“Beginning of War”

“So, how was it?”

“It was as expected.”

“I see.”

With a serious expression on my face, I responded to Mocha’s report. The incident began with a light blue paper that was delivered to me.

This light blue paper was a special communication letter for emergency use, which I handed to my younger brother, Mark, who was the heir of the Marbert Baron family when I left.

It functioned like a telegram in my previous life and was only permitted to be used in case of an unavoidable problem. The previous letter was about my father, Randall, the current head of the family, being afflicted by an epidemic and being on the verge of death, asking for help.

And this time, the content of the letter was even more serious than before. It mentioned that the neighboring Seconds Kingdom was making moves to invade the Schells Kingdom, and there might be a war soon. It was something that was hard to believe.

Although I knew from history books that the Seconds Kingdom and the Schells Kingdom had a long history of discord and frequent wars, I never imagined that they would launch an invasion again less than ten years after the ceasefire agreement.

The period from the end of a war to recovery involved various factors, such as the time required to replenish lost labor and resources and the budget used for procurement. It usually took much longer than ten years. Unless they were preparing for the next war immediately after the previous one ended, it would be difficult to be ready in ten years. It was hard to believe that the ruler of a country, someone who knew they would lose to an opponent they had been defeated by before, would initiate a war.

Anyway, even though it was a letter from my younger brother, it would be reckless to take action without confirming the facts. So, I let Mocha gather information as a scout.

It took quite some time from the capital to the border with the Seconds Kingdom. However, I had the ability to teleport, so I sent Mocha to the Marbert territory once, let her gather information, and then went to the Marbert territory again a few days later to pick her up.

AD

According to Mocha’s information, there was a flurry of activity and armed soldiers preparing for battle in the Byreus territory ruled by Margrave Byreus, located at the border with the Seconds Kingdom.

That alone was not definite information, so I had her investigate further. It was revealed that a force that seemed to be the Seconds Kingdom’s army had gathered on the plain across the border between the Schells Kingdom and the Seconds Kingdom, and the approximate number was at least thirty thousand.

There was no reason for such a large number of people to gather on an empty plain other than for war. With that information, I confirmed that the Seconds Kingdom had invaded the Schells Kingdom and initiated a war.

“I understand that the war is about to begin, but it’s strange that there hasn’t been a summons from the king.”

Despite being a major event for the country, it felt strange that I, who possessed the Schells Kingdom’s Mithril First Class Medal, was not being called upon.

There was no way they have been neglecting the vigilance toward the neighboring country that had been in a state of war and ceasefire for a long time, so it was likely that the news of the war had already reached the king’s ears.

In that case, either they judged that there was no need to inform me since I already had the information beforehand, or they were anticipating my actions with the assumption that I had obtained prior information.

If it was the former, there could be several reasons for their speculation, but if it was the latter, there was a possibility of falling behind if I didn’t show any movement. Although I didn’t think they would choose such an uncertain option, I instructed Mocha to explain the details to Sobas and then teleported to the king’s office to grasp the situation for now.

By the way, as a side note, before going to the king, I handed Mocha a sweet potato as a reward. I should mention that she ate it with her usual animal-like expression.

“Ah, you suddenly appeared again. I wish you would come in a normal way instead of surprising me…”

As I arrived at the office, I could hear the king’s carefree voice, but considering the situation, I quickly stated my purpose.

“Never mind that, what is the current situation?”

“What are you talking about? I can’t see what you’re getting at.”

“Don’t tell me you still don’t know?”

“What do you mean…”

As the king looked puzzled by the meaning of my words, there was a sudden knock on the door. When the king gave permission to enter, a soldier entered in a flustered manner.

AD

“I… I have an urgent message from Margrave Byreus! I was entrusted with it by a fast horse from Byreus Margrave for Your Majesty!”

“Hmm, I appreciate your efforts. You may leave.”

The soldier handed over the parchment and, after expressing his gratitude, was dismissed from the office. The king began reading the parchment slowly, and as he progressed, his expression gradually turned grim.

“It seems as you said, the neighboring Seconds Kingdom has launched an attack.”

“That’s what I’ve been saying. So, what’s our plan now?”

“Of course, if they attack, we will defend against it.”

“I understand that. What I’m asking is how I will participate in this battle.”

To say it myself, my power was capable of taking on even an entire country. Frankly speaking, it was monstrous. It was obvious what would happen if someone like me were to side with one of the warring nations in a war between countries—it would end in overwhelming devastation.

That was why I need to ask the king, as the person in charge of the country, in advance about the way I should participate in this war. If I were to intervene too much and completely annihilate the enemy’s army, it could lead to various problems. It was necessary to act cautiously in this situation.

“Will you do it?”

“Of course. However, if I go overboard, it could be problematic. I would like to know how much intervention is acceptable.”

“Though it has become a regular occurrence, I want to put an end to this war. Don’t hesitate and let loose.”

“Are you sure? It might turn into complete chaos.”

“We have fought the Seconds Kingdom for far too long. It’s safe to say that repairing our relationship is impossible at this point. If we let the Seconds Kingdom do as they please, much unnecessary blood will be shed. That’s why I want you to go all out without reservation.”

Having obtained the conditions for my participation in the war from the king, I informed him that I would visit again and then teleported back to my mansion.
