Chapter 76

The party system of D/Z SAGA.

Although it’s an RPG game, it features a heroine ending that depends on affection levels and route choices.

Magic Department, Knight Department.

Not only the main heroines of each department but also sub-heroines.

There are extra heroines, heroines unlocked after the second playthrough, and the final heroine route that opens after conquering all heroines.

There’s also a protagonist corruption route, which is subdivided, so there are multiple heroines in this corruption route.

According to the popularity poll, there were cases where a sub-heroine in the corruption route outshined the main route’s heroine.

And of course, if you fail in managing affection levels, you won’t even make it to Act 12.

If everything goes awry, no one sees Kelters after that. The same message appears, and they die.

If you neglect heroines or their affection level drops, Kelters might say, “Sorry, I’ve lost interest in you,” and break up.

If there’s a flag management mistake, a heroine may die saying, “…I wanted to laugh more, with Kelters…”

Just thinking about it brings tears to my eyes.

Anyway, moving on,

So, how do you manage heroine affection levels?

It’s simple. Include them in the party and go hunting often.

I’m not sure why going hunting and gaining experience is tied to increasing a heroine’s affection level.

Like seeing someone you like on the street and saying, “I like you, let’s go hunting right now.” Then, if it clicks, draw swords and spears, hunt monsters, share rewards in a bloody atmosphere, and then ask, “We seem to really click, can I ask you out for an after-party?” Is that the kind of world?

A world where I wouldn’t want to live.

Anyway, this party system is extremely important.

Why is it so important? Haha. I can explain it simply.

[There is a severe status disparity within the party.]

[You cannot receive status sharing!]

See? I told you.

It’s extremely important.

***

D/Z SAGA is not a god-tier game.

Honestly, it’s not a trash game, but it barely hangs in the realm between a good game and a masterpiece.

However, if it’s too much of a god-tier game, it’s not a game anymore. A game needs to have slightly stale, trash-like elements to be charming.

And if you look for the trash-like part of this game, it’s definitely in the party system.

For example, based on the original, let’s say I become Kelters and join the Magic Department and recruit party members.

Then Eve will be the basic addition, followed by Regina. And since Kelters has been trained as a magic user, his magic would have grown.

So, the party would be like this:

[Eve von Roengreen Magic 22]

[Regina Ciela Magic 21]

[Kelters Magic 19+1]

Here, Kelters gets an additional magic point, because there are two characters in the party with higher magic than Kelters, which results in an additional magic boost due to the magic synchronization system!

If you join the Knight Department, Nephti and Leon Weiss lead in stamina and strength.

In the game, because of this, a strength bonus party is referred to as a ‘strength party’ in short.

The rest are called ‘magic party’, ‘stamina party’, ‘agility party’, etc.

Yes.

Kelters receives guidance from the strong around him and gathers his heart as one to gain additional status. That’s the concept, and because of this, he eventually achieves a magic level comparable to Eve.

He’s really riding the bus hard.

However, there is a huge problem. If the status difference is too great, you can’t receive support.

For example, even if you put Eve with Magic 22 in the party, it doesn’t bless everyone with Magic +1, but only those with Magic 18 or higher. This seems to be a balance so that Kelters doesn’t ride the bus to Magic 22 right from the beginning. That makes sense, because a difference of 1 Magic is huge in the early game.

So, if I compare this concept to myself, Wolfram von Roengreen,

To receive additional status bonuses, it must be Stamina 6, Strength and Magic 7, Agility 12 or less.

Hmm. If it wasn’t Aila, but someone else… What would it have been like?

So, for example, someone else. I mean…

“None?”

Thinking about it, there’s no way someone like that is still enrolled in Jephryn.

You’d have to quit the academy if you’re only 4 points higher than Wolfram.

“Mille-feuille… won’t work either.”

Mille-feuille, who was expelled as an underachiever?

Mille-feuille’s Stamina, Strength, Magic, and Agility are 9, 8, 11, 6, respectively. If Mille-feuille had become the first party member for Wolfram, he would have received a Strength +1 correction.

…But it’s absurd to even suggest that.

Because an overwhelmingly strong character deserves to be in the party simply by their presence.

[The talent of the party member is truly excellent, so all magical actions receive an additional 5% correction!]

[The talent of the party member is truly excellent, so the probability of great success in all magical actions increases by 5%!]

