no contact. If you suddenly disappear, someone will surely notice.”

Jiang Chengyan flashed a smile. “There’s no use complaining. This isn’t the first time we encountered this kind of case. There will always be a way.”

“Well, that’s all. Captain, eat your breakfast. I’ll be busy out of the field.”

Jiang Chengyan nodded. “Tell Li Tong to visit the trace inspection department and inquire for any new clues from Qin Ke.”

Yao Min hummed in reply, pushed the door and went out.

Jiang Chengyan finished his breakfast and went straight to the Department of Forensic Medicine. When he walked into the chief’s office, he found Su Ke writing materials. Sensing his intrusion, he said without lifting his head: “Except for the discovery last night, there’s no new clue.”

Jiang Chengyan hesitated.  “Su Ke, are you knowledgeable about homosexuality?”

Su Ke looked up at Jiang Chengyan and blinked his eyes. “What? Jiang dui, are you interested in me?”

Jiang Chengyan couldn’t help rolling his eyes. “Give me a break. I’m not interested in you.”

Su Ke’s lips curled up and uttered half-truth: “I’m good-looking, have a nice body figure, not to mention I was young when I got the position of section chief. How could I not possibly attract Jiang dui?”

“Don’t interrupt. Tell me quickly, understand?”

“What do you want to know? Psychologically or physiologically speaking? I don’t know much about psychology, but I can talk physiology with you.”

“The DNA comparison for the missing person failed, the head is still missing, and the victim’s identity is still undetermined. The case has entered a dead end, and now it can only be regarded as a dead horse vet. But, homosexuality is a minority group and the social circle is very small so maybe we could find some clues.”

Su Ke nodded. “It is. But the bar isn’t open right now, It’ll be a waste of time if you go there. Come to me after you’re off work, I’ll go with you.”

“Ok, I’ll come over around six.”

“Jiang dui.” Su Ke stopped him just as he was about to leave. “Aren’t you gonna ask me some personal questions?”

Jiang Chengyan was surprised and glanced back at Su Ke. He said with a smile: “Since you insist, then I’ll ask as a friend. Su Ke, do you like men or women?”

Su Ke snickered knowingly when he heard his friend’s words. “I like both men and women. I’m bisexual.” He admitted quite frankly.

Jiang Chengyan was surprised. “I haven’t really guessed that. Are you going to look for a boyfriend or a girlfriend?”

“I’ll leave it up to fate. If your heart meets each other, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a man or woman.”

“You’re open-minded. But if you really take a boyfriend back, Uncle Su will surely break your leg.”

Su Ke forced a smile. “There’s no way. After all, it’s not them who will accompany me for the rest of my life. I can’t marry a woman I have no feelings with and have children in order to cater their wants. This is not only harmful to myself, but also to others.”

Jiang Chengyan pondered and agreed. “What you said is reasonable. Well, regardless what kind of partner you will find in the future, you have my blessing.”

Su Ke stared blankly at Jiang Chengyan. “What about you, Chengyan? Do you like men or women?”

Jiang Chengyan and Su Ke are alumni from the same school. Jiang Chengyan was two years older than Su Ke. He studied criminal investigation while Su Ke studied forensic medicine. They met in a school organized activity, and then worked in the Huacheng police station consecutively. Afterwards, they became good friends.

In the police force, Su Ke would address him Jiang dui just like the others. Only when the two were in private can Su Ke call him by his name. Today’s “Chengyan” seemed to be acting different, but he doesn’t care.

“I don’t know. As you said, it doesn’t matter whether it’s men or women, as long as we’re destined to be.”

Su Ke’s eyes flashed in mischief. “Well, don’t worry. We have a lifetime ahead of us. I’ll meet you in the end.”

“Stop saying that. I have something else to do so I’ll leave first. I’ll be back tonight.”

Su Ke’s mouth couldn’t stop from rising as he watched Jiang Chengyan leave. “‘Good start,” he whispered softly.

When Jiang Chengyan returned to his office, Li Tong followed him in. “Captain, Qin Ke found nothing there.”

“En, I see. Have you finished watching the surveillance video?”

“Yes. Since it’s we’ve been experiencing continuous downpour, disposing the corpse during daytime is already out of the question. After nine o’clock, the street was almost empty. Only a few people would walk by wearing umbrellas or raincoats; their appearances hidden. Both men and women couldn’t be accurately identified.”

