Chapter 218: New Day

Li Xiqing took one box out from the paper bag, and started to unwrap the plastic wrapper around it.
"Let's go over that side, it is less crowded there."
Shao Yan nodded and walked with him to a corner. She watched carefully as he lit the sparkles and then gradually she heard a hiss of sound when it was lit up. He handed one to Shao Yan who took it with both of her hands and then said excitedly, "I can't remember when the last time I played with this thing was!" She exclaimed, "This surely brings back childhood memories," and then she grinned cheekily at Li Xiqing.
He raised his index finger and tapped on the tips of her nose, causing her to giggle louder.
When some other people also saw them playing around happily, they went back inside the hall to grab their own sparkles from their souvenir bags. Soon, almost everyone who were standing outside were waving the brightly lit up sticks happily.
The crowd was soon distracted with the different kinds of sparklers. They were having too much fun outside that everyone lost the track of time.
Just when they thought they had more time to burn, a huge, bright fireworks bloomed above everyone's head.
!! BOOM !! BOOM !! BOOM !!

More and more fireworks were shot up to the sky; surprising everyone who was standing around in the balcony. Rainbows of colors bloomed in the dark grey sky.
Shao Yan jolted when the first fireworks exploded above her head. Surprised by the loud explosion, she staggered to the back, and bumped into Li Xiqing. His firm stance absorbed her impact; he gently wrapped both arms around her as the two of them stood by the railings to watch the fireworks show.
Li Xiqing leaned his cheek onto hers. As his skin touched her skin, Li Xiqing was surprised at the coolness from the supple cheek. Reflexively, he tightened his hold around her, "Happy New Year!" He said into her ears.
A mix of many different noises went around her. The hiss and crackle from the fireworks, the "Auld Lang Syne" song that was playing inside the hall behind her, the chatter from the people around her. But Shao Yan was not able to hear them; all of her senses were focused solely on this man who was hugging her from behind.
She raised both of her hands, and placed them over his hands, "Happy New Year!"
His lips slowly touched her skin as Li Xiqing planted a soft kiss on her cheek, "May this new year bring us another round of happiness."
Shao Yan slowly closed her eyes as she received his kiss. "En," while mumbling her response, she leaned her head closer to him, "may this new year be a much better year for both of us."
He planted another kiss on her forehead, "En, I promise it will be a whole new level," he mumbled under his breath.
The two of them kept their warmth against each other as they watched the fireworks show from afar. Each heart was chanting good wishes for each other, and each heartbeat slowly beat for one another as they entered the New Year together.

Slightly after two in the morning, everyone gradually dispersed and left the museum.
Shao Yan had been walking around for a while; she was trying to locate Risa the whole night, but she did not see her around.
Shao Yan was worried and wanted to check on her and also to bid her goodbye. She stopped some people that she met along the way, but none of them knew where she was.
Just when she stepped out of the lobby entrance, Shao Yan finally heard something.
"Oh! Miss Yamaguchi left slightly before midnight."
Shao Yan had met Eugene, one of Risa's team members, who was standing by the lobby entrance. He was bidding everyone goodbye when Shao Yan stopped him on his track to enquire about his manager.
He continued, "Miss Yamaguchi had been having a terrible headache for a while and she looked really pale, so she told us to continue the event in her stead, while she decided to go home to rest."
Shao Yan felt a slight panic in her heart. During dinner, she failed to notice this, and Shao Yan felt even more guilty. She had been trying to call Risa on her mobile phone but she did not pick up. Now that she knew that Risa was sick, Shao Yan assumed she must have turned her mobile phone off.
"En, I know, I'll check on her tomorrow," Shao Yan patted him on his shoulder, "thank you for your hard work tonight. Happy New Year!"
"En, Happy New Year to you too, Project Manager Shao! Have a good night!" He answered before he waved enthusiastically at her.

Li Xiqing slowly released the brake as he started to drive forward. He went to get the car when Shao Yan stopped to talk to Eugene earlier. When she had finished her conversation with Eugene, Li Xiqing had also just arrived to fetch her.
"No," she shook her head weakly as she adjusted her seat.
"Eugene said she had left before midnight. He said she had a headache and was pale, I think she may have caught a flu," Shao Yan continued as she stretched a little to relieve her muscles that were aching.
It had been a long night for all of them. Particularly for her, since she had spent weeks to plan for this event.
"So, I was thinking that I will go to her place tomorrow to check on her. I will also bring her some warm food. She may need to eat it before taking a flu medicine."
"En," Li Xiqing hummed his reply, "do what you have to do. Don't forget, I am going with Karl and Martin to play some golf tomorrow."
"En," Shao Yan replied before she leaned back to her seat and gradually, her eyelids felt heavier and she closed them to rest for a while.
Li Xiqing glanced at the sleepy Shao Yan who was sitting next to him.
When the traffic light turned to red, he slowed down the car to a full stop before he reached out one hand to her side. His broad palm gently caressed her head and his thumb absentmindedly brushed her forehead.
A silly smile appeared on his face as he watched his beloved's sleeping face for a moment.
'Happy New Year, Yan Yan. This will be a new chapter for both of us.'