If you put capable party members together, you get not just stat benefits but also unique bonuses of a magic party, like action bonuses or great success bonuses.

This 5% figure is determined by the party member’s trust and bond, and for heroines, by affection level. From what I remember, 8% is the maximum.

To achieve 8%, it means that Aila must have great trust in me.

“…Aila.”

“Yes?”

“You are a symbol of my trust. I hope for your continued support.”

“Yes! Leave it to me!”

***

Strictly speaking, I never even dreamed of leveraging status for gain from the start.

Initially, I didn’t even know the party system existed, and there weren’t any characters weak enough around me to provide me with support.

I could perhaps recruit some tier-4 trash from the labor market and live while incrementing their stats by +1, but that would mess up the party balance.

It’s because of Aila’s overwhelming status that we benefit in magical actions. If I add such trash to the party, we might get the stat bonus but the judgment bonus would be in the dumpster.

So, during production, I roll with an agility party, a tank party if needed, and a strength party for physical damage. It’s a difficult and complex game.

But most of that is useless.

However, separate from that, there’s something I definitely want to obtain early on after forming a party.

“Aila.”

“Yes, Wolfram, did you call?”

“Do you have free time this weekend?”

“Yes. I do. The exams are over and there’s no social gathering.”

I see.

Then, this is a perfect opportunity.

“Would you come on an expedition with me?”

“…An expedition?”

“Yes. It might take some time, but how about it? Can you do it?”

There’s a mini-quest that must be done as soon as the first party is formed.

However, the problem is that it takes a bit of time.

Aila pondered for a moment, touching her chin with her index finger, then soon smiled brightly.

“Wolfram, you got the request wrong.”

“…Hm?”

“You should say, ‘Let’s do this together. I trust you.’ That would make me much happier, you know?”

“……Hmm. Let’s do this together. I would like to ask you because I trust you.”

“Of course, I’ll gladly accept. So, who else is going, and what time are we leaving? Should I come out early in the morning?”

I think about the quest trigger and shake my head.

“No. It’s just you accompanying me. And there’s no need to come out early in the morning.”

“Ah, ahaha… That, that means it’s just the two of us. Yes. I understand. It must be a short trip?”

“No. We have to spend until midnight in the field. We might stay overnight.”

“Ah, I see. So, it’s an overnight trip. Return the next day. Got it. Then we can leave at leisure.”

After Aila acknowledged this and seemed convinced,

She widened her eyes in surprise like a startled cat and asked again.

“…Nee? An, overnight…?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

***

Act 2, as I mentioned earlier, progresses with episodes of meeting the heroines of each route and increasing affection with them.

A notable example is the 2-1 episode of Eve’s invasion of the Black Flag hideout.

I ended up accompanying them, but originally, Kelters would have added Eve to his first party, and then encountered the Black Flag executives for the first time with the student council officers.

After going through this episode, a quite handy system develops between Eve and Kelters, who were in the same party.

It’s a skill that can only be designated to one person in a party, and if you’re building a party system, it’s a must-have skill.

I’m really lucky I didn’t get the party system with Eve when I went to the field with her.

Otherwise, I might have first gotten this feature with Eve. Thinking about it, it’s truly repulsive.

Anyway. Right now, we’re here in the Sleeping Mountains to get this skill.

I really come here often. Really.

“Uh, um. How far are we going? Ah, [Black Obsidian] [Area Control].”

“It won’t take too long. Hm. Patrasch. This is about right.”

Riding amiably on Patrasch’s cart, we roughly set up a spot on the middle slopes of the deep mountains.

The campsite where I had been with Eve before still had its traces.

On our way, Aila easily defeated the monsters we encountered with her Black Obsidian.

Then, a melancholic status window popped up in front of my eyes.

[You did not contribute to the battle. You do not receive any status increase effects.]

[You did not contribute to the battle. You do not receive any status increase effects.]

…It’s kind of sad, really.

Anyway.

After defeating the monsters, we set up herbs and barrier stones, relied on Patrasch’s psychokinesis to pitch a tent, and lit a campfire.

Then I prepared a simple meal. Aila asked if she could help, but I shook my head. I called her here for my convenience; the least I could do was this much.

Using Mayo Beans for the dressing in a salad, Cream Beans for cream pasta, and Mix Beans for two smoothies, I finished setting up everything and sat down.

