October 27, 3020. The victim was still unidentified, leaving the case in a deadlock. Delegated by Ling Huaan, Jiang Chengyan drove to Changping gallery and stumbled across Jiang Changping’s disappearance.

The woman gawked at him with ambiguity, asking anxiously. “Comrade police, why are you asking this? Did… did something happen with my husband?”

Jiang Chengyan haha-ed and pacified her. “We do this just in case. There’s no need to be nervous. Your husband might’ve been preoccupied with something and will be back soon, rest assured. Since you’ve reported the case, we will do our best to help you find him. ”

Her head bobbed, obviously a little distracted. “So… What am I supposed to do?”

“If it’s convenient, I would like to see your house.”

The woman eyed Jiang Chengyan, seemingly reluctant to agree. “Okay. I’m free today. ”

They went home together. He collected a handful of hair in the bathroom, squeezed in Jiang Changping’s toothbrush into the evidence bag, and soon returned to the police station.

Jiang Chengyan went directly to forensic medicine and found Su Ke eating. He handed him the materials he collected and said, “Su Ke, can you extract the DNA of these items and compare it to the victim’s?”

Su Ke scanned the so-called items in front of her and asked. “Where did this come from?”

“It’s a quite difficult to explain with just a few sentences. Eat fast and do the comparison post-haste.”

Su Ke covered his lunch box, picked up the items and walked to the lab. Before he reached the door, he paused and turned to look at Jiang Chengyan. “Did you have lunch?”

Jiang Chengyan, befuddled, subconsciously shook his head. “Not yet, why?”

“Leave this to me. I’ll inform you the results when I’m done. You go eat.”

“I’m not hungry.” He wasn’t currently in the mood to eat.

“Not hungry, ah? Well I’m still hungry, might as well eat again.” Su Ke walked back to his desk and sat down.

Jiang Chengyan: “Okay, fine, I’m going to eat. Anyway, it’s not that bad so you don’t have to worry. Take your time eating and then compare it once you’re done.”

Su Ke was satisfied. “That’s more like it! Let’s go, I’ll analyze this later.”

Jiang Chengyan slipped out of his office and checked the time. He took out his phone and scrolled through his contacts until it reached Ling Huaan’s number. His fingers hovered above in hesitation, but decided against it. His eyes shifted to Yao Min who came in holding a lunch box. “Yao Min, do you have more of those?”

Yao Min’s eyes widened and greeted him awkwardly: “Captain! Your office was empty so I thought you already ate outside when you went out. I didn’t buy one for you. I’ll call now and order another one for the captain.”

“Okay. I’ll send you a red envelope later.”

Jiang Chengyan turned back and examined the printed materials carefully.

If the dead body was indeed Jiang Changping, then whether Su Ke’s conjecture is true or not becomes the question.

He hesitated for a while, typed “enema” into the search engine and pressed enter. The information he found was:  basically the enema was a method provided by the hospital.

He scrolled down and found the information that he wanted at the bottom. He clicked it and read carefully.

Jiang Chengyan turned around. Seeing Yao Min’s baffled expression, his body subconsciously responded; he turned off the computer and explained, “No, it’s not what you think…”

Yao Min flushed red and blinked. She interrupted her captain’s words. “There’s no need to be so nervous, Captain. To tell you the truth, I’m a fujoshi. I know everything, I understand.”

“This isn’t… Ne, what are you thinking, you rotten girl?”

“Captain, you can rest assured! I won’t tell anyone. But I didn’t expect you to be the bottom, captain.”

Jiang Chengyan got angry, but Yao Min was agile. She opened the door and quickly fled.

Jiang Chengyan: “You come back here!”

The door was closed and opened again. Yao Min inserted her head in. “Captain, you can ask me if you don’t understand anything. There’s no need to search, I definitely know more than the internet!”

“Yao Min!”

Sensing Jiang Chengyan mortified with anger, Yao Min shrinked out in a hurry.

He was about to follow and cry out Yao Min’s name but was interrupted when the phone on his table suddenly vibrated. Jiang Chengyan picked up his phone and saw that it was a voice message from Ling Huaan. His finger reacted fast and clicked it without delay.

“Jiang dui, how’s my request going?”

“I went to the gallery this morning and met Jiang Changping’s wife. She said that Jiang Changping was indeed missing and had already reported the case.”

“Missing? Did something happen to him?”

Jiang Chengyan hesitated for a moment. “It’s hard to say, but you can rest assured that we would do our best to investigate.”

When his phone beeped, Ling Huaan opened the voice message and listened to it. “That’s going to be troublesome for your team,” he replied.

Placing the phone on the table, Ling Huaan glanced where Yan Yu was. “The reply was 30 seconds late. It seems that Jiang Chengyan has already guessed that the headless corpse is Jiang Changping.”

Without waiting for Yan Yu’s response, another beep came. “It’s not troublesome to serve the people.”

Yan Yu muttered, “Are we still involved in this case?”

“Now that the contract has been signed, of course we have to take care of it ’till the end. He would check his, and we would check ours, so there’s no problem. After all, we still want him to collect the net. ”

“Where should we start?”

Ling Huaan was silent for a moment. “His fingerprints were destroyed and his head was hidden. It’s obvious that the murderer wants to hide his identity, so they must be someone close to him. Let’s start with his personal connections.”

Yan Yu got up and said, “Okay, leave it to me.”

“No rush. Stay for a bit then leave after dinner.”

“Ok, I’ll eat whatever you’ll have.” Yan Yu’s cold eyes flashed.

“There are tomatoes and beef in the fridge. Just make two bowls of noodles.”

“Just a moment. I’ll do it now.” Yan Yu moved as if he was familiar with the kitchen.

After he thought of it, Ling Huaan followed to the kitchen and took out two eggs from the refrigerator.

“Huaan, I’ll help you.”

“I can do it.”

Hearing Ling Huaan persist, Yan Yu withdrew and focused on handling the ingredients. Ling Huaan took out the egg boiler. He felt around for some water then poured it in. After that, he placed the eggs, closed it and pressed the button.

While cooking the eggs, Ling Huaan skillfully peeled off few pieces of garlic.

When the beep from the egg boiler went off, Yan Yu came over and blocked Ling Huaan who was about to walk over. “I’ll get it.”

“You don’t have to, it’s not my first time. You have your own work to do.”

Yan Yu grew silent and instead took out the eggs one by one and dumped it into a bowl of cold water, then placed them into Ling Huaan’s hand. “All right.”

Ling Huaan bantered whimsically, “Yan Yu, you don’t always have to be so considerate. I can do a lot of things by myself.”

“En.” Yanyu answered, but as usual he still wouldn’t do it.

Ling Huaan helplessly shook his head and walked to the table with the bowl. He started peeling the eggs. After it was peeled, both the garlic and eggs were placed into the garlic masher. Then it was seasoned with a small amount of salt. After scooping and placing them in a plate, he poured some sesame oil for added flavor. The garlic eggs were finally done. It’s Yan Yu’s favorite dish.

Ling Huaan finished his work, while the noodles on Yan Yu’s side were almost finished.

Noodles with tomato and beef brisket, with hot sauce and pickles. Plus garlic and eggs. Lunch is ready.

“Yan Yu, eat less spicy food. It’s easy to catch fire in dry weather.”

“En. Just one scoop.” Yan Yu raised his mouth and showed a gentle smile.

“The sauce is spicier than usual. Just half a spoonful.”

“All right, I’ll listen to you.” Yan Yu poured back half a spoonful.

Ling Huaan nodded in satisfaction and quietly ate his noodles.

Aside from the sound of chopsticks and bowls clanging together, they were accompanied by silence. Yan Yu felt at ease.

After dinner, Yan Yu routinely tidied up the dishes, blocked Ling Huaan who wants to enter the kitchen out of habit, incessantly made good tea and delivered it to him, turned around and left.

“Yan Yu, remember to be careful and protect yourself.” Ling Huaan cajoled.

“Don’t worry, I’ll call you as soon as I have news.”

When the door closed, Ling Huaan picked up his cell phone. He put on his coat and frisked out the door. He took a taxi to Jiang Changping’s house.

“We’re here at Heping district.” The driver reminded Ling Huaan.

“How much is it?” Ling Huaan asked out loud.

The driver hesitated for a moment and answered, “25.”

“Boss, he’s not lying.” Wang Lei whispered in Ling Huaan’s ear.

Ling Huaan dug out 25 yuan from his pocket and passed it to the driver. After thanking him, he got out of the car.

Under Wang Lei’s guidance, he walked all the way downstairs of Building 5, took the elevator directly to the 20th floor, stopped in front of the 2001 door and whispered, “Does this place feel familiar?”

“I remember! This is my home.” The headless ghost in the bell exclaimed.

Ling Huaan nodded and glanced at Wang Lei. “Wang Lei, keep an eye on Li Qiuran for me. Follow her wherever she goes. If you notice anything unusual, report back to the store.”

“Great master, let me out. I want to see my wife and son.”

“No. You can’t go anywhere until this matter is clarified.”

“Master, I promise you won’t get into trouble. Let me see them. I beg you, master.”

“It seems I wasn’t clear enough?” Ling Huaan’s voice was mellow, tinted with venom.

The murderous aura surprised Jiang Changping. He became aware of the current situation, so he didn’t push it.

Wang Lei swallowed his saliva and cautiously said: “Boss, are you suspecting his wife to be the murderer?”

“It is a possibility.”

“No way! How is that possible?” Jiang Changping couldn’t help refute.

Ling Huaan grimaced and said, “I only said that it was possible, and deemed it necessary to investigate. Don’t worry, I promise to help you find out the truth. I’ll believe your words for now, but you have to be prepared.”

Jiang Changping clammed up.

The author has something to say:

This story has a plot, feelings, but it doesn’t only focus about love. Everyone’s existence has its meaning.

The line was terrifying, right.

I… They’re just friends, they’re just friends, they’re just friends.
