Chapter 228 - "The Tea Party Where Motives Intersect"

~ Clarice’s Side ~

Right now I’m at Roland-chan’s Manor. I had heard it was a tea party with the royal family, but to think it would turn out like this…

The participants aren’t just the royal family – my Malbert family is close with the Byreus family who is also participating, and for some reason, the prestigious upper noble Rosenberg family is taking part as well.

As his mother, I can’t help but wonder, just what did he do to get to know such people?

As I was thinking about that, it seems the Byreus family has arrived, as they are shown into the tea party venue by Roland-chan’s servants.

I do have a good relationship with Charlene-sama since our husbands are close, but no matter how good relations between nobles are, when it comes to prioritizing profit, it’s commonplace to readily betray even close partners.

No matter how close we seem on the surface, I don’t know what she’s thinking beneath it all. I do understand that’s how nobles are, but as humans, there are parts we just can’t sever ourselves from.

“Good day, Lady Malbert. You were the first to arrive.”

“Yes, among the noble families participating today, we have the lowest peerage.”

Usually at gatherings like these, the lower the peerage, the earlier you enter the venue, and the higher it is, the later you arrive – that’s the norm.

It seems Roland-chan understands this as he guides the baron Malbert family at first. There’s nothing incorrect about that.

After chatting for a while with Lady Byreus and her daughters, the Rosenberg family arrives as well.

“Good day everyone. Sorry for being late.”

“Not at all.”

“No problem.”

With that, all the tea party attendees besides the royal family gathered, but the topic of conversation was thoroughly focused on my son. Especially when questions were flying about what kind of woman he likes, the atmosphere in the room instantly became like a battlefield…

“I haven’t been able to speak with my son recently, so I don’t know what kind of woman he prefers.”

“Come to think of it, why did the Malbert family banish him?”

“Th-that is…”

I had only learned about that recently. Since I just couldn’t comprehend why Roland-chan, who had been banished, was completely changed, I pressed Mark for answers and was told it was all Roland-chan’s scheme.

Moreover, shockingly, that scheme had apparently begun when Mark was four years old, and continued for a whole six years until Roland-chan was banished from the Malbert family.

Now that I think back on it, Roland-chan’s behavior did seem to change around when he was six. To think he had been trying to leave the Malbert house since then…

“Please stop, Maraliefa. It’s improper to pry so bluntly into another family’s affairs.”

“Y-yes. My apologies, Lady Malbert.”

“It’s fine.”

While Miralene-sama chides Maraliefa-sama’s words, I mustn’t be deceived. Maraliefa-sama was likely just asking what Miralene-sama herself wanted to know. Obtaining necessary information without dirtying her own hands, how very like an upper-class noble wife.

But unfortunately, the information I have about Roland-chan is all from before he was banished from the family. I barely have any information after he was exiled… As a mother, I wonder if that’s alright, but that child hardly tells me anything about himself anymore…sniffle…

After that exchange, as we continued harmless small talk, it seemed the queen and princess had finally arrived, as I sensed the tension spreading among the servants.

“Good day everyone. Were we a bit late?”

It goes exactly the same as with the Rosenberg family earlier. Until the tea preparations were ready, we would converse and enjoy ourselves again. The children were whispering together in a corner of the venue but didn’t seem to be causing any trouble. Amidst all this, the queen suddenly asked me,

“Lady Malbert, may I ask something?”

“What is it?”

“Your son Roland, though he now goes by Rolando – what will become of him from here on?”

As his mother, it’s only natural for me to consider Roland-chan’s future. Especially regarding marriage and the Malbert family – whether he truly has no intention of inheriting it.

From how he is now, it’s clear Roland-chan has absolutely no will to inherit the Malbert house, and regarding marriage or feelings for women…

I think it’ll be another two or three years before such thoughts sprout, so I don’t know what will happen when the time comes.

“It’s difficult to concretely state what will happen going forward. However, if the time comes when he is truly struggling, I want to support him to the extent I am able.”

“I see (Even as his mother, she is exasperated with him. He really won’t be swayed easily, it seems).”

And so, until the tea party preparations were ready, we continued conversing while keeping each other in check.