“Wow…”

“Why that reaction? Eat before it gets cold.”

“Yes, yes. But… you seem more accustomed to camping than I thought, Wolfram?”

“What of it? Considering my goal, it’s only natural.”

To become the world’s best convenience store owner, one must be good at cooking.

This isn’t a place where meal kits are mass-produced in a factory.

“…You’re right. If you want to go out into the world, you need to be skilled in cooking and camping… Are you going to pursue your dream someday, Wolfram?”

“…?”

“That’s nice. I think it’s a good dream. Well then, I’ll eat up. Wolfram!”

“Hmm.”

After we finished eating and I cleaned up, Aila created a chair out of Black Obsidian in front of the campfire and took a seat.

So far, our actions were twofold:

‘We went to the field with a party member and fought.’

‘We had a meal together.’

And for the final trigger, I found a spot and initiated a conversation with Aila.

“It’s okay. Aila Tristar. It’ll be okay. Wolfram said he’d wait.”

While Aila was muttering something, I finished cleaning up and sat on the chair she made.

“Huh?!”

“Why are you so surprised?”

“No, no, it’s just… You suddenly… came so close, it startled me.”

“If that’s the case, I apologize.”

“……Wolfram. Why did you want to come on this expedition today?”

“…Hmm.”

What should I say?

If I tell her I came to get a skill because she’s a party member, I might as well be asking for a spear in my gut, right?

In situations like this, maybe just…

“I wanted to have a conversation.”

“…A conversation?”

“Yes. Recently, there have been too many busy things happening, and I haven’t had the chance to calmly talk. I hope you see this as an opportunity to deepen our bond as the best comrades in rebellion.”

“Ah… Yes, yes!”

Finally, Aila shed the awkwardness she had shown all day and looked at me with a bright smile.

“So Aila, ‘let’s have a conversation.'”

“Yes, I agree! Wolfram! Let’s talk a lot!”

With that, all the triggers were set, and a hologram panel appeared and then disappeared in front of my eyes.

[The party member agreed to converse during rest time!]

[Your intimacy with the party member deepens!]

[You have completed camping after the first expedition with a party member!]

[You have achieved an achievement.]

[You have obtained the title ‘Dead Socialite’!]

“What shall we talk about?”

“How about some old stories?”

“Old stories? Hmm. What kind of stories?”

“Our childhood stories!”

“……”

That’s the memory of Wolfram von Roengreen.

It’s a story unknown to Lee Young-jin, and not mentioned in the setting books.

“There were so many things, I can’t remember them all. Actually, my childhood memories are quite vague.

“…Ah. I see. Wolfram’s childhood was…… because you were tormented for having low abilities.”

“Hmm. Sorry about that.”

“No, no, I’m the one who should be sorry.”

“So, won’t you tell me? What happened in my childhood?”

“……Yes, yes! So, you see.”

Aila began to enthusiastically tell the story.

There were some parts she deliberately avoided, but I was able to insert new information about the relationship between Aila and Wolfram into my mind.

And then,

“So, you see, Wolfram… …That’s…”

“If you’re sleepy, go ahead and sleep.”

“Yes, yes…”

It was half-past ten according to the clock.

It seems Aila really does fall asleep around this time as she said.

While Aila went inside the tent to sleep, I looked at the system window in front of me.

[You have acquired a skill!]

[Heart Link]

[8T]

[Party-exclusive skill]

[A skill that creates a different kind of bond, distinct from magic, based on mutual trust. When a party member’s health falls below a certain level, it gets shared with the party leader! The party member’s status abnormalities are shared with the party leader!]

I nodded my head as I read the skill.

“Indeed, I’ve acquired it.”

A kind of add-on skill that allows immediate display of a party member’s status abnormalities, health decrease, etc. Having this skill makes a big difference in party management.

When I activated the skill, a small icon of Aila’s face appeared in front of my eyes, next to it her health glowing green, her magic power glowing blue, and a status abnormality indicator showing no disturbances.

“When Act 2 ends, Act 3 begins. And the final boss of Act 3 is Aila Trista.”

I hope for no incidents, but one never knows how fate will turn.

So, I must prepare.

Having Aila as a party member means that as the party leader, I must protect her from danger at all costs.

That is the play style of Lee Young-jin, a convenience store manager with 20,000 hours of total playtime in D/Z SAGA, who has never let a party member die.