“So the most important thing right now is to confirm the body’s identity, otherwise we won’t be able to proceed.”

Jiang Chengyan seemed to think of something, and said: “It’s such a big garbage bag and it’s raining. The murderer must’ve used some mode of transportation. You only looked at the pedestrians. Have you checked the vehicles?”

“Not yet. I’ll check it right away.”

“The time of death was from 10:00 to 11:00 pm on the 22nd. The body was discovered at 10 pm on the 24th. After killing, the body should be dealt with. If I were the killer, I would want to throw away the body before dawn. Because of the current weather and time, plus its remote location, few vehicles should only be passing by. You and Zhang Liang work hard to check all the vehicles that passed by where the corpse was dumped at nightfall.” They couldn’t identify the victim for the time being, so they could only look for clues this way.

“Roger, captain.”

Jiang Chengyan looked at the time. It was almost noon. He picked up his coat, walked out of his office and drove to Changping gallery. Might as well go and help Ling Huaan.

After observing the signboard hanging outside Changping Gallery, Jiang Chengyan pushed in the glass door. Seeing someone coming in, the shop assistant greeted him warmly, “Hello, sir. What can I do for you?”

Jiang Chengyan asked plainly. “Is your boss here? I need to see him. ”

The salesman frowned slightly, then quickly smiled. “Apologies, sir. Our boss isn’t currently here. Is there anything I can do for you?”

Jiang Chengyan took out his work id and said, “I’m a cop. There’s a case we’re investigating that needs your boss’s cooperation. Can you contact him?”

The shop assistant was surprised. He glanced in the office, his hesitation visibly shown. “Comrade police, our boss isn’t really here. He hasn’t visited the store for nearly a week.”

“A week?” Jiang Chengyan frowned and speculated on the possibility of Jiang Changping’s debt evasion. He said, “What about your boss’s wife?”

Before coming, Jiang Chengyan checked Jiang Changping’s personal information and was aware that he’s married and had a son.

The shop assistant glanced at the direction of the office again. Jiang Chengyan suddenly said, “Please ask her to come out, and that her cooperation is needed.”

The assistant contemplated then sighed. “Then sit down the rest area for a while. I’ll call you.”

Jiang Chengyan nodded, turned towards the rest area, and habitually inspected his surroundings. Not long after, the assistant came back, followed by a young woman. She was not older than 30 years old, and her dress gave her an aura of an intellectual. She was a beauty.

Jiang Chengyan stood up out of courtesy. The assistant introduced her. “Comrade police, this is our boss lady.”

The woman sported heavy dark circles, her face sallow and pallid. She smiled politely and addressed him anxiously. “Hello, comrade police. Are there any news about my husband?”

Jiang Chengyan stood still and hastily followed up. “You mean your husband is missing?”

The woman was dazed. “Comrade police, aren’t you here because of my husband’s disappearance?”

“No.” Jiang Chengyan shook his head, carefully examined at the woman’s expression, and said: “When did your husband disappear? And when did you report to the police?”

Disappointment flashed through the woman’s eyes. She held her silence for a while. “Actually, I hadn’t heard from my husband for a week. Just before he left, he told me that he’s going on a business trip and will be back in about three days, but there was no news from him as soon as he left. I also couldn’t get in touch with him. I was worried that he might’ve been in an accident, so I called the police earlier this morning. ”

Jiang Changping’s information flashed through his mind. He quickly took out his phone to check it.

Jiang Changping, 35, born on May 13, 2985. He is 178cm tall and weighs 73kg. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Huacheng University. He was a well-known painter in Huacheng. He’s married and had a son.

Jiang Chengyan pulled out the autopsy report he got from Su Ke. The victim was about 35 to 40 years old. He was between 175 and 180cm in height, weighing about 70 kg.

Jiang Chengyan compared the data of the two and found that the similarity between them was very high. In addition, Jiang Changping’s disappearance happened the same time as the crime, so he deduced that Jiang Changping might be the dead man.

“Does Jiang Changping have a birthmark in his body or easily recognizable characteristics?” he asked.

“Characteristics?” The woman frowned slightly and said, “He doesn’t have any notable features. If I have to say, then there is a very shallow scar in the center of his eyebrows. If you don’t look carefully, you won’t see it.”

“Madam, I need you to provide items that can be used to verify Jiang Changping’s DNA.”

The author has something to say:
